Friendly staff, traditional atmosphere, family feel. If this is what a British Pub is like, it's my jam! I have visited many times and I'm finally writing a review. It is my go-to spot for dinner. There are a few TVs, a spot where a live band plays, and booths, tables, and a bar (where I usually sit). The fish and chips are my favorite! The fries are great and the fish is big, crispy, and tasty! I'm not a big bee drinker but they have mostly imported beers. Yeungling is is the only domestic draft. The food portions are adequate; i.e. you'll be satisfied but not full. There lies the invitation for their desserts! Trust me, GET THE STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING! I recommend this place. (I am going to preface this review by saying that I was devastated to find that this restaurant is closing in August. I thought I finally found a place that really served authentic British food that tasted amazing. I was going to stop by again at some point in the next month or so, but I'm not sure I can bring myself to do it now. I'll just be too sad knowing I won't be able to come back ever again. That being said:) My fiancé and I saw this place on a rerun of Triple D. I take several trips a year to the Christiana area of Delaware. I looked it up and it was only 20 minutes from where I go and it was on my way home. I have to say, this place deserved to be on Triple D and more. It's definitely a small local place, but the food is nothing but glorious. I haven't had too many fish and chips in my life, but this by far the best fish and chips I've ever had. The fish was super fresh, flakey, and delicious. The batter was perfect. The chips were crispy and well seasoned. I had the potato leak for an appetizer which was very unique and good. For desert, my fiancé and I shared the Sticky Toffee Pudding. I'm not an expert on British cuisine but it was a dang fine desert and seemed super authentic. Super authentic and great food. It's hard to find a good British Pub but Stoney's is one of the few I enjoyed. The service was really good and the place has a fun vibe to it. I got the roast beef and Yorkshire dinner. Stopped in early on a Friday night for dinner. Parked in the lot, and we were seated immediately. Within a half hour, though, there was a wait. Plenty of UK memorabilia hung around the restaurant, and bar area was busy, with seeming regulars. Plenty of beers to choose from, many British. Waitresses were great-everyone there seems to pitch in to make sure everything is good for the customers. Was in the area while my older daughter went to see a movie at the theater at Brandywine and was looking for something super unique. As soon as we saw that there was authentic British pub food nearby, I was sold; and it is very much indeed AUTHENTIC. In fact, this is easily the most authentic place you will likely find within a hundred miles around, if not more. With recipes pulled from the owners' mother's cookbook and emulated perfectly, there are many brilliant dishes that those not familiar with classic British fare may find confusing, even impossible to discern by names alone, such as Toad In a Hole. The menu is loaded with classics as well as some basic bar fare and yet still some other choices to ensure anyone visiting can find something they may enjoy, but it is the pub traditional that really allow Stoney's to shine. They also have an outstanding bar with a great UK beer selection and actual drinks poured the way they should be, by hand. This is disappearing as more chain restaurants and multi-spot places open up shop, and to find a REAL pub that just feels authentic where everything tastes crafted properly and with effort is very exciting. Remember that this is indeed a classic British pub and does have that feel. Don't expect some frilly, super decked out joint that is going to be the most comfortable place you've ever been. Expect authentic. A pub. Bar seating and some tables; utilitarian but with cozy vibes oozing from the corners and a soccer (ahem....football, premier league especially) theme throughout. Service is friendly and quick, and the drinks are kept pouring as long as you're ready for them to come, complementing the hearty food coming from the kitchen. Everything is homemade and delicious, and really gives you the feel that you're at home, enjoying the kind of food the owner grew up eating from his mum. If you are nearby, or live in the lower end of Delaware county, bottom end of Chester county, or in DE near the Brandywine Hundred this is a must-go. It's worth a trip if you are elsewhere. The parking can get a little rough on weekend evenings, and when there lid live music, the small setting can get violently loud. But that should be expected. Go on, enjoy some pints, have some food that will sit in your belly and soak up that beautiful beer and listen or tell some tales to some people you never met, and you may find you have a bunch of new friends by the end of your meal. Dear lord. Help me. Wheel me out to my car. I've gorged beyond gorging. My grandfather was born and raised in London. My grandmother: Cardiff. They moved to Seattle in the 1920s and bore my mother. Who was taught all their recipes her entire childhood. My mother's Yorkshire Pudding is what they serve here. I'd swear to it. Also Stoney has STOLEN my grandparents Scotch Egg recipe. A very cozy place for a Saturday night date. Surprised on how busy it was as it seems pretty quiet during the day so we did not know what to expect. Live music was great and added to the atmosphere. We tried the potato and leek soup which was nicely balanced with tidbits of potato to give it texture rather than a pureed approach. The scotch egg was nicely hot and nice that it allowed the protein to speak for itself without overpowering it with salt or grease. I enjoyed my toad in the hole and the Yorkshire pudding was nicely baked. The gravy with the mashed potatoes was absolutely brilliant. Came here while driving through Delaware a few weeks ago. We have tried to come here before but they are only opened after 4pm. This has been on our list to try after seeing Diners, drive ins and dives. It is definitely more of a dive and could really use some new carpet, chairs and tables. It is a little dirty inside for sure. There was only one waitress for Sunday night service. She was also the hostess and bartender. She was absolutely amazing holding it all down by herself and I really hope she is paid well! She was so knowledgeable about the menu and gave great recommendations. We had the stoneys sampler, bridie, and roast beef and Yorkshire pudding. Everything was so good and it was worth the hype and the drive. The kids menu needs some help, but that is my sons fault for ordering a pizza at a British pub. I would encourage my kid to try something not on the kids menu in the future. read more

It's always fun for me to check out a place that's been spotlighted on a TV show. A couple months ago Guy Fieri featured Stoney's on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. The authentic British Pub vibe here is really appealing. It feels cozy and low-key. There's booth and high top seating, an exposed brick interior wall, and lots of wood trim. The deep blue walls are decorated with photos of icons of British Music like the Beatles and David Bowie. The pub has two steel tip dart boards but I think they were more for decor than for actual playing, since a table and chairs were in front of them and there was no marked throw line that I could see. That is my only complaint as I would have liked to play darts. I loved my fish & chips ($15.95). The fish was moist and flaky and the batter was light and tasty. It was fried perfectly, not overdone and not underdone. My husband ate the pie of the day ($13.95), which was chicken pot pie today (see photo). He said that it was flavorful and cooked very nicely. He was happy with his sides of peas and mashed potatoes with gravy too. We enjoyed chatting with our friendly server, Rasheda. The owner, Mr. Stone, greeted every customer with a smile and checked in at each table. He seems very good natured and is a natural host. Though I'm pretty much always happy with my food from Stoney's, after I've been quite a few times now, my overall rating has dropped off a bit. The most recent dinner, they weren't open on time. Additionally, I've had a bit of a tummy ache after I've eaten here, every single time, which has me reluctant to return. I want to love this place, but it's losing its luster for me. Such a great English pub. This was my 2nd visit and it was just as good as the first. The owner is so friendly and our server was amazing. The inside is cozy and quaint with the feel of being in a pub in England. They have authentic food and you must try the fish and chips. The best I've ever had. I stopped by after not coming for probably over 20 years and they still have the best fish and chips in Delaware!! I remember the owner telling me over 20 years ago that their fish is delivered fresh every day never frozen never sitting overnight and you can tell the difference! Popped in for a beer on the way out of the nearby (dry) burger joint and was pleased to find what seems to be quite the inspired British pub. Whether it's tellies tuned to the football channels (that's not *American* football) or a sign in the lobby proclaiming their pride at serving "Imperial pints" and the St. George's Cross flags throughout, it shouts "UK!". On tap, a selection of "proper" English beers including Old Speckled Hen, Magner's Cider, Boddington Cream Ale, London Pride and of course, Guinness (which is technically Irish, but what's a hundred miles or so). Mike poured me a perfect Guinness pint, right down to me having to wait five minutes for it to "settle" and turn completely black before drinking. Impressive. While waiting, I got to enjoy a very odd smell wafting in from the kitchen area. The fish & chips looked really excellent. I love this place. Years ago on our way to DE and our sailboat (long gone now) my husband and I and our 2 young daughters stumbled upon Stoneys! What a great accident! I spotted the Welsh and Scottish flag awnings and my curiosity went mad! We met the owner, a very tall Yorkshire man with a fascinating history in "the record biz" who made us feel right at home. Many years and plowman's lunches later...and bangers, meat pies and all those other unique and yummy foods from the British Isles...our daughters and I still occasionally get to Stoney's to remember wonderful visits their with my late husband. First time here (Thursday night, 7pm) great bar, great atmosphere, acoustic performer about to get on stage. Small, quaint, lovely place (maybe seats about 16 at the U shaped bar (bonus) and a couple giant high top tables that seat a ton. A few smaller tables and booths as well. Stoney's in an earnest and mostly successful attempt to offer a British Pub in small wonder of Delaware. It's namesake hails from Leeds and claims he started it after despairing of ever finding real English fare in the US. I know this because on most visits he meets each guest with a hearty greeting and a ready willingness to share his life story and anything else you may want to know. But there's more to Stoney's than its amiable host. It has a great selection of beers, ales, and ciders as befits any British Pub worthy of its name, as well as wines and harder stuff. And depending if you appreciate or disdain English cuisine will determine whether you hail or revile the food, but no one will deny its authenticity. After sampling traditional fare like Beef & Kidney Pie and Bangers & Mash on prior visits, this time I opted for the more straightforward Fish & Chips. I got a flakey moist fish fillet lightly coated in a crispy coating of batter. My wife complained that her King George (roast beef bits wrapped in a Yorkshire Pudding) was a bit dry, but I noticed she cleared her plate nonetheless. For dessert I went for the traditional treacle cake served in a warm pool of custard while wifey choose the Yorkshire Delight --- yet another Yorkshire Pudding, this time wrapped around ice cream. Neither of us were disappointed. About the time we were finishing up, a folk dou set up and began serenading us with a round of Celtic melodies, completing a memorable dining experience. Full disclosure: I didn't try the food here. I love a good British Pub and pub grub. As soon as I walked in,I was hit by what I can only describe as a strong old urine smell. Like a porta-potty on a hot day. I did sit down hoping it would get better, but after less than 5 min and not yet ordering, I couldn't take the smell anymore and left. It's a very lazy joke to say that British food isn't good. Anybody who says so has clearly never been to Stoney's. My personal favorite is the roast beef sandwich with stilton cheese. Went on Sunday evening around 9pm. Pleasantly surprised. Nice atmosphere and good selection of beer and whiskey. Had a Bodington's and a plate of chips. The chips were hand cut (not the frozen variety) but I felt they were a little burned on the outside. Texture and size was good though. We also ordered a cod pie and peas which were really good. I don't understand any of the negative reviews I've read here about Stoney's, especially the ones that question it's pub-like authenticity?? As far as I know, "Pub"is just another name for a tavern or bar and last time I checked, this place was one. Wondering where that traditional British ambiance is?? - well my friend, the owner is a very welcoming host whose British, the menu is inspired by traditional British fare, and much of the beer and spirit offerings appear to be imported from the UK, so I'm not really sure what the issue is?! For my part, I've been many times over the years being a local boy and it's always great! Delicious simple food. I usually get the Toad in the Hole or Shepherds Pie and am always pleased. The Scotch Eggs and Fish & Chips are good too. Additionally I discovered "Old Speckled Hen" on tap here which is now one of my favourite imported ales. Depending on when you go the atmosphere can either be quiet and relaxing or lively and festive. Best part is how unique Stoney's is to North Wilmington. We need more places like this! read more

Perfectly decent little place. There's not much parking, so if you've got a large party, see if you can carpool. I've been to the UK, spent a lot of time there, actually, so my standards for pub grub are probably a bit higher than most area residents. The atmosphere is about as good for a pub as a building not built 300 years ago can be. As the other yelpers have mentioned, Stoney's has a great selection of UK beer, including lots that I haven't been able to find in the US. The little box on the menu that holds the fish and chips offerings says that the breading is authentic chip shop breading and that the fish is fresh caught, flown in nightly. I think that's a little funny, considering that A) we're talking about fried fish here, guys and B) those are really elaborate lengths to go to for mediocre fried fish. Also, I don't remember there being a specific type of breading that chip shops have to use. Anyway. The fish and chips was nothing super special. Chips were the thin kind with skins on, not the "steak fries" kind you'll see around a lot of London and York chip shops. Anyway. I think I just got my hopes up a little too high with the reviews. The beer selection is good, the waitstaff was attentive, the food is reasonable, just not what I expected from an, "authentic" place. If you've never been to the UK, you'll have a fabulous time. The chips were hand cut and went really well with the pudding. The bartender knew her stuff and was very friendly. I would've given 5 stars if the beer prices were more reasonable.
