We had such a lovely meal at this local tavern in New Castle, Delaware! The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with so much old-school colonial charm that made the evening feel extra special. We started with the crab dip, which was delicious, followed by the prime rib dinner and Chicken Chesapeake--both were absolutely amazing and full of flavor. We finished with the apple crumble, which was the perfect sweet ending to a wonderful meal. Everything was delicious, and the cozy historic atmosphere made the experience even better. Such a wonderful local gem--we'll definitely be back! read more

We had to stop here while in Delaware and we were not disappointed. The area around here is so cute and we wished we had more time to take it all in. The inside wasnt huge but we easily grabbed a table and were surprised at how large the beer list was. We ended up ordering a crab melt to eat and it was delicious. Fun ambiance and great service read more

Clean very good food nice Ambiance courteous staff. Good service. Menu has some classic dishes.

What a hidden gem!! Our family had a hard time finding a place to sit because it was so packed for lunch time. Lots of food and beer to choose from but service was helpful and quick with making sure you are taken care of. They did have a couple of kids meals to choose from and plenty of options for variety of meals - everything from seafood to beef, appetizers and large portions. I didn't think the food was amazing but was pretty good. I would go back to try the 100's of options of beers they have !!! read more

It's like taking a step back in time. Low wooden beams, candles at each table. The food was delicious and freshly prepared. The crab dip was very good, and the beef and ale pot pie was amazing. read more

The food was good my wife's pulled pork sandwich and sweet potato fries were delicious. My Grill London Broil sandwich with Stilton Bleu Cheese wasn't what I hoped for! Our Appetizer flatbread with tomato, mushrooms, white wine and olive oil was very good! There's a huge selection of beers unfortunately I wasn't fond of the one I picked. They did offer a sample before I choosed. The Ice Cream was absolutely delicious but my coffee came cold. The waiter was terrific, very knowledgeable on the beers, very attentive. It's an old colonial tavern, wooden floors and a great bar! This was my first time there, others have had great experiences. So next time, I'll ask for a diffent cheese on my sandwich. read more

I was blown away by the colonial atmosphere. When seated a candle was lit at the table and I was given a old style paper menu. With it was pages of alcoholic drinks I could choose from. The music matched the atmosphere perfectly. There are old guns and pictures on the wall. The woman's bathroom had a full length ornate mirror, lovely faucet with a sink bowl. I have never seen a bathroom so welcoming to where it didn't even feel like I was in a bathroom. In the back were a lot of different types of beer one could choose from and purchase. I love the old colonial feel of the town the restaurant was in. The food and the peach cobbler was really good. The cobbler was warm and on top sat a scoop of vanilla ice cream and the other side sat whipped cream. read more

During a day of exploring New Castle this past weekend, we had lunch at Jessop's Tavern. The restaurant has a ton of history - it's located in a building originally built in 1674. It's been many things in its history, but it's been Jessop's Tavern since 1996. (The family who owns the restaurant named it after a cooper named Abraham Jessop, who lived and worked in the building in 1724.) The restaurant has a great menu of food (including dishes inspired by the cuisines important to New Castle's early history: smorgasbord, a Dutch-inspired pot roast, etc.) and an incredible list of beers (200 Belgian beers, 20+ Belgian beers on draft, and more). We shared the Jessop's Tavern Crab Dip (served in a sourdough bread bowl) for the table, and I had the New Sweden Meatloaf for my entree (meatloaf with a vodka cream sauce and lingonberry preserves). I also had a couple of colonial ales - Washington's Porter by Yards Brewing Co. (I liked it so much, I had two). The service was good, and the ambiance is great: full of colonial charm. I'm sure there are other great places to eat in New Castle, but eating at Jessop's Tavern is a special place to grab a meal if you're spending the day exploring New Castle and learning about its history. read more

A cute ye olde tavern with an extensive beer selection, good food, and an ice cream service window during the summer months to boot! I love the Shepard's pie and fish and chips. I need to try their sandwiches but I always find myself ordering the tried and true: pint of Guinness and perfectly fried and flaky fish and chips. All I need are some mushy peas, but then again - maybe not read more

Limited nearby street parking in this historic area. Enjoyed the bar seating on a wet Saturday night! The menu is more modern American than colonial era. Liked the crab pot pie. We visited on the coldest and snowiest day yet this season. The food was very good and plenty. My wife had the Fish and Chips (Definitely ask at the start for extra Tartar sauce) and I had the Chicken Pot Pie. Afterwards we shared a cobbler and ice cream. Service was a bit slow. Looked like only two servers and the place was relatively full. Ambience was terrific! Parking is unique narrow street parking so beware. But the walking to and from the restaurant is very nice. read more

The atmosphere automatically adds 50% of the rating. The age of this building is quite fun. (1674) But this is a restaurant, not a museum. We started with the crab dip bread bowl (3.5) with two beers. The crab dip was very good...filling. And then we had to go with the tavern classic and award winning fish and chips (4.6). We shared and was more than enough. And ended with the donut holes and a scoop of walnut ice cream and a beer and the old fashion. My over all experience was a 4.5. The staff sounded pleasant, we sat at the bar and our server was cool, call, collective. read more

The sheer number of different beers makes this place well worth the visit. The food portions are enough for two, not that I wanted to share. Tables are close together, but that makes it cozy. The bar staff and servers are very friendly and knowledgeable. read more

Wanted to update on an event I held at Jessop's on 6/6 for our LinkedIn Group, Delaware Tech Beers, which we hold at a local brewery/pub once a month in the Wilmington area for anyone in IT. I contacted Jessop's through their webform asking if they could accommodate anywhere from 15-40 people (number would be unknown until the event was in progress) and if they would be able to do separate checks. The owner, Justin Day, responded promptly and was willing to accommodate both these requests and allocate us a quiet area in the back of the tavern. Day before, I had a courtesy phone call which was comforting. On the event evening, we arrived to find a back room set up with tables, silverware and glasses of water, ready for us - much more than we expected. We were also assigned a dedicated server, Breanna. All in all, we had a fantastic event with close to 20 people. Beers were excellent, service was great and for those of us who ordered food (I had a delicious steak and ale pie), food was excellent. Highly recommend Jessop's once again, and especially for the flexibility and appreciation of having us. read more

I love the ambience of this place. The food is amazing too. They have a lot of unique dishes with great flavors. We had a large group. They were unable to sit us all together at the same table, but we were able to sit at a table near the bar, so we could all kind of still communicate. it's a good idea to have a reservation if you have a large group for this facility. We did not realize that they took reservations until we walked in the door. It was a great evening out. I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

What a beautiful, historic space they've created here...service was friendly...food and drink were great. Vegans can find fare here also.

Stepping into here, it felt like we were stepping back through time. Colonial Era tavern complete with appropriate Colonial Era tavern fare, atmosphere, and ambiance. And it's located in a small historic town. The menu has so many tempting choices, but we eventually went with the Shepherd's pie and fricken chicassee for our main courses, and the "Smorgas-Bord" and seafarer's chowder as starters. Everything was excellent. The drink menu is huge, but mostly beers, ciders, and wine, not many cocktails (although the well-stocked bar looks like they could handle making just about anything). The old-fashioned is one of the best I've ever had. We had the cobblestone cobbler for dessert and left happy, full, and wanting to come back again soon. For a Thursday night, this place was packed. I would recommend reservations. read more

This place was really cute inside. Not huge but in the downtown area, walkable and close to the park on the water that we were coming from. Tried Jessop's for the first time recently and had to go back since and already have a reservation for the night before Father's Day. The ambience is phenomenal. They have done a great job preserving the history. I feel transported to colonial times as soon as I walk in. They have a huge beer & drink selection and anything I've tried has been great. The menu isn't huge but it's not small either, there's plenty to choose from. And I believe they've been running specials well both times we've gone. A friend and I went here for lunch and loved it. It has character and history which makes it an interesting place to visit but the food was wonderful as well. We had the seafarer's chowder to start and it was very tasty. I had the lobster pot pie (you can choose what to include: crab, lobster, chicken or beef and ale. It was delicious and the crust was especially nice. For dessert we had the Dutch apple cakes that came with whipped cream and a choice of ice cream. The ice cream flavors are interesting as well as having typical ones. I would have liked to try several of them. It was delicious ice cream. The apple cakes were really big and tasted great. It's a nice place for drinks hit and miss on the food good ambiance. Hard pass on the Swedish meatloaf. It was dry and tasted like mystery meat. It looked like a prison brick protein meal. Hands down the coolest (due to the air conditioning and colonial tavern decor) place in New Castle to get ice cream to-go on an extremely hot day. Order at the walk-up window or inside at the hostess stand. The Woodside Farm Creamery ice cream is to die for and comes in creative flavors, such as my favorite: Motor Oil (coffee, chocolate fudge, and green caramel). We came here for dinner on our last night in the area. This is a historic tavern in a building that was originally built in the 1600s. The theme is colonial era food and vibe. I love things like that. We didn't have a reservation but were able to get seated without much of a wait. The environment was a bit loud but enjoyable. Good beer selection. We got the Hoegaarden and Limburgse Witte. For entrees we got the Roast duck hafling and the shepherd's pie. They were tasty. We finished off with the chocolate mousse cake and had a lovely night here. It's located in a very cute area, historic and well maintained. Nice overall. read more

We ordered mussels .Good amount very tasty loved the broth. We also ordered Shepherds pie. Loved it only complain the chef needs to add salt in most of their dishes. Also ordered fish and chips. Two large fried fish served with coleslaw and fried potatoes. Again I wish the fish was marinated with salt and pepper. Good experience here . Went to the tavern on the recommendation(s) of many others and was pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere and decor. A very small, divey and dark bar room with limited seating; but it works very well. I almost walked out when I found seating for an individual diner unavailable and the bar top fowled with dirty plates, empty cups, and sign receipts from the last visitors but the Bartender John turned it. He was pleasant, engaging, and attentive. Cleaned the area immediately and made some great recommendations on an amber ale. The salad was fresh and the Pot Roast dinner was exceptional good. The mashed potatoes and beef gravy were cooked to perfection. Not too loud and amazingly comfortable. The price was reasonable. Only minor detractors held this from being one of my few 5 star ratings. A very strong 4 stars (well deserved). read more

Pretty terrible experience, mostly stemming from our seemingly sick and inattentive waiter. Lunch started getting thoroughly coughed on by our waiter, who seemed to not be feeling well. From there, we hardly saw him again. Took an hour to get our food with no one checking in between to see if we wanted another drink. Food was standard bar food and the interior/vibe is what you want in a colonial tavern, but the service was pretty awful. read more
