Would love to just enjoy a meal and a beer without a political activism in my face. Beer is actually not for everyone; it's not for children, nor are drag shows. We've been coming here for three years now and it's still a great place for dinner and beer. I've even ordered takeout and it was delicious. Some would say it's pricey but the quality is above what you would find nearby. Service is always great and if you are a sports fan, you have the ability to watch a game and enjoy dinner. Stopped in for a weekday lunch with two others. Nice size parking lot, clean and welcoming exterior and interior. We were seated immediately and waiter tended to us right away. The good - while the menu is limited, the kitchen nails whats on it. Sure its bar food (sandwiches, nachos, salads) but for what it is, its pretty good. As far as beer, they keep different styles on tap as opposed to a board of 15 different IPAs throwing hops at you to hide that they don't know what they're doing. Their lager is in my regular rotation at home. The bad - service. While the food is consistent, its a crap shoot on what you're getting for service. We reallllly wanted to like it here. This is a pretty large brewery and they have a cool interior set up and an impressive amount of tvs. I'd say that's the best part. Food: my overall impression with the food was overpriced BREWERY food. This isn't a restaurant. This is a brewery and $18 for nachos without a protein is offensive. They have some basic choices for sandwiches and apps. Nothing to come back for. Drinks: I had a sour flight and many others tried various beers. Three from my group had a cocktail. Similar impression to the food, over hyped compared to the competition in middletown and north/south of here. Pretty let down, probably would look else where next time :/ read more

Unique spot right in Middletown, although it gave me more "restaurant" vibes than "brewery" vibes. They had a large selection of beers for all different types of beer drinkers from lighter lagers to a hearty 15% stout! In fact, everything was so stellar that we never even went to our original place that we drive to Middletown for. The drinks, beer, service, and food were absolutely spot on. I wish I had gotten our severs name. He was personable, knowledgeable about the offerings, and added to the overall pleasantry of the whole experience. My boyfriend and I can't wait to return. This might be my favorite brewery I've come across, and I live in Wisconsin and love beer so that says a lot!! Came here pretty much accidentally... needed a break on a driving trip and and we were actually looking for a different bar that literally didn't exist where it claimed to be located. Saw the giant print on the building and decided to stop here instead. I am soooo glad we stopped here! As a fan (snob?) of dark beer, I was so thrilled that they brewed good dark beer! They don't add gross pastry flavors and their dark beer just tastes like (delicious) beer. Our bartender was amazing, I wish I got his name, but he insisted that they prefer to brew beer that tastes like beer. My ears have never heard such sweet words lol! Tried all three of their beers that would categorize as dark (I believe a scotch ale, a coffee stout, and a dark lager?) and loved all of them. BUT THEN, they actually had cheese curds on the menu! I was very skeptical, as cheese curds outside of Wisconsin are very rare and almost always terrible. Our bartender insisted they were legit and they even order them from a farm in Wisconsin. Oh my! They were lightly battered and fried to perfection. It felt like I was back home. It made my day. They batter and fry the cheese curds in-house, so I asked if I could get the plain old squeaky cheese curds in a bag to go. I think I got some weird looks, but they obliged and I got to take home a bag of legit Wisconsin cheese curds. Oh my goodness. You must check this place out, it is perfection. read more

My friend and I had reservations for 6pm. We sat inside but the brewery has like an open air concept which was nice! Especially during Covid times. We ordered our beer flights at the counter and ordered our food through the qr code at our table. First off all my beers I had were amazing. Lots of selection of IPAs which I loved. The food was also amazing! My friend and I both got two tacos each and split a classic poutine. I got the bulgogi taco and shrimp taco. Yummmm! Flavors were on point. We always like to try new breweries and wineries. My husband found this and we took a ride. The building is very roomy and bright. You order from the QR code on table and they bring your food and beverages. This allows the staff to visit and offer help without having to worry about taking orders and tallying your bill. The food was delicious! We split pretzel nuggets (tons of dips to chose from) and picked 3 tacos. We had shrimp, fish and brisket. All hot and fresh. I've been to first state several times since my first visit. It still remains one of my top favorites in Middletown! I'm giving this visit three stars. The staff is always pleasant, professional and knowledgeable about the menu. However, this time our server didn't know what was on the menu. They have seasonal menu that changes frequently. There were lots of items in the menu we wanted to order and she would put them in and then come back and tell us "oh we no longer have that"; or she would tell us they didn't have items when they actually did have them. It made ordering a bit confusing and frustrating. We ordered the charcuterie, which general we are big fans of. I was a bit disappointed with the amount of cheese and meat they actually give you. I mean we were shocked when we saw these two little triangles of goat cheese, especially when you think about the price your paying for this board. Other than that the accompaniments on the board were delicious, especially the jams. Chicken and waffles were delicious! Lots of ingredients and everything works perfectly together. This was my first time ever having poutine so I can't speak on whether it's the best I've ever had. But it's French fries and gravy, what's not to like? We got ours with the scrapple on top. I wish there was a way to make the scrapple more crispy, but that may be hard with gravy. Street corn salad is always win! read more

Great experience from start to finish. We were seated immediately on a slightly busy Saturday night. I really enjoyed the ambiance and the restaurant/bar was very clean. Cute outdoor seating area as well. Not a beer expert but they had an extensive and diverse beer selection. We tried one the recommended flights and Gin marg. Favorite part of the night was the brisket egg rolls, so juicy and flavorful. We sat at the bar and service was beyond attentive and friendly. I absolutely love this place when I'm in town. There is something for everyone here- from drinks to food. The staff is very informative about your choices and can navigate you through their many many options. I love that they offer non traditional food choices (and seasonal specials!)- it isn't your same old American bar food/brewery atmosphere. The food is just as good as the beer/drinks. I always leave full and often leave with leftovers. I would recommend trying a flight to sample different beers- there were many that I was unsure about that I ended up really enjoying and buying some to take home with me. You can't go wrong with any of the food, but my favorites are Blue Hen Chicken Sandwich, Bulgogi Taco, Scrapple Sandwich, and Charcuterie. We usually make a reservation and I would recommend that. Free stickers are a plus! It makes sense that they've won so many awards since opening. Highly recommend. read more

After a long day trip of driving to and back from Lancaster, my buddy and I were debating on where to get some good food and beer. He recently went to First State Brewery and highly recommended the spicy chicken sandwich. Since I hadn't been to First State Brewery yet, we both decided to go here. It was quite busy on a late Saturday afternoon, so we decided to just sit at the bar. One of the servers/bartender immediately gave us menus and promptly took our orders. I ended up getting two beers, Mind Elevation and Tactical Exploitation. The tasting notes of Mind Elevation was supposed to have mango and pineapple, but in my opinion it was a little too hoppy. The hops muted out the fruit notes. Tactical Exploitation contained Peach and Tangerine notes, which definitely came through while still maintaining a good level of hops. With the chicken sandwich wars raging on at almost every restaurant and bar, I like to sample whenever I get a chance at a new established I haven't trie. My buddy told me that the Fightin' Blue Hen is massive and he definitely wasn't joking around. When a server brought it out, I was astounded at the sheer size of it. I tried eating it with my hands, but the two chicken breasts kept sliding out. The potato bun literally soaked up the spicy sauce and disintegrated. I ended up using my fork to eat the sandwich in two halves since it was such a struggle. The chicken was cooked perfectly and I loved the added pickle slices. The smaller version of the sandwich, Baby Blue Hen is about $2 cheaper. In my opinion, paying an additional $2 which technically amounts to a whole additional sandwich is worth it when it comes to ordering the Fightin' Blue Hen! I opted for the fries and I was recommended the Sweet Sriracha Aioli dipping sauce. Loved the selection of food and drinks. Definitely will be coming back here very soon with some out of town friends and family. read more

What a hidden gem. Beer is fantastic and the staff is so nice. The place is veryyyyy clean as well. Definitely try their Coniferous Tranquility (botanical white IPA). Don't knock it til you try it. The flavors are way different but surprisingly refreshing. Lastly, they have a full kitchen with a great menu. Stop by and enjoy a beer and some food. You won't be disappointed.
