My latest travels took me through Middletown, Delaware. I drove into the city around 5 pm, and I was so hungry, I could eat the butt out of a skunk. With a quick search for local restaurants, I came across Randazzo's Trattoria. I punched in the address of 103 Patriot Drive into the GPS, and off I went. They have some merch by the front door in a little branch-off area to the left as you walk in. Then I turned right and met with a queue of people waiting for a table. Very rarely do I run into a queue waiting to get into a local restaurant. However, everyone I've ever visited has been so worth the wait. Again, my foodie senses were tingling in a good way. As I waited, the counter was to the left, and behind the cashier, you could watch the staff make the pizzas. I was mesmerized. I love places that have an open view of the kitchen. There is something poetic I find about watching a cook or a chef prepare a dish in the kitchen. I overheard the hostess talking to the couple in front of me about their reservation. So good tip, if this place is going to be a return stop, make a reservation. When it was my turn, the hostess was friendly and showed me to my table. I sat with a perfect view, directly looking at the kitchen door. So, there was more to the kitchen in this place than just the pizza counter I saw as I stood at the front. The place is a flurry of activity. The wait staff was flying through the place, getting drinks, delivering food, and getting refills. My waitress told me later on that they were short-staffed, which explained all the activity. Again, the staff was really hustling, which included the hostess. When she wasn't showing guests to their tables, she cleared tables, ran orders, and got drinks. I started with the side salad that came with my meal. It looked and tasted fresh with a wonderful balsamic vinaigrette. It was a delicious and delightful beginning of the meal. I didn't see any rusty lettuce, and it wasn't served on a cold plate, which suggests it was plated earlier in the day and kept refrigerated until serving time. It doesn't always mean that; sometimes, places refrigerate the plates they use for serving salads, and that's not a bad thing. But I have come across places that have done the aforementioned offense, and you can usually tell with the lettuce and other veggies being dried out and not tasting as good as fresh ingredients. This was not the case with Randazzo's side salad. Next, whenever I see garlic knots on the menu, I have to order them. What can I say, I'm a huge lover of all things bread. Especially when it's covered in garlicky goodness. For me, these knots were perfectly made. They pulled apart, steam escaping from the now-exposed crumb within. The crust had just the right crispness. And the overall chew was wonderful. The interesting part of this dish, for me, was the sauce. It was a thin, semi-watery sauce. It had a mild taste, and the seasoning wasn't overbearing. It complemented the garlic knot well. To my taste buds, the sauce became the welcome mat to the goodness of the garlic knots. As it hit my tongue first, it was like it was saying, Welcome. Allow me to introduce you to my friend, the garlic knot. These are a must-try if you ever visit the restaurant. Then it was on the big show. The main course. I ordered their Chicken Piccata with Linguini. In all the dishes I've had, it's always been served with breaded chicken. This one threw me a bit with them making it with grilled chicken. But my goodness, it did not disappoint. The chicken was so tender. Perfectly cooked. And look at this portion! The picture does not do it justice because it was a massive plate. The other star of this dish was the sauce. Most dishes I've had are a mixture of lemony butter, maybe white wine, broth, or sometimes oil. This was not your plain Jane Piccata sauce. The lemon and butter were definitely there. I think I tasted a hint of wine, but they either added flour or something else that gave it a little more body and a creamier texture. And the Capers! They were huge. I've never seen capers that large. They just added that little extra to the dish with their little pop of lemony smoothness when you bite into them. And the linguini was wonderful and cooked perfectly. The dopamine my brain was flooding my body with sent me deeper into gastronomic bliss with each bite. Before I knew it, I had finished the entire plate. My stomach yelled at me later as I waddled my way out to my car, but damn, it was worth it. My overall experience with Randazzo's Trattoria was absolutely wonderful. The staff was warm and friendly, even as they ran around the restaurant, truly hustling. And I speak from experience, that is not easy to do when you're working a full shift. If you ever find yourself in Middletown, Delaware, I strongly suggest stopping by Randazzo's and giving them a try. read more

The restaurant is tastefully decorated, and the warm welcome and friendly staff helped make this an enjoyable dinner. The food arrived quickly, and we could tell the items were plated with care. Our server was attentive and friendly. My friends's dinner was delicious, and mine was not made as expected... But still pretty good. We are planning to go back and try some additional dishes! just heard about this place so my friend wanted to try it. I must say they had the best chicken piccata I have ever had. It was full of flavor and their Italian wedding soup was delicious. My husband and I had lunch here over the holidays with some friends. The service was great and the place was bright and cheery and clean. The I had a really fresh side salad and we had the bruschetta which was delicious. For my meal, I ordered the cavatelli with spinach and sausage in a white wine sauce - it was really good BUT it was swimming in the sauce (which basically tasted like chicken broth) so it was really more of a soup, and I was wanting a good pasta dish so I was a little disappointed. Very popular trattoria in a town hungry for pizza and Italian food. Takeout in front, restaurant and bar as you go inside. Highlights: Friendly attentive waitstaff, plenty of people working to keep the food and drinks flowing. Pizza of so many kinds, including a Sicilian square pizza that looked loaded with cheese and well baked. Other pizzas like "Southwestern Chicken", a "Philly Cheesesteak" pizza and standards you'd expect. And of course, Stromboli Pasta and salads as you'd expect from a trattoria. Special was a stuffed flounder: A dessert case with cannoli, cheesecake and other sweets. Many kinds of soft drinks including specialty sodas and Italian orange. The antipasto salad is incredible. Fresh, handmade. Can be made "chopped or served with rolls of ham, salami and much more. The "house salad" side salad that comes with some pasta dishes does not use bagged "Spring Mix" but has fresh cut juicy lettuces, fresh cucumbers and grape tomatoes. No onion. Lowlights: Pasta was flabby and overcooked and the ricotta tasted starchy, tomato sauce was flavorless. No one asked why the diner left 3/4 of the plate and didn't want a takeaway box. Not enjoyable. Skip the stuffed pastas and order pizza or panini or salads. Summary: pizzas, salads, sandwiches, panini, everything you'd expect from a neighborhood Italian place and reasonable prices. Great place to hang or just for takeaway. The community has embraced them with open arms and full tables. read more

Randazzo is the latest Italian dining option serving the MOT area. For this occasion, we had to get take out instead of dining in due to certain circumstances. Even for take out, the pizzas were well prepared and tasted great. Besides pizzas, their menu offers plenty of traditional Italian dishes. Pricing are fair when compared to others. When the opportunity comes again, we'll be dining in instead, and trying out some of the other delicious Italian entrees. read more

The special, which was shrimp, scallops with linguine had NO taste. And it cost $32.00. The scallops were rubbery and the bread was stale. When we paid the bill it showed a total if paying with cash and if paying by credit card it was more money. This place was more like a diner and not a family Italian restaurant. Would not recommend. Two experiences. Went in wife had chicken parm with pasta was very happy. I had chicken Marshall and was extremely disappointed. Gravy was think and there was no coating on the chicken. OK so I said well let try the pizza. I ordered 5 topping pizza. Over $35. Not talking at the price it is what it is. Buttt you could count the pepperoni and sausage pieces on one hand and the mushrooms, onions and peppers on the other. Totally disappointed because each were extra and the amount was spare. The sausage did not taste right...not saying it was spoiled but it did not taste like anything I ever tasted and the sauce was meh. I wont be back. 2 for 2 for a disappointing meal. Wish I took a picture of the pizza. Through it out because something tasted off. Stopped here around 8:30 pm when traveling through. Had penne with broccoli and spinach with marina instead of the white sauce it generally comes with. It was very good and the marina was outstanding. Came with Italian bread which was great for sopping up the sauce. Service was great as they close at 9 but did not pressure us to hurry. Our third time at this location. The good: Very nice wait staff. Menu is robust. Food is flavorful. The bad: Our second time with the lasagna. It comes out cold in the center. Not ice cold, but certainly not hot. Knowing the first experience, we made sure to state we wanted it HOT. I appreciate that during this recent visit, the chef came out with a meat thermometer to prove us wrong. But my husband and I had the same experience: the center was lukewarm (at best). Oh well. If we do come back, we know to avoid the lasagna. PS: lighting is stark in the dining room. Lower wattage would make for a more intimate feel. read more

Ate here on Friday night for dinner. They were still doing their soft opening. The place was super busy around 6:00 when we got there and it sounded like they were doing a lot of pizza orders. My wife and I ate in. I got the eggplant parmigiana and my wife got tortellini Sofia Loren. Both dishes were great. My eggplant was crispy and not soggy from being fried. My wife got the tiramisu for dessert and she loved it. We will most definitely be back. read more

My wife and I had sampled a few different pizzas here, and we were pleasantly surprised by the variety--each one consistently fresh and full of flavor. We finally decided to branch out and order full meals. My wife chose the manicotti, and I went with the cavatelli with sausage and spinach. We also added garlic knots to the order. My wife described the manicotti as excellent. As for my cavatelli--it was, without exaggeration, the most delicious meal I've had in decades (maybe ever?). Had heard the hype over this place. Finally got the chance to try them. We ordered two pizzas(meat lovers and a meatball,onion,pepper). We did pick up. Staff were very friendly and welcomed me as I came in. Pizza was ready ahead of estimated time. Smelled great the whole ride home... couldn't wait to dig in. Get home... meat lovers was solid, but the other pizza was extremely disappointing. They skimped on the toppings. Paid $3 a topping($9 total) and can barely find an onion. The peppers and meatballs were light as well. 2 of the pieces we used as cheese for my younger son since they literally had almost no toppings on them(not in the picture). At $3 a pop for toppings, I expected more. Tasted ok. Nothing to write home about. I added Parmesan, red pepper and hot honey which made it a lot better. Our sever seemed more bothered to serve us, didn't want to explain any specials even when we asked, messed up several drink orders and was just plain non-existent if we needed anything. If it wasn't for one of the kitchen staff and bartender tending to us, we wouldn't have received anything. Just seemed so unorganized with items constantly going to wrong tables. We were overcharged for items sent to the table that we didn't order or eat. I emailed the restaurant but never heard back about it. If you go here, just don't expect the best service and I'd recommend not going over the weekends. Sicilian pizza is okay, not enough sauce. I thought I saw arancini in the front case, not on the menu though, and server wasn't up on explaining any specials. Probably give it a while before I try it again.
