Caruso's is so underrated. We avoided it for a while due to the low reviews on here and we were missing out. Went expecting to get takeout, but were surprised that it's a fine in spot. Has a low key friendly neighborhood restaurant feel. The staff was very friendly and attentive. The food was excellent. Tried the Chicken Marsala, Chicken Sorrentina, Francese and the seafood dish. Two experiences. Went in wife had chicken parm with pasta was very happy. I had chicken Marshall and was extremely disappointed. Gravy was think and there was no coating on the chicken. OK so I said well let try the pizza. I ordered 5 topping pizza. Over $35. Not talking at the price it is what it is. Buttt you could count the pepperoni and sausage pieces on one hand and the mushrooms, onions and peppers on the other. Totally disappointed because each were extra and the amount was spare. The sausage did not taste right...not saying it was spoiled but it did not taste like anything I ever tasted and the sauce was meh. I wont be back. 2 for 2 for a disappointing meal. Wish I took a picture of the pizza. Through it out because something tasted off. Pizza and salads are good here. However, twice I ordered Chicken Piccata with same result. Pasta is overcooked. Piccata was in lemony garlic sauce with capers that were mushy and tasteless and the dish had mushrooms in it. Traditional Piccata does not have mushrooms, so it's a bit of a surprise. Service was good but there is no "ambiance" here. It's a pizza shop. The music is too loud to have a normal conversation and the tables are close together. read more

We made this our stop before a Saturday night movie. This is a small location, but we got there when is was not a lot of others dining in. Their pick up service seem to be jumping! The crazy crab fries were just what I needed to hit my craving for some good fries! Perfect amount of crab, bacon, and cheese. Would definitely order again. The penne although it was just broccoli and spinach did not have alot of flavor! The oil and garlic were about it. Now the Cavatelli Alla Caruso seemed to be much better. Lots of sausage were provide and the portion was perfect. I hope to give this establishment another try as they have a huge variety. This place use to be absolutely fantastic! However, last 2-3 times they have been abysmal! Literally sent me wrong item once and made it like it was my fault that they mixed the order up and gave a "partial refund"! Delivery today was $41.50 that was a complete waste of money! Pizza was great, cheese was just right and crust was perfect. Bread and salad came with the stuffed shells which was also delish. The actual shells with cheese were a little dry so I probably wouldn't recommend them. Also got some zeppolis, different from what we have in felton but the kids didn't mind gobbling up. Service was friendly as were all the employees and bathroom was clean. Only thing I didn't like was several workers smoking out front as we we're coming in. It always makes you wonder if they are washing hands before they are handling food. I try not to think about it but my one kid wouldn't eat after she saw it. read more

I visited Caruso's yesterday for lunch with a friend. Given that my friend lives in Chestertown, MD, and I'm currently staying at my parents' place in Newark, DE, Middletown seemed like a convenient midway point to meet. Neither of us knows the dining scene in Middletown very well, so I used my trusty Yelp app to find a restaurant open at 11:30am on Mondays. Caruso's fit the bill, so I suggested it and my friend agreed to meet me there. Upon arrival, I was greeted and invited to seat myself by a guy who I assume was either the owner or shift manager. I was then approached by a woman who handed me a menu and asked me to order at the counter when I was ready. My friend showed up a few minutes later, and I gave her the menu to look over and told her that we'd need to order at the counter. Once she'd decided what to order, we ordered and paid at the counter as requested. To try to offset the voracious eating that I've been doing over the holidays, I went with the bacoli salad ($9.95), which consisted of romaine lettuce, sliced tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, and black olives dressed with olive oil. My friend went with the chicken sandwich ($5.95) and a side of onion rings ($4.95). My order was brought to the table within 5 min., but my friend's took at least 5 min. longer, presumably because it required cooking in addition to assembly. This was slightly awkward for me, given that, on one hand, I was hungry, but on the other, I didn't want to start eating before her order was fulfilled, given that it would seem rather rude. Although my salad was large and aesthetically pleasing, it was extremely simplistic and bland in flavor. At least 85% of it was lettuce, the tomatoes were unripe (I should have known better than to order something with fresh tomatoes in the winter in DE, but still...), and the dressing was only olive oil with no vinegar. I tried one olive and it seemed like the canned/jarred variety--although I can't say for sure given that I generally dislike olives--so I didn't eat any more. The fresh mozz was the only redeeming aspect of the salad that provided any flavor. As such, the ingredients and composition of this salad failed to justify its price. I didn't try either of the items that my friend ordered, but suffice it to say that I was unimpressed by the bacoli salad. If I lived in the area, I might be willing to give Caruso's another chance and order something different, like the pizza or pastas. As it were, I think I'll suggest somewhere different if my friend and I meet in Middletown again. read more

Popped into this cute little gem to grab dinner to-go while cutting through town. Excellent service! They quickly took our phone order and had the food ready ahead of when it was expected. The food was well packed and ready to go to be eaten at our destination. The food was great! We ordered manicotti and chicken parm with pasta. The dinners came with small salads and bread. Has such a bad experience here. Came with 2 adults and 2 kids. Ordered 2 adult beverages and 2 sodas. We ordered an appetizer because he children were starving. The adults each ordered sandwiches and the kids got a child's spaghetti and chicken fingers. The first thing to the table was the adult sandwiches, after 20 minutes, followed by the adult beverages and then the sodas. The kids meals came out at 30 minutes. Followed by the appetizers (calamari) at 40 minutes. The waitress apologized too much as if this happened all the time. We asked that the appetizer be removed. We had eaten and were full. The owner sent a cook to tell us he would give us $10 off but no more. The owner was there but refused to speak to us. I will never go here again. Don't order a steak Stromboli because it does not come with steak!! Steak was so sparse that we had to move the loads of onions and peppers and cheese to find it. Then when we called them to request they make another one "with steak", they asked us to bring the first one back before they make a new one so they can inspect it. Once we took it back, they rudely pointed out the 10 specks of steak and couldn't understand what the problem was. They hesitantly agreed to make a replacement Stromboli but it wasn't much better. They were rude and not concerned about pleasing the customer. As we left the restaurant, another customer who overheard our conversation said he had brought back food many times before. An awesome stop! We stopped here on the way home from the beach because there was an accident, it was a perfect place. We had a Margarita pizza that was fabulous, ordered a side of broccoli (done Italian contorni style) for our kids that were having mozz sticks, both were great! And the chicken pastini soup was a huge hit with my pickiest kid so she stole it from me;) it's a small and cozy, clean space and nicely decorated, looks like someone really cares and the staff was great.
