Their bartenders are great, friendly, and know what they're doing. We went to Kate's for their weekend brunch for the first time, pulled in by their $5 mimosas and were so pleased we did. Party of 10, we came to see the sleigh and decor, after being wowed last year. We had a corner round table that accommodated all of us nicely, and is much more preferable to a rectangular table in terms of communicating with the entire group. I anticipated some delay on our food, but I was wrong. It all came out at about the same time, after our delicious appetizers. I had the salmon, and not only was the portion filing, it was so tasty! It wasn't very busy when we arrived for an early dinner and service was really slow. There were times we could not get our server's attention or was told she was busy. We just saw her in the beginning to order and at the end; however, we needed refills and ketchup during service so we were a little disappointed. The beggars purse pasta had a nice pesto like sauce and the pasta was al dente. There were a fewer shrimps than expected for the price. The salmon beurre blanc was average and the carrots in the medley were a little too undercooked as it was crunchy compared to the other vegetables. The Kates Rum Bucket was decent in terms of flavor but it was more like a juice as opposed to a cocktail as there was hardly any alcohol in it. This is a long-standing bar in a college town that happens to serve food. My wife and I were visiting my daughter for parents weekend and decided to hit this place up for Sunday brunch. As a student in the 1980's, I didn't have enough papers to be able to patronize this place back then. The food was very good; however, the kitchen is slow. We visited my son at University of Delaware and he took us here for lunch. The only reason they get a 4 instead of 5 is that it was 1:30pm. Only the brunch menu was available. The menu change occurs at 2pm. I did struggle to find something I wanted to eat at first. My husband had the crab bisque and a chicken Caesar wrap. He really enjoyed both. My son had the Sunny Side burger with a side Caesar salad. The burger was huge; he didn't finish it all although he was able to finish the fries. I had the sweet and spicy wrap. Klondike Kates is a place that I've been coming to for years. It's definitely a great college bar to go to for cheap drinks and entertainment. But as a restaurant, I've noticed the quality in food has gone down. They have taken so many things off the menu, and the things they decided to keep are pretty basic. The Buffalo bills chicken sandwich and bbq pulled pork Mac and cheese sandwich are what I've tried most recently. They're fine, nothing to ride home about. There was A LOT more pulled pork than Mac and cheese on the sandwich. It was to the point where you couldn't really taste the Mac and cheese. The bbq sauce was also very overpowering and didn't really have a Smokey taste to it. And the fries were pretty underwhelming. Barely warm and tasted kind of old. I hate saying this about the food because I truly still love this place. Their drinks are always on point, and the service here is always awesome. Solid Pub! The place is very charming.., the beer is cold to perfection and the food is pretty good as well. We had for appetizers a monstrosity of a nacho chicken bbq plate that was DELICIOUS! For me, hands down the best plate of the lunch. I've been here twice, once on a Thursday (lunch wing special, dine-in only), and one on a Wednesday (lunch half off wraps, sandwiches, and salads dine-in only). Every day of the week there is a lunch dine-in special. This place gets packed, a lot of people waiting for a table. However, they move fast! I didn't wait too long to be seated, waited about 10 mins for a server to introduce herself, and 15-20 mins for the food to come out. I got a chicken chaser wrap with French fries! Klondike Kate's has been around for ever. I first visited KK's when I was a college student, and I finally returned as a family man and father of two boys. We came because they offer a kids eat free deal on Wednesday night, which included free face painting and balloon animals. There are about 6 options for kids (free meal with the purchase of an adult meal). It comes with a junior entree, side, and drink. My wife ordered a salmon salad. I ordered a small plate of loaded nachos that included chopped up chicken fingers, fries, and a load of other ingredients. I should not have ordered this, as it's more for sharing and I couldn't finish half of it. Rather, my recollection of KK's from my younger days included tasty jumbo buffalo wings. Klondike Kate's is a Newark staple, and it's easy to see why. 1. It's a bar 2. In the center of town 3. On Main Street 4. Of a college town. There is nothing good or bad to say about this place. My food was ok, the service was ok, the noise level was ok, even with a live musician on a sunny Sunday morning. We were mostly left on our own once we ordered, as every seat was filled during our visit, and ours was not their ideal Sunday morning table. (College students with their parents.) I was glad that the TVs had no sound playing, and was confused about the choice of programming an AirFryer infomercial, but it did eventually change to a varsity basketball game. As for our food, two at our table ordered burgers, one had the yogurt parfait, because as Donkey explained to Shrek "Everyone likes parfait. Parfaits are delicious!" Unfortunately the parfait was really just a big bowl of yogurt and granola, but it was tasty, even if not in its proper form. I had the breakfast Tator Totchos, which were ok, but drowning in so much cheese sauce that the tots were mush. The poached eggs on top were nicely done. It's been nearly 30 years since my student days in Newark, and even then I was not part of the "bar on Main Street" crowd. (RIP Subway, you were my first, and I still judge all other Subway experiences against you.) There are so many new and wonderful places in the area, most with food and service better than ok. Take your parents to those places and skip Klondike Kate's unless the specials are truly spectacular. read more
