She was so informative and told us about the specials. She provided extra information about them being farm to table, etc. Colleen made excellent drinks too. Went there last night. First of all, the location is absolutely beautiful - such a positive add to the N. Wilmington area. Comfortable spacious seating in a lodge setting. Our server Nicholas was wonderful. We shared the crab dip appetizer. I had lemon chicken linguine, and my husband had the shrimp scampi. All were absolutely delicious. The only slight drawback is I would comment that the crab dip was a bit too small. We will be back soon! read more

Well visited again last night. Had reservations for 8, had to move it to 8:30. It took 4 phone calls before we could get a person. I hate automated calls. So impersonal. We were seated at the last table in another room, off of the main dining area. It had no ambience. Seated next to us was a couple who must have been hard of hearing. Heard every word they were discussing. Our waiter, Chris, came over in a timely matter, but I told him we probably would not be staying. He offered to move us, but my husband was not interested in staying. We felt like we were afterthoughts. Might return, but not on the weekends. This place is very nice, & apparently needed as an alternative to the chain restaurants, even though it has several other areas. The bar is our favorite. My advice, don't go on the weekends unless you specify you want the main dining room, although it will be noisy. read more

Our monthly supper club had a great experience here. Was a first visit for most. All were really pleased with entree selections ranging from short ribs, salmon, chicken, and shrimp and scallops. We had the best experience last night at The Blackwall Barn & lodge. Everything from our host, server Marvin, to managers on staff were fantastic. We took my mom out for her birthday and had great cocktails, flaming crab dip, and house made pastas. Everything was excellent! Our server had great personality and was very friendly! Surprised to see negative reviews, this place is great! It is a little difficult to find. It's behind the "Wonder" food restaurant but navigation takes you to AstraZeneca. The restaurant is simply beautiful, very high ceilings and a "lodge" feel hence the name lodge in the title. The drinks were excellent and the table favorite was the blood orange fusion (pictured). The service was great, food excellent, and ambience was amazing. There was a live fire to warm the restaurant up. The manager gave us a tour of the restaurant and they also have a beautiful banquet hall, perfect for weddings and private events. Overall, excellent experience and will return. The only negatives were the bread was too salty and fries a bit too salty but still overall good. This restaurant just opened - so I'm looking forward to seeing how it evolves! read more

Back in December, my family decided to visit Blackwall to celebrate my birthday in January. We had to wait until reservations opened up on 1/16, and made them for the 24th at 6:30. Two of my kids arrived at 6:15 pm, advised the hostess, and got drinks at the bar. The rest of us arrived at 6:25 pm, let the hostess know, and joined them at the bar, but there were no seats available in the bar area. We had nowhere to stand because they had given up the 2 seats at the bar, thinking we would be seated soon, and it was zero degrees outside, so that wasn't an option. At 7:10, we were told our table was ready, and at 7:15, they crammed the 6 of us into a booth. Three of the party are over 6'2, so this was very tight and uncomfortable. The manager did apologize for the wait and comped 3 appetizers, but that just wasn't enough to make us ever want to visit again. I spent the entire meal jammed into a tiny corner against the wall. We also spent a lot of time with empty drinks and empty water glasses. We shared brussels sprouts, fried lobster, and crab dip. I ordered the scallop and shrimp risotto, which was tasty. RJ said his steak was "good" but gave this place a 1 for the experience. When we were asked if we wanted another round or dessert, the answer was no. I'm bumping to a 2 because at least the wait was recognized, and we did get 3 free appetizers. read more

I fully admit this review is because the brunch menu was not for me. I say that because, for a $50 price point, I was not able to enjoy all of the elements that make up such a price point. What made this extra difficult is that the brunch buffet was the only menu available during our visit. There is no secondary option for à la carte during the brunch timeslot. With that said, overall, the food was pretty good. Loved the fried chicken and waffles. The vanilla puff pastry was my favorite of all of the pastry desserts. And I appreciated that the shrimp and grits were split so that I could indulge in as many grits as I wanted without shellfish. The overall vibe reminds me of a hunting lodge. It is very big for the space that it is in, so would be great for events. Even through a buffet service, the staff was very attentive. Loved the special on the brunch cocktails. I have been here three times now. So obviously, I like it. It is a nice relaxed atmosphere that works as a lunch/dinner with family or as a happy hour with colleagues. I can't say that I have had anything that was a standout. However, I enjoyed the chicken pot pie and French fries. The burger is also good. The service has been consistently good too. read more

I had a disappointing experience at this restaurant And have been more than once hoping for improvements. While the staff were friendly, it seemed the restaurant was not set up for success. The buffet was subpar and not good value for the price. Drinks are served from cans rather than a fountain, so each refill is an extra cost. If you have kids who enjoy lemonade, you're better off at Chick-fil-A, where it tastes homemade. Overall, it felt like the owners may not fully understand the market or the competition. We spent $200 for three people and left really unhappy. I hope they can make changes, but I cannot recommend this restaurant in its current state. read more

Mark, our server was just the right combo of attentive but not hovering - love that he kept replenishing our biscuit basket. Food-wise, a few improvements would knock them into 5 stars: Calamari was good -the batter was perfect. Add a lemon wedge and would be even better. Appreciated the 2 very different sauces. The crab soup tasted like very salty beef barley - how is that even possible? (Yes, fabulous Mark took it off our check without being asked.) I got the special St Louis ribs - everything was super tasty on that plate except that....man, those ribs were not tender or fall off the bone. Maybe cooked at too high a temp for too short of a time.....i would have taken them off the specials as we were the last diners of the evening. Ok...new joint...the table we were seated at wobbled...this is NOT a dive bar...it's a new joint...your tables should not wobble. Servers are wearing jeans...yet this is supposed to be fine dining. These are just my first impressions. So I byte on the $18 burger...it's good...I ordered medium, it was medium-well...I'd rather they go over than under...but I could get the same thing at Stanley's for $15.... My wife got the salmon/kale entree salad...the salmon was prepared well, but not a real exciting entree... $4 for a can of Diet Coke was excessive... Overall, they're not as good as they think they are...Happy Hour (or Gathering Hour as they call it) is probably the next time I visit. Came here for lunch with my boyfriend while passing through Delaware on the way to NJ/NY. The food was super yummy. They give you these adorable cheddar bay biscuits with butter to start off. Every meal is better with free bread at the beginning! And I had the strawberry iced tea while my bf had an old fashioned. My bf said his drink was really well balanced. My drink was very good, sweet and strawberry tasting without tasting artificial like many strawberry drinks. It also had real strawberries in it! For appetizers, we got the flaming crab dip with pita dippers. It came super fast. They light the dip on fire, which was fun to watch. My boyfriend devoured it. lol For entrees, I got the mahi mahi tacos with fries. I thought the fries needed more seasoning, but otherwise they were good. The mahi mahi was fried and had an orange sauce sauce with a bit of a kick. I like my mahi mahi a bit lighter, not fried, but the tacos were still good. My boyfriend got this pasta with chicken, sausage, and shrimp in a creamy sauce. His pasta tasted sooo good. It was a crescent shaped pasta with ridges on the back and the sauce was super yummy. I would have gotten it if it didn't have shrimp in it. So glad he ordered it! Our server Christian was amazing--super knowledgeable about the menu and very nice. Tried it again last week. I was hopeful this visit would be better. Bread was stale. Burger overcooked and dry. Chicken pot pie had barely any chicken. The food seemed microwaved, drinks were not made properly twice, the ambiance is cool but that's about it. Staff is very friendly. Service is slow. I was there a few months ago and made a similar review and was asked to email. I did three times. No response. I just think this place is in the wrong location. There are so many restaurants with similar price points in the area that have fresh food and much better service. read more

My husband and I had a disappointing dining experience at Blackwall. His snake bite pasta was runny while my chicken pot pie was flavorless, with dry chicken and little in the way of vegetables. There was an extremely loud wedding in the adjacent room . The restaurant itself is noisy but when the door to wedding opened which happened frequently, the noise was deafening. I suppose the $15 glass of wine was the high point. I wish we had eaten someplace else. read more

The restaurant and bar area was lively and crowded with a well dressed crowd. Update. I'm disappointed that I never heard anything back from the restaurant after providing my contact information as they requested. However, I was there again last weekend with a friend whose meal they comped. It was busy and noisy. Service was good. The waiter had to apologize a few times because the bar was backed up, but the drinks when we got them were very good. This time I tried the crab cakes which were okay, not phenomenal. Crab chunks were big and meaty and there were no membranes, which was great. but there was quite a bit of bread. We ordered espresso to pour over ice cream for dessert. The espresso came out in a reasonable amount of time, but it was cold by the time the ice cream arrived. The waiter did bring us more espresso, but how long does it take to serve ice cream? It's not an inexpensive place to go, and I expect it to be awesome. Maybe my expectations are too high, but it still seems to be working out the details. read more
