This was my first trip back to Deerfield since it was sold to the state. The property is still as beautiful as I remember, if not more so. The employees in the Pub & Grille are friendly and the food is tasty. So far we have tried the burgers and the sausage and pepper sandwiches. The portions are large and the burgers were juicy and cooked perfectly, as was the sausage and pepper sandwich. Been golfing here for years and has become a tradition with some friends. This year they canceled our tee time due to weather (which I understand) but refused to extend a voucher we had. I was very disappointed by this. I will be golfing somewhere else in the future. read more

I attended a wedding on a Friday in august. The venue is pretty and the couple got married near the 18th hole. The bridal party (and guests for that matter) had to walk very far to get to the aisle and one bridesmaid even tripped because there was nothing on the grass to help (I've seen other venues do carpet or plywood). The service was not very good. The servers were not very polite and one ignored us when we asked if he could take our pictures. Bartenders were fast but not friendly- it's a party so it'd be nice if they pumped guests up (and would also help with their sales). It was also a very far walk from the reception area to the restrooms. Parking is easy although a valet option would be nice for events like this. read more

I had the worst food experience here of any golf course I have ever been to. I ordered the burger and fries on the turn and needless to say it was disappointing. The burger was undercooked and completely unseasoned. I ended up throwing it away after the first couple bites. The fries looked like they came right out of the freezer from the grocery store and tasted like it to. The fries also had no seasoning, not even a spec of salt. Worst of all is that I immediately felt sick after eating this food and had to stick it out for the last nine holes trying not to shit myself. Don't order food from here, save your money and get something that won't make you sick auger your round is over. read more

I'm writing to thank the supervisors and staff at Deerfield for all that was done to make our fundraising golf tournament and silent auction a great success. This was our 27th golf tournament and by all accounts it was the best we've had. I have never heard so many positive comments even though we've had very good experiences at other public and private courses. In my experience, golf tournaments are judged by the quality of the course, the organization of the event, and the food that is provided. All were outstanding. The course was in great shape and the box lunch and dinner both received rave reviews. In addition to organizing the event for my Rotary Club, I also played in the tournament along with three friends who never hesitate to tell me what's wrong with an outing. I was pleasantly surprised to hear only positive comments about the course and particularly about the food. That is very high praise that I must pass along. What particularly impressed me though, as the organizer of the event (and the one who would take the blame when things go wrong), was the quality of the staff members we dealt with throughout the planning and the implementation of the plan. Lizette Kennedy was the consummate professional who delivered on every promise, guided me through the process step-by-step, and was truly a pleasure to deal with. Heather and Michael in the golf pro office were fabulous too! They guided me through the details of the various events and truly came through with every aspect of the day's activities. In fact, I dealt with quite a few of the staff members who were all very pleasant and seemingly could not do enough to ensure a positive outcome. Our fundraising efforts provide services to disadvantaged youth in our community. People attend and support our tournament year after year because it's for a good cause and because they enjoy a well-run event. I've been to Deerfield multiple times for a wedding, holiday dinners, and brunch. The setting is very pretty and the facility is attractive. That alone might be enough for some to consider this as a viable option. The food is average and the service has been acceptable but not extremely attentive. If you or anyone in your party is a vegetarian or vegan the holiday meals and brunch are probably not worth the price. Also try not to book the last seating on holidays as food options may be more limited. Overall for buffet dining on the holidays this place is a decent option but don't expect the quality food you would get in a fine dining restaurant. read more

We were here for a friend's wedding, and we had a fun time! Great food - hors d'oeuvres, meal, and dessert - and they offered an Indian meal as well, which was quite unique! I took my family here for a Valentine's Day brunch. We made reservations well in advance and it seems like that is something everyone should do, especially on holidays. We were seated promptly at our reservation time and brought to a nice table with plenty of space between us an others. Each table has two servers which sounded great considering how many people were in there. The servers told us what was at each station, took our drink orders and we were off. The selections were great. There is a bit of everything to choose from. Belgian waffles with lots of toppings, seafood, made-to-order omelettes, carved beef tenderloin and rack of lamb, the usual breakfast fare and some more "dinner-like" foods. For the most part, everything was great. The rack of lamb was some of the best I've had. Most of the other items were up to par and as expected. Now there were quite a few problems and here's where stars start to drop. 1. They have a smoked salmon area with several types (lox, cherry wood, regular). There were the usual brunch accompaniments of bagels, tomatoes, onions, etc. I grabbed a bagel to start loading it up. It was already cut in half and solid as a rock. As in, this was probably from two weeks ago solid. The salmons were all very good though. 2. There is a dedicated kids station, which is great! However, kids eat more than chicken fingers and french fries and sugary cereals. It would have been nice if they tried a little harder here. Maybe a decorate your own pancake station or some healthy options there. Granted there is a table with fruit, but it should be front and center here. 3. The worst offense with the food is the eggs benedict. Each adult can order one made to order. There is the traditional option and a version of veggies. I ordered one to get the full experience. If you don't know, the egg is supposed to be poached and run down over the muffin and bacon when you cut into it. Instead, mine was cooked so long it was hard boiled. I showed it to the waiter and he had no clue that it wasn't cooked properly after I showed it to him. 4. The service was actually pretty subpar. For having two servers plates stacked up on our table and my coffee cup sat empty for 20 minutes. Aside from getting me my drink and clearing the table, there's really no reason for them to be anywhere but checking on me. Overall the food was good and we enjoyed the majority of it. For $90 for two people (after tip) I expect a heck of a lot more than that. read more

Pro: Great event venue! My brother and sister-in-law just got married at this establishment; I offer that they chose wisely in enlisting Deerfield's services. Our "experience coordinator", the amicable and resourceful David, was able to make magic happen. He fielded any and all requests, from "Hey, do you have a specific brand of bourbon?" (comes back with a round of it 8 minutes later), to "Hey, a guest just lost a tooth! Can you help?" (comes back with denture/cap fixing kit 12 minutes later). Also, the quaint feel of the facility gives a certain feel that makes an emotional event even warmer. Con: None. Bottom Line: Delawarians, give this place a look-over for your upcoming nuptials! I couldn't have asked for a more perfect venue for my wedding! From start to finish, Angela was so helpful and responsive to all our questions. Deerfield allows for so many customizations to ensure your wedding day is exactly how you want to. They truly do their best to make it a stress free event, whether it's helping set up all your items, coordinating with your vendors, and managing the entire event. David and his team did an amazing job supervising the rehearsal dinner, ceremony, cocktail hour, and the reception. They truly make sure everything goes off without a hitch! They are also extremely patient with you- I didn't decide until 11 am the morning of my wedding that I wanted it to be outside by the gazebo opposed to inside! We had our daughter's wedding at Deerfield and we could not have been more happy with the whole experience. Jeff Robinson, Michael Lucas, and Alex Lento were simply awesome. Jeff has put together a top notch team. From the beginning Alex was there to answer all of our questions and make suggestions. She was amazing. And Michael was there all night long making sure everything went smoothly. Everyone from the bartender, to the wait staff were very accommodating throughout the evening. I really enjoy the golf course. Holes 5-9 are very challenging. Great exercise to walk. The driving range leaves a lot to be desired. Not really where you'd want to go to really iron out your game as the range isn't terrific. The course is good. I like it. Competitively priced. read more

I played this golf course for the first time in a couple years yesterday, it makes me wish that I lived closer to Delaware. The course was in great shape for this time of the year. The falling leaves definitely made finding balls difficult, but even so, the pace of play remained at about 4 1/2 hours (it was also a Sunday during football season). Just a word of caution. Make sure to bring someone with you who has played the course before, pick up a yardage book at the pro shop or download the course's gps app, as there are multiple blind shots to greens and fairways. The course is also vertically and horizontally pitched. Almost every shot you take will be uphill, downhill, or with the ball below or above your feet. It's a challenging course that is definitely worth checking out. We also stopped into the restaurant after our round. The buffalo chicken mac and cheese was an unexpected surprise on the menu. It was delicious. Definitely not your typical bar food though. The menu offers some great options for burgers and sandwiches as well. Definitely will be back next season. read more

Easter brunch Ten of us were so looking forward to this. For me I was especially looking forward to the raw bar. What a disappointment. The crabcakes were absolutely terrible. They were unrecognizable as a crabcake. The steamed clams were not littleneck clams. Probably some kind of Chinese variety. They were lousy. The shrimp looked beautiful. But every other one was mush The crab legs were very small and served ice cold. Even the shucked oysters were not edible. For the most part, the rest of the buffet was pretty typical. The only standout was the rack of lamb. Everyone raved about that. $55 a person for the quality of the food on this buffet was way too much. The servers, and staff were phenomenal. Everyone was so friendly and attentive. Can't say enough for them. And the room itself is really beautiful. But we all agreed, that we would not be coming back. read more

They always had shrimp and smoked salmon but not this year. There were also no salads or fruit. This is one of my favorite spots to go for happy hour when it's nice outside. The patio view is beautiful and their food and drink specials are excellent. I took my dad here for Father's Day and we had lunch after hitting a few balls at the range. It was such a good time! I've also played golf here and I can say that the entire course is excellent. This is our 3rd year here for Easter and I have never really been impressed but my Mom insists on going. I won't get into the past years because they were 3 to 4 stars and the price was less according to her but this year was a total mess. I never got a refill, never got cracked pepper for the caesar salad even when I asked. There was no steamed/broiled/baked fish of any kind just a pan of fried fish and some smoked salmon that tasted 'off' and they never replenished the chopped red onions and capers while I was there. The shrimp was very bland and the snow crab legs were sparse and the melted butter was about 1" high in the pot and barely melted and again never got replenished while I was there. The steamship round was cut too thick and tough and the lamb chops were not good at all, tasted like they were cooked earlier and reheated. Some good things from what other people told me were the breakfast items and I had the crab cakes and creamed chipped beef that were pretty good. I was unable to find tarter sauce anywhere and the cocktail sauce was never replenished. Overall it looked like the last hour of a standard buffet with the difference being this was at $56 per person. I think there was about 20% less food this year. As an after thought, if you went there for breakfast and deserts you most likely would be in heaven if you don't mind that price. read more

We went to this establishment for Mother's Day Brunch. The environment was gorgeous, and looked very fancy. However, the food was not. We paid $64 dollars a person for a breakfast buffet, small salad area, small seafood area, small meat area, and small dessert area. All of the items were made very cheaply. For example, the crab cakes were mainly filler with very little meat. The meats were not expensive cuts. For $64 dollars I would have expected a bit more attention to what was being offered. In addition, the drinking glasses were very small, and the servers only came back to refill them 1x. I would guess that the glasses hold maybe 6 - 8 oz. Unfortunately, we will not be back. I would rather go to a very nice restaurant, and get a quality meal for my money then to pay this outrageous price for low quality food. read more

Deerfield, I am very disappointed with how you handled the luncheon after my grandmother's funeral recently. I was also disheartened by the way your staff interacted with my mother who has been going through a rough time as it is. My family just lost a loved one and your staff did not appear empathic at all. In fact, I feel that you took advantage of grieving people to make more money. You charged extra for several hundreds of dollars of alcohol without informing those who were paying for it in advance. The bartender disappeared several times, and the few staff you had there to help us had poor attitudes. Oh and you spelled my dead grandmother's name wrong on NOT ONE BUT TWO, YES TWO, SIGNS intended to direct guests to the right room. Then, after our exhausted family was trying to pay so we could leave, we had to wait nearly 30 minutes for someone to give us a receipt so we could pay and go home. If anyone there has ever had a death in the family, you should know how exhausting it is to make all the funeral arrangements, and to make us wait so long to pay only to return with a receipt that was hundreds of dollars more than you led us to believe it would be is just cruel. I'd also like to add that the week leading up to my grandmother's death was very emotionally and physically draining, so your behavior only added insult to injury. I'd hoped to one day get married at Deerfield, especially because of how beautiful every wedding I have attended there has been. Now, I would prefer to share sentimental moments in my life with individuals who are more considerate and compassionate. The food was good. Your facility is pretty. We went to a wedding here. This is a public golf and tennis club, not sure about the green fees. The place used to be owned by MBNA (as an executive/management retreat), then after BOA bought MBNA, it was sold to the public. The facilities are really nice. Clean, beautiful grounds, and nice buildings. I bought a couple of drinks from the bar while waiting during the rehearsal and I found the staff to be pretty friendly and accommodating. I would recommend it for a wedding or event. The wedding was great and everything seemed to run on time and as expected. read more

We enjoyed our Sunday Brunch while there. It is pricey but the selection is wide ranging. I made sure not to eat too much to allow myself to visit each and every table. Between the lamb, steak, salads, breakfast items, omlette stations, seafood, pastries and deserts, we got our fill for sure. The service was good and our waiter did a good job. He removed my plates promptly each time I got up to get more food. My kids said he did great for me but they always came back to dirty plates on the table. That's ok cause their young and my wife and I are paying! For two adults, 3 kids between 11-16 and two memosa's bill was about $180 with tip. We had our wedding here Saturday night 11/22. All I can say is WOW. Everything was perfect. We worked with Emily and David and what an amazing team they were. Emily planned every detail with us leading up to the event. David was there with us that evening from start to finish. He made sure everything went off according to plan. He treated us so well, it was like he was a member of our family. The venue was beautiful. The food was amazing. I had multiple people come up to me that evening and the days after telling me how good the filet was. I would highly recommend Deerfield to anyone looking for a wedding venue. read more

On the day of the celebration (June 21) the fountain was not working and none of the garden pots had flowers in them. My husband and I took a picture by the fountain because we wanted something beautiful and romantic to remember the day, and they totally blew it. The pictures speak volumes. Also, another piece of advice if you choose this place is not to get the butler-served appetizers. Your guests will go hungry because they just don't bring the appetizers out fast enough. Very nice locale for an event. I have attended two corporate events, a bridal shower, and a baby shower here, and each time service and food were consistent. Location is easy to find and convenient to New Castle County attendees, with almost no traffic. Parking is not difficult but a little challenging if you don't travel down a lane with the markers in your direction, and it is a bit clustered. Not many servers, but the ones who were there were quite friendly and accommodating. They pleasantly answered each request, and quickly worked. Those sitting at the back tables did not have to wait long either, even though there never seem to be many servers at any event. Also, condiment trays, cream, and sugar were kept filled, and we never had to request that someone bring items to our table. Food was just okay, nothing special, but nothing inedible, either. I have had a range from the most expensive to the least, and all of it tasted fine. They don't attempt to create anything that they feel they can't, it seems, and I'd rather have one of these than a hundred places that make a mess of a complicated dish. I don't know how they are with pricing as I was a guest, but I'm guessing they would be right in the middle. Overall, I'd recommend this setting if you want a hassle-free event for your guests, that is not elaborate, with pleasant customer service. read more

We really enjoy this restaurant, so I have to give them 5 stars for the food, I'm only writing a review because we were there last night and we noticed that the host is a new young guy.He was learning his job, he was very nice and kind and did an excellent job while we were there. My problem were a few experienced waitresses, they were very mean to him. There was specifically one lady that created a very hostile environment around this young guy. At one point, she got very close to him and whispered something to his ear and the poor guy, just grab his face. I really wanted to say something to the manager because the table next to our also noticed it. The waitresses with experience should be mentors. They forgot that they also started without any knowledge. The restaurant could have the best cooks, the best food and the best service but if a customer see what we saw last night, it could curb the appetite to a different place. My son just started working in a restaurant and he's very happy because the managers and waitresses helped him until he learned to do a good job, they are good coworkers. I hope I don't see this again at Deerfield, it would be a shame. read more

We have our annual work party here. The appetizers were cheese and crackers. The dinner was buffet with salad, rolls, mushroom soup, chicken, mashed potatoes, mushroom ravioli, and filet. I went to a Sunday brunch buffet with my family to celebrate my sister's birthday; she chose it because she had seen it advertised as the best brunch in Delaware. It was pretty damn good. There was an omelette/waffle/carving station with great belgian waffles. They were sort of vanilla flavored and served with all kinds of toppings. There was also a whole smoked fish and seafood bar, and I sampled mackerel, smoked salmon, some salmon pinwheels, and some lox on a bagel with cream cheese and capers. The missing star is because I walked around to every table at the place looking for a slice of tomato for that bagel and could not find one.(And because the spoon in our sugar bowl was crusty - the place was spotless otherwise.) There were all kinds of other things to eat, eggs both scrambled and benedict, an array of pastries, all your standard breakfast meats, crab cakes, pastas, chicken, fish, fruits and vegetables, and a dessert table I wasn't interested in at all but my family loved it. I think this would be a great place for familes, I think the adult brunch was about $25 and every adult can bring a child for free. They even had a kids table with cereals, mac and cheese, chicken nuggets, sliders and french fries. The staff was attentive and the grounds were beautiful. Although I try to limit my buffet eating to just once a year or so, I would be happy to come back here sometime soon. read more
