Do not use this company! Before I say anything I have requested in writing and voice-mail at least 20 times to talk to the owner and I get nothing. I'm specifically here to try to reach the owner. So many problems I dont know where to start. How about here... Dinorah is very challenging to work with. How she's still employed is beyond me. When I email her and cc my husband, she only responds to my husband. She has been the worst part of this not so great experience. Someone came out to give us a quote. We accepted and never got to talk to that person again. Dinorah had never been to our house but she's the only person we could communicate with. There wasn't an on-site project manager at any point. 1 or 2 people showed up for this or that and when I had questions, told me to call the office. Our project has been complete for close to a year, and we have been having issues with the pebble tech and we can't get them to call us back or come back out to look. At the end of our project, no one called or came out to see the finished project. They now claim that we still owe them $250...again, project has been done for close to a year and until we reached out to them with an issue they never asked us for more money. Dinorah says they'll do nothing about the issue and the warranty doesn't kick in until we pay. We don't actually owe them that money, but that's besides the point right now. I wish I had better things to say about Skinner Swim Pool Plastering. Especially since I am a Senior, I do not and did not want any problems. The owner KYLE SKINNER came to the site in 2021 & HAS NEVER returned. The Skinner Contract guaranteed the preparation & plastering for 15 years. The price was $20,000.+ included new pool equipment. Extra costs were demolishing the plaster by Kyle's colleague, who also demolished the pool deck, for $4,500. Then I had to hire another firm to provide a new pool deck. After the plaster drying period passed, Skinner said I had to hire a firm to do the pool "startup." That pool company continues to clean the pool weekly. 1. The new Skimmer/weir never worked properly. I called, emailed, etc.: it still does not function. There are a pile of leaves at the deep end of the pool almost always. 2. Even worse, the Skinner Plastering job has been deteriorating, both in the deep end & on the pool entry steps. I wrote Kyle, asking for the contract guarantee to be honored, with a firm date to redo the prep & plastering. 3. SKINNER & Kyle have not replied . 4. I relied on Skinner & Kyle's expertise to provide a satisfactory project. 5. I wish to resolve this amicably, but if SKINNER does not respond soon, legal action to cover my financial losses will be necessary. read more

March 2013 Update In conclusion, Brian did try and help me slightly on costs with other parts of the job (plumbing, concrete removal, etc.) but the coping was non-negotiable in Brian's eyes. The net-net, I had to replace my deck to match the slope of the new coping. It looks fabulous now. But it cost me an extra $12k for the new deck. Chalk it up to mis-communication! :( At the end of the day, I am 120% satisfied with every other aspect of the pool. Brian dialed the quartz color in beautifully, the new plumbing flows soo much better than the old plumbing, and I continue to get compliments on the Oceanside glass tile and new concrete deck. My advice to any prospective pool remodeler; 1) know that you will spend more than the quote you're given, 2) ask for everything in writing, 3) ask that your contractor be there on the major construction days (coping, plastering, tile set, etc.), and 4) consult a pool designer for help if you can afford to as it will differ some stress. Brian Skinner refuses to repair it, despite his crew communicating one thing (1/8 of an inch slope) and doing another (1/2 and inch slope). Not to mention that it's at twice the slope of the general "rule of thumb" (1/4 inch per foot). This slope has the added benefit of providing multiple trip hazards, not a good combination for my children or their grandparents. As other pool contractors have said to me, their reputation is worth more than the price to fix this mistake. Though it doesn't seem like that's the same feeling Skinner has. In defense of this company, their work was done on a second home so I wasn't there for a lot of it. But I also felt that, like hiring a contractor, they should be overseeing the job and no one did. Over the phone, someone informed me that different subcontractors would be showing up and that it was time for me to pay, but there was never a contractor checking on the work of any sub. So, at the end, when my pool wasn't holding water, I was worried about how they'd figure this out. Fortunately, they had a capable worker who did, and the problem was solved, but not until after I wasted a lot of my time and expensive So Cal water. Also, my fault again, I didn't read the contract carefully: they don't provide the start-up. That was up to me to do or find someone to do. The start-up for the pool as the water is added is important. I had to send the plaster guys home on Saturday because I wasn't prepared for the start-up and had to wait until my pool guy was available. read more

I had Skinner Plastering come and give me a free quote to take out my fiberglass pool and plaster it with new tile. I have a very large pool and knew the job was going to be tough and expensive. To my pleasant surprise, it was a very fair price (under $9000) to do the job and their price beat out the other two competitors by having a lower price of at minimum of $3000! After 1 year my pool started to discolor. My pool man kept telling me something was going wrong with the pool, I should call the company that replastered the pool. Kyle came out, after serveral calls to Isis. At first glance, Kyle stated he didn't know what was going on with the pool. Then he stated he'd just had this problem with another pool. He also stated I could have it acid washed, and oh by the way, don't think about sueing us. He went and got a copy of the contact and showed me where they are not responsible if this happens. I would HIGHLY recommend to only use a company who does the plastering and the startup. What I have found, is finger pointing between the plaster and the pool guy. By the way, Skinner Pools never offered me anything until I posted my review online and when I accepted their offer, I didn't get a reply. I surely don't like spending time doing this and I can't say that I know for sure whether it was the plaster or pool person, but what I can say is that other companies do the plaster and the startup and I will never go with anything who only does one part of the job. Our pool is 35 years old and has never been acid washed or replastered. It wasn't pretty, felt like concrete and had suspicious cracks. I went through 6-7 companies before seeing one of Skinner's trucks on the road. They were driving well, were courteous to other drivers and the truck was well organized and clean... and in our area. I had been on the cusp of giving up finding a company that knew what they were talking about, weren't trying to force an immediate sale, weren't refusing to write a contract or at most willing to scribble cryptic notes and numbers on a piece of paper. The prices of the estimates varied widely and were always more than their "ad" said it would be. Amazingly, Skinner was willing to come give an estimate even though I was not going to be home that day. A real, official estimate/contract arrived in the mail within days. I couldn't believe it. The prices were lower than any of the other companies. I had to wait several months for financing and when I called back they honored the original bid. I wasn't sure about colors and tiles. Izzy invited me to the store to surf through choices. Next I wasn't sure whether I needed new coping or not. Bret came to the office to meet me to look at photos and discuss options. Following the removal of the plaster we were uncertain whether some of the cracks were large enough to require repair. Bret was onsite right away to evaluate and provide an estimate. Each activity was done by a separate team that seemed to specialize in that part of the project. Everything ran like clockwork in spite of rain and repairs. Izzy kept the project going and made sure my paperwork always matched our discussions and my decisions. The plastering itself was well organized and orchestrated by Kyle. I couldn't help watching as they seemingly effortlessly transformed the scarred hole into an awesome pool. I had Skinner plaster my pool and could not be happier with the results! Really beautiful job and very helpful and friendly people. The guys that did the work were friendly, on time and did a great job of cleaning up after themselves each day. There was no trash or remnants of the old plaster/pool left for me to clean up at any point in the process. Izzy, the woman that answers runs the office was very patient with me as I grilled her about tile and all of the possible options. She just remained friendly even though I was having a hard time deciding. They did the job quickly with no delays. I am writing because I had Kyle come out to give me a bid on re-plastering and changing my pool a bit. He said I would have the bid within a few days and could begin work within a couple of weeks. 2 weeks and 2 phone calls (from me) later, they call me back saying that they have no such bid. After searching they write me and say that they are not available to do my pool.... VERY POOR business practice!!!! I would not recommend having this company come out and waste your time. There are plenty of other companies out there. We live in Southern California after all... pool country. They didn't even bother contacting me to say that they would not be able to do the pool. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY We had our pool replastered and retiled about a year ago. When we met with one of the owners, Bret, he seemed like he knew what he was doing and said he was on site "frequently" which is one of the reasons we chose Skinner. After we signed with them, Bret's work was done. I think he came one time during the work and that's it. He has never seen the pool finished. He is impossible to reach. He refuses to call back and is not helpful in any way. The work was delayed for a million reasons. No one ever called to let us know. People just didn't show up. Most of the people who did show were nice and did a good job but the communication with Skinner was horrible. They billed for things before the work was ever completed and sent on line bills and well. It is all about money for them. What caused me to write the review was that we had some problems with the cement in our backyard (Not Skinner's work). We wanted them to replace some decoseal that we were planning to pay for. We called Skinner, my contractor called Skinner and Bret refused to call back. Izzy who does the scheduling said she gave the message to Bret. Several weeks with no call back. Finally Izzy just scheduled the person. It took 15 minutes to do and cost $300.00. These people are absolutely crazy. I don't know how they stay in business. Do yourself a favor and don't even start up with them. It's not worth it. There are plenty of other people who can do the job just as well. read more

I had Skinner Pool replaster my pool. The white plaster was already discolored before the water had filled in the pool. They also plastered over the water feed line that goes in to the pool, as well as plastering the polaris fittings in the wall of the pool. They admit the plaster is not typical but there only solution was an acid wash which I am unwilling to do to a newly plastered pool. I believe they had their young sons or very inexperienced workers perform ed the job and also they used an inferior quality of plaster. My previously 20 year old plastered pool looked newer than my recently plastered pool. I have pictures of my horrible plaster job. I requested to have my pool replastered and they were unwilling to remedy the situation or refund me my money so I can get it redone by a reputable company. He was informative, through and never made me feel like he was "selling me." My tired old pool is now revived and looks fantastic. Love them and would recommend them to anyone. Brian from Skinner Pools left a message for my husband, Mike, stating we must have gotten lost in the shuffle. I seriously doubt that because when I called them, I left my name for contact, (Terrie). I'm assuming he read this Yelp review before he called or how would he know my husband's name is Mike??? Regardless, we elected not to hire them. If they cannot respond to a customers request in a timely manner, I lack confidence in their ability to complete a job in a timely manner. Further research of this company revealed alot of negative reviews. Word of advice, talk to your receptionist and educate her on her public contact manners. My pool is 50 years old and had the original tile and plaster. Kyle came out and gave the bid. Izzy was amazing coordinating the various phases and work crews. Each crew and workman/including Leonard the plumber did excellent work. It was no easy feat coordinating things on my end as I have ridiculous work schedule and I have a new crazy 110 lb rescue dog German Shepherd that required me to be present anytime someone got within 50 feet of my home. Every phase was coordinated with me in advance. I was able to salvage the original tile and coping to save costs, and add a new LED color changing light. In short, the replaster looks great and my frumpy backyard was transformed into a pleasant piece of paradise for a very reasonable price in time to enjoy the pool for the July 4th weekend. I used Skinner and they sold me on the idea that hydro-blasting is better then stripping away all the old plaster down to the original gunite. I decided to use them since my neighbor did. they only chipped away at the old plaster and left most of it there. They then just put a think layer of a skim coat of concrete or gunite on top of it. they then showed up on a really hot day and very quickly put on the new plaster. It was a black bottom pool, and I could immediately see trawl marks. they seemed very ruched to get to a next job and there was no real supervision. After I filled the pool up, I could still easily see the trawl marks. The reason I am writing this review now, is because after about five years, I could start to see white parallel lines spaced about 1/2 inch apart all the way up and down my pool. Again I was told by skinner that this is normal and that black plaster will fade. but this was not fading it was clear white lines all the way up and down the pool. the pool plaster only declined from there. It is now eleven years later. Just after the warranty period. I drained the pool and paid for a company to try and acid wash the lines out. when the pool was drained, we could see how bad the lines really were. the company hired to acid wash the deck which has a very good reputation told me that nothing could be done because those lines were caused by chemicals leaching through the plaster from the skim coat that skinnner put on. And they said that the plaster was way too thin and was put on in a sloppy manner. I was going to try and acid wash any way since the plaster really was not that old. But, I then also noticed MANY hairline cracks all over the place. When I started tapping on certain areas with my finger knuckle, I could hear a hollow sound that indicated that the plaster was separating from the layer underneath. when I lifted up one of those areas I noticed a bunch of water under the plaster. I then opened up another area and noticed the same thing. Basically, after only 11 or 12 years, the plaster was completely shot. My original plaster lasted for over 30 years and the only reason I replaced it was because it was fading not leaking or cracked. The plaster job done by skinner only lasted about a third of that time at best, and never really looked good. When I called out three different plaster companies to give me an estimate, they all said that it is always better to go down to original gunite and the only reason not to, is to try to save money and dont not do it correctly. Which is what I heard from all the companies except from Skinner. They also looked at the thickness of the plaster and also said it was very thin and noted that it should never have been applied in 100 degree weather. Skinner also charged me $5,500 12 years ago, and I can get it done now, the correct way, for less then that. Avoid Skinner. There are much better reputable companies out there that do the Job correctly and with much more care. I really gave their method a try. But I can tell you that after 12 years their short-cut method really did not stand the test of time. It is a cheap alternative that not only cost me a lot when they did it. but will end up costing me double since I have to re plaster again after only 12 years. But this time I will be doing it the correct way. And my neighbor who had his pool done by skinner around the same time I did, also just had his pool re plastered again last year, as well after only 12 years. read more

Absolutely Amazing! Brett from Skinner Pools was the first estimate we got to re-plaster our pool. We continued to get other bids because this is an expensive thing and figured we should shop around. But as each one after the other left...my boyfriend and I would look at each other and say..."uh no way!" Brett is certainly an expert and knows his stuff. Not only was he personable he knew what he was talking about, whereas the others to follow had no answer to any of our questions nor cared to share the process let alone point out other options available to us. Then came the crew....a different crew for each different stage and every single one of them were very nice, very helpful and cleaned up after themselves. Brett and Kyle always helped us and explained things with questions we had. Izzy and Karla in the office were always friendly and helpful. Our pool is GORGEOUS! Beyond my expectations!
