Avoid the buffet, very dry, poor quality. You may not expect much for $15, but that's what Old Country Buffet and Golden Corral charge. I have had an enormous number of meals at dozens of European restaurants, and sadly this was the worst. Two members of my party declared their a la carte meals passable (a kabob that looked and tasted fried and a dry salmon). A dessert torte and jumbo eclairs were adequate. The saving grace was that cheesy and loud but cheerful live band. The crowd was an interesting bunch, mostly young to middle aged shaved-head men and their female companions, and a large parking lot full of expensive vehicles with tinted windows. Everybody was friendly and seemed to be having a good time. I would not return for the food, but I might consider going back for the ambiance. read more

Picked up a mixed grill plate for 6 earlier today. Absolutely amazing cuisine! Being of Serbian decent, I'm familiar with SFRY cuisine. Coming back to Chicago area after some time and sharing this with a large diverse group of people we all had a good dinner. Would reccomend for bonding. The plate had a good variety of grilled Balkan meats, everything was tasty and well cooked, except the cevapi. Also, I reccomend ordering a salad on the side with this dish. Absolutely the best Macedonian food in the Midwest and perhaps the whole USA . Starting get from the Shopska salad to the Kebapi pork style to the mix grill platter and the enormous kofte pleskavica which is soo delishes and finally to the best thing on the menu Palachinke. Yummy. Can't wait to come back and try the rest of the menu. I think the burek is on the list next time I come by and some of the serbian slivovica. To be honest this place isn't bad, I like the atmosphere. It's good for lunch. You just need to know what to order and what to not. Never been here for anything other then lunch so my opinion on it is not bad. I like the patio tho cause it reminds me of Miami, there's not really places like that around here with outside seating like this. Plus this place is cheap as hell hah. The platter that says 4 people is more like 5-6 people. There's so much food, if you don't like something that's on it just ask for chicken breast or something. Went with my wife on a mid Wednesday afternoon. Had a late lunch. Admittedly, the place was not too busy as it was between mealtimes, but the service was superb and quite attentive...and the waiter indulged us in explaining some authentic, serbian dishes quite well (along with recommendations upon my asking). We both had never had any Serbian ethic food before (never heard of it either)...but my meal of a combination pork and beef rolled (with spices) into small grilled like meatballs WAS THE BEST AND MOST UNUSUAL MEAL I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE! My wife's dish of similar pork/beef in a different sort of flavoring and in a large size, pancake like (in size presentation was ALSO superbly cooked and uniquely tasty! And we're both 61 years old...so that says something! I have had all sorts of cuisines in my life - from New York City to San Franciso. But if you want a unique tasting, superb tasting dish -- all at a very reasonable price (each of ours was $12 - and we both took good go boxes back home to boot), THEN THIS IS THE PLACE! Skadarliya is really a Southeastern European-oriented (Balkan Peninsula) social club/sports bar/night club that tries to be a restaurant sometimes with varying degrees of success depending on how crowded it gets. If you grew up in Chicago and still identify with your family's ethnic/cultural heritage you know these kinds of places very well. The hired help are usually newcomers, friends of friends of the owners and not at all trained as wait staff. This place is by and primarily for it's particular crowd and you'll hear a mix of different Southeastern Europen langages which is kind of cool. So, if you come here with standard American fare service and quality expectations you're likely to be disapointed. If you set "Check Please" (Chicago-based restaurant rating show) mind-set expectations aside, you'll enjoy the eclectic 'adventure'. We came on a Sunday on an invitation. Parking can be tough. You may have to park in the neighborhood across the street. Upon arrival our party organizer told us the restaurant marked us as "no shows" and gave our table away because they recorded the arrival time for an hour earlier. They were checking if they would seat us. We got a large booth which was a little awkward but we were not going to let that deter from the occasion. The place was jammed to the gills for a Balkan Brunch. We ordered a la carte which in retrospect was a mistake but much more interesting. Besides, the term "Brunch" is a generous interpretation of the small offering as it is actually the "unch" part with a lot of spiced meats, as tasty as they are, it is not at all a "Brunch" and especially not at $20 a pop. Nevertheless, all of the staff speak English moderately well and this can cause some confusion and a surprise in what comes out of the kitchen but chances are it will be pretty good. However, your orders may not come out together or in what you might consider standard order. One person in our party got her dinner salad and feta cheese plate within a few minutes, another person received their entree a few minutes later. The rest of us waited another half hour. My "Classic Burger" was completely cold so I asked if they could please heat it. It came back almost 20 minutes later after reminding the well meaning but in-over-their-head wait person. They promtly popped it in the microwave, pickle spears and all, and I got piping hot pickles on the side but I have to admit the burger was decent and the fries nicely done despite being cooked then microwaved. There is also some creative interpretation of sandwich ingredients (See pic of Chicken Sandwich). The bacon originally came out in a strip along side the sandwich. The customer asked if they could please put the bacon on the sandwich as advertised and they promptly took the plated piece and broke it into pieces on to the sandwich-- not much finesse but moderately effective if not horrifyingly entertaining. Drink selection and prices are on the higher end for completelely standard stuff and they do nickel-n-dime you on small things like refills on your coffee which they push as if it were a breakfast place. In fairness to the server, she was basically covering almost the whole place while "management" focused on the bar and European football matches (they do get some great games though). Case in point, don't come wound too tight. If you're wired that way, that's cool too, just avoid this place. Nevertheless, their statement in Time Out Mag sums it up: "Welcome to Skadarliya. In our restaurant we are striving to bring you the flavor and variety of the Balkan cuisine, the cuisine so familiar yet so unique, and just when you think you tried just about everything, we will surprise you with something new. Let's start off with the multitude of reasons for my rating, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. I'm not sure how this place has received so many 5 star reviews because half of them point out reasons why they should be lower. I've been there both just to eat and to see live music, this is going to be a review of both experiences. For starters I am Serbian but was born in America, but I have been eating this food since I was a child and have been to Serbia numerous times. I know what the food is supposed to be. Let's start with the name, it is a play on Skadarlija, the famous street in Belgrade that is known for cafes and live music. Try and Google Skadarlija and their name would be buried, I think this was smart on their part if they want to have a more universal appeal to cultures other than Serbs. From the way they've renovated the building (which if fantastic) to their curb appeal they knocked it out of the park as far as Serbian restaurants go in Chicago. It's a much more modern feel than their namesake, but it does tell you what they're about. Food and music. Looking at their website it seems to be they are trying to cater to a broader crowd that just Serbs. I'm saying this because the whole thing is in English. For the most part it's pretty well done. That said, with them being new and having music every weekend, one would think they would keep the events page updated with who was going to be there and when. There is a couple of other places to find this information out, but it definitely isn't their website. Now lets move on to the food. My niece was coming to town and wanted to go eat Serbian food. At this point I gave her the option, we can go to my trusty spot right down the street from Skadarliya, Zupa or we can try the new place. It was convenient since it was a Friday night and I have friends that are musicians that were playing there that night. We arrived about an hour and a half before the music was supposed to start. The place was pretty much still empty, there was one table that was pretty lively, Veljko Paunovic the coach for the Chicago Fire was there with a group. Other than that not many people. When we walked in and said we wanted to eat the response was not what I was expecting. We don't have any tables, as in they are all reserved for the music later. While I can understand that I explained that we just wanted to eat and would be happy to give up the table when we were done. We were seated and then it was time to peruse the menu. I was impressed by the variety and prices of the menu. The selection is there and the prices are very reasonable for food. When it comes to Serbian food like any other cuisine there is some differences into how it's prepared based on where the person cooking it grew up. The seasoning or the meat make up of the cevapcici can vary if someone grew up in Belgrade or Kraljevo as an example. Cooking it well should not vary. So I ordered the "Montenegro Schnitzel" or Crnogorska Uvijac. It is a pork filet that is stuffed with cheese and the wrapped in bacon. I regularly order this at Zupa and have nicknamed it the Crnogorska Ubijac, which translates to the Montenegrin Killer for what it probably does to my cholesterol, but hey it's the weekend who cares. What came on the plate was two of the rolls with a side of french fries and two spreads, kajmak (which is butter, cream cheese and sour cream mixed together) and a spicy garlic cheese spread that I can never remember the name of. I guess french fries are the easy way to include potatoes with the meal, but my baba (grandmother) never made french fries with any Serbian meal. It was always homefries or potato salad. Regardless they weren't salted (which is a surprise from a Serbian place) and very bland. The meat was cooked through and wasn't overdone, but was overly dry. Thank god for the melted cheese to give it some moisture or I probably wouldn't have ate it. My niece had the pljeskavica (basically a Serbian style hamburger) this is probably what I should have ordered, but it still feel through. The same fries that I had came with it, we won't relive that. The pljeskavica took up half the plate, that is to be expected. However the biggest disappointment is with pljeskavica comes lepinje. Lepinje is a Serbian style flat bread that goes hand in hand with Pljeskavica. The was nowhere to be found. What came with it was a basket of sliced italian bread that probably came from Jewel down the street. This was my only time I've ate here, and unless something dramatically changes I'll continue to eat at Zupa down the street or Balkan Taste in Downers Grove. Balkan Taste is unique in that the owner is actually a Cordon Bleu trained chef that puts his spin on Serbian food. It isn't traditional, but that's the charm. I'd give my review of the bar, but don't have enough space left, but will be brief. It's way overpriced ($15 for vodka tonic) and don't even try for a cocktail read more

I have been here four times since they opened. I've tried to let them get over the startup phase. As of now the menus are frayed. But that's not too important because they rarely have what I order from the menu available anyway. Also the cute perky waitresses naïveté started out as kind of delightful. Unfortunately like a child suffering arrested development the servers have been stuck in their own personal Ground Hog Day where everyday they start is as of it's their first day and repeat into infinity. For example, Forget about ordering a drink though they have a full bar. "I'd like a screwdriver please." "What is screwdriver?" "It's a mixed drink made from orange juice and vodka." "I'm sorry, we don't make mixed drinks." "Could you get me a glass of orange juice and a shot of vodka?" "Of course, what kind vodka you like?" At which point my head is only made to feel better by slamming it on the table and hoping to be Tasered back into the real world. The food is lovingly prepared in advance. Chilled to await an order, then warmed for serving to the point that even Velveeta cheese wouldn't melt from the two seconds it gets being waved under a serving lamp. I don't rate one star lightly. In fact my typical rating is 5. I suspect this is a place that caters to Serbian nationals and seats others as a courtesy. After four tries I have to say I won't be back absent some compelling information that the fundamentals of the restaurant biz have been mastered. read more

I have been there many times since they have opened. I am Serbian and this is pretty darn good for authentic Serbian food. Their menu is a little weird in the fact that they do not have all the items all the time. I suppose it has to do with the amount of business they expect on certain days. Like sarma, they only have it on Friday and Saturday. This is understandable as it's a labor intensive meal to make. Everything that I have had is fresh. There is no large container of salad sitting waiting to be dished on a plate. That's just not Serb mentality. When you order a salad the slice and dice and put it on a plate. The prices are reasonable especially based on the portion size. I've looked through the reviews and there ere a few about staff inattentiveness but that's not really an issue for me. First of all most of the staff are recent immigrants so some of that could be language barrier. The drinks are reasonably priced. They have free valet parking. I'm vegetarian so ordered a fish soup they bring me pork soup then grilled fish with mash potato and vegetables they bring me with french fries! Then no forks! I'm not that picky! I ate a little bit and rest i was thinking to take to go. So there was leftover almost whole plate(french fries,vegetables and grilled fish untouched) The waitress took my plate to the kitchen and then come back with the box in the plastic bag. We went for the brunch. We thought the food was very good. Not being Serbian, I cannot comment on its authenticity. But you had a lot of choices. My only complaint is that they need signs on the food to tell what you're eating. I'd like to go back and have full meals, but I have no idea what it was. Be aware that although the restaurant opens at 11:00, the brunch doesn't start until noon. I'm Macedonian who lives in California, and good Balkan food is a rare occasion for me. I've been to Chicago 4 times so far and have tried all the Balkan restaurants in the area.Skadarliya, with no doubt has the best customer service and the best quality of Balkan food that I've tried so far. Their breakfast cheese bread (Burek) was good as back home on the Balkans, and their stews, soups, and quality of meat was super tasty. This place has a very European feel, although it sits on Ogden Avenue across from the colony motel in Brookfield. The bread and cheese spread was amazing. However, we order the mixed dish for 2 people, and it was not for American taste buds. There was so much meat and sausages of unknown origin on top of French fries with some onions and lettuce and tomatoes on the side. I now know why the onions were there...the meat was incredibly gamey. I'm sure if you're Serbian and grew up on this, it's incredible...but it tasted so strong of recently hunted game, that I wondered if I was eating a squirrel and raccoon from the alleys of brookfield or Bemis woods. The taste would not leave my body for hours. So just a heads up, if you weren't born and raised on food like this, this will be a not so pleasant experience. We get seated. She says "I'll give you two menus for now. What would you like to drink?" We tell her we would like to look at the drink menu before ordering. She walks away. She comes back 10 minutes later. We order our drinks. She walks away. She comes back 10 minutes later with our drinks, two at a time. She doesn't have a tray and no one is helping her. Someone from our table says we would like to order some appetizers. She takes the order and leaves. Fine. We get one appetizer. We eat it. 15 minutes late we get two more appetizers. We eat them. She comes back after the plates are removed to see if we want refills on our water.. "Can we order?" we ask. "Oh you want to order?" Uhm yes... so we do. Food comes out reasonably quickly. I come here somewhat often and really enjoy this place. The food is top notch (I'm from the Balkans, so I grew up with this food) and VERY reasonably priced compared to some of the other European spots out there. The service is very friendly and fun, the drinks are strong and the atmosphere is casual during the day, but pleasantly dressy during weekend nights.
