Extremely Disappointing Experience with Billing and Management…read moreOur stay at The Hythe Vail ended with a very disappointing and concerning experience. After we had already checked out, the hotel added a $181.16 in-room dining charge to our folio that we did not make, receive, or authorize. Naturally, we contacted the hotel to ask for an explanation and to have the charge investigated. What was most disappointing was the response from management. I called the hotel at approximately 7:30 AM to address the issue and was told that the Manager was too busy to speak with me and that they are busy with customers ( we are no longer customers we were customers last weekend). Also the rep Katharine and I believe her name Debby were extremely rude, Katharine was snapping at me to get confirmation number faster, and both hung up on me twice. Despite explaining that I was disputing a charge I had never authorized, I was not given the opportunity to speak with management. I was also extremely disappointed to subsequently be characterized as being "rude" simply because I was expressing disbelief and frustration over being charged $181.16 for something we did not order. I have since opened a formal case with Marriott Bonvoy as we are member and have requested documentation from the hotel showing when the room-service order was placed, what was ordered, how it was authorized, and why it was added to our folio after checkout. Mistakes can happen at any hotel. What matters is how a hotel responds when a customer brings a legitimate billing dispute to its attention. In this situation, I expected accountability, communication, and an investigation. Instead, I felt dismissed, that they were too busy for me and short staffed like that is my problem. I hope the hotel takes this matter seriously and reviews its billing and management procedures so that other guests do not experience the same situation. Still to this date just received the refund and not one person reached out to me to apologize. At this point, I would strongly encourage guests to carefully review their folio after checkout and wouldn't recommend this poorly run hotel.

On the evening of July 17, we inquired about why our room was so warm. A staff member told us that, due to capacity, the hotel's system was unable to adequately cool the room. This explanation was confusing because the hallway outside our room was noticeably cool. We were offered a fan, but it simply circulated the warm air and did little to improve the comfort of the room. It wasn't until our last night, July 19, that we were provided with a portable air conditioner (swamp cooler). While it helped somewhat, it was very noisy and made it difficult to sleep. One of the things my husband looks forward to most on vacation is getting a good night's rest, and unfortunately that wasn't possible. To make matters worse, when we checked out on the morning of July 20 at approximately 5:00 a.m., my husband approached the front desk. A young woman saw him standing there but did not acknowledge him and instead walked away. She didn't return until about 5:07 a.m. to assist him. A simple greeting or acknowledgment that she would be with him shortly would have gone a long way. While the hotel itself is beautiful and has many positive qualities, the lack of a functioning air conditioner, the delayed response to the issue, and the disappointing customer service at checkout significantly impacted our overall experience.

After spending summers and winters in Vail for the better part of 20 years, it is a place that grows on you like an old friend you can't quite quit. Some times there is comfort in familiarity. It can, however, be so bubbled going in to town possesses the jarring feeling of juxtaposition - like waking from a dream on a bed of clouds to having to run blocks for the last cup of coffee at your favorite Midtown breaky booth. Rant aside the terrain is vast, even with current limited terrain, and après-ski festivities can have a warmth that keep you out of the house past the "holy hour" as I call it, lift closing at four. Après, of course, officially begins at 4:00:00:01. :) And yes, it and everything else draws you back year after year. There's something to be said for routine in a resort town, knowing exactly what you're going to get. But after near-decades of visits, Vail's habitual charm, though solid, can't always beat the polish of Aspen. While Vail is unquestionably comforting and consistent, Aspen offers something more refined: quality service pretty much 100% of the time. There's an undeniable level of attention from instructors to high-end retail staff. The experience is tailored, not transactional. In Vail, by contrast, service is oft hurried even indifferent. At worst, it can drip with envy. The t-shirt girl who ignores, the hostess offering crass commentary to a coworker about guests. Even though you know it's about someone else it's so fun to stop and ask: "What, wait. I'm a seasonal sojourner. Are you talking about me?" Talk about a master class in making a person's face go flush! Aspen, however, always seems to maintain a small-town elegance, more authentic personas, or at least better (worthy of an Oscar) acting. And, it makes all the difference. Then there's the familiar, quietly loaded question you hear most often in Vail - from attendants, gallery owners, even bartenders: "How long are you in town for?" It's not really about your itinerary; it's about your wallet. Locals and seasonal workers tend to gauge your response to place you in their hierarchy of visitors. It's an odd ritual, and it always stops them cold if you reply, "We have a home here." Suddenly, the conversation shifts. No follow-ups. No small talk. Just instant deference. In the end, Vail remains a beloved habitat, but Aspen's refinement and superior service give it undeniable edge. Still, both stand so far above other ski destinations that comparing them to lower elevation or lower design standards, kinda feels unnecessary and, at worst, unfair.

We had the AMEX upgrade deal, and our suite in the 180's was awesome. Considering we were coming in on Thanksgiving, having that awesome room was convenient since not much would be open in town. Our suite had two bathrooms, a reclining sofa (which we will be shopping for at home and was SO relaxing), a murphy bed, really comfortable main bed, a fireplace, and a big patio. Our fireplace had a problem in getting going, but Jacob came immediately and helped us out...on the holiday night. We needed some food, but were over Thanksgiving food for the day, and Amanda and Ben helped us out in Fitz's lounge in getting some mac and cheese off the shown menu. They have two heated pools. The other one had a waterfall feature, but we never really went to that one just because of convenience. We liked ours with two hot tubs of varying levels of heat, and apparently redone in the last year. The steam room was busted during our visit, but they have that and a sauna available, along with a spacious fitness facility that we never used. Their cool ceiling fans are pictured below also...very unique looking ones in each of our rooms. The parking onsite is underground, and I liked it because I didn't have to ask to get something in or out of my car through a valet person. We had an included breakfast, and it was high quality food, and even had an omelette station. The lobby had a great Christmas tree, along with a side room with a piano (which they allowed me to play at night). I love everything about this place, and it was a short walk to Vail Village and anything you needed or wanted to partake in. I highly recommend this place, and see you there next time...

I've grilled twice now at Henry's Hut: once last year during a late season blizzard and last…read moreweekend on a 50-degree blindingly sunny day. I'm not sure which was more fun. Last year, the little teepee-like warming hut was packed to the gills with big groups of friends drying off, staying warm and gathered aroung huge carved wooden chairs and tables eating feasts I had a hard time believing people could haul up in a backpack. Sandwiches, fruit, veggies, salads, chips, cookies, brownies, wine, beer, champagne...in fact one table had what looked like an entire full bar with mixers. The big grill outside - in spite of whiteout conditions and freezing cold temps - was full of burgers, brats, buffalo, elk loin, venison, shrimp, veggie skewers, etc. Everyone inside shares condiments, plates, napkins and the like. There's even a microwave. This past Saturday, the hut was empty and everyone was gathered around the grill or sitting in chairs or snow drifts soaking up the sunshine, with beers and wine plopped in the snow to chill. Henry the dog is always there looking for a pat on the head or an extra bite of snausage. The best part is seeing so many people in costume. I think some people make a day of hanging out at the Hut, and don't even ski much. You only have to take two lifts up (Vista Bahn and Mountaintop Express) to get here and you could easily take cat tracks back to the base of the Village, which explains all of the small children wearing butterfly wings who can barely toddle around. Henry's is much easier to access than the grills at Belle's Camp in Blue Sky Basin. You're at the top of three lifts so you can take runs while you leave someone to man your food on the communal grill. The front side of Vail Mountain is tough for an average/timid snowboarder like myself to navigate, full of steep black diamond runs or flat cat tracks, but hanging out with friendly people at Henry's Hut for an hour or two can absolutely make the day worthwhile. We traded swigs of whiskey for chips, pretzels for bites of aged cheese, buns for beers. I was almost able to block out that just a short time after my grillfest, I slid down the iciest part of Riva Ridge on my butt and looked like a fool.

It's clear they know how to make kids feel comfortable while also helping them build skills and confidence on the mountain. Every year we put them in atleast one lesson so they remember the basics. The entire process is also very easy to navigate, which makes a huge difference. Especially on that first day when things can feel a little hectic. From check-in to getting them settled, everything runs smoothly and takes away any stress. Another big plus is the pick-up and drop-off location. It's centrally located on the mountain, making it super convenient to get the kids where they need to be and meet up afterward without any hassle, cause some days get very busy.

What a waste of money with everything that was thrown out & no attempt was made at making this good for me. I was very disappointed with the service. PROS: Price - this condo is by far the least expensive place I've ever stayed in Vail. It is so reasonably priced that it's really hard to complain about anything. Location - this is the biggest pro of all. You are right in the middle of everything in Lionshead Village with an easy walk anywhere you want to go. I'm not sure how to classify this one, but the room and bathroom was scrupulously clean, which is always very important to me anywhere I stay. CONS: The decor is very dated and made it feel a little cheap and shabby. The sofa bed was horribly uncomfortable. It sounds silly, but there wasn't a guide for the TV channels and it wasn't on the screen itself, so if you watch TV, there will be lots of clicking around. And the things in the middle - one, there is very little parking; they have less parking than they have rooms, so beware if you are driving. We never had any issues finding a spot, but it's a little quieter in August. Finally, and I hesitate to mention this because we did not say anything to the management, but the HVAC in our room did not work. It wasn't such a big deal because the weather was very temperate and we could leave the balcony door open, but at the same time, there wasn't a screen on the sliding door, so we had some winged visitors. All in all, A-OK is probably the best way to describe the Lifthouse. I don't know if I would stay there again myself, but if someone was looking for a really reasonable room in Vail, I wouldn't hesitate to point them here with a few caveats.

After the massage, I sat by the fire and enjoyed the peace and quiet. I stayed until about 2pm enjoying all of the spa amenities. They provide fruit infused water and teas. There is also an oxygen bar available for an additional cost. They do allow children under the age of 16, with adult supervision. There were a few kids in the pool so it's not an adult only area which is the only downfall.
