We've had such a positive experience with Vail Ski & Snowboard School. We've trusted both of our kids with their instruction, and every time the instructors have been incredibly supportive, patient, and encouraging. It's clear they know how to make kids feel comfortable while also helping them build skills and confidence on the mountain. Every year we put them in atleast one lesson so they remember the basics. The entire process is also very easy to navigate, which makes a huge difference. Especially on that first day when things can feel a little hectic. From check-in to getting them settled, everything runs smoothly and takes away any stress. Another big plus is the pick-up and drop-off location. It's centrally located on the mountain, making it super convenient to get the kids where they need to be and meet up afterward without any hassle, cause some days get very busy. read more

The instructors are mostly fine and mostly competent. Our multi-generational crew skis blacks and blues. Kiddos in the mix ski whatever is best for them at that time. Period. Some instructors apparently need be reminded they are in a hired role. Their position is to be of service, to follow instruction. Their's is not the role of principal, extended family leader or guest. They are not equals in the equation, they are staff contracted. Ski in. Ski out. Buh bye. I did a level 1 beginners group lesson with Kimberly. She was extremely patient , kind and helpful with us beginners! I highly recommend getting a ski lesson if you don't know how to ski. It's best to learn all the basics and safety instructions from a professional who is there to guide you throughout the whole time. Lessons at Lionshead It's always the luck of the draw as to what type of instructor you'll get and this time, we were lucky enough to meet nice group mates and take lessons at a time when the weather was amazing. As for the location, Lionshead is great for newer skiers and the price of lessons are on par with other Vail resorts. You can purchase one day of lessons or three days of lessons for the price of two. Also, the early season promos were buy one get one free for non EPIC pass holders ($314 -375 for 2 full days of lessons, lift tix and equipment rental). Having taken lessons at other Vail resorts (Whistler Blackcomb and Wilmot), I was rather disappointed at this experience. School starts at 9:45a. Our group did not get started until 10:20a and we were the only Level 1-2 group (ski or snowboarding) to spend the ENTIRE day at the bunny hill and magic carpet. We were there so long that the guy operating the magic carpet asked me if I would try the "lift" that was less than 75 feet away, to which I responded that our instructor said we would NOT go on day 1, we could move on the next day. We pretty much had this area to ourselves. Had we not noticed that every other group of first timers/new skiers were further along and "learning" elsewhere, we would have believed that Lionshead instructors teach at an ULTRA slow pace. *********After our 10:20 start, our teacher wanted to break for lunch at 11:15. We asked to keep going until 12:15-12:30p. Two of our group mates skipped lunch to practice more. They also opted to keep practicing when our lesson ended. ********** While I'm still scratching my head as to the reason we learned so little especially in comparison to others, I was reminded that our instructor mentioned at the outset that he would encourage each of us to take at least a second day of lessons. When the five of us piped up to say we all had purchased multiple days, he could have limited the lesson knowing that we would be returning for lessons with him on day 2 and/or 3. What he didn't know was that we wanted go with someone else in hopes of a better lesson. Hahaha. ...............The only problem with going with someone new was that we were taught FAR less than other level 1-2 groups. read more

Second year in a row I've enrolled my son in ski lessons here. I do not ski, so I had to find the place which would make me feel comfortable. I highly recommend this school. Because of the location, right by the gondola. They run a really good program. The instructors are wonderful. From enrollment, assessment, rental equipment, and lunch, every aspect is great. The kids did a great job during their day long lessons but they started late because their skis were put in the wrong bin and delayed the day. I enrolled my kids in ski school. The instructor had no patience for my 7 year-old and ignored my 11 year-old. We paid $400 for lessons and basically got nothing. The instructors seem annoyed to work. The place is disorganized and is understaffed. I paid money for lessons but the rental area took so long that I missed my lessons. Clearly these folks just want everyone's money and could care less beyond that. They are annoyed with questions and have no empathy for people who haven't spent a lifetime skiing multiple times per year. Absolutely horrible. read more

We were just in Vail Jan 1-4. My 15 year old son took full day snowboarding lessons for three days with Pablo in a small group. He loved it so much we will be going back! He couldn't wait to get up and meet the group each morning even though it was cold in the single digits. They ate some amazing looking food for lunch each day too. (Send a credit card) I recommend buying the two day beginner, group lesson and then you get the third day free. His group had just five people. There is a group for 15-17 year olds. They are great about putting you with others at the same skill level and age. My son didn't want to be with a bunch of 7 year olds. Pablo was amazing! Ask for him! I've lived in Colorado for almost 10 years and I've yet to ski. I first thought to ask my ski friends to teach me, but figured to invest a $$ for a formal lesson and I'm happy I did. I made the reservation online, which was easy and painless. Walked to the ski school, got my rentals a few feet away and I was ready. I was lucky enough to only have 2 other people in my class and an instructor who was training for the day, so I pretty much had the best of both worlds. It was nice to have a formal instructor who taught use all of the basics, by the end of the day I felt pretty good about my self (well at least on the beginner slope). read more

This was my first time in any type of snowy environment so I decided to take a beginners snowboarding class. I arrived 15 minutes early thinking I could rent boots and board at the ski school. Instructor, Mike told me otherwise. Knowing I would be pressed for time, he walked with me to the rental company that I chose. He then made sure I was squared away with enough time to start class. Cheers to Mike. The class itself was instructed by Devin. Devin was very friendly, personable and knowledgeable. He taught, demonstrated and watched and listened intently as all students attempted each lesson. I had an amazing time and will definitely come back for an intermediate class. GOLDEN PEAK LOCATION: since you guys are not in Yelp. This review is for the school located at golden peak. For a first timer I was looking for a little guidance to learn the basics of skiing. Vail Sports is the only group with schools in Vail, at least that's what I was told. They have multiple locations: beavercreek, lionshead, among others. The one that was close to us was golden peak. We paid $179 for a half-day group lesson ( the group was no bigger than 6 people), $60 for the rental equipment, which included skies, poles, and boots. The helmet was not included but was available for rent for $12. The price came up to $239.00 which included a complementary lyft ticket. On December 31, 2016 my family and I came to the school to get the lessons for the first time ever! We were super excited. Unfortunately nothing was as we expected, the disorganization from the rental place was awful. We arrived at 11:00 AM, with plenty of time to get ready for the 12:45 half-day lesson. It took them 2 complete hours to get us all ready for our lesson. We ended up taking a 2 hour lesson rather than the full 3 hours that we were supposed to. Long story short I ended up cancelling the whole thing and asking for a credit to return a different day. On January 2nd we came back. The place was almost empty so we managed to start our lesson on time. It was well worth it. I hope management looks into ways to keep the staff organized. Moreover keep them all well informed of your policies as a private school and teach those who don't know costumer service skills. I love Vail, but the Ski School let me down. It's probably ok for beginners, but it's a total waste of time and money if you've skied before. Last year was the first year I had skied in 5 years. It took me a couple days to get my "snow legs" back. This year, I decided to take a lesson the first day of my trip to help polish up my technique and knock the rust off quicker. I'd hoped it would help me make more of my 4 day trip. I'm a solid "Blue" skier. "Green" slopes bore me most of the time, easier "Blacks" are doable, but challenging. I signed up and paid for a lesson. I was given instructions to meet the school at Eagle's Nest at 10:00. I was told the instructors would gauge my skills and put me in an appropriate group. I was also told that the groups averaged about six people. I arrived as instructed. I tried to talk to several instructors about my level, but none of them wanted to discuss it with me. I was told to stand along a rope with "advanced to the left beginners to the right" and decide where I belong. How the ^&*% was I supposed to know where I fall compared to all the other skiers? I ended up in an "advanced intermediate" group with 12 others. The lesson consisted entirely of the group following the instructor down beginner slopes in a single file line at a snails pace. Two thirds of the Supposedly "advanced intermediate" group were using wedge turns exclusively. I haven't relied on wedge turns since I was 12. By lunchtime we still hadn't gotten off of beginner slopes. I'm not judging my group mates, their skills are what they are, but Vail did us all a disservice by grouping skiers of all skill levels into a single group. No one had a chance to learn anything at their level. In my four hours with the group, the instructor said maybe two sentences to me (Other than frequently yelling at me to "get back in line"). The only feedback I got was to keep my hips facing more downhill. I "accidentally" lost the group at lunchtime. Looking at the "Epic Mix": In about 45 minutes of skiing before I met the group I rode up and skied down 4 lifts, in three hours with the group we rode up and skied down 3 lifts, In the 3 hours after I left the group I rode up and skied down 8 lifts. Vail charges way too much for lift tickets and classes for them to be this useless. read more

I had a fantastic experience with these guys on a half day (re)beginner lesson. My teacher was awesome, knowledgeable, and funny. Despite having 6 or 7 heads in the class, I got all the attention & guidance I needed - and I even got a report card at the end. My only regret is not getting to be on the mountain longer. The total cost was about $140 for a lift ticket + lesson. Not bad considering a half day lift ticket is $100. Definitely recommend these guys if you go to Vail! read more

Kevin (one of the private instructors) was amazing! Before I forget to mention, this is an unbiased opinion, and do not know Kevin personally, but I HIGHLY a recommend him and request him if you are taking private ski lessons in Vail, CO!!! He is very professional, courteous, patient, fun and he went above and beyond our expectations! Kevin coordinated with me a week prior our trip to Vail. He gave me a summary of what our day will be like. He even made arrangements for our lunch break and made reservations to a restaurant near by. For our ski lesson, he was so patient to our group. we had a party of 5 with h all different ski levels. Most of us are "ski virgins" , he never gave up on us and at the end of the day everyone was comfortable on skis! The next day a few of us are actually enjoying a run on the Greens! Ski is a tough sport to learn, but the community is so great and supporting. Taking a lessons from an expert like Kevin is highly recommended and is worth the money! The Vail Ski and Snowboard school is the best in the world. They only hire the best instructors. I hope Karen B went directly to a supervisor as that experience is unacceptable. I was an instructor for twenty years and have the highest level of certification possible, yet, when I went to Vail to get a job they still gave me a ONE WEEK tryout. I agree with Arwen about getting a lesson when you go. The lessons are all day and you will not only get great coaching but you will get a tour of the mountain that you couldn't get on your own. I no longer work there and have no connection with the place other than my great few years there five years ago. read more

Wow they need to get organized here. I understand it's early in the season before the TG holiday but really. $210 per day for ski school for young child with her own equipment. The wait line to check in is very long so get there at least a half hour before they tell you to arrive. No clear lines on where to go to register or if you are signed up and registered where to pay. My child has been admitted now for almost an hour and her skis still sit in the front of the building where anyone could walk off with them. I wonder when an instructor will pick them up so She can actually ski. An expensive baby sitter perhaps. Not impressed. read more

First: our instructor, Maria, was very effective and so fun!!! My 8 year old boys (first time skiers) loved skiing and were really disappointed when we headed home - largely because they said they were going to miss her! She was high energy, reassuring but matter-of-fact, and expected them to be self-sufficient. We would request her again in a heartbeat! Beware: children's rentals are NOT included in the price, which they won't tell you at the time you pay the big, fat bill for your lessons. That charge will hit your credit card several days later, without any warning or explanation. read more

The Vail Ski and Snowboard school is a great place to learn how to ski! They have great packages for single and multiple days including lift tickets and rentals. The instructors are very friendly, patient and professional and do a good job in a group lesson helping everyone ski to their ability so some people don't get bored and others don't get pushed before they are ready. The school has its own set of bunny slopes where you can learn and its not too crowded and you don't have to worry about other more experienced skiers whizzing past you. The school is right on top of Vail mountain, so you get a fabulous view while you learn how to ski. The one negative (same as Connie) is make sure that your ski boots are truly comfortable before you leave their rental shop. About half of our group, including me had boots that were too narrow, and it dampens the fun if your foot is cramping the whole time. read more

In Vail Ski School Money Rules make no mistake thinking differently. I just enquired about in what weather conditions a class would be cancelled - and the response was NEVER (with exclamation). No weather refunds in any conditions. I asked about if a Blizzard should come through - and the response was - "We keep the children safe". So you would end up paying ski school fee for you kids being at Daycare. I was advised that if I was uncomfortable I could just keep my kid home - but still pay. My inquiry was based on a weather forecast of 5F with 18MPH winds - but the (money) show must apparently go on. read more

Our boys did 2 full days of ski school out of the Lionshead location and loved it. They had incredible instructors (Mason, Victoria and Steven) and their improvement over the two days was amazing. They have taken lessons at Mammoth Mountain, which were really good, but the class sizes seemed to be much smaller here (granted it was not during the holidays, so perhaps not a fair comparison) and the instructors from day one communicated with the instructors from day two rather than the day two instructors having to assess from scratch. Their improvement over the two days was amazing and their skiing confidence improved dramatically. They both want to make this our main ski destination going forward after their experience at the ski school. Although still relatively new to skiing, one of our sons is a more advanced skier than our other son (5 days of skiing in his career so far!) and on day two he had progressed to a point where he was out on the blue runs in the bowls and doing small jumps. They also helped our other son to get from not being able to control his speed to controlling his speed and skiing more parallel moving up to a Level 4 on day 2. There is also the EpicMix app that you can log into after the lessons where they can review their skier level (1-9) and all of the lifts they went on, as well as a snapshot of what they worked on and what they need to learn to get to the next level. We left with the feeling that this is a top notch operation. read more

A broken leg, after a 6 year old girl spent a morning with Meghan at the Vail Ski School in Lionshead. Every time we went to ski school over the past 3 years (she has been skiing since age 3), they kept holding her back and placing her into level 3, year after year. This year, the teacher placed her in level 4 but was complaining that the child skied too fast. I being an expert skier, then skied with the child because she really wanted to have a few more runs before going in, and I realized, that she is an awesome little skier. She definitely had surpassed level 4 skiing. She definitely was level 5, in my opinion. She made nice turns, good speed control, skied blue runs responsibly with nice stops. I went to the ski school and told the supervisor that the child we were skiing with was an awesome little skier and that I was concerned that she was too advanced for her class. The supervisor, later apologized for being entirely unreceptive to the concern that we had for the 6 year old. The next morning, the child returned to ski school. She had the same instructor, Meghan, that she had before. It is my impression that instead of taking the small children on appropriate runs for the conditions that they just stuck to their child designated areas, despite them not being as safe as other areas on the mountain. At 11:30 that morning, last Thursday, I received a call from ski patrol saying "We have your little daughter here... she fell and is crying". We met them at the bottom of the mountain and took her to the local hospital, where she was diagnosed as having a spiral tibial fracture. I then asked her what happened. What happened was, she was skiing very slow because she was told not to ski fast. When she fell, she had a very slow twisting turn which broke her leg. An orthopedic surgeon I spoke to told me that if she was skiing faster (which was her comfort zone) her leg would not have been broken. Vail Ski School in my case and in my opinion push that being in a class too high for yourself is dangerous, but they actually fail to realize that skiing at a level too low for yourself can be dangerous too. I had a discussion with instructors from another mountains ski school. Another mountains ski school told me that it is not rare for a ski school to hold a student back and that that is actually a potentially unsafe skiing environment for that student and that it is really important that students are placed in an appropriate class for their safety. read more

I ended up having 3 instructors due to scheduling conflicts/ ability. all the instructors were very friendly and personable but from a student/learning standpoint, my favorite instructor would have to be davie. he was incredibly patient and very thorough with teaching the fundamentals. he provided great feedback and i didn't feel rushed or intimidated. i would have loved to have had him all three days! the environment is very casual and you can go at your own pace. i also loved how the lessons were at the top of the mountain instead of the bottom how it usually is! read more

Very unhappy with Vail's ski school. They sold us a pass for ski school. Then told us we also needed to buy a four day epic pass because lift tickets were not included in the pass they sold us. Come to find out they did charge us for a pass that included lift tickets. Basically they got double paid. When we tried to get our money back. They said they could not give us money back for the epic pass. Paige said they could only give us $25 per day that our kids were in ski school. We were only given $100 for something they told us to buy. The epic pass cost us about $300 per child. So for their mistake we are now out $500. Never using Vail's ski school again. read more

I took an intermediate (level 5-6) group lesson at golden peak in the end of January and it was very disappointing. To start with, I don't think our instructor should be working that day -- he had a cold and was very low on energy. Secondly, the lesson felt more like a tour around the mountain instead of an instructional lesson. He took us to some good green and blue trails all around the mountain, but there was little to no personal feedback on our skiing skills, and the instructor for the most time was in front of us leading the way, instead of observing us. He would demo a skill, and ask us to follow him; then demo another, and so on. However, there would be periods when we didn't get any demo or instructions, for example, when he went down a pretty steep blue trail, we weren't told which of the skills we should use, or any instruction for that matter, and we all felt quite discouraged. Lastly, he paid very little attention to the class, at one point, half of the class got lost because he went too fast in front, and the whole class halted for a long time. In general, I felt I could get more out of a 10-min youtube video than this expensive many-hour experience. The company also showed no customer service -- I tried to call multiple times to leave a feedback and ask for my report card (yes, I didn't even get my report back, the instructor said I would receive an email after the class which did not happen), and left my number and messages since the supervisor was always busy, but have not received any call back. read more

Adam Wasson at Lionshead was an awesome instructor for Group Beginner Adult! As a 30+ first time skier, I really did not have high hopes. I booked a full day lesson, having planned on only a half day. I'm glad I took the full day! I Alex not coordinated AT ALL and also have issues with "Left/right" Directions. I was JUST about to call it quits, when Adam took a few moments from the group to show me a few things that clicked and lead me to book two more lessons and extend my gear by five days! He's really awesome, patient and has a fantastic optimistic outlook. I'd recommend him to any first time adult skier who is apprehensive about learning the sport. He was helpful, clear , precise, encouraging, patient, and an outstanding tele and alpine teacher. I improved greatly thanks to his expertise. The Ski School once they get started is great. However, several of the staff had no idea where my grandson's teacher was or where they were to meet. Finally found someone who knew something. Very poorly trained inside staff!!!!! Also, I tried to get information on an Epic Pass ski school offer online and all the guy said to me was to go online (which was not the right price) and to look in my email trash and find the offer. He couldn't help me at all. Time to get your act together, Vail, and have informed employees who are actually part of the system, or who will find out for the customer. This is supposed to be a world class resort. We have been coming here for over 40 years and this is the most disappointing year ever, as far as employees go. read more

I had never participated in a winter sport in my life when I enrolled in the half day beginner's course. I met my instructor, Don Bissett, at the base of the mountain. He got to know us all then took us up in the gondola to the ski school. Don started with the very basics and has us all up skiing in no time. There were 6 of us in the class and we all got personal attention and feedback. We learned all the basics plus some more advanced stuff, and Don even made time to get us on the lift too to make sure we could get off and on without getting hurt. I had such a great experience and really got the basic skills I needed. When I joined my friends on the slopes the next day - all seasoned skiers and snowboarders - they were very impressed with my abilities and the skills I had learned. It was well worth the $140. read more

For a $200 lesson, I was underwhelmed. We signed up our 3-yr-old daughter for her 2nd lesson, her first being the previous week in Breckenridge, which went great. From best I can tell, the instructors were really great with her and the "skiing" aspect of the day was just as hoped. But the overall logistics of the place was very chaotic. Upon arrival, they told me my print-outs were at a different desk, and made me carry my daughter halfway around the building. They then had all parents putting all the gear on all of the kids, prior to the day starting (which seemed a little odd since they weren't going out on the snow right away). When I came to pick my daughter up, she was napping (which was good) and they brought her out still wearing her ski boots (I mean, who makes a 3-yr-old nap in ski boots?). All of her "stuff" was in a cubby out front in an entirely different location, including her change of clothes, blankie, etc which obviously were never used. But her skis were nowhere to be found. The main desk had me go outside to the ski instruction area to check, at which point the people in that location told me to go back inside and find the ski instructor. I didn't know who the ski instructor actually was, but luckily the front desk person came back with me and helped me find somebody more helpful. At any rate, I'm not sure we would go to this place again. A little kid's ski place is going to be chaotic, but I would hope that they would at least keep my kids' things together and let her nap with her boots off. Too many other mountains with much better attention to detail. read more

We took private snowboarding lessons for the first time. The meeting place was very easy to locate and it is conveniently located next to the lift ticket office. All the supervisors are in red jackets and they are always willing to help answer questions. The instructors wear blue jackets and they were all very friendly. On our first day, we had Brad as our instructor and he was just amazing. He had us up and snowboarding before lunch. You can tell he is very good with children. He was extremely patient and compassionate with my son. We added the afternoon lesson but we were unable to finish the lesson with one of us becoming sick. The school was extremely accommodating and they found us an instructor the next morning to finish out the lesson. I don't think it's their normal policy but we greatly appreciated the effort. Christine was the supervisor and she was just wonderful with us. We had Chris as our instructor the 2nd day and he was great as well. He had some different techniques and pointers to show us. You can tell he lives for the sport. If you are taking private lessons, I would wait to purchase the lift ticket with your instructor. They have a beginner's lift ticket that is much more reasonable in price for the day and it is not listed on their regular fee schedule. read more

This is a mixed review as I had two kids in school yesterday at Vail (Lionshead). One 11 y/o snowboarder and one 8 y/o skier. Both have been on the snow for years, the snowboarder had a blast with both his morning and afternoon instructors. His was a rave review of the teachers, the staff and how much fun he had. The skier was a different story. 2 years ago he was at winter park and they had him all over the mountain on the second day of school and in the last two years with us he can do all blue or green terrain. He still has much technique to learn (thus school) but his morning teacher had him on the magic carpet for the entire session. He was upset when we picked him up for lunch, claiming how terrible it was. When I dropped him back off for the afternoon session I stressed it needed to be more challenging and got some lip from the morning guy. I didn't have a great impression of him. Skier said it was a little better in the afternoon but the second teacher said he could have held his own another level up. So basically it was the morning teacher who the poor part of this review goes out to (luck of the draw I guess). Both kids did 24.5 miles today with me and we tore it up. 2 days down at Vail this year, one more to go! read more

The Vail Ski and Snowboard School offers a variety of classes, starting with one day classes to passes for multiple days. They also have packages that include just lessons or the lift tickets and rentals. I was actually disappointed because my ski boots didn't fit very well and my feet went numb. But that negative was offset by how friendly and informative the instructor was. He really made the lesson fun and helped everyone learn. I definently would use the Ski School again for lessons. I think the best value is the 3 day for $200! (lift tickets per day are $65 in the off season). Next time I want to try the Snowboarding. Don't forget that they have classes for children (the little ones catch on so quick!) and teens. read more

Although my trip was fun, the ski lessons were disappointing and a waste of money. My ski instructor had only taught one season and never taught adults before. I took a full day of lessons and feel as though I only gained 20 sold minutes of learning. When I asked questions, she struggled to answer often guessing. Frequently, the response was "i don't know how to explain it". Another instructor had to correct her after she told how how to posture ourselves on the skis. The only thing I learned was to wedge to stop but I was never taught how (how much, how quick, or where to apply the weight). I did okay but most of it was self-taught the following day. A few other instructors had bits to add here and there. Often times, their styles would conflict and would make it that much more confusing. I hope you have more luck. Have fun. read more
