Never checked on us after we got in our private room, charged us for more people than we had (policy and I get it, but like be real...shit happens and not everyone can show) - mind you, we had a reservation so it's not like we just showed up with a crowd of people AND it wasn't crowded when we arrived. Snotty receptionists who don't even look your way. Just get better management all around. Do better. 7.5/10 song selection. POC maybe go to a k-town for better service at karaoke. read more

Came here for the first time for my friend's birthday and it will be the last. The music selection is alright but it's the individuals that work here that ruined the experience, particularly the "security". We had a disagreement with one of the security guards (white, male, gap-toothed) who was a sensitive alpha-male that took it very personally. He refused to give me his first name to report him to management. Instead he slapped my phone out of my hands, yelled at us, forced his other pet security guard to escort us out, and stood behind the bar literally giving us two middle fingers like a child. Napoleon complex or high levels of estrogen? I still can't decide. Regardless I refuse to support a business that has such unprofessional, irate staff members, which multiple reviewers have already complained about. read more

I came here with a few friends and boy oh boy was I surprised. First I would like to thank my fellow yelpers that helped me find this place. Secondly, even though the night started with a slow start it had a good ending especially for a Tuesday night. The Happy hour prices are very reasonable for both the drinks and the songs. There's no food served her but you're allowed to bring in outside food and the pizza shop a few doors down comes in handy after a few shots. The song selections are good, tons of recent songs and a lot of my fave old school songs. The bartender was awesome, not only was she attentive but she through down when she sang. Lol and did I mention the happy hour specials that lasted til 9??? This place was a great time and I honestly can't wait to go back; if it was entertaining on a Tuesday just imagine a weekend! Of all the karaoke joints that have returned since the Before Times, Sing Sing has retained its allure better than any of them. It JUST beats out the trusted Planet Rose just a few blocks north, which is also sitting quite pretty, thanks in part to the pretty bartender who works there. Sing Sing is a welcoming place. You just have to know how to work it. The crowd didn't complain when your pal hit the joint one night and kept singing one Bee Gees song after another in his inimitable falsetto. And there were even a few ladies who slid under his arms shortly after his performances and whispered into your pal's ear, "I'll make you MY Gibb brother. And not the dead ones." Hot Whatever Summer? Well, your pal has been having it! Against all odds, Sing Sing -- with its natural commitment to the streets -- has managed to transform into a place committed to raw social energy and a bit of offsite hubba hubba -- if you know what I mean. I do like karaoke but it takes me time to warm up. I have stage fright and can't sing in front of strangers. Luckily I have friends who love to sing and demand the private room. I won't have it any other way. I reserved a room a week before and gave my credit card, name and phone number for 9 PM on a Friday night. When we showed up, Sing Sing was empty. Wow. I actually gave my driver's license and credit card as collateral before we were led into Room #5. We looked through the books and noticed a very good english song selection. Really new. Chris Brown's "Wall to Wall"? Fitty Cent's "Ayo Technology"? T-Pain? I'm easily impressed as this is the 2nd time (Izu doesn't count) I've gone to a spot in Manhattan since Village Karaoke closed down. If I were in K-town and saw "Buy you a drank" I would enter the number... only to find out that it was not from T-Pain but a weird version from DJ Doc or Seo Taji 12 years ago. In 10 minutes room 5 was heating up. I complained to the dudes at the front and we moved to Room #4 (with 15 bodies, this was quite an acrobatic feat). 3 hours (beer + private room) = unadulterated fun for 15 people (see photos). We had scores from 78 to 97. If someone can explain the karaoke scoring system to me, I'm ready to be enlightened. The final bill cost us $50/head which is not bad at all (we ordered 9+ pitchers of beer which were delivered to our room) and that included the 18% gratuity. They deserved it. I loved it when a server would bring in pitchers of beer, grimacing, as they were being subjected to the cacophony. As we left around midnight, Sing Sing was a sardine can. I don't know if these people were waiting for rooms or just gluttons for punishment. Yes, the public karaoke area is crowded. Yes, the rooms need painting;you can see the spackled areas. Yes, certain rooms are too hot. Still I love this place. The song selection, along with the patient staff, and good service to the private rooms makes me want to come here again. "Crank That Soulja Boy" and "Love in this Club" were the most fun group songs to sing. Thank you, Sing Sing. You were great. I'm coming back... with a tone deaf vengeance. The accumulation of wear and tear has grounded this Sing Sing out of my karaoke rotation. Much like fellow popular chain Japas, there are no two locations alike. It just so happens this is the lesser of the two Sing Sings in Manhattan. MUCH lesser. Some updates since my first review almost 3 years ago: )- It's still small, though there is a basement level for rooms for larger parties. )- There is often no soap in the men's bathroom. Yuck. )- The service is sometimes nonexistent. Literally, the staff left once for 20 minutes during my last visit, leaving a crowd of people confused and fending for drinks and songs. )- The sound system in the two larger rooms I sampled are atrocious. The speakers were crackling and each song seemed to be on a different volume. )- Wired mics. No thank you. And they don't always work either. )- They've got a fairly limited language selection (No Korean or Chinese books). The other Sing Sing is quite the opposite. If you absolutely must go, go on a week night. There are plenty of rooms available and the place is fairly low key. Watch out for the large crowd gatherings at the bar as getting to the door can be a body bumping experience. read more

We came here tonite and rented a private room, and boy is this place expensive.... the song selections were okay... FYI if you plan to drink and rent a private room, they will add an extra drink charge on top of the room rental bill. We had 7 ppl and the total came out to be 400USD for 2 hours. Most places allow drink credit which allows you to order the same amount of drink the room bill is and that adds out to be alot cheaper. I can get the same deal at Duet , Japas 38 and Maru for much less cha-ching $$$$ Japas 38 does 2 hour party packages for 35 dollars only. It includes a sushi platter, american fried appetizer platters and all u can drink sake beer and house wine . its much more economical read more

Sarah was incredibly rude --she gave our group attitude from the beginning (we were the only non white people at this establishment and we were the only ones who received her condescending remarks whenever we had a question) and by the end of the night, she was yelling at us after we questioned why she was overcharging us. My nightmare is to listen to ppl who can't sing, sing on MIC and be drunk to boot. I met a fellow songbird who suggested we do karaoke together (she did it all the time) and we met here for our 1st round. I was TURNT OUT!! Keep in mind that karaoke is karaoke and we're in NYC, so if you come when it's busy, you'll get put in a big song cue full of other ppl or be forced to get a room. The drinks are no-frills, it smells like old bar in there...and it's PERFECT! This is the only bar in all of NYC that I can go at 5pm on a Tuesday, get a mic in my hand and work it out in song. Friends recommended this place for karaoke. The place was kind of dingy had had a divey feel. The restrooms are sort of dirty but not so dirty that it was gross. The rooms were comfortable for the most part. They give you 2 books, one with song names in alphabetical order and another with artist names. As you know all asian places have english songs but not very often vice versa. We came with a group of around 6-7 people. We sang for a good 3-4 hours and got 3 pitchers of beer on a Friday Night. The total cost ended up being around 260ish. Not a bad place, probably not my first pick but I had a great time. read more

Well I don't like karaoke but I needed to work through some stuff, and this did the trick. We came in for what we thought would be a couple of songs and ended up closing the place down. The song catalogue is someone limited, especially if you're looking for rock selections. You get a free song selection with each drink purchase, otherwise they're $2 a piece. What I liked is it's not private rooms, just an open space with a couple of mics floating around. Weeknight crowd is friendly, I ended up singing duets with more than one stranger. read more

The Good: Karaoke is fun! I don't think there were any songs we wanted to sing they didn't have (although we weren't looking for anything too niche). We had a private room, and working the karaoke system was very easy for a group of people who'd never been before. Everyone we interacted with on the staff was nice. Overall, we had a good time. The Not-So-Good: We were in a room with a 6 person minimum. We had 6 people and the room felt too small, almost claustrophobic at times; it would have been even worse with more people. It's dark and in a basement. For the price we paid, I was expecting something a bit nicer. As a prior reviewer wrote, both the surrounding area and the location itself feel very "grungy" (although everything was clean). While we were only in one of the private rooms, the upstairs area was crowded - standing only, and it was hard to walk through to exit. read more

Been here plenty of times with friends. The separate rooms look like a brothel hahah JK.. .but it's really fun with the privacy. Bring a huge group of friends and at the end, split the bill. This is now the third karaoke place I've been to in the city. I think we may have gone with too many people, because we were crammed into what seemed to be the largest room, and after about a half an hour, condensation started appearing on the window on the door due to all the heat we generated. We tried to leave the door open, but understandably they wanted it closed. We were here for about 3 and a half hours, and got plenty of karaoke out of it. I would come back here with fewer people, because since there were so many of us, in order for everyone to do as many songs as they wanted we ended up being here a long time, and it got expensive. read more

On Saturday there was a rude nasty man shouting hateful words and saying he was going to rape people and he hate white and Jewish people. He was asked to leave the bar but was impossible to get him out. The tall security guard tried his hardest to get him out. He kept coming back inside to get him out even though the man didn't want to he is a friend of the bartenders that made it worse. His friend the bartender finally got him out. The tall security guard apologized for the man actions. While the short security guard was standing outside with the man joking with the rude man and saying he agree with the rude man about hating white people. I have been here 4 times and every time the tall security guard is on the vibes is there and he's very respectful but the short one always vaping and not checking I.ds letting anyone in. The drinks are horrible and the place needs to be cleaned the right way to bring a great smell. Good place to come sing just need small work. I love karaoke and I am always excited when I can get a crew on board to join me. I had 2 friends visiting from Philly, both avid karaoke goers. However, before we even got into the karaoke room we rented, the bouncer was a complete jerk to us. He claimed my friends, who have PA IDs, were using fakes. However, he didn't question my MD ID. Of course we were a bit taken aback considering all of us have been of drinking age for several years, and clearly had real IDs. So we were polite about it and they offered a second piece of identification, and we asked if he had a scanner or black light. He reacted so unprofessionally and rude towards them. I asked if there was a manager, which I hate doing because I don't like to question people who are just doing their job, but he was such a douche bag that it was hard for me to keep my cool. I ended up calling the number who had been texting me to confirm the reservation, and he said he was the manager but was off duty. By this point, the bouncer finally let my friends in but refused me at first because he thought I was calling the police... I was so mad because I knew we were about to drop close to $1,000 at this place and I was ready to take our business elsewhere, but half of my friends were already inside. Aside from this incredibly disappointing encounter, the music selection was great and we had a nice server named Greg. Everyone had a great time but I am not interested in returning. read more

Came on a Tuesday night with some friends and had a pretty good time. It's a bit of a trek from the train station to get here. I got to the bar around 6:50pm and it was empty. Like empty empty, I was the only one there. Just me and the bartender hanging out. My friend reserved a room but I just hung out at the bar until the others arrived. Got a rum and coke. It was $4, well drinks $4 for happy hour and some $4 beers. My friends begin to slowly trickle in and also there are some other people coming in and hanging out at the bar. Since the place is so empty and the vibe at the bar is fun we forgo the private room and stay at the bar. They don't serve food here but they allow you to bring in outside food. So we grabbed a pie from the Dollar pizzeria on the corner. Pizza was okay... for a dollar. We had a great time here. We sang our hearts outs and lubricated our vocals cords with liquor. I came here after dinner with a group of friends to have a fun night and this place was such a rip off. Beware of hidden charges when going into the private rooms! Read the "contract" they have you sign, they charge you a service fee but give you zero service. You have to go upstairs to get your own drinks and obviously tip the bartender but then they charge you a "gratuity" on the room. It's doesn't seem right and when I asked the gentleman working the desk he basically blew me off and swiped my card. The staff is rude and I urge people to not go here and let them ruin your night! The idea of hearing my favorite and not so favorite songs butchered by drunks was not appealing. I'm not twelve, I didn't need to jump around and play rock star and let's be honest....... I thought I was too damn cool for karaoke. ... until I found myself belting out KISS & Bowie tunes with a big ass smile on face and realizing something real important..... THIS IS FUN. My experiences at Sing Sing have been very good. I've only done private rooms during the week so can't comment on the bar area or the scene on weekends. The sound system is pretty good, they have a wide ranging selection of (american) music and the staff was quick to refill drinks. Once we had a problem with the sound system and was given a comped pitcher of beer, so no qualms with service. The rooms can be a bit small, so go with people you don't mind being close to. It's also easy to lose track of time and stay too long which can add up ($$). While it's not cheap, the good times had here are worth it. Being an adult is overrated. Release your inner rock star and check out Sing Sing. PS-- do NOT put in Joe Walsh's Life's Been Good. Your friends will not appreciate the 66 measure(!!) instrumental break. read more

It's the scene of my greatest triumph EVER: getting the attention of a hot blonde after singing Short Skirt, Long Jacket, and then getting her to come over TO ME after singing Landslide. True, she was blitzed out of her mind, but so was I. Ok, on to business. I've done this karaoke thing enough times that I can say there are definite do's and don't's: Don't: sing a song that you can't handle. Sure, most of us in here can't sing worth shit, but warbling Fake Plastic Trees in falsetto takes auditory pain to a new level. Don't: pick a song without taking the crowd into consideration. I love Nirvana, but don't sing "Rape Me." You know, the part that goes "Rape me! Rape Me! Rape me my friend!" - it doesn't go over well. Ain't nothing like finishing your song to dead silence.. Don't: pick a rap song (unless you know it cold). Admittedly, my buddy Mark's rendition of Baby Got Back brought the house down when he sang it without looking at the screen (kid you not), but it's rare. More likely, it's some dude who thinks he's funny for picking Rapper's Delight but only knows "Hip, hop, the hippie to the hippie..." and then gives up. Don't: sing anything by Celine Dion. First- you can't do it. Second, more importantly, she sucks. Don't: pick a 10 minute long song if you can't sing well. This is self-explanatory. Do: Pick crowd pleasers from the 70s. Everyone is a closet Neil Diamond fan, so go ahead and sing Sweet Caroline. It'll bring the house down. Do: Sing duets with your drunk friend. It's amazing how two off-key performances can suddenly sound in tune. Do: Keep track of songs that have been sung, and DON'T repeat them. Nothing more painful that listening to Total Eclipse of the Heart three times in the span of an hour. Of course, all of this assumes that you are singing in public at the bar. Well, that was unfortunate. Part of the reason I've always loved Sing Sing (aside from the fact that the place is prone to the group sing-along) is that it's always been equal parts quirky melodrama and goofy shenanigans. And then, somewhere along the way, they went and got "cool." Gone on my last trip in were the stoic by way of diminutive bartender ladies, replaced with some sort of paint by numbers hipster cache. Not as apparent were the thousands of tracks available in heaving tomes, replaced with more of your stereotypical karaoke fare (though I'm leaving open the possibility that perhaps I just missed the rest of the books). The shiny shirts in the crowd couldn't have cared less, but I felt like what's always made this place a singular pleasure was sadly missing. So maybe Sing Sing's been found out. Maybe this is some sort of natural devolution, or maybe we just caught them on a night when all the things that had been so right instead felt so off.
