Unfortunately it does face the Scientology building towards the right, but I simply adjust my gaze to the left and all is well. As a new commuting ccsf student I was on a mission to try the cafes in the area from my BART stop at Montgomery to the Chinatown campus, though I feel my quest has come to an end because I can't get myself to go anywhere other than Nico! It's such a cute, warmly lit cafe and takes me back to Autumn in Le Marais. I find myself purposely leaving for school earlier so that I can spend more time at the cafe in the morning when all the pastries are still in stock. As for the speciality desserts I ordered the tart, pistachio Paris-Brest, and the coffee choux for my best friend's birthday and she loved them all!! It doesn't hurt that the bags they provide come in the cutest shade of pink. Maison Nico is def part of my weekly ritual:)

The 1st time I came here, I left empty handed even though it was only 2:00pm on a Saturday. I decided to make a detour here before walking over to North Beach and was pleasantly surprised to find that there were still some items left even though it was later in the day than my 1st visit. I ended up buying the Croissant De Saison ($5.00) to share: Almond streusel, strawberry-lemon verbena jam, almond cream +Unlike the typical croissant, it was covered in a crispy almond streusel, which was different, but in a good way! The croissant inside still maintained its flakiness. +Not too sweet: Filled w/a lightly sweetened jam +Compared to other bakeries in the city, I thought this was a good value. -Where was the almond cream??? -We couldn't taste the lemon verbena and thought the jam tasted like raspberry. Side notes: 1.) Indoor and outdoor seating 2.) Limited parking: It's walking distance from multiple transit stations, so would recommend that. *Verdict: Atypical French bakery with savory & sweet options and friendly service. The employee who helped me was patient and she answered questions I had about the items in the display cases. I'd like to come back earlier to dine in and try more of their offerings, such as the Pâté en croûte.

I hadn't had a traditional one yet this year, so that was a plus for me. Normally I'm not crazy about the nut moon cakes, but this one was terrific! It was the best moon cake I've had in a while - regular lotus seed with yolk and nuts. The lady at the bakery reminded me of an "auntie" and she was super friendly! Even though today was moon cake, I took a chance and asked if she had any wife cake (Low Po Behng). Unfortunately she didn't, but we had a nice little conversation in Cantonese and it brought me back to childhood and Chinatown in L.A. back in the day. Some people might not like that it's closed (I think that's when she runs out or isn't baking that day) but that's just how it goes. It's nothing personal if someone drives a long way and it's closed. It sounds like sometimes the lines can be long (There was no line for us today - score!) but it's everyone's choice if they're willing to wait or not. It's a little place and you order through the door. To me, that just adds to the quirky adventure of it all. Next time I hope she has Low Po Behng!

Whatever the lady makes for the day, that's the item to get and it can run out soon - then they close shop. Be prepared to pay with cash. There is a Chase and Citibank across the street. If you have a chance to meet "auntie", consider yourself special. Enjoyed our time with a little chit chat - since we were fortunate that it wasn't busy yet. I know some may be upset that it wasn't opened when they showed up - but that's kind of what makes it special - when you do get there in the right day and time. So be warned about the randomness of it all and consider yourself lucky if get a treat.

(i sound like an american health influencer...oh wait i am american). anyway they're a bit too sweet but the frangipane tastes good. the plain one is boring in a bad way. pain suisse is okay too. it's ironic that their best croissants are the day-old ones since they are twice baked with frangipane pumpkin bread was pretty good! again a bit too sweet but spice and pumpkin came in strong like pow pow. bostock was good too - my first time. again a twice baked pastry except it's brioche and the syrup is passionfruit. the fruit flavor was slight but i wish it was stronger. super interesting to eat though i also wish that the heat and freshness of the pastries didn't vary so wildly. some days they're cold as frozen peas and other days they're nice and crispy and warm and fluffy and fireplace-y and hot-mug-y. sorry i have a lot of wishes. unfortunately big B may not be able to satisfy them. i wish i can go back to try the black sesame one but i'm too broke and i have an astronomically low attention span so i can't wait in line

I like the size of this Kouign Amann compared to some other places. The crispy crunchy sugar bits are my favorite parts. Pastry is relatively light and fluffy. (2) seasonal lemon curd Kouign Amann ($5.75) ~ lemon curd added brightness to the pastry. I personally love lemon curd so I would definitely get this again but I'm also excited to see what the future seasonal flavors are. (3) seasonal raspberry almond croissant ($5.25) ~ can't go wrong with these flavors. The raspberry jam was inside. I usually like more filling and the amount of filling in this one was just ok. (4) savory scone (cheddar) ($3.95) ~ a bit dry but that's the nature of scones. I took this home and added some butter. Not sure if I would get it again. Good size though (that's mainly why I would potentially get it again) We took public transit, so we didn't park. Service was quick. We didn't get any pastries warmed up.

Since I'm staying in the Financial District, bakeries have to be at least walking distance. On my search I saw that "banana bread chocolate croissant"...ON MY WAY! I made it over at 930am on a Sunday after I had my real breakfast LOL. There was no line so I know I've scored. As I was ordering, the infamous croissant, I was told there were NO BANANA BREAD CHOCOLATE CROISSANTS - none available until later that afternoon which I would be well into my way back home. What a bummer. Since I was there, I went ahead and ordered the giant chocolate chip cookie which was as round and large as my face! I love cookies and this had mounds of chocolate blocks not really chip size. Good crunch and soft center with melts chocolate. This was like home baked. I was happy with this. I was intrigued by the Kouign amann which is like an encrusted with a sugar crunch, appears like a round crunchy flaky croissant filled or not filled with custard or jam. I did opt for the raspberry filled. I actually liked this too, but did it make up for not have the banana bread chocolate croissant? I don't know, but I'm not disappointed with what I ordered. I'd definitely get these again and recommend to everyone. I did have a long delay at the airport so enjoyed and consumed as I waited for my flight. The shop is smack dab at Union Square which is the perfect spot for a pastry treat. Enjoy the weather on a nice day and people watch while you're there.

I've walked by Cookie Chachi on the way to and from tennis a few times. It's located across the street from Portsmouth Square and though it offers no seating, looks very cute and there's plenty of outdoor seating options nearby. (Also it's so good to take to-go.) I picked up two cookies--1 Dubai pistachio knafeh and 1 toffee chocolate. Both were delicious--they were unique, with different spices and complex flavor. They were chewy and fresh, even though I didn't eat them/share them for a few hours. They didn't feel overpowering or overwhelming despite their large size. It's minority woman-owned and service was helpful and warm (just like the cookies!) It's a pricey cookie, but it's delicious and unique. It's not something I can make at home!

It's a super small location, and they clearly make the cookies elsewhere and package it in super premium packaging to sell for a premium price too. 4.5/5 Dubai Pistachio Knafeh was really nice and you could really tell all the flavors: pistachio, spin pasty dough, and the chocolate chip cookie flavor. It was on the doughy side, but pop it into a toaster oven for 1-2 min and it was as if you got it fresh from the kitchen! I'm very intrigued to the try their other flavors now that I had the one that was their best selling currently. It was a whooping $7, so definitely a premium place for just being a storefront where they sell packaged cookies, but it's clear that it's high quality!
