It is time for a larger building. This place is crowded, again. As a matter of fact, every time I come it is crowded. I witnessed 6 customer turn away, because of the long line. The first young lady, server you encounter needs a lot of customer service training... So I noticed on the last few trips in, the side portions are smaller. Amazing soul food! You can never go wrong with Simp's. It's that type a food you take a bite and automatically close your eyes and start shakin your head it tastes so good. This place was in my home town of Galveston for lots of years. After a hurricane many years ago it moved to La Marque. They serve cafeteria style. Today I went in and got a country style rib plate. It's served on a bed of white rice. I had it with the country gravy. For sides I had collard greens and yams. A cornbread muffin is included as well. Got it to go. Always delicious! So very flavorful. In my opinion one plate of theirs is big enough for two people. They serve large portions. Amazing food and huge portions. A plate will run you about $13. read more

Pretty good soul food in Galveston County, although there isn't a lot of competition. When you arrive, be prepared for a short wait through the cafeteria style line and make sure you talk through the holes in the plexiglass, servers are not good at reading lips. Usually there are at least 10 entree choices, and nearly 12 different veggies. Desserts are toward the end, by the register, and they usually have peach cobbler, various cakes and pies. If you're looking for a meal under $10, you don't have many options. Many customers order one of the sandwiches for $8.50, such as shrimp sandwiches or pork chop sandwiches. You could also order a small gumbo. The fountain drinks are a little on the high side, for a hole in the wall that is, at $2.50 each. The good news is that the prices include all sales tax. On my recent visit, I had the 2 meat dinner, with ox tails and fried shrimp. The shrimp were not the biggest ones they had, because they gave me bottom of the bin ones, while my colleague behind me in line received the bigger fresher ones in the next bucket the brought out. They were still lightly breaded and pretty good. The ox tails were even worse. They gave me about 11 small pieces which consisted of mostly bone. As far as the sides, I tried the mac and cheese and green beans. A few of the beans still had the stem on them, so watch out for hard pieces. The mac n cheese was better. However, as my colleague also noticed, the sides were pretty bland. The cornbread is very sweet and you taste alnost more sugar than corn in these. If I come back anytime soon, I''d probably try the homemade links, the pork chops or the enchiladas and one of the delicious looking desserts. read more

My co workers suggested I give this place a try. I've driven past it but had no idea what it was. It's small and locally owned and did not disappoint. I tried the smothered pork chops, greens, and broccoli cheese casserole. The portions were huge. You can share between 2 people or have it for lunch and dinner. I will be trying again since there are certain items served on certain days. Highly recommend if you're in the area in the mood for souls food. read more

Greatest soul food ever, Hands Down. Been going to Simps since its was in the back of Palm Terrace in Galveston. Several location changes and I always found my way to them, and Still love it to this day. But my only complaint is service is not that happy friendly type service, more of a "Wut you want type service" and they're hours of operation are how ever they damn good and well please. Go there for the food, YES, Definitely, but don't expect courteous, politeness, or much else. This type of food has so much potential, that by now it should be a larger business with a Lubys style cafeteria, that would give every restaurant a real run for its money. Its sad to say that its Just poorly ran, managed, and owned. read more

This place is amazing!!! I never liked okra, but the okra here at Simps it's so delicious!! The chicken is seasoned very nice and cooked perfectly well!. The sweet potatoes are super delicious and sweet! But not overwhelming sweet!! I Can keep going on and on about the food, but you just have to go and get you some! The let the ambiance fool you and don't let the outside stop you from going In. The ladies are so sweet and friendly. read more

It was a random lunch stop. My brother recommended the place so me and my man stopped in for some oxtails. Let me tell you...best oxtails I've had in a LONG TIME. We got southern cabbage and broccoli rice and cheese casserole. The portions were enough for two meals. So I had the rest for dinner. Omg. This is why I swear by hole in the wall restaurants....they are always THE BEST. You will not be disappointed. read more

Do NOT judge by the outside ... go inside and judge by the line and the aroma and all the smiling people. Everything is made from scratch ... you get to see what is there when you get there and see. 4 stars because 1 adult and 3 kids can eat off the 2 meat dinner with fried pork chops and shrimp for kids and 2 sides which consists of rice/gravy which comes automatically . Yams are sweet and cut up perfectly. I usually get the orka with tomatoes and sausage on the side which is a meal within it self, the kids like the broccoli rice casserole, I'm personally not a fan of it , but maybe that's why it's so good to the kids. Ambiance working class/hustle flow, workers never smile or greet it could be the heat from hot trays . I tried the peach cobbler , but big disappointment it was only syrup and a few peaches no crust. Cake was a nice size but on the dry side so it was tossed. Overall the prices aren't bad compared to others in area . read more

Classic soul food fix. Came here after church on Sunday. Was able to get in right before the crowd. We typically get out of service around 1230, where as other churches in the area are finishing closer to 1. You can definitely tell this is an after church favorite. This is comfort food at its finest. I ordered oxtails with rice and gravy, collard greens and yams! Now my one critique is that they add a little sugar to their greens. That's something I noticed some people do. I on the other hand didn't grow up with "sweet greens". Also if you are finicky about your food touching, THIS AINT FOR YOU!!!! Because they load them boxes we paid 50 something for four boxes and it was definitely enough for TWO MEALS for each person. I try to support our black establishments as much as I can but after today, I will rethink that statement. The owner as well as the employees are rude. The place is filthy as well as the attire the cooks and servers wear. You walk in to a greeting of pesky flies but no communication from the workers... No one wears a hair net or a mask and the servers were sweating profusely over the food... Save your gas money and support another establishment. read more

Good night!! That's the last thing you'll hear if you ear here. We went here on our way back to Houston leaving Galveston. Service was quick and efficient. They give you plenty of food so don't try to order it all. I ordered two meats and made a huge mistake. This food will five you the infamous ITIS. If you know, you know. I have tried other soul food restaurants in Houston and they do not compare! I thought I was biased at first because I'm from Galveston and have been going to simps since the very beginning of their business. I love love their sides. Macaroni and cheese, broccoli casserole, dressing, greens are all A1! Although I have never been disappointed in a meal from their, I usually get their fried shrimp and fish. The corn bread muffins are good too. When I'm really treating myself I'll get their kool aid (very potent lol) and their butter cake. read more

I ordered shrimp and fish. Both the fish and the shrimp was cooked to hard. Also I ordered the meal but I wanted my liquid sides to keep my shrimp and fish from getting wet. The charged me as if I was getting 2 sides separately. The food ha no favor. Only thing that was good was my stewed okra. . Simps used to #1. On a scale 1-10 with 10 being the best I would rate you a 3 1/2. Sorry for back to the old simps. read more

I used to go to Simp's when it was located in Galveston, heard they relocated to La Marque, that is true, they're located on Hwy 3, & they still serve that good, down-home soul food, with enormous portions you might not be able to finish, items like fried pork chops, BBQ ribs, chittlins, fried shrimp, okra, cabbage, beans, rice, yams, etc. very good & filling comfort food. read more

Amazing down home food here. Everything is really good and the prices are very reasonable. They have fried chicken, baked chicken, catfish, shrimp, ox tails, pigfeet. I had the ox tails which were absolutely delicious. They are open fire lunch and dinner. If your in the area, I would highly recommend paying a visit. I Promise You This down home - better than your grandmothers cooking - super casual restaurant will become your favorite Soul Food Kitchen! Huge helpings moderately priced, but unless you are sharing you might want to order the child size portions (plates). Luckily, it was somewhat on the way back so we decided to give it a try. Rolling through San Leon made us question if we were going to the right place. It didn't feel lively and definitely was not giving 'Coastal Chic', like how Pier 6 has been described. Upon arrival, it was a totally different vibe and 'Coastal Chic' is a fitting description for the place. We were seated right away and they offered a high chair for our little one. We started out with fresh oysters and a flight of margaritas. If you're an oyster fan, it's worth getting the oysters. Super fresh. The flight presentation was so beautiful. My husband and I had fun trying the different margaritas. The blue one was coconut flavored. It reminded me of a piña colada but with tequila. We were surprised that we liked this one. The pink one was watermelon flavored. We could taste the smokiness of the mezcal in it. This was a nice, not sweet drink. The white one was their classic take on margarita. We thought this one was too sweet for our taste buds. The orange one was mango and I think chamoy. This reminded me of the Mexican candy Lucas - sweet and tangy. All drinks were finished. LOL Now to the main dishes. My husband had the Mahi Mahi and said the fish was fresh and had a good amount of seasoning on it. The risotto and mushroom was a solid pairing with it. He cleared the dish. I had the tomato salad and clam chowder. Their tomato salad was so good. It was light and refreshing. I love that there were dill and capers too. Their clam chowder is definitely different compared to others I've had. The soup was more like a light creamy broth. The clam is served whole. Oyster crackers were also in it vs served on the side. Even though it was different, I didn't mind it and killed everything. Service was as expected for the time of day. Overall, we enjoyed our experience and would make the trip to the San Leon area again. A few notes: Pier 6 does have a kids menu and there's changing table in the restroom, along with some diapers. This place is in between Kemah and Galveston. It's about 15 minutes drive from Kemah and 25-30 minutes drive from Galveston.

We had ordered: * Thai salad : 1/5 nothing Thai about this salad and it was terrible. * 2 dozen raw oysters: 4/5 decent good for Nov. * seafood gumbo: 1/5 we had the gumbo here before and it was decent but this time it was not the same and tasted like burnt roux which should never be served. * burger with a gravy sauce: 1/5 The brown sauce was pour around the burger and the burger was placed in the center. The burger bun was soggy and the worst burger we ever had. It was the strangest burger because we couldn't pick it up to eat it since it was soggy from the pour of the brown sauce. This burger was $25+ which was uneatable. The beef patty was unseasoned and dry. Fast forward March 2026, after the last dining experience we almost didn't want to come back. Only reason was for the oysters. We were happy to see the items that we really enjoyed was back on the menu! *Only fried shrimp $24.99: 5/5 comes with coleslaw, stellar jalapeño hush puppies which is the best I've had!, and fries. The shrimp is fresh and good size! Nothing beats a texas gulf shrimp! *Tide to fried $28.99- 4/5 comes with fried tx gulf shrimp, fried oysters, and fried red snapper, Cole slaw, hush puppies, and fries. The fired oysters were so good!!!! Like wow and well seasoned! So fresh! The shrimp is perfect! Red snapper super disappointed because it was super fishy. I do not recommend the fried red snapper. Next time definitely get the only shrimp or only oysters combo and pass on the tide to fried which included the fried snapper. *3 dozen oysters - $14.99 per dozen: 5/5 the oysters in March a plump and juicy! So much better than Nov (early season) oysters. The oysters Unfortunately had shells from shucking the oysters so when eating them I bite into shell and thought I almost cracked a tooth. Quality of the oysters great 5/5. The shucking and handle of the oysters 1/5. No guest should eat shuck raw oysters bite on shell. That's a law suit waiting to happen and I hope this establishment does better because we love their freshness of their oysters. *Ocean water $6 happy hour : 5/5 reminds me of sonic ocean water except spiked lol *Watermelon slush $6 happy hour: 1/5 it was so strong and I felt the smokiness was too much. Love the ocean water more because it hides the alcohol and easy to drink. Service was meh. The place was packed at 5pm on a Friday. Not sure why our entrees and drinks came out before our appetizers which I felt was inappropriate. We had to flag down our waiter a few times for items. He did check in with us once after we got our food and took our first bites. Do I recommend Pier 6? Based on this recent visit I am glad I didn't write them off and yes. The food was great minus the oyster cleanliness. Definitely a favorite place for oysters and the best fried shrimp/oyster plate the area and Galveston even. Only negative is the blasting of the music. It's so loud we can not hear our conversation and will induce you a guarantee headache. It does not matter if you sit inside or outside.. it's the same noise level which is concert loud. The videos killer outside and so beautiful but I feel the blaring of music takes away from the charm of this place. If you are into rowdy loud places this is for you. Other than that, maybe distract one self by ordering happy hour drinks so it helps with the intense loud music.
