Rigos Cafe seems to be a Texas City staple for breakfast done right. They have that old town, homey diner type feel, but with a couple tex mex twists. Walking in, we were immediately greeted and told to sit where we like. We came on a nice Saturday morning so I'd say a good 70% of the tables were full. Just by looking over at the other tables, we knew the portions were big and everyone looked happy. Service was solid. Food wise, we tried their migas a la mexicana, Reuben sandwich, the "Katastrophic," and their Sat morning special. The special was 2 big, fluffy blueberry pancakes, 2 eggs, choice of meat, and a drink. The "Katastrophic" is a giant pile of toast/biscuit, hash browns, country ham, cheese, 2 eggs, sausage gravy, and sprinkled w/ crumbled bacon. The Reuben was your classic Reuben w/ pastrami and sauerkraut on pumpernickel bread. The migas were your classic eggs w/ tortilla chips/cheese mixed in, home fries, refried beans, and your choice of meat. Honestly you can't go wrong with anything you order here. The menu has something everyone would like. The family that owns the cafe seems to be really nice, be sure to support local! Enjoy! PS. The coffee is great and always fresh/hot as it should be!

Big Rigo burger with onion rings and side of sweet potato fries. Husband had a regular cheeseburger.

But once you arrive, you're in for a real culinary trip south of the border. I dropped in very eager to try one of their taco plates. While the pictures on the restaurant's Facebook page had already piqued my appetite, I wanted to see for myself if they were the real deal. So, for my first meal here, I ordered the Pastor Street Tacos. Like at any good Mexican restaurant, my meal began with chips and salsa. It's an unwritten rule of mine that if the complimentary chips and salsa are good, the main dishes will be just as good, if not better. Fortunately, that rule holds true for Mr. Taco. I tried both the red and green salsas, which were truly spicy--a definite plus in my book. The tacos arrived after a few minutes. While the menu said they were miniature--there were four in total--they were a perfect portion. Anchored by marinated pork and topped with fresh onions and cilantro on corn tortillas, the tacos were accompanied by a bean-filled consomme and rice. With just one bite, I imagined myself on the streets of Guadalajara or Monterey; the authenticity was simply evident. I occasionally dipped the tacos in the consomme, which I could describe as a bit earthy and salty. Overall, the meal was incredibly enjoyable. This dish is a prime candidate for a go-to order on a return visit. I was very well taken care of by our waiter, Samuel. The meal's spiciness had me quickly finishing my water, but he kept the glasses coming without me having to ask. While working on the meal, I was parked in front of one of the business's massive TVs, which were tuned to the Astros game. That said, I consider Mr. Taco an ideal place to catch a game. It helps that it's open until 10 p.m.--or 2 a.m. on the weekends--though a staff member told me that's assuming they're not having a slow night. Price-wise, I'd say the costs are quite fair. My platter was about $13, which would be roughly three dollars more elsewhere.

We had queso, birria tacos, and carnitas - all of the food was fresh and had great flavor. The ambience itself is great - and would make a great happy hour or dinner spot! There are plenty of Vietnamese restaurants in the area, but I felt Basil House deserves a go. Essentially a hole in the wall, it's located along Palmer Highway not too far from where it meets 146. The building may look small, but the interior begs to differ somewhat. This is the third time I use "Vietnamese," but what's so unique about this eatery is that it also offers Thai dishes. I decided to do both for my first visit; I ordered a Vietnamese grilled pork rice plate and Thai chicken skewers. My orders arrived at my table at the same time, which I thought was nice. Regarding the skewers, the chicken was pretty sizable. It was so tender that it came off the stick after a bite or two. I must admit it was dry, but still a nice way to start a meal. As for the main star of the show, the rice plate, I have nothing but immense love for it. The kitchen staff wasn't stingy with the amount of meat they placed on the plate. Tender just like the chicken, the grilled pork carried a sweet taste that got even better when dipped in the accompanying fish sauce. Oh, I forgot to mention the skewers and the rice plate had cucumbers, which raised the tangy factor. I capped everything off with fried banana and vanilla ice cream. A man who I assumed was the owner of the place acted as my server. He did an outstanding job, refilling my drink and giving me extra napkins. By my estimate, Basil House is the closest Vietnamese restaurant to my house. No need to travel at least ten miles if I want my fill in ice plates, spring rolls, or even pho.

I placed an order through their online system, and the automated message said it would be ready in about 20 to 25 minutes. I arrived 30 minutes later and was told it would be another five minutes. This restaurant is interesting because it's set up like a small stall inside a convenience store. That means there isn't much seating aside from a small two-top, and most of the food is meant to be taken to go. On the night I was there, a man and woman were working together behind the counter. For dinner, I decided on the chicken kebab plate while my wife went with the chicken feta salad. I had the choice of rice or salad and went with the fattoush salad, then picked two sides: cauliflower and eggplant salsa. I also asked for mine to be spicy. Both of our meals looked good when I opened the to-go boxes, although I would have had a hard time spotting the cauliflower at first. I started with my chicken, which was served over the salad, and it was delicious. The chicken was moist, the salad was flavorful, and the spice blend added a great kick without being overpowering. Both of my sides were good too. The eggplant was nicely cooked with a custard-like texture, and the cauliflower was roasted well with a tasty sauce on top. My wife also really enjoyed her salad, especially the chicken. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. I wasn't sure what to expect when I first found this place, but the food ended up being delicious.
