We went to Eculent tonight. It has been several years since our first time which was an event to be…read moreremembered. I am sorry to say that this is no longer the case. We did the HRW menu that was 4 courses. Our first course was the Pig in a Cloud. This was whimsical but had too much cotton candy vs the small 1 inch cube of pork belly. The pork belly by itself was good but was small - not a good ratio. We then waited more almost 30 minutes for our second course but what came out was our third course. We only were told sorry that I second course had been said as cleared but had not been delivered. In just a few minutes our second course came which was their smoking mushroom soup and the foie quas. The soup was a consommé and only smoking due to dry ice. The foie quas was under seasoned. Again, very little or no protein. The next course was a corn butter and shrimp dish and a beef bourguignon. The beef bourguignon was the most protein of any of the dishes we had for the night. The shrimp and corn butter was tasty but had a small amount of shrimp. The beef bourguignon was under seasoned and no flavor of red wine that you would expect. Our desserts were good but not great - we did the chocolate tarts and the limoncello sorbet. A significant issues is that the only wine available is their labeled wines which was overpriced for the quality/taste. The amount of protein provided was minimal and spending that amount of money and still not feeling like you had a full meal is an issue. The service was slow and that was made worse by the mess up with our second course. A Major issue is there is a 20% service fee added that was not disclosed and then being explained in the restaurant that this goes to the restaurant and is not the tip for service. You need to be upfront about this and how that money is being used. Everyone in the restaurant that night was surprised to hear this and confused on what to do because the people bringing out the food was the owner/Chef David and what looked to be a very young assistant. The only other front house person was the combo hostess/bar tender/take the card that you check mark your order from (kind of like the McDonalds kiosk but with a sharply). This approach for me was uncomfortable since it was unexpected and not upfront, clear, and strange since the chef/owner was acting as a server. For me this lack of being upfront and clear is a red flag for any restaurant because it is manipulative in my opinion. We had been to Le Jardinier and BCN just days before this and can safely say that the cost for the experience there vs at Eculent are not aligned. For me, this has made us very sorry to decide this will likely be the last time we visit Eculent after we had so much loved our past experience. Other options are available for a better experience and a better value for your money.

The Eculent Picnic Basket was the best course of the meal, although we did not receive much explanation of each item, which took away from the experience. The Pig in a Cloud was unique, but the pork belly was tiny and the entire bite tasted overwhelmingly like paprika with only a hint of sweetness. The second course was extremely underwhelming. The Smoking Mushroom Soup seemed to rely almost entirely on the dry ice theatrics because the actual broth was mediocre at best. The Foie Gras and Caviar Brioche tasted like something that could easily be recreated with grocery store ingredients, while the brioche itself was so dry and crispy that it practically disintegrated in my mouth. The third course was the worst. The shrimp in the Shrimp in Corn Butter was cooked well, but the sauce was overwhelmingly sweet. The Beef Bourguignon with Whipped Potatoes was even worse. The red wine flavor was harsh, the potatoes were bland, and the entire dish lacked seasoning. Dessert was barely an improvement. The Assorted Chocolate Tarts were tiny and dry, while the Chicha Morada Sorbet tasted more like spiced bubblegum. The Crème Brûlée was the best of the three, but even that was disappointing because the caramelized sugar topping was already soggy. Overall, this was one of the most disappointing dining experiences I've had in Houston. Even at the discounted $55 Houston Restaurant Weeks price, I felt ripped off by both the tiny portions and poor execution. The elaborate presentations may look impressive, but theatrics cannot make up for mediocre food. I cannot imagine paying the regular prices for this experience, and I would not recommend Eculent based on my visit.

We were never checked on, any time we needed something (like a drink) we had to flag someone down. Even to pay the bill we had to go through 3 people to track down whoever was supposed to be our server. The servers were unpleasant as well, they were too busy talking to eachother to even know what's going on. I will never step foot inside of this place again, coming here in the first place was a huge mistake. Like I said, do yourself a favor and go literally anywhere else. I bet the Denny's down the street would serve you better than this place ever could.

Despite the noise, the dining room still offers an excellent view of the canal and the people pulling up on their boats. Again, the food here is OK. Nothing more. In fact, it was quite reminiscent of a Fertita-owned restaurant with lines of delivery trucks from Sysco and Gordon's lined up at the loading dock. More specifically, the coconut shrimp came out crispy with not much flavor beyond the cloyingly sweet sauce served alongside. The fries are battered. Not my bag, though they arrived at the table hot and crispy. (Since when do crispy fries need batter?!?) The tacos were average. Not bad, but nothing different than you would get at most other places. Same with the Caesar salad and crispy Brussels sprouts. The crab bisque tasted tomatoey. That's not a deal breaker, but I expect a garlicky, buttery broth that has been thickened with heavy cream. Not the case here, as this was flour-thickened with inexpensive ingredients. And the amount of crab was negligible. Those *are* deal breakers. The beer selection is fine here. And, again, the service was really good on our visit. Bottom Line: I totally want local businesses to succeed. But my money is also hard-earned, and I want the food to taste local and to be made with high-quality ingredients. When it doesn't -- and this place doesn't -- I might as well grab a Groupon and go to Red Lobster.

When we heard about the Buffalo Trace Bourbon Night, we saw it as an opportunity to give Opus a second chance while enjoying an event centered around one of our interests. As a bourbon enthusiast and collector with more than 120 bottles in my collection, this was a special event that I had been looking forward to for over a week. About a week and a half before the event, I called and made what I believed was a reservation. During that call, I specifically asked whether my wife could attend and have something other than bourbon. The young man I spoke with even put me on hold and checked with someone before confirming that would be fine. At no point during that conversation was I told that I was being placed on a waiting list rather than receiving a confirmed reservation. When we arrived the night of the event, we were handed a drink and then informed that we could not enter because there was no space available. Standing there with a drink in hand only to be told we were not actually admitted to the event was embarrassing and frustrating. We had planned our evening around this experience and were excited to attend, only to find out that what we thought was a reservation was apparently a spot on a waiting list. What made the situation even more disappointing was the lack of effort to make things right. Mistakes happen, and most reasonable people understand that. However, there was no meaningful attempt to accommodate us, no alternative offered, and very little acknowledgment of the inconvenience and embarrassment caused by the situation. The food itself remains what I would consider average--certainly not bad, but not memorable enough to overcome the customer service experience. We ultimately left and went to Kemah Steak Company, where we enjoyed excellent service, great steaks, and some outstanding Garrison Brothers bourbon.
