The service and the food were great. The food came in Large portions and was very tasty. The staff was friendly and hospitable.

Very delicious southern style home cooking. I had a two meat plate - ox tail and fried pork chop - both meats were cooked to be flavorful and not greasy. One of my sides was yams. Those yams were so good I could have a bowl of those for a meal. Word of advice; you will leave this place full. Their servings generous. If you have a job where you will have to seated after lunch, you'll have a hard time staying awake because you'll want to nap from being full. read more

Well, how do I start this off???? Ok, first things first the food. I remember years ago more than 14 years ago when Simps was a real Gem in Galveston County. I remember going to Simps before my class at Galveston College. The (older lady I believe she was the Mother) used to run the cash register. Anyway, back to the food! The food was so damn good back then. The Mother always greeted everyone and made you feel welcome. Not today baby! These youngsters look at you all stupid. You can't ask questions without the girl with the tattoo on her wrist replying back with an attitude! Yes, Im from LaMarque but I haven't lived there since 2004. I don't even visit but maybe twice a year to see family. I'm wondering why this female I've never seen in my life is giving me stupid looks and attitude. Though baffled I may be I buy two plates anyway because I can't wait for my Haitian boyfriend to taste a Galveston County favorite! Why?????? The food sucked! The cornbread used to be so sweet and yummy. It tasted like dough today no flavor and certainly not sweet! Yams half cooked and hard. Okra was ok. Smothered pork chops ok. Rice and gravy was disgusting, one bite and I spit it out! I couldn't possibly let my boyfriend eat any of that crap after he worked hard all day. There wasn't a dog fit to eat that mess! Never again. I try to patronize the business of my people but I won't ever be back to this place or any other business associated with it. I can't help but to wonder what that sweet little lady would say if she saw how this place is being run today. I won't ever get that $30 back again in life! And to the girl with a grudge, if it bothers you to see other women who look like you in their professional work attire then perhaps you should look for another job because you obviously hate yours!! #moneywasted read more

In the area for work and this place was suggested. The food did not disappoint for a to go order, with great portions and a wide variety of proteins and vegetables. Food was very rich and extremely well seasoned. Would recommend this place for anyone looking for traditional Southern style cooking. Would not recommend if your trying to lose weight. If you catch yourself at home and miss your grandmas cooking but you lazy and don't feel like putting your ankles it nothing,Simps is a guaranteed good meal. $13 a plate but well worth it . They give you a generous amount and two people can low key eat off of one plate. Unless your greed like me and can kill it solo solo lol. Tasty like ya mamas food close by. My problem with Simp's is that you never know when they're open. They don't an "Open" sign, or if they do, it's not that visible. On top of that, when you go and order food, they make you not want to give them your money. Simply, because they look at you like you're crazy. Or they'll make you feel uncomfortable, and not be friendly at all. They have ok food, but I will never go back, again. Not until they get hours, and better customer service. Customer service + good quality food + good prices will take you a looooooooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnggggggg way. Now, if it's expensive, at least make sure it's worth the hassle to spend the money. read more

At first I wasn't sure about this place. It was quiet and not many cars in the parking lot. I'm glad I went in. My roommate and I have started ordering food weekly. It's like ordering from a cafeteria, you pick your main dish and two sides. They serve so much food, you could share or have some now and some later. You get that stuffed feeling every time. My two girlfriends and I came here during lunch and had a delicious meal. However slightly on the pricey side with drink around 15 bucks per person but you really can't go wrong. That was ok, because you get plenty of food for that price. All southern style, Fried catfish/chicken, meat loaf, ox tails, green beans, mashed potatoes, Fried shrimp, mac N cheese, really cant go wrong with any of the selections. Had lunch at Simps today, one of our favorite local places to eat. If you're coming here on your lunch break, don't expect to make it back to the office in an hour. The wait is quite long. But if you don't mind the long line, the food and portions are awesome. They offer 1 meat and 2 sides for $13 and 2 meat 2 sides for $16. The 1 meat 2 sides that I got, smothered pork chops with boudin and greens, was so big that I had to take it to-go with me. The corn bread that comes with the meal adds a nice hint of sweetness that counters the bitter greens really well. The smothered pork chops were savory and season well. My favorite was what my buddy got, fall off the bone smothered short ribs. Next time, I'm going for the golden/shimmering fried fish. Staff kept piling it on for the lady in front of me. There's so many delicious choices that you can choose from. Lastly, staff can be a bit standoffish but I forgot about all that when I was stuffing my face with the delicious food. read more

Great homestyle southern cooking. Short ribs, smothered steak, ham along with great sides like mashed potatoes, black-eyed peas, cabbage, lima beans. Reminds me of the food my granny used to cook. Really sad that they moved out of Galveston. Definitely try it, it's not your normal restaurant. Like I said, it's like eating Sunday dinner at your granny's house. read more

I've been here a few times, and although having never been there when they were in Galveston, I heard good things about them when they were there. I like their location, but as expressed by another Yelper, I don't like the inconsistency in operating hours. One week they're open on a Saturday, and the next they're closed on Saturday, but open on Sunday. Still, the food is cooked and presented impressively, and is comparable to Kelly's with a soul food flair. The standard dinner, I don't find too pricey, but $2.50 for a avg. size drink is a little steep. The young man serving me pleased eager to serve and at no point did I feel culturally out of place. I love little places like this, wherein the owner(s) had a dream and made it work. This place fills a niche for the family that wants a healthy meal, but doesn't want to spend time frying fish, chicken etc. The only comparable place you're going to find other than Kelly's is Grandy's and , well, just, um, no. read more

Me and my husband were new to the area and were recommended this place by my husband's co-workers. When I initially started going I was very impressed with the food but was kinda put off by there not being a menu like you would find in most places, but that was just a minor detail. When we went back there a few times we began to notice very HORRIBLE customer service from a couple of younger ladies who worked there. They were just outright rude not only to us but anyone else who came through the doors..it was as if they were doing us a favor by being there. Expressionless faces...no "hi"...nothing like that! I will say that there is an older lady who works there and she is the ONLY one that knows how to treat customers. What's worse is the past few times have been somewhat disappointing...the oxtails we ordered were tough with brown salty water they called gravy. Very disappointing! Plus you never know their hours because it's not posted on the door....you just have to drive there and be suprised. We will not be back. While overall there the food is ok for southern cooking we don't think it's worth paying almost $16 for a plate for rude service and not knowing if the food will be consistently good every time. They may have been a hit when they were in Galveston, but they certainly need work now. read more

OMG! I am so happy a good buddy told us about this true hidden gem ! We have driven all over Houston area looking for good soul/comfort food and only one place was OK! Now today we went to Simps and although I only got the veggie plate , it was so yummy and I felt like I was eating at my Grandma's table back in the days , only thing missing was a big glass of fresh brewed sweet tea! My hubby got the fried pork chops , I had to try that as it's one of my faves and OMG , that is the best I think I've had in years ! The greens were perfectly seasoned and the mac n cheese , mmmm ( and hubby says I'm picky ) ! Everything we had between us two was excellent ! I was just mad I could not eat more as I've been sick and unable to eat much ! I def brought it all home to have later ! The people working were sweet and helpful ! Portions are large and prices are great for some good home cooked comfort food ! I really want to go back when I can eat lots more !
