I had a pretty good experience here. I wasn't expecting much as I've learned that no thai place can compare to Sala Thai, my favorite restaurant. I ordered the pad thai jay and my friends ordered the pad see ew and a soup. My pad thai was great. What I really loved about it was that instead of just giving me tons of broccoli, they gave me an assortment of veggies. The mushrooms were so tasty! I also found zucchini and carrots mixed in there. I love coming to this resturant and have been a regular since moving to the bay 3 years ago. It's a family ownes business and the wait staff is very nice and polite. My fave. Dishes to order is the chicken fried rice, ya mun sen (can't spell it), papaya salad and deep fried egg rolls. 3.5 STARS... When you first go into the restaurant you will noticed the very warm atmosphere the Thai restaurants gives you. The interior of the restaurant is very warmly decorated and lit. I have the Thai BBQ Beef, which was pretty good. The taste is there, and quite well balanced. I however find that the sauce that came with it might be a little too spicy for some people, since they use fresh peppers. All the food presentation wise is really nice. I gotten very good feedback from my other friends on the food also. I would recommend this place if you are within the area. Beautiful restaurant, superior service, but very mediocre food. We were very impressed by the modern exotic decor when we walked in, definitely not something you expect from a Thai restaurant in Newark area. The staff was extremely friendly, helpful and attentive. They checked on us several times to see if everything is ok and made sure our water glasses were never empty. We ordered Tom Yum soup, House Special Trout, and Duck Curry. You could tell the ingredients were fresh and meaty, but the taste just wasn't quite there. Everything tasted bland and very ordinary. They didn't have any "House Special" items on the menu but they had "special of the day" which was the House Special Trout. The trout was fresh and soft, but it wasn't very "special". It tasted like Chinese sweet and sour fry fish. It is a nice pretty place to take someone special out to. I like this place. it is our spot for when we want to go Thai food. although the dining experience is nice as well. it is a well kept restaurant with good decor and very friendly and respectful people to serve you. Pad see Ew, Panang chicken, crab fried rice and Tom Ka soup are what we usually get. all the dishes are good and quite tasty and their portion sizes are quite large. none of them are out of this world but they do the job and full you up and leave you satisfied. I chose this place based mostly on its proximity to my hotel and an enthusiastic recommendation from a member of the front desk staff. There wasn't anything really bad about the meal or the experience, but it wasn't particularly good on any level either. I might go back if I was staying across the street again, but only for the sake of convenience. I ordered Panang Curry with Chicken, Thai Spicy. I agree with another reviewer that the flavor and texture was much like that of frozen curry-in-a-box (something you might get at Trader Joe's.). It was fine, but definitely not an authentically prepared Thai dish. Mostly, I was disappointed that the curry lacked richness and complexity in flavor, and the heat was pretty weak for "Thai Spicy"--the highest of their four-tiered scale. I also found it weird that my Panang was served spread thinly over a plate. I essentially had to scrape it onto my rice, as opposed to spooning nice warm curry from a bowl. The service was friendly but minimal. I was being cryogenically preserved by the air conditioner overhead, so I ate and got out of there pretty quickly (which required me to take some initiative with the check). A minor detail, but I truly disliked the look and feel of the faux leather table covers. Yuck. "Meh" sums it up nicely. Two stars. read more

Nothing compared to The Original Krung Thai in San Jose. Have had other dishes there numerous times (because I worked nearby) but just comparing the sweet sticky rice and mango alone, Simply Thai's version was terrible. It tasted and smelled like meat! I'm not the food expert but I'm pretty sure dessert should not taste nor smell like that. BTW, it's a tiny restaurant so don't bother coming here if you have a large group. Reasons why I liked this place: Decor and seating is very modern. They took the time to make this restaurant look nice and warm. Food and drinks were tasty. We got iced tea, mmm. We ordered the veggie spring rolls and corn cakes. The corn cakes were really good, spring rolls tasted like every where else- standard. For dinner we order panag chicken (SOO GOOD), eggplant dish, red curry, veggie pad see ew, and veggie fried rice. Things that need serious improvement: SERVICE!!!!!! It took 20-30 minutes just for someone to help us order! Finally when the came we ordered beverages, appetizers, and dinner all at once in fear that we wouldnt get their attention again. Also no refills on water! And dont sit in the back, either the AC vent was above us and or some door in the back kitchen was open. If the food were bad, this place would easily receive a 1 star. If this place improved their service this place could have received 4 stars. I am on a hunt for a good thai place in Fremont/Union City/Newark/Milpitas area. Yummmmm. Came here because I was in the area and craving Thai food (as usual) Prices were really good for thai food. It's a small restaurant next to Raley's that's hard to miss, since it's in a strip mall, and you can tell it's family owned. What my friend and I got: -Papaya Salad -Larb Salad with chicken -Angel Wings -Fried banana with ice cream -Thai iced tea They were very accommodating when I informed them I had a peanut allergy, and extremely polite (saying 'thank you' when they put the plates down!). The salads were really fresh and the angel wings were 'mmmazing: nice and crunchy and moist inside, and the sauce (which usually has peanuts but they took out for me) was perfect for it. The larb salad was more meat than greens, which I wasn't used to, but it was fresh and flavorful, and had enough for leftovers (yesssss). Thai iced tea was standard, and the fried banana was perfect and hot and crunchy (with batter) with some chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream. So this is by far my most favorite thai restaurant in the tri-city area. The service is little slow during lunch so it would be best to come here for dinner. The Pad See Ew (hot) is amazing. The best flat-noodles that i've ever had. The thai basil flavor is a little strong though...a friend of mine thought i tasted a little like licorice. The Tom Yum Gow soup is absolutely delicious. If you have a cold or a blocked nose, get this soup (make it spicy) and your cold will be gone in a flash. I love the Vegetarian Fresh Rolls, they are made of rice paper, mint, tofu and the clean noodles served with an extra-peanutty peanut sauce. I LOVE THESE THINGS! The Thai Iced Tea and the Coconut Juice (it actually has real coconut!) are yummy. The service is great during dinner time but that could just be because they know me since i've been going there ever since they opened. This restaurant would also be a very good takeout option...they usually get your order ready within 15-20 minutes. The atmosphere is really good for a strip mall. Decorated in very simpe neutral tones and the chairs are fairly comfortable. They also have a VERY clean bathroom which is always a plus. Also, just FYI...they only serve wine and beer. So hard-alcoholics should stay home if they feel like they want to do some drinking! :) read more

I'm SOOOO lucky to live and work so close to such a great Thai place! I usually come here for their lunch specials($6-$7) during the weekdays. Their lunch special menu contains about 12 items to choose from and includes a selection of their most popular dishes served with rice. Soup is also included in the lunch special. This place is pretty popular in our area so there might be a wait if you arrive in the middle of lunchtime. With that said, you can also expect pretty slow service since they're also usually short-staffed. That's their only downfall. Otherwise, their Pad Thai with prawns is a MUST and their Panang Chicken is my absolute favorite. Don't forget the thai iced tea! read more

We were 1 of 3 tables at 5:45 and they sat us at thee one table of 18 available.. without silverware set up. The waiter pillaged the neighboring table for settings. Then immediately after we ordered he took our plates away (weren't hungry enough for appetizers) Then he took napkins from the neighboring table to bring us. Food came quickly. As we were eating waiters came by no less than three times to bungling with the next table (2 inches from us). No one asked us how was the food. When we finished, no one cleared our plates or refilled waters. We waited over ten minutes. During which time several more diners arrived. When a waiter cane to neurotically arrange a napkin at table 2inches away, I asked him to clear our plates with the spit out inedible tough beef on them. He did, but only after folding three more napkins. Priorities! The bald headed waiter and the other guy didn't appear to be aware of customer experience at all. After we paid, a really sweet young lady did refill our waters. Not a terrible place. If needed I'd eat there again and I would stick with the chicken. But I would not go out of my way. One of the better Thai places around. The Pad Thai was goooood. I also ordered a beef dish that I don't remember the name of. When they asked me how hot I wanted it, I said "Thai hot". The waitress smiled and asked me if I was sure and I said "yes". Well, "Thai hot" varies from store to store. It was HooooooooooT! Don't get me wrong, I finally got what I asked for - some really spicy food! If you love *hot*, you'll get what you ask for and will definitely like it. Inconsistency is the key word. The first time I came here I loved this place. The food is excellent and the service was exceptional. The food has remained excellent but the service is non-existent. They need to hire more waiters. If you ever are waited on by an old bald man; just run! No need to waste time. The last two times I went in; they were short-staffed. It can get busy on weekend nights and Saturday seems to be the busiest night of the week. They forget your order and are not even apologetic about it. The excuse he gave me was they were busy. Busy doesn't explain why the couple that came in after us received their order before us. Instead of admitting that he forgot; he asked us if we wanted to cancel our order. When he said this the other waiter chimed in; "Cancelling. You want to cancel?" Hey bub; what's the rush in cancelling the order? I was furious and told them that clearly they still had not started on my order and were not making any effort to work with me. They have an issue with cleanliness as well. Food was OK and service was good. Went w/GF for lunch the other day. Not very busy. So, service was pretty good. But they did not have Pad Thai for a lunch-special choice (wtf?). You could only order it a la carte. I have NEVER been to a Thai restaurant not having Pad Thai on the luncheon menu? It's only (one of) the most popular dishes for Thai food and NO luncheon special? I ordered a la carte. It was $1 more than the lunch specials but you actually got less choice of food (no rice, no soup,etc.)? Both dishes we ordered were good (tasting). Service was good (since they served us tap water - tepid, I asked for some ice and they did accommodate that). I had the pad thai (regular order). I ordered it "hot" and it was. Mt GF ordered the pad see ew, which she said was good. I finished her broccoli. I marked off 3-stars for not having Pad Thai on the luncheon menu. I believe not having it on the luncheon menu is tantamount to not having cheeseburgers on the menu at a diner. Same diff. IMO. read more

I love Thai food. I'm crazy for satay. So as you might as well assume, I consume a large quantity (and varieties) of satay. Their satay satisfies my life-long craving for Thai food and their radna (apologies for any spelling mistakes) is fantastically delicious. There is nothing better than fat, chewy noodles doused in a thick bath of gravy with a nice side of chicken and broccoli mixed in. Also if I wasn't trying to decrease the amount of sugar intake I consume everyday, I would love a thai tea. Whenever I have a craving for Thai food, I would come here. I would usually order the crab fried rice, pad thai and chicken satay. This place has the best crab fried rice I've ever tasted. One time, I tried placing an order of their crab fried rice in a party tray. Unfortunately, the guy who picked up the phone could not answer any of my questions. I got a little frustrated and decided to cook it myself instead. One evening, I decided to order dinner from here (it was just a couple doors down from my son's tutoring classl). This old man that works here as a waiter was so nice. After I paid for my order (food plus drinks), he helped me carry the food to my car, which I told him that I can handle it. Throughout the whole experience that night, he keeps saying "Yes, mam. Thank you man". I've never experienced that before. Excellent customer service! read more

Normally, Simply Thai does not disappoint. However, tonight we ordered the duck curry and the ingredients were most unimpressive. There were about 5 pieces of duck skin with all the fat attached and no meat. Just skin and fat. I didn't have any duck meat in my three servings of curry, and my mom found around 2 thin slivers of it. In addition to the duck skin, there were several chunks of pineapple (pineapple?!) and some red peppers and green peppers. The taste of the curry is good, but the ingredients were definitely lacking. The Angel wings (stuffed chicken wings) were good, as were the prawns we got and the papaya salad. But the main attraction was definitely anticlimactic. So sad to have to give this place 3 stars. read more

Lunch specials- If you want to try with reasonable pocket size then try the lunch specials. But yeah you have to come between Monday to Friday only. 2. Vegetarian section and ability to customized on request- If you want to avoid regular fried spring rolls then give it try to 'V. Fresh Rolls'. For example, they listen if you want certain types of veggies in different portions. 3. Very good service - I liked the brown rice they offer. So I asked the server where to get it. Came out here with my cousin for lunch. It was the first for the both of us to this restaurant. We walked in and it wasn't crowded. Nice decor. We grab the table by the window and were our waiter was nice and pleasant. We both shared the Som Tum salad, which is the shredded green papaya salad with green bean, shrimp, tomato, roasted peanuts, and chili tossed with lime juice. It was supposed to be "fresh" but it looked like the papaya was sitting in the "juices" for some time. The papaya looked a bit macerated and it was served to us with a bit watery. Also, there was a white gray hair sticking out. I quickly pulled it out knowing if I brought to my cousin's attention she would freak out. She saw me and asked me what it was and I said it was lint. So cousin if you are reading this. Sorry. Anyway. I had the sweet and sour prawns lunch special, which came with white rice, salad with peanut dressing, spring roll, and a sweet/sour soup. Overall, it was decent, but it did not leave me wanting more with each bite. So you can say I was a bit disappointed. I felt the serving size was a bit small compared to the amount of rice what was on the dish. I guess that explains why the sweet and sour prawns were served in a small dish instead on the plate.... to hide the fact that there was only 5 small shrimps in a pool of watery sweet/sour broth. As for the rest of the items of my plate, the iceberg lettuce that was served to me was ridiculous. What was on my plate was literally 3-4 one-inch CUBES of the inner core of the head of lettuce. The spring roll, was meh. I've had better. Tasted like it was purchased from a grocery store rather than made fresh. My cousin had the pad see ew. She shared a bit of her dish with me and it was kinda blah. The flavors where a bit bland and I wish it had more of a bite to it. So overall, I give this place two stars. Located in a shopping center, this place does have a nice decor and ambiance to it that could lend itself to a nice semi-casual date spot. Servers were very nice and helpful. The food itself was pretty spicy, so make sure you have a high tolerance for spice if you are going to eat the "hot" or "thai hot" versions of their dishes. On my particular meal we had Gai Pad Nor Mai and Pad Kee Mow (vegetarian). Unfortunately today they did not have the large flat noodles for the Pad Kee Mow, so they used thin egg noodles,I didn't feel like it was too much of an issue. The Gai Pad Nor Mai was pretty spicy, however I was a little disappointed that the bamboo shoots were not crispy but rather soft. I am not really sure what a true dish should feature, so I'll leave that to your discretion. The Pad Kee Mow was pretty good as well, though it did seem a bit dry. The vegetables on this dish were cooked well and were crispy and crunchy when bit into. For desert we finished up with coconut ice cream. Nothing too fancy, but it served us well to get the heat down in our mouths. Overall Simply Thai is a solid Thai restaurant that has a decent ambiance and decor. The food however is not out-of-this-world great, but it is solid choice. read more

This is the best place to go in the east bay/ Fremont/Union City area. The food presentation is excellent. Simply Thai strikes a good balance between being too spicy or too mild. Some Thai restaurants fall under one extreme (too spicy + lots of seasoning) or the other (ultra mild to the point it's identical to chinese food). The chefs do a great job on the "pillars" of Thai food: Tom yum, Pad thai, Pad se-ew, panang curry, Tod mun fishcakes It has the best decor of any Thai restaurant in the Fremont section of the east bay, and ranks high among the places I've been to in the bay area. The location isn't very good as it's in a strip mall next to a Raley's. If you sit by the window, it's a clear view of the Raley's parking lot. Consistently good thai food. I've been going to this place for an average of almost 3 times a week for the past year and I can say this is the spot for good thai food. You can't go wrong here. I tried several of their dishes and haven't been disappointed with many. My all time favorite is Cashew Nut Chicken and this place is one of the best for it. You get a great portion as well. The staff is also super friendly and they know you by name. They are opened later than most restaurants and they don't treat their customers like idiots with the portion size....like a certain thai restaurant located across the street. This restaurant is simply... simple. The pad thai wasn't good at all, after a few bites i got sick of the sauce (too sweet). The noodles were hard and didn't taste good (tasted like cheap packaged noodles). IMO it tasted like microwavable pad thai. Also the shrimps were frozen, not fresh. The spicy fried rice with chicken was too simple, tasted like only rice and oil with some chicken and bell peppers. This restaurant is lacking flavor, but its decent for americanized thai food, nothing special. I think i'll stick to sala thai from now on. Nice server and good service.
