If you want horrible tasting food, with portions that won't satisfy your hunger then this is the place to to go. I ordered BBQ chicken, broccoli chicken and fried catfish to go. I was really surprised when I got home and opened up my food. The portions were so small that it was just enough for one person and I had ordered 3 dishes for 3 people. I paid $32.00 for these 3 dishes and then had to go to Popeyes to get some more food as what they gave us was ridonkulous. I thought ok since the portions are so small then the taste would be amazing, but boy was I wrong. The broccoli chicken had a really bad smell to it, the BBQ chicken was dry and very rubbery you couldn't even chew it, it was so bad, the fried catfish was just decent but more then half the portion of this dish was some leafy inedible stuff. The food is (usually) good and cheap. People who work there are nice. However, they are ALWAYS horribly understaffed. I work nearby, and stopped going there about a year ago because of this. Gave it a try again today. Sorry I did. Tried to call in a take-out order, but they don't answer the phone, just like before. Went in person, ordered at register, was told it would take about 10 minutes. After sitting there for half an hour, walked back up to register, person is confused about what is what, but I help her figure out the #3 lunch special that has been sitting there for who knows how long is mine. Get back to my office and the order contains just dry chicken in a plastic container. No sauce, nothing else. Also, it's cold, but that is kind of beside the point. Threw it away. So I guess now in addition to being short-staffed on the front of house side, they are so frantic in the kitchen that they are not completing preparation of the food before trying to serve it. All restaurants struggle with staffing. However, when they are only half full like they were today, and still so busy they can't answer the phone to take orders, and providing service so bad that they are losing customers - like they lost me for good today - so they don't have to hire one more person, I just wonder what in the world the owner is thinking. read more

Last couple times have been horrible. During COVID the lady demanded a tip as I was reaching in my wallet to tip her cash by. And the food quality went down as well my family had to throw away all their food. On my last visit my bill was 32 dollars and I handed her 40 dollars and she pointed at my bag and said ok thank you.... Excuse me but I decide how much I am going to tip you. I wonder how many customers she takes advantage of like this. On top of that she has attitude every time I go and is stingy with the chili. My wife and I came here on our second or third date and I haven't been back in over five years. On our recent vist, we ended up on a bit of a wild goose chase because she said she wanted to go to that one Thai restaurant that is "comfy." Hmmm...aren't they all comfy?? The first place that I drove to was (according to Carrie) an uncomfy Thai spot across town in Fremont. After a few minutes of intense Yelp app searching, I finally realized the comfy spot that she was talking about! We kept the meal super simple and shared a bowl of soup and a curry dish. Tom kha gai soup was exactly what I was looking for on a cold night. The medium spiciness level that we ordered was perfect for my spice needs and it came packed with pieces of chicken and mushrooms. For our curry we went with Kang Khew-Whan Puck. (#106 on the menu) This dish is a very tasty combo of mixed veggies, coconut milk and green curry. Nothing like lots of eggplant simmered in a tasty curry! I definitely recommend this dish if you're looking for a flavorful veggie entree. We topped the meal off with a Thai classic, sticky rice and mango. A perfect sweet treat to cut the spice of the soup and curry. Is this place more comfy than the average Thai restaurant? Jury's still out on that one. I do know that in the five years since my last visit, there's been no drop in the quality of their food. Service was also great as well. Ok, so here's the thing with Simply Thai. When it first opened, my coworkers and I frequented this place three or four times. The noodles here are great. The Tom Yum soup here is great. The appetizers are great. Presentation is clean, prices decent, portions good. But the past couple times we came, my coworkers got food poisoning. One of my coworkers was out for almost a week (he ordered some kind of fried rice dish). That same day, I felt really weird - my stomach was burning and I just didn't feel right. Didn't really get "sick" though. The next time we went, my coworker was sick for a day (BBQ chicken). His dish looked old and dry. Now that this place is really busy at lunch, the service is not good (we had to remind them of our drinks and they served other people first even though we had been sitting there for awhile), and the food sometimes leaves a little funky feeling after you finish your meal. Their beef dishes are good, however, when they say it comes with bamboo shoots or green peppers, think 4 tiny pieces of beef, and 1000 slices of green peppers and bamboo shoots. So why the four stars? This is ONLY for the Thai iced tea, Tom Yum soup, noodles (drunken noodles, Pad Thai, Pad See Ew, etc), and delicious desserts all relative to the decent prices of the food. Be careful with anything else. Also, they upped their spice levels so mild should be sufficient if you like spicy but can't totally handle it. read more

Let me start off by saying the food is delicious! I usually go to Sala Thai but I almost think the food is way better. I came here tonight (Friday night) during prime dinner time. If you have places to go and people to see don't come here during prime hours. Our food came out one by one and we kept asking for it. The service is extremely slow. We had to insist on getting refills. It was a full restaurant but not enough servers. The servers were basically running around. Our table was basically ignored. We made sure to order our dessert when the last dinner item was delivered to our table so that it would give them enough time to give it to us. When time came, they never put in our dessert order so we had to wait even longer. I would suggest maybe getting take out or coming during none busy hours. Otherwise food is yummy. I really liked the decor and the service. So why 2 stars, you might ask. The food! The food was not that good. The first time I went there, I got the pad thai take out which was average fare. The second time, I went there for a sit down dinner and was totally disappointed. The chicken tasted rubbery and chewy in all the dishes. The food here is decent, but missing a few authentic ingredients, portions are a bit small for the price they charge compared to other Thai restaurants. The ambiance here is definitely great, modern interior and decor. The only server they had was friendly, but service was not so great. I can understand it was a full house, but c'mon stop being cheap and hire more staff. It shouldn't take 30 minutes to get the bill, seriously. This technically gets a 4.5 for me. Not only is this close to my house which is a perk, but the service is sooo friendly! There isn't many people working there so if you catch them at a busy time you could be waiting for a while, but it's worth it. The dishes are a great portion size for 2-4 people depending on how hungry you are and every dish I've tried there has been great. I love their Red and Yellow Curry Chicken, spicy fried rice, fried spring rolls, Pad Thai, and the Pork or Chicken (with bamboo shoots, basil, and peppers). This place sucks. And I mean service wise. Lets see there were empty tables available and my friend and I waited 15 min to be seated. Then, another 15 or so min to get our order taken. Then another 10 min to get our food and when we got our food it wasn't what we ordered. We asked for lemons on the side and I mean that as in plural. And we got ONE goddamn LIME. Wrong fruit and wrong quantity. Wrong service. I wanted to try this place since its soo close to my house but I was def. not impressed. The waitress was a snob too. Good and quick lunch option in Newark. When I was still working in Newark, I used to come to Simply Thai at least once a week. Thanks to my friend Maureen E. for the taking me the first time. It's easy and it's quick, exactly how I like it when I'm slammed with work. Just like how Winnie G.'s review states, "Simply Thai was simply simple," in a good way. It's got a good lunch menu. The entrees come with salad in peanut sauce, white rice or brown rice, one crispy fried egg roll, and soup. You can also choose your level of spiciness, so if you can't take the heat, then go with mild. All for about $9, which is not bad. My favorite is Penang Curry, and you can select your choice protein. The quality is just as I expect for a quick lunch. While it's nothing spectacular, it's also nothing short of goodness. My only complaint is that during my last visit, my beef was a little over cooked. My TIP to you, it gets very busy on Fridays during lunch, come early. read more

Went here for lunch with a co-worker today. Yum! I had the chicken panang curry lunch special with a Thai Iced Tea. The taste and spice was just perfect and the included more chicken than other places I've been. And their peanut sauce is super good! The lunch portions are really decent. The Thai Iced Tea was delicious but kind of small in comparison to what I'm used to. :( Service was prompt in the beginning, but when it came to getting out check, we couldn't seem to find anyone. :( I would come back for sure! read more

They sure did hire a good interior decorator here. The dining area is really well done and feels fancy but you know it's not really that hoity-toity when it's a restaurant in a strip mall. For me, that's a win-win situation - easy parking and a nice atmosphere. The Thai eggrolls are great appetizers. We had the angel wings too once but weren't that thrilled with them. Our favorites are the Pad Kee Mao (get it spicy and it's oh so good!) and the green curry. The Pad Thai is okay too. Food is served on these nice white plates (a la Crate and Barrel, perhaps?) and I used to think that the portions seemed small compared to other restaurants'. Actually, I think they may have the portions thing down right... we usually don't have to leave here with a doggie bag. read more

Been here twice. First time Sunday lunch: Everything was GREAT! Pad Thai was 5 stars. We both thought it was one of the best Pad Thai ever. Angel Wings - 3 Stars, it wasn't bad just a little dry Seafood coconut soup - 4 stars. The seafood was a little bit over cooked. Thai Tea - 4 stars, I am not an expert on what Thai tea should taste like but I just know I've had better. The tea flavor was a bit off. Friend banana and ice cream was perfectly fried! 5 stars again! Service - 4 stars. Friendly and semi attentive. 2nd time came here dinner time. The girl waitress there gave me a dirty look. Then she gave us snobby looks through out & NEVER a smile but she smiled at the other customers. In our mind was like WHAT DA F! We always say thank you and please so #!$!@%@! Thank gawd we got another waiter to serve us! We ordered some of the same food like pad thai & seafood w/ basil & chili sauce. This time both came out BLAH which shows the food being inconsistent. NOT a good sign. Pineapple fried rice, The flavor was good but they used dark meat. I really dislike dark meat. Food is decent. Had yum nur and pad kapow, not bad, but I've had much much better! Small portions. I once got take out from here and there was a blue rubber band in my tom kha. The service is good. I'm in the restaurant now and freezing my butt off! It's like they're trying to save money on heating or something! There's a ton of Thai places around the area.... however, this is one of the better ones. I usually come in for lunch with co-workers so I'm usually with a larger group. Even though the place is on the small side, they are very quick to accommodate as best they can. The menu has the standard Thai selection... but I usually stick to the lunch specials since they include steamed rice, soup, salad, and a spring roll. So far, everything I've tried here has been great. I'm really digging the curries. PRO TIP: If you go here for lunch, it's usually packed... any day of the work week. Come in around 11:30 to beat the rush. Otherwise, you may have to wait a while to get seated. read more

My co workers and I find ourselves at Simply Thai quiet often. Let me just start off by saying that the food is great and prices are reasonable. I always order yellow curry chicken with brown rice. Servings are decent size, for me. However, when it comes to service, please note to not have high expectations. First, if you go by here during lunch rush on Monday - Friday, you might want to make sure that you are there before noon. Also, don't expect to get refills or any type of service at your table. You will only see your waiter when it is time to order and time to pay. Often times, I find myself paying at the register because they forget to come back to pick up the bill. We had takeout from this place reading all these reviews,and we didn't want to drive all the way to our favorite , Sala Thai. We had : fresh spring rolls, chicken satay, chicken curry (yellow),and a sauteed eggplant chicken dish. The flavors were really good - so 2 stars for that But the meats :uggh!!! After a long day of driving around contra costa county, my friend Ade and I finally headed towards Fremont and we were both hungry...so we thought about thai. And I knew that there was another place to find thai in Newark that we hadn't tried. So, I Yelp'd Thai and was reminded that it was Simply Thai to go to... Not only is the food delicious, the atmosphere is enhanced by the wonderful mystical music playing in the background. The decor is simple and shows warmth you don't find in most strip mall restaurants (including Banh Thai in Fremont). The only thing I didn't like is the vinyl tablecloths...especially because we were hot and sticky from being in a convertible all day. On to the food...we chose some basic dishes: Tom Kha Gai, Panang Beef curry and combination Pad Thai (tofu, prawns, chicken--good), figuring if they can make these right, we're coming back to try other stuff. The soup was tasty and had a good amount of chicken and mushrooms; curry was as promised, although served on a plate making it somewhat difficult to scoop the curry onto the rice. The pad thai was excellent full of flavor and chock full of the combination of proteins. Service was attentive (water refills a plenty) until it came time to clear our plates and ask if we wanted dessert or our check. The restaurant was relatively full, but not so much that we should be ignored for a full fifteen minutes. Good company always solves that problem, but just something to be aware of... Not my first visit to Simply Thai, but might be my last. There are just too many Thai places in this area. First off... the food isn't bad. The thing that turned me off the most this last time was getting the roasted duck curry, and finding feathers still stuck on the duck skin. Not little thin ones... we're talking huge, thick feathers, like they totally missed a spot. Not only while the duck was being plucked, but before they started cooking the duck... how did you miss that?! Ew, gross... totally didn't wanna eat that dish anymore. The floors were sticky. Like, incredibly sticky all the way through. I've never experienced such stickiness even in the most hole-in-a-wally restaurants. Service was absolutely terrible. There was one lady running around while our "server" (the one who just took our order) was sitting at a table counting tips. The owner, presumably, was sitting at another table with a friend just chilling while our water glasses remained empty. That's my absolute pet peeve at a restaurant. This is your restaurant. You are the owner/manager. You have as much responsibility to take care of your customers as your servers, if not more. All of those things just irked me, so I probably won't be back. read more
