    Review Highlights - Simply Supper

Our grocery bills are significantly lower now, our variety of meals at home is way higher, and we order out way less often.

We've also almost ate all the meat before rice was provided. Regardless, the food was still good. Ordered fried chicken, spicy pork belly, corn cheese and more and they all tasted great. Ambiance was same as usual. Clean and same with the washrooms

My friend and I came here for dinner before going to a show. I was looking at restaurants along our…read moreroute and Hanjan seemed like a great option. We dined on a Friday around 6pm. The space inside was nice and much bigger than it looked outside. There were a few diners when we got there, but still plenty of seating. We were seated, given the menus, and water (including a jug for the table, which I appreciated). The server told us that when we're ready to order to press the button on the side of the table. I love when restaurants do that. I ordered the Hanip to drink, which is a seasonal tea beverage, a non alcoholic type cocktail. I got the Japchae, which is a bowl of Japchae (glass noodles), beef bulgogi, spinach, carrots, onions with a shitake soy dressing. My friend got a coke and the Donkas, a breaded pork cutlet with a cabbage slaw. It also came with ketchup and bbq sauce on the side. Our food came out very fast; I don't think we waited more than 8 minutes, but our drinks hadn't arrived and the server said they'd be on the way. With our meals they brought out a small side of vegetables that included kimchi, bean spouts, radish (may have been daikon) with this delicious sauce, and mashed potatoes, plus a side of steamed rice. I'm not sure if the veggies and rice were for my meal or my friend's or for the table, but we both enjoyed it. I really liked the radish dish. Our meals were also delicious. My friend's pork cutlet was massive and she said it was really good. I loved the Japchae, it was savoury and comforting. I had been debating about ordering one of the full vegetable dishes like the eggplant or cucumber salad, but the serving sizes are decent and I wasn't hungry. The downside was they forgot about our drinks. I kept waiting and finally partway through our meal I pressed the button and asked about our drinks, and they had completely forgotten. The server (a different one from before) apologized. My friend's coke came out right after that and my drink took a few minutes to make. I do understand things get missed (I've worked in restaurants before), but it also wasn't very busy. So I can't give Hanjan 5-stars because of this but it was still a really meal. Both my friend and I said we'd go back again.

I took the time to add the business as this particular location was not listed on yelp, I did not want to lump it with another location and it's something I am passionate that I wanted to share my awful experience. I travel and eat out a lot and tend to bring my own container and utensils and coffee mug to help the environment and reduce wastage something I try to spread along with friends and colleagues. I was drawn to their make your own pasta station, which i had actually gone back to retrieve my own container so I could order one of their pasta when I found out the guy behind the pasta counter, Richard is his name according to the cashier refused to put the pasta in my container stating "health regulations" I had no idea it was a thing. I had written to Food inspections Canada and awaiting their response. I dedicate my lifestyle to reducing waste and try my very best to honour 0 plastic usage. I appreciate the containers their store offers with biodegradable paper options in their hot and cold stations. The store also have a special pricing for bring your own cup at the coffee and tea station. Furthermore, upon taking my bowl of pasta which he insisted slapping on a clear pasta lid I told him no he persisted as he says that's how I have to use to pay? Can't he just hand me a price sticker or just apply it to the side of the bowl? The attitude and rudeness will ensure I will not visit again. I also took the time to comment on their website and I got this response (see photo attached) I get it's in the discretion of business's own rights to do whatever they want, but don't use some sort of health regulation dismiss someone who is trying to save the planet by taking the time to bring in their own containers. There are so many food & beverage options, with this kind of attitude, this will ensure I nor my colleagues won't be visiting it ever again.

Compared to the horrid rethermalized slop or fast food served in hospital cafeterias, Olly's offers some fresh, healthy, reasonably priced and made to order foods. Why isn't this offered in the hospital?!? Surely the client base is just as large, if not larger, at UAH or RAH! Anyhow, although Olly's has recently cut back on some of their selection, they still serve up some tasty and affordable food. If you work in the area and need breakfast or lunch, skip the fast food or the $15+ sandwich and head to Olly's! They have a great selection from a salad bar and hot self-serve (cost based on weight) to made-to-order sammies and ready to go full meals. There's even little containers of snacks and treats, like hummus, chocolates, veggies & dip, chips, jujubes - it's like a combo cafeteria and convenience store. Very helpful for the busy downtown worker, whether it's a meal or just snacks for an informal meeting. The $2.19 made-to-order breakfast sandwich is an absolute steal given almost all the toppings (except for bacon & cheese) are free, up to 4 selections. Try to get that at Timmy's or Subway! I also love that the food is discounted on Friday afternoon after about 1p.m. My spouse always picks up 2-for-1 soup or entrees for me to take for my weekend night shifts, and my friend who lives on a fixed income finds this is a great way to get some healthy meals that are within his budget. The entrees themselves are easily big enough for two meals - at $8 each and 2 for 1, that's $2 a meal. Wow. Heck of a deal for homemade food. Plus the head chef is a great guy, so if you like a particular dish, he might just tip you off as to when they will next make it, or make it part of their regular offerings. We really need this kind of food service in the front lines of healthcare! If the quality of the food that is served to patients was even close to the food they serve at Olly's, patient outcomes would undoubtedly be better. That's some real food for thought.

It's located in Whitemud Crossing which is the same strip mall as the Public Library is located except Hungry Birds is on the opposite side as the library. There are two or three tables but this is clearly a takeout café. The owner greeted us as we arrived and then explained how the menu worked. There are noodle bowls, grilled wraps, soups and salads. We opted for the noodle bowls. He then asked what size (small, medium and large). Then we chose the vegetables and meat. I had the marinated beef and my wife had the chicken. We had a choice of two types of noodles to select from or rice. Finally he asks what kind of sauce and whether or not you want cheese on top; the cheese is an add on. We also ordered a bowl of Wicked Thai Soup. I was impressed that he put the soup into a pot to heat it up rather than just scooping it directly from the soup pot. This ensured that it was hot . Once we got home we found all of our orders were quite hot. More importantly we all agreed that the noodle bowls were delicious and for the most part, nutritious. This was my first visit to Hungry Birds but it won't be my last visit. I have no problem giving them four stars.

Good thing that I had about ten minutes to wait for service with nobody around me because the menu is not clear cut at all and I had the preamble to read on the menu, it is one of those menus where you design your salad. But how stupid can it get in a fast food joint to have the ill consideration of having a six step procedure for a customer where you pick this and then pick that and then at one of the steps you then have to the choice of three items out of about 21 choppings that you need to read. It is just too much to read in one go and I had nobody to contend with waiting behind me! So, I just chose one of the pre-chef designed salads- the Southwest which consisted of grilled chicken, romaine lettuce, cherry tomatoes, black bean corn salsa , peppers, cheddar and pita chips with Chipotle Lime Citrus dressing. What I received was a dog's breakfast: note the photo. I had one 'old cherry tomatoe', the lettuce was wilted, the grilled chicken tasted liked lard. This salad was disgusting! And what really choked me was the price: over $14.00 for this Southwest salad and one bottle of water!!!! The two guys that were working in the facility could have cared less that I was standing in line waiting and waiting to be served until I approached them and asked whether they were still open and they said, Yes, until 6 pm. Therefore, they had plenty of time to treat me as a valued customer. I had the sense that they were only concerned about their prepatory work for the next day and found that I as a single consumer was a nuisance to stop their work and serve. And it showed in the garbage that they threw in the bowl and sold to me. I will never go back to this place and do not recommend it, too bad because I love good quality healthy food and this is not the place to find it!

They have a decent sized menu of salads, a couple of sandwiches and a soup or two giving people the healthy option of fiber and vitamins for lunch. I had a full size of the Pegasus salad. As the name suggests, it has a Greek influence to it, almost like a greeny version of a Greek salad. Yes, the salad had a lot of romaine lettuce in it and yes, it was filling. I agree with Deana M.'s review that they should have had a little less of the green, but I quite enjoyed the salad and perhaps wouldn't have thought of this had I not read Deana's review. The crisp pita chip given with their salads was delicious by itself and also went well when crumbled into the salad. I wish the feta cheese was a bit more chunky rather than small and nearly uniformly distributed in every bite. Many people like it in a uniform manner, but there's something about biting into a large chunk of feta - I don't know why, I just prefer that. All things said though, I did enjoy the salad a lot without leaving too much to complain about. It is certainly worth the $10.50 they charge for it and being that it has protein packed in it too (grilled chicken was my poison), it makes for a delicious, healthy, fibrous and filling meal. The "chopped water" (see pictures) wasn't as good as it looked. It's basically water with a few pieces of watermelon and canned mandarin oranges in it to infuse flavor. I guess I was a bit disappointed with their use of canned fruit, especially given that it's a fresh salad place and it's summer! Perhaps their salads that have orange in them, also use canned orange. For a $1.50 I wasn't very disappointed with the chopped water, but might not get it again. We went there rather late in the afternoon and were among the few people who were actually there. Being that it's in a mall, it has a very open space to it without any doors or any sort of confinement, making it a good vantage point for people watching. Reasonable amount of seating is available and the ambience is generally quite fresh and inviting.
