First off, I waited and waited and waited...then finally walked around the counter where two of the chefs (cooks...) were doing their prep work and asked if they were still open and one of the chefs said, 'Yes'. Good thing that I had about ten minutes to wait for service with nobody around me because the menu is not clear cut at all and I had the preamble to read on the menu, it is one of those menus where you design your salad. But how stupid can it get in a fast food joint to have the ill consideration of having a six step procedure for a customer where you pick this and then pick that and then at one of the steps you then have to the choice of three items out of about 21 choppings that you need to read. It is just too much to read in one go and I had nobody to contend with waiting behind me! So, I just chose one of the pre-chef designed salads- the Southwest which consisted of grilled chicken, romaine lettuce, cherry tomatoes, black bean corn salsa , peppers, cheddar and pita chips with Chipotle Lime Citrus dressing. What I received was a dog's breakfast: note the photo. I had one 'old cherry tomatoe', the lettuce was wilted, the grilled chicken tasted liked lard. This salad was disgusting! And what really choked me was the price: over $14.00 for this Southwest salad and one bottle of water!!!! The two guys that were working in the facility could have cared less that I was standing in line waiting and waiting to be served until I approached them and asked whether they were still open and they said, Yes, until 6 pm. Therefore, they had plenty of time to treat me as a valued customer. I had the sense that they were only concerned about their prepatory work for the next day and found that I as a single consumer was a nuisance to stop their work and serve. And it showed in the garbage that they threw in the bowl and sold to me. I will never go back to this place and do not recommend it, too bad because I love good quality healthy food and this is not the place to find it! read more

Chopped Leaf is a decent lunch option for downtown office goers and might actually give Sunterra a fight for its money, in terms of To-Go food. They have a decent sized menu of salads, a couple of sandwiches and a soup or two giving people the healthy option of fiber and vitamins for lunch. I had a full size of the Pegasus salad. As the name suggests, it has a Greek influence to it, almost like a greeny version of a Greek salad. Yes, the salad had a lot of romaine lettuce in it and yes, it was filling. I agree with Deana M.'s review that they should have had a little less of the green, but I quite enjoyed the salad and perhaps wouldn't have thought of this had I not read Deana's review. The crisp pita chip given with their salads was delicious by itself and also went well when crumbled into the salad. I wish the feta cheese was a bit more chunky rather than small and nearly uniformly distributed in every bite. Many people like it in a uniform manner, but there's something about biting into a large chunk of feta - I don't know why, I just prefer that. All things said though, I did enjoy the salad a lot without leaving too much to complain about. It is certainly worth the $10.50 they charge for it and being that it has protein packed in it too (grilled chicken was my poison), it makes for a delicious, healthy, fibrous and filling meal. The "chopped water" (see pictures) wasn't as good as it looked. It's basically water with a few pieces of watermelon and canned mandarin oranges in it to infuse flavor. I guess I was a bit disappointed with their use of canned fruit, especially given that it's a fresh salad place and it's summer! Perhaps their salads that have orange in them, also use canned orange. For a $1.50 I wasn't very disappointed with the chopped water, but might not get it again. We went there rather late in the afternoon and were among the few people who were actually there. Being that it's in a mall, it has a very open space to it without any doors or any sort of confinement, making it a good vantage point for people watching. I love chopped leaf salads. They're really quite delicious! Pick a salad, a size and choose to add a protein (if you so desire) and there you have a good meal. It fills a need, and sometimes it's just way easier to eat here than it is to pack a good nutritious salad in a work lunch. The flavoured water is also a pretty nice touch. I don't think other shops in Commerce Place offer that. The seating area is small but good and it's nice to eat lunch out of real dishes even at a quick service place like this one. read more

nom nom nom nom nom! Now that I'm back downtown, I was SO happy to find a Chopped Leaf below Sunterra. I love how open this location is. You don't feel cramped at all, and even at 12:20 I managed to find a spot to sit and eat very quickly. the young lady at the counter seemed a little grumpy when I first walked up. But once I pointed out that she forgot to charge me for my drink she seemed to snap out of it and we laughed about the oversight. The food was prepared quickly and everything tasted PERFECT. One major difference I noticed between this location and my usual one on Gateway is that the other one only gives you 3 croutons for your soup... The downtown location gives you significantly more. the only reason that I can't go to 5 stars... is that the drink cooler is quite a ways away from the till. So when you get up there to order, if you realize you want a drink, you have to walk aaaalllll the way over there and back. first world problems, right? If you haven't tried it, I strongly STRONGLY recommend the Creamy Tomato Soup. Actually, I INSIST that you try it. It is so perfect on a chilly Edmonton lunch break. read more

Easily my favorite lunch spot downtown. Though it hasn't been open for very long, I've been going here almost every day for lunch. For their salads, I've tried: The Signature salad, which is excellent, though you might want to keep your distance from people afterward due to the red onions in it. The Spa salad, which has tuna in it - not a big tuna fan, but it was still very good. The Caesar salad, which isn't the best I've ever had, but is what I get most often (big caesar salad fan!). My only complaint with it is that it has bacon bits which tend to congregate near the bottom of the bowl, making the last few bites a bit too salty for my liking. Their soups tend to be decent to excellent, and I almost always get one with my salad. They also have "chopped water," which is basically water with some fruit in it. It's decent, though not particularly flavorful. I've tried it once and can't see myself paying for it in the future - on Saturdays it's free with a salad though, and there are free refills every day, making it a reasonable deal. I have had one bad experience, when I found a chunk of hard plastic in my salad. I couldn't stick around to chat with the staff about it, but I'll be more cautious in the future. They have a curiously large number of staff, and overall they're probably the friendliest I've encountered at a downtown lunch spot. They're not all perfect, but some of them really put in some extra effort to make this a very comfortable place for a quick lunch. read more

I was eager to try this place as I am always looking for healthy and fast food options when eating out but after my experience today I wish I had walked right past this place. I decided on a BBQ chicken quesadilla which set me back $9.50 and a bottle of iced tea for $2.50. I was a little bit surprised at the price but I know it usually costs a little more to eat healthy then what you would pay eating junk at Mcdonalds. I went to the other side of the counter to wait for my food and as time wore on I got to wondering if they had forgotten my order in the midst of making salads for the two other women who had been waiting behind me. Finally out came my quesadilla and I immediately thought it looked a little skimpy on filling. Upon sitting down and taking my first few bites my fears were confirmed when all I could taste was mostly the BBQ sauce and all I found was a few tiny chicken pieces after opening the thing up to look at it. I also came to the conclusion that somebody had left it in the press far too long as it was extremely dry to the point it was almost inedible. It truly tasted like a BBQ sauce coated piece of cardboard. I have no idea why my food came out the way it did as there were four staff working when I came in for food and it was well past the busy downtown lunch hour. I see a lot of good reviews for this place which makes me think someone was just having a really off day but after paying what I did and getting the quality of food that I received I have no interest in taking another chance on this place. read more

Ok, so it's a salad place, right? Um, no I was wrong, it is so much more and to be frank, it honestly way exceeded my expectations. This is why: 1) The salads are really creative and fun. I had the newest leafy lunch on the list; The Spaniard. It was amazing! I never thought to put brown dirty rice on a salad before, but it totally works! I ordered the side salad size, with chicken and it was perfect for me (tiny girl sized). It was suggested that the salad have a bit of Franks Red Hot squeezed over the whole thing and boy was that awesome! I love Franks, it's fat free, basically zero calories which means I use less of the yummy (but not so healthy dressing) and it also went perfectly with the dressing and ingredients in the salad to 'kick things up a notch!' Which leads us to... 2) It was suggested to me, to use the Franks, by the owner; Preston. Preston and his crew are what makes this more then just a 'salad' place. He is so fun, so high energy, zany, crazy about eating healthy and just loves life. Walking in there and feeding off of his energy is as much of a mid day pick-me-up as lunch! 3) The ambiance! Hello, the Gorillas are blasting out of the speakers and turning the place into a pseudo garden party. And the cool installation chandeliers give off a great light, soft and sunny - rarely found in the middle of a mall or office tower. So there you have it! I came here because I had a salad craving for lunch and it was suggested by my co worker. I had intentions of going to Sunterra, but I figured a place that specialized in salads would have to be comparable, or better. Sadly I was mistaken and felt completely ripped off. I ordered the Southwest Cobb because I had brought an avocado with me to work that I could add once I got to the office. When I opened the salad to add the avocado I was so disappointed. The salad was wilted and discolored, there was barely any dressing and I think there was one cherry tomato cut into two. All this for $9...I opted not to add chicken...and if I had I would have been another $3. My co worker had one of the rice salads, and they looked really good. Maybe if I went back I would try that. I also really liked the water, and that you could buy a cup and have unlimited chopped leaf waters (they change on a regular basis). All in all, not worth it and that kind of makes sad. If you are going to market yourself as the "go to" salad place in downtown, then make exceptional salads. read more

This is my favourite spot for lunch! It's literally steps away from my office and the salads are delicious! Everything here is healthy and fresh, it's all sooooo good! I don't eat fast food so when I do forget to pack my lunch, or I just don't have enough time this is always a great alternative. I generally opt for the create your own salad, but I've also had the tomato soup and veggie salad rolls. All are delicious! The portion sizes are really well thought out. When I add chicken to the started size, I am definitely full, they give you a good amount of protein. I also love the rewards program they have where each $1 you spend = 100 points and once you get to 15,000 points you get $15 towards your lunch! I wish there was one of these on campus, or maybe I don't, because then I would end up spending all my money on delicious salads! Great place, I highly recommend it!!!!! read more

The Chopped Leaf is a good lunch alternative downtown. The large salads are pretty filling and full of fresh ingredients (and they're in the area of 500 calories). I had the Signature Salad, which I would definitely get again, although I might swap the feta for blue cheese... it didn't really stand out. I think the cheese was really my only complaint about the salad... I would have liked it in bigger chunks so it stood out more. The soups also looked really tasty. Have been to the Chopped Leaf in the West end and it is far superior. They always cook the protein as it is ordered, so it is fresh. I ordered the southwest wrap with chicken and the chicken was cold and very chewy. I removed the chicken and ate the rest of the wrap, but won't be going back. read more

The salads at Chopped Leaf are delicious. They are made to order, and there is enough variety to suit everyone's tastes. I chose a do-it-yourself starter size, and found it very flavourfull and fresh, albeit more expensive than I thought it would be. Proteins cost an extra $3 so what was supposed to be a $5.50 salad quickly turned into an $8.50 one. Thankfully, a lot of smoked tofu was included for the price. A full-sized one probably would have filled me up for the afternoon. I find the menu a bit on the pricey side, but the food is good and it is a very nice place to sit and eat. Dropped by The Chopped Leaf before the Yelp Elite event as I'm always unsure whether there would be adequate amount of food or if it'll be more of a snacky affair. At any rate, a light and healthy dinner beforehand is always a good idea so I was glad that my sister and her boyfriend were noshing at The Chopped Leaf, allowing me to try its wares. I ordered the Popeyes special, which is essentially a spinach salad with pecans and warm prawns. I was especially happy to have the prawns warm, because for some reason I expected them to be cold. Not here. It was delicious, but a teensy bit overpriced in my opinion. WHY isn't there one of these places on U of A campus or in another part of the city where you can go for a quick bite to eat that is ACTUALLY good for you?? I happened upon this place with a friend at Commerce Place since we were there right around lunch doing a couple of errands and were hungry but wanted something actually "fresh" and "good" (as in "good for you", but with flavour). We found Chopped Leaf in the food court area, off to the side actually with hardly anyone there, with the exception of one couple having what looked like a nice, big, flavourful salad. At first we were overwhelmed by how you order, but once we got a few questions answered, it worked out really well and happily, enjoyed our "quick and healthy" bite to eat and fill that little hole in your stomach without killing it. Sometimes, I just crave me a super healthy salad. OK, that's not true at all. But sometimes I do crave a caesar salad, and I think The Chopped Leaf's is sort of healthy. Maybe. Located in Commerce Place, it's a hot spot for the downtown lunch crowd. I swung by for a later lunch, around 2 PM, and avoided the rush. My caesar salad was absurdly delicious. The Chopped Leaf seems to understand that the key parts of a chicken caesar are chicken, croutons, and bacon bits. Finally! A restaurant that does it right. Staff were friendly and service was quick, plus I had wireless from a nearby cafe. The only reason I'm rating this 4 stars instead of 5 is because I asked for my meal to stay and it was put in a to-go box, and I was disappointed that this location doesn't offer wraps (which are listed on the website). read more

I understand when you are ordering a salad, you don't anticipate being stuffed afterwards, but after eating my "full size" salad, I was left wanting more. I get overwhelmed trying to create complimentary flavour combinations (especially with the all options available), so I chose the Sunshine Chef Designed Salad (grilled chicken, spring mix, cucumber, mozzarella, avocado, apples, with Goddess dressing). The ingredients were fresh, and I enjoyed the contrast of the tart apples with the creamy avocado and mozzarella. However, the portion of chicken was rather small, as were the other nutrient dense ingredients. It was mostly just a lot of spring mix, which does not make a satisfying meal. Considering I have had more filling salads for less than the $11 it costs at The Chopped Leaf, I probably would not return again (at least not for the salads). I'm late to the "chopped leaf game". I've come to this location several times over the past month and my experiences have been fantastic. The service is very quick, and the food is fresh. I do think charging $2 for water with a few chunks of fruit is ridiculous. The price of the salads are about $10 for the small size with chicken. Horrible food at chopped leaf In Manulife. When we went they were sold out of all of the Quesadilas, and all of the bowls. No problem I thought, at least I can get a spinach salad at Chopped leaf. Nope, all out of spinach. Ok...... my choice of romaine or iceberg lettuce. We went to have lunch as a group of 8, and they messed up the order of 5 out of 8 of us. No Tomatoes became, has tomatoes. Sauce on the side? Didn't happen. Protein , oh did you order that? Awful All of that could have even been put up with. A busy restaurant might sell out of product., but there is one thing they were should never be out of . Customer service, and smiles. The service was the weakest point, One example they have an "employee only washroom " with no sign . They will happily yell at you though for using it. Awful. When we had to go back to get the orders fixed it was "Next time you guys want modifications, order them up front, sigh" (ARE YOU KIDDING ? When did you think we ordered it?" And my favorite part of the lunch? "Next time you guys come, order ahead..." Wow, after this experience did you think that we'd be back? I used like this place a lot to get breakfast or lunch. However, lately I find they've gone downhill and they've gotten my last 3 orders incorrect. I can understand if it is busy maybe making a mistake but when I'm your only customer at the moment, there is not much excuse to not get what I ordered. How hard is it to exchange the walnuts for almonds? Instead I get walnuts and added chia seeds but no almonds at all. The other thing I find is that they've cut back on how much dressing or sides they give and sometimes it's just not enough. Lastly, I used to love the quesadillas but I just can't justify paying $10 for one to have it now only half full of the filling. I don't buy it to get a grilled tortilla with a bit of filling in the middle. It's pretty disappointing because it started off pretty good and an enjoyable place to go and now I avoid going there if I can. read more

This place has gone downhill fast. I used to grab lunch here on a frequent basis but noticed the quality started slipping a few months ago. One time my soup was only half full, another time there were ingredients missing from my salad, today was the last chance for Chopped Leaf and sadly they did not make the cut. My Hippie Cobb Salad was disgusting. The chicken was dry to the point of being unedible, a lot of the lettuce was brown, the cherry tomatoes were half rotten and they dumped the hot chicken on top of the avocado with was truly gross. One of my favorite foods for lunch is definitely a delicious salad and I have to say The Chopped Leaf did not disappoint. I ordered the sunshine salad but substituted tofu for chicken and it was very delicious. I usually find the dressing either makes or breaks the salad and this dressing was delicious and the right amount was used as nothing is worse than a over dressed soggy salad. My only complaint was I was hoping to have the tuna with the salad but when I found out it was from a can I chose to do tofu as I can throw a can of tuna on a salad at home and it won't be $3 extra. But other than that, I am definitely planning on coming back, I heard amazingness about the peanut dressing so I must try a salad with it! The quality at this place has plummeted recently, in terms of both the food and the service. I am really disappointed. I have been a regular customer for over a year (going 2, sometimes 3 times per week) but I am ready to give up on it. The prices are on the high side, which I could handle (hey, eating downtown's expensive in general) but lately, the service is not always pleasant and the food quality is REALLY inconsistent. I have been wondering if the management or ownership has changed. Some days the quesadillas ($9.50) are to-die-for, and other days they are really soggy and lacking on filling. Sometimes it takes just a few minutes to get my order, other days I have waited 15-20 minutes even though the place is virtually empty. I hope they can figure things out and get this place back on track. On the days they get it right, it's delicious! read more

I was so excited when this place opened in my office building; unfortunately, it does not live up to its potential. I created my own salad. The topping were fresh but incredibly sparse--I had one sliver of cucumber and two cherry tomatos. Also, despite not getting cheese (which is included in the price), they did let me add another topping at no cost (I asked for carrots). The salad was fine, but for $14 (I added prawns for protein), I could go to the Holt Renfrew cafe and have a better salad for less. This place is severely overpriced and has minimal toppings--not much nutritional benefit from one cucumber sliver. I would be there very day if they were more generous with their toppings and/or lowered their prices. read more

This is my favourite downtown lunch place. Yes, salad and soup doesn't leave you feeling "stuffed," but is that a bad thing? And no, the portions here aren't as big as other options in the area, but I feel good after I eat here (not weighed down, and not thinking "boy, that was a bad idea"). Their salad and soup is delish! My favourite salad is the Goddess, while my favoruite soup is probably the spicy tomato. I went to Chopped Leaf in commerce place downtown, I only ordered a soup and the soup was over $8, the soup was good but not $8 good! I could have went to Tim Hortons and paid 1/2 the price or a short trip up the stairs and paid 1/2 the price. Over charging for soup, I will not return. The portion was small and the taste was ok, the soup was no better than Tim Hortons down the hallway in Commerce Place and no better than a can of Campbells soup, The Service was slow and my soup sat on the counter for about 15 min because the lady calling out the numbers was so quiet that a lot of the orders were sitting on the counter. during the lunch hour downtown they should have a more efficient way of serving customers. I'm changing my review. Originally I was not too impressed by Chopped Leaf, but I've learned a couple things. When the owner is present, everything is made better, it's faster and generally all the employees work hard. When he's not present, they tend to slack off and that avocado you ordered in your salad? Well, you either got none or a very tiny slice. This has become one of my more frequent lunches now, especially as I've found the quality of Sunterra to have dropped. Previously, I said Sunterra was better, but now I have to say Chopped Leaf takes the cake. Now that I've found my favorite salad, (I either get the southwest or the whole bowl which is very similar but more filling), I have much fewer complaints. It's fresh, it's healthy, and while a tad on the expensive side, a pretty good lunch spot. read more

Just opened my first 'whole bowl' from Chopped Leaf. Got it to go and am at my desk eating it right now. Can't say enough how disappointed I am. I was craving avocado today so I ordered bowl No. 1, because the picture shows a bowl loaded with avacado chunks - only to find one lousy piece of avocado in my whole bowl. Seriously, it's not even as big as my pinky finger. So I paid $9 for some lettuce, rice and beans. Won't be back again, ever. read more

Order from Skip the Dishes. Our order was picked up at this location. Upon eating our food we found a worm in the salad. We called them and they were not willing to refund our order. I went to The Chopped Leaf for lunch on opening day. The line wasn't too bad and my order was entered smoothly. I did have to wait a little longer than I expected for my food to be ready, but since it was the first day a learning curve is to be expected. The menu is fairly simple and easy to understand. Although on a first visit there is a lot to take in. I ordered the "popeye" salad, but instead of the prawns I substituted two other vegetables. The large salad is large but was mostly spinach. For the large salad there could have been more dressing included. And one of the veggies that I subed was avocado, which looked like it had been sitting out uncovered for awhile. Overall the flavour of the salad was good and it was filling. However, I wouldn't order this particular one again. Might have been better with prawns.... Bottom line, I will go again and try something different. It is definitely a concept headed in the right direction. read more

First time I tried it they didnt give me the chicken I paid for so I had to go back to the location ( U of A ) to get the chicken and they forgot my friends chicken the second time I went there. I've been to Chopped a few times and it's overall fresh and a pretty reasonable option for lunch. Today I tried something new and added chicken to my salad and was very disappointed to find that they don't use real chicken breast. I love the soup at Chopped Leaf. I order a large and it's quite expensive, but really good. The last 3 out of 5 soups I've gotten have been just above half full. I have complained and was told the reason they're not full is so they can get the lid on. The lids are flat. Very, very disappointed. This is at the downtown location in Commerce Place and not the Sherwood Park location. The Sherwood Park location is amazing and I wish the downtown location had the same standards. read more
