    a salad in a box
    Lisa C.

I stood at the counter in an otherwise empty restaurant for nearly 5 minutes before the 2 staff members stopped chatting and decided to acknowledge me. "Have you decided what you want to order?" Yes, that was actually decided BEFORE I walked up to the cash register and stood there (for what felt like forever) like an awkward wallflower waiting for a prom date who isn't coming. I ordered a bowl with rice and chickpeas and asked if it had cheese on it. I was asked if I wanted chicken. I repeated my cheese question and was again asked if I wanted protein. I replied "No protein. Is there cheese on the salad?" She replied by adding cheese to my order, which I did not want. When all was said and done I paid over $10 for a sad but healthy little salad with barely 1/4 cup of rice and a sprinkling of chickpeas. In the time it took to order and receive my order I could have walked across the street to Pizza Hut and ordered their special of the day, a medium Supreme Lovers pizza...also priced at $10. Sure, I'd be a little fatter but I'd also be happy, full and not writing this review. PS - this is not a one time customer service issue...the last time I was here the staff handed me my soup to go UPSIDE DOWN.

Walking into an Evoolution store almost feels like walking into a winery. But, instead of wines,…read moreyou get to sample an amazing selection of flavoured oils and vinegars. It is very possible to spent a lot of time here. The fun is in mixing and matching the various oils and vinegars. There are so many exciting flavour combinations to try out. Sometimes, it can be overwhelming to choose something. Luckily, the signage throughout the store can help you figure out what you're into. Beside each oil and vinegar, there are suggestions of what foods are best paired with these. I also find that the staff are usually available to help you find what you're looking for. Another plus is that they have different sizes of bottles to choose from. If you're trying out a new flavour you can buy the smallest size. If you have a tried and true favourite, you can buy the largest bottle. They even have gift sets available. My family loves these Evoolution products and have been using them for years. Using these oils and vinegars have elevated my salad eating experiences at home. The bottles look so classy compared to your average grocery store salad dressing. The coolest part is that these oils and vinegars can be used for many other foods such as meats, cheeses, ice cream and popcorn! If you haven't been in one of these stores, I totally recommend checking one out!

Twice I was denied entry and had to resort to peering through the window (ja you's a window shopper). If you get the reference, we should most definitely be friends. Anyways, third time was the charm (although we made it with only half an hour to spare). We walked in and were greeted by a super friendly, easygoing evoo worker. Seriously, so nice - she explained a few things, made a few recommendations based on what I was looking for and then let us go to town on the sampling. I tasted a reasonable amount (reasonable being a loose term) of olive oil and balsamic vinaigrettes. A few that stood out for me: Tuscan herb, garlic, and the cranberry pear balsamic. So good. They come in three sizes (200ml - $13, 375ml - $19 and 750ml - $31). I ended up picking up a Tuscan herb evoo bottle ($19) and tried it in a salad dressing I made. Awesome! Very cool, chic spot - hit it up if you are looking for something to spruce up your salads/chicken/dinners! They even have these little 6 bottle samples ($36) that would be a great gift.

I hadn't seen this…read moreplace before and the previous two ratings sounded quite positive so that's where today's lunch was coming from. It's located in Whitemud Crossing which is the same strip mall as the Public Library is located except Hungry Birds is on the opposite side as the library. There are two or three tables but this is clearly a takeout café. The owner greeted us as we arrived and then explained how the menu worked. There are noodle bowls, grilled wraps, soups and salads. We opted for the noodle bowls. He then asked what size (small, medium and large). Then we chose the vegetables and meat. I had the marinated beef and my wife had the chicken. We had a choice of two types of noodles to select from or rice. Finally he asks what kind of sauce and whether or not you want cheese on top; the cheese is an add on. We also ordered a bowl of Wicked Thai Soup. I was impressed that he put the soup into a pot to heat it up rather than just scooping it directly from the soup pot. This ensured that it was hot . Once we got home we found all of our orders were quite hot. More importantly we all agreed that the noodle bowls were delicious and for the most part, nutritious. This was my first visit to Hungry Birds but it won't be my last visit. I have no problem giving them four stars.

Waiter was very kind and asked us if it was our first time and encouraged group sharing of the dishes and recommended 2-3 dishes per person. Waters were provided as well as a wine bottle-type jug with water in it - too bad the wine bottle is quite dark and the waiter cannot tell when it is empty and needs a refill. We tried: Ricotta Fritters: 7/10, tomato sauce was very overpowering in flavor, corn was very nice. Fritters themselves were very tasty and the ricotta filling was very nice but it gets hidden when eaten with the potent tomato sauce. Broccolini: 9/10, good, good flavor, cooked well just not sure they are worth the price for what you get. Risotto: 6/10, my uncle gave it a 8/10 as he liked it. To me it was pretty bland, could be that the carrot flavor isn't my thing, but just found it underwhelming and lacking flavor (maybe needs more salt too) Texture was very good though. Colcannon Gnocchi: 12/10. This dish was soooo good. Loved the mushroom cream sauce, sour cream, GIANT bacon jam blobs, gnocchi itself had good texture. But combined the flavors were phenomenal. 100% recommend this dish. Unfortunately Amberjack was not available. Herb Marinated Chicken Thighs: Chicken was 9/10 good, good flavor and texture but Brussel sprouts were bad like no one would eat them bad. Undercooked and under seasoned. Little rocks that had a bad taste. Sauce was good to add moisture but was very very bland/tasteless. Overall this fed 3 of us well with no leftovers but also no room for dessert.

When you think about "vegetarian fare" this will inevitably conjure images of hippy restaurants that serve one type of food (a bowl of vegetables?). Maybe this was once the case but it certainly isn't anymore. (I think that Padmanadi had a large part to play in this development and that they paved the way for a wider selection of plant-based foods in our city.) Today, you can find restaurants from all cultures that specialize in plant-based cuisine and even pub food and pizza! I support this movement and love constantly being proven that animal products are not necessary to make delicious food. And this is coming from a staunch omnivore who clearly eats everything. Good food is just good food! One of the restaurants that has been making waves in this arena is An Chay, a Vietnamese vegetarian restaurant that has been around since 2017. Their name literally means eat vegetarian! Located in Oliver on Jasper Ave, they are in a prime location to feed bustling downtown folk a different take on Vietnamese cuisine. Avenue Magazine named them Best Plant-Based Restaurant 2020 and I couldn't wait to taste their take on some classic and familiar dishes. As previously mentioned, their location is quite excellent on a prime corner in the center of the city. Inside you'll find a fresh space that is filled with bright windows. I loved the pendant lighting adorning the ceiling that look a bit like lanterns. Some of the tables have very cozy chairs that beckon you to really settle in. I was seated at such a table and enjoyed the casual cafe vibe of it all. Our server was incredibly friendly, delivering plates of food to our table in hardly any time at all. For a beverage I went straight for the Burdock Tea ($2.00) which seemed like the most unique thing to order on the menu apart from the Vietnamese iced coffee. I enjoyed how different this was! This tea was not the typical green-jasmine situation that is normally found at Asian restaurants. I could see the pieces of burdock root steeping in the pot, an ingredient known for its antioxidant properties. The nice earthy flavour was something all its own and very pleasant to drink. The food menu is somewhat concise with only five appetizers and ten entrees to choose from. There is no need for more! I would much prefer that a restaurant does a smaller number of dishes really well, instead of offering way too many without being able to maintain quality. Spring rolls and fresh rolls make key appearances on the appetizer menu, as does a green onion cake (it's the Edmonton way). But I was most excited about the Green Papaya Salad (Green papaya, soy jerky, basil, sriracha sauce, roasted peanuts and fried onions. Served with house soy sauce - $14.00) otherwise known as Goi Du Du. I love a zesty green papaya salad that is full of spice! It would be easy to serve a green papaya salad as a plant-based dish - that's already what it is! But I really liked seeing that An Chay is taking this dish to the next level by using ingredients like soy jerky. I appreciated seeing that they are leaning into what it is that makes their food unique and special. This salad was so fresh and had excellent texture. We poured the house soy sauce over top to kick the flavours up even more. Sweet, savoury, and a hint of spice. I loved the soy jerky most of all because of the wonderful pork floss-like texture. Choosing an entree was easy because the dish that I wanted to try seemed so obvious. It had to be the Vermicelli Special (Vermicelli, tempura, shredded beancurd, spring rolls, shredded lettuce, cucumber, mint leaf, pickled daikon & carrots, red cabbage, roasted peanuts, fried onions. Served with vinaigrette sauce - $17.00) otherwise known as Bun 3 Mau. However, An Chay does offer their own take on pho and their coconut curry sounds wonderful. Plated with an artistic hand, the beauty of this dish with its stunning rainbow of colours was a sight to behold. You eat with your eyes first and this dish couldn't have been more appealing. I poured the tangy vinaigrette over the entire bowl and reveled in the symphony of flavours. I loved the pops of cool freshness from the mint, acidity from the daikon and carrots, and crunch from the peanuts and fried onions. I noticed a delightful coconut flavour that I think was mixed in with the shredded beancurd. One perplexing ingredient was the tempura. I think that "tempura" refers to the pan fried item that looked a bit like SPAM (only it wasn't). I'm not sure what this ingredient was but I loved it (if someone had told me that it was meat I would have believed them). I also absolutely adored the spring rolls (cha gio) because again An Chay took an item that I've had a million times but made it their own. Filled with bean thread noodles, fried beancurd, taro, yam, and mung bean; the ultra crispy exterior almost reminded me of a frie
