This is a good place to eat. I've never eaten inside, always on the patio. The patio is sunken and in front. It faces the busy Whyte Avenue where metered sreet parking is available. The service is consistently friendly. They have all day brunch and I've tried a few things on the brunch menu, all have been satisfying. Most recently had the blinztes with a side of back bacon. Came here to watch ' Just a Girl' Fringe show performance. The owner of the bar explained that he had been working on creating a space that would be usable for events like the Fringe and Open Mic nights. My date and I didn't order any food but we thoroughly enjoyed the Elderflower Grapefruit Mimosas. I didn't realize there would be a full menu available or we would've dined here rather than somewhere else before the show. Next time, I will definitely give their menu a try. We always enjoy our meals at Rooster Cafe & Kitchen which are typically breakfast and brunch. Today was no exception. The service was quick, professional and pleasant. The sound level was quiet enough to hear our conversation but not silent. There was a good variety of choices for brunch. I ordered the Polanchitas for $17.00. They are like crepes but with ricotta cheese inside. I really enjoyed them. One guest ordered the standard bacon and eggs breakfast and another had the Benny. Everyone was pleased with their choices. Parking is always a challenge in Old Strathcona but we parked right around the corner where the street parking is free. There was plenty of metered parking right in front of the cafe. We would come more often if we lived in the area but we don't so it's a treat to come back. I recommend it, for breakfast at least since I haven't been here for anything else. read more

I cannot believe that I live a very short walk away form this place and it took me so long to finally venture in. The place is very inviting and gets all the beautiful sunlight during breakfast and brunch hours. Our server was very attentive and friendly and always popped up right on time to refill the coffee and water. They were fairly busy so we were warned that the food might take a bit longer than usual, but with plenty of coffee and good company, that wasn't a big deal to me. Their menu had the typical brunch dishes you'd expect but they also have some more unique items like the brisket benny, polanchintas (crepes) and cheesecake stuffed French toast. I got the brisket skillet. This was served in a cute little cast iron skillet with perfectly fried potatoes and onions. I also asked for a poached egg on top and that was an excellent addition to the dish. The brisket was amazing and was a perfect quantity so as not to feel too stuffed. I find the $12 price tag to be reasonable too. And I believe their meat is locally sourced as well. The coffee was great as well and they were more than happy to let me sit for another hour doing my homework as it was past their busy hours when we were done eating. Overall I am very impressed with their quality of service and food. They may just have to work out a few kinks to reduce food service time. I hope they're here to stay. read more

My friends and I chose this restaurant because it was in a good location and we had seen good reviews. The place was not busy and the food took a LONG time to arrive. When we asked the server to update when our food would arrive, we got a really rude answer and no apology. There were no servers who would check in on us, freshen up our coffees or just generally attentive. When the food arrived, it was not warm. Eggs, bacon and potatoes .. it did not justify the one hour wait. I would not recommend this restaurant. There are better places for brunch. This is a highly disappointing restaurant. read more

We waited about an hour to get a table and another 25min to have the food. Brunches are always kind of similar but also have lots of space for the genius chef to show their creativity and talents. I always like smoke salmon benny, but sometimes the thick and either over-citrous or over-buttery hollandaise sauce make me have to ask to put the sauce on side. However, the green "hollandaise" amazed my picky tastebud. The brown butter gives it a hint of caramel taste and the subtle pesto flavour gives a new way to explain "fresh". The thick cut smoke salmon makes me feel super spoiled. The yolk of the free-run egg just like absorb the weekend morning sunshine - golden, shinny, and fully of colour of healthy. I had high expectations and was left a little disappointed. We arrived 10 to 9AM and the Rooster was only about half full. We were seated and greeted upon entrance, so far so good. However, we didnt have a server stop at our table for at least another 10 minutes, which was fine, we took our time perusing the menu. It did seem a bit chaotic in there, as there were complaints from a few other tables that their food was taking too long. Eventually, a waitress for another table came by to grab our order. My orange juice and my husband's coffee arrived relatively soonafter; however, it was probably another 30 minutes until our food arrived to our table. I guess good thing we weren't in a rush or had anywhere to be! I think they must be still working out the kinks and smoothing out the flow of service. Fortunately, our food arrived to our table correctly! Unfortunately, for the people beside us, not so much. I noticed them swapping bacon and various breads because they table had ordered more or the less the same thing with different variations, and somehow everything arrived to the table all jumbled. They were quite gracious about it. I ordered the sour cherry cheesecake stuffed french toast and my husband had the breakfast poutine. I enjoyed my french toast. The sour cherries and cream cheese filling went together well. The challah in the french toast wasnt overly dry or hard, which I would expect when layered with cheesecake filling in between, and sitting on a bed of sour cherry. My only disappointment was that as it was delivered to the table it toppled over and the whipped cream topping too :( I also managed to sneak a couple bits of my husband's breakfast poutine. It came topped with 2 poached eggs and the hollandaise sauce that was slightly congealed. It looked like it may have actually been sitting under a food warmer for couple minutes because it was starting to dry out slightly. I suspect my dish may have been sitting under a heat lamp/foodwarmer as well. The portions were quite decent and we both ended up having to get the last bits packed up to go! There is quite a bit of seating in the restaurant; however, capacity kind of negates the service at this point. Service was a bit slow and I think they must be still working out the kinks in the backend or may be understaffed in the kitchen because service was quite slow for the food they offer. The servers were nice and friendly, but a little bit frazzled. The atmosphere in the dining room was a bit chaotic and a few times, I saw servers having to bring dishes back to the kitchen. It might be an alright place to catch up with a friend you havent seen in a long while if you want to have ample time to catch up. However, because of the acoustics in the dining room, the hum of chatter from other tables depending where you are sitting could make it hard to hear your friend from across the table. The food tasted alright once it finally arrived. I did also really like that they source a lot of ingredients from throughout the province. I might be back to try out the bagel boards or just pop in to grab a bagel to go another time, but there are other places on my list to try out so it could be a while before I cycle back. Taking over from the popular Artisan Resto-Cafe, I like where Rooster is going with their menu and more importantly, their service. They promote that they support local businesses, so you'll find desserts from local bakeries, meats from local butchers, coffee from local roasters, etc. I love this!! Service is super friendly and attentive without making you feel rushed. Being a new menu, we were given lots of recommendations. We ordered coffee and they put on a fresh pot. The little things. Stopped by this little place last Sunday. Feels great to have businesses opening their doors again. It was a friend who suggested it. I always forget about Rooster. Its seems almost tucked away, like so many great businesses around Whyte Avenue. You barely notice it. It was a nice day, so we did the patio. I actually didn't get a peek inside as my friend was already seated. They have a pretty sizable menu. Mostly it has what you might expect. Makes me think of Denny's. The place has a lot of burgers. I think they have some special where you buy a burger and get 1 half off. I ended up getting the Pepper Pig Burger. Really good! My friend said the service can be hit or miss. I was invited here for my birthday brunch. First time trying this place. I was actually surprise how busy it was and beautiful harvest décor for the season. We were guided to our table, while we check the menu the server took our drink order. The food was really good, We enjoyed the The Western Standard (traditional breakfast), Iron Brisket Skillet which is House-made slow roasted brisket with caramelized onions and potatoes...maybe more brisket or gravy would be nice as it is a small size Brisket and lots of hash so a bit dry for me. We also tried the Canadian Sidekick humongous pancake served with two cackleberries (EGGS), potatoes and CANADIAN maple syrup in addition to your choice of crispy bacon, back or turkey bacon, pork sausage, and garnished with fruit. The Canadian Sidekick was definitely my favorite. As it is a well balance dish. I loved Artisan, and was sad when it closed. However, life moves on and it was time to try Rooster, the new restaurant in its place. The interior has not changed that much, which I found comforting. The servers were extremely friendly. Rooster's menu is unique and has a large selection of bagels with house-made cream cheese and different kinds of smoked salmon. I went for the "Mentch" which was a bagel, cream cheese, and choice of smoked salmon. Served on a wooden tray, you assemble your creation yourself, which also comes with capers, red onions, and tomato slices. I'm not big on cream cheese, but the lemon dill version I chose was very flavourful. I had the lemon coriander gravlax, and fond the flavour to be a bit subtle, but enjoyable. Overall it was a good, light lunch and paired with a glass of freshly-squeezed orange juice, very satisfying. I will be back. read more

Was turned into this place online when I heard of a Jewish style Deli, and also heard corned beef and Matzo ball soup! Unfortunately both were not in when I arrived Sunday...I'll chalk it up to growing pains of a new restaurant. As well in that category is the service which was good but slow and a bit unorganized. When your new and busy these things need to be top priority! The menu was not as I had hoped but has some of those Jewish favourites. More of a Canadian brunch style menu. Love the bagels and smoked salmon varieties and I hear the Matzo and Corned beef will make their way into the regular menu. The Polachintas jumped out. As a Hungarian, these are a personal family favourite and just mate the Tomato magazines #20 in the cities top 100 dishes! I opted for the Reuben since I was craving the meats...wanted to add something else but nothing really fit. Coffee was good! Soup was sold out. So were the other sandwiches. Thanks for saving me the last Reuben! Took quite a while but again...new place. Kinks to work So the Reuben was top notch. Super soft dark rye, a hint of sweetness with the sauce and grainy mustard. I've been to the Rooster twice this week! My first visit was a weekday morning with a friend. I was so impressed that I brought my family on the weekend. Super busy on a Sunday morning so expect to wait a bit for a table. Service was cheerful and friendly and coffee was Iconoclast so very good. Our breakfasts were amazing! To finish off we opted to share the Blueberry Polachintas. So good--and so big! We ended up taking one home. My only caveat is that it can get quite loud in there on the weekend when it's packed so be ready for that. Overall, an A+ experience and will definitely be back! read more

I've been the Rooster Cafe many times. The most recent of which was an extremely disappointing experience. The restaurant was not overwhelmingly busy but they we're definitely understaffed. This would not have been a problem if there was some communication about that. After 50 minutes of waiting for our food, we asked about the timeline. The server checked and said it was coming now. It took another almost 10 minutes. When the food arrived, my order which needed to be gluten free due to me being Celiac was not even though I very clearly specified that when I order the dish. There was no apology. The food was taken back and "redone". However, with how quickly it came out of the kitchen, I was very hesitant that it was actually gluten free. Unfortunately, I went home and felt unwell after eating the meal. There was no apologies and no offer of a discounted bill for me having to wait even longer and watch those win my party eat their meals. The service left much to be desired and I doubt I will be returning out of concerns that my serious allergy was not taken seriously. read more

After a 2 year hiatus from Rooster, I returned this morning to help my friend celebrate her birthday. Thankfully their cream cheesestuffed French toast was 'great'! The other two meals were no where near. A skillet with dry potatoes, a drizzle of hollandaise and hard (wasn't given an option) poached eggs, was nothing close to what I remembered from the last time I ate here. The rubbery Ricotta filled crepes with a watery, 'compote' topping was also disappointing. Add a side order of bacon - 2 very sad strips of bacon, and an order of pork sausage, a single link, that could have been under a broiler for too long, and we had a meal that was underwhelming and very disappointing Our cost: over $100 for 3 people - we had coffee, juice and a flight of mimosas. Pre covid, this was a favourite brekkie location. Too bad today was my last visit to Rooster. I'll stick to OEB! read more

And then asking if we would like an over easy egg instead as it cooks faster.... They couldn't even get my over easy egg cooked correctly for my meal. What manager doesn't come out to speak to the customers regarding the issues we had with our food? Why asked how we like our eggs if you don't cook it the way we want as we are paying customers! It wasn't just our table that was having issues with the food, service and the management. Good to know as both our tables discussed how the place was not busy, food took forever to come out and manager avoiding customers. I rarely complete a review but after today, I simply must! Used to come to this place years ago and it never disappointed, took some friends there today for Sunday brunch and it was beyond disappointing. Slow. Sooo slow. It wasn't even busy. Drinks took 30 mins. I ordered a Cesar and it was undrinkable. The service was so slow, I walked to the bar and ordered a beer. The server seemed unimpressed "someone else brought you a beer?".... Yes. The server did try to make amends on the Cesar by making me a second one - no improvement - and at that point I had switched to beer. Food took well over an hour. Two of the plates were wrong (simple brunch orders, no modification), simply brought us the wrong plates of food. No apology. Just "oh", carried it away and brought back different plates. Both ordered bacon, were given back bacon. I had a burger and I am very confident that the leather sandal I was wearing would have been less offensive to eat. The brunches were bland, cold...it's hard to mess up eggs and toast, but no butter and nothing on the table like jam or peanut butter. Had to ask for it all and it took forever. Cold. Dry. Toast. Blah. No surprise the bills took a long time to get and they were wrong. Thankful we are among friends and just paid so we could get it. I seldom drive away from a place feel remorseful for wasting my money, but today I did. When my friend told me that we were meeting at the Rooster on Whyte Ave. for brunch I was expecting just another cafe shop with some french toast or maybe scramble eggs.. well this was not the case, I'm so excited to recommend everyone to try the Rooster. We had a really good time, not just because of the company but the food, the ambiance and the service are fighting the first place. We came on a Sunday around 10am, parking was not an issue, we parked right in front of the restaurant, our table was ready and the server was amazing. I feel bad I don't remember her name but she was so helpful and nice, she took care of us in every detail, even when we had an extra person joining our table, her food came almost at the same time that ours. A group of 6 girls is not easy to handle, we all wanted something special and we had restrictions on our food and the server got everything perfectly, no mistakes no issues. My Frittata was spectacular, all the ingredients were fresh and with a nice flavor, the decoration was nice, no too salty, not plain, perfectly balanced. The potatoes were good too. At the end of our visit I mentioned to the server that was our friend birthday and she was happy to split her bill into the five of us, that was great, but the best part was when the manager of the Rooster came with a nicely decorated brownie for the birthday girl and 6 spoons! AMAZING PLACE!!! Went with my dad for his birthday today and Ash (the owner / partner) was awesome. We had come last year for the same reason and he remembered us and where we had been seated!!! Checked up on us regularly and made sure we loved the food. The food was REALLY good - so flavourful and unlike other breakfast places with typical breakfast foods - has such a unique menu and the spices are phenomenal. My friend highly recommended this place and I trust her judgement so here we are! She, my husband, and I are here for a "quick" lunch before my husband and I head back to Calgary. It's our servers first day! He's doing a really good job! I'm sad that they're out of almost everything I wanted to try (the polenchintas, mushroom toast, lemon dill cream cheese, no soup of the day , and a couple other things). My husband ordered the Samson Sammy. He had asked for some breakfast potatoes on the side but this was miscommunicated so he never got potatoes. My friend ordered the frittata with a salad on the side. She said the frittata was good, but under seasoned. The salad was delicious. I tasted the dressing and it was so good! I had the schmear with an everything bagel and scallion cream cheese and a side of cucumber salad. The bagel was homemade and delicious as was the cream cheese. The addition of tomato and onion made it even more refreshing. The cucumber salad was so good!! My husband says the coffee was great and didn't mind paying the extra fee for bottomless. I really enjoyed their homemade iced tea. It's light and lemony and not too sweet but also doesn't make you pucker. Overall everything we had was great. Rooster Kitchen recently took over Artisan Resto Cafe on Whyte Ave. They serve breakfast and lunch (or should we say brunch?) 7 days a week! They're all about being local by using farm ingredients that are locally sourced, freshly prepared items from local producers, and coffee from Iconoclast Coffee Roasters. Their restaurant is split into two sections, a cafe on one side and a full-service restaurant on the other side. Their cafe is great for quick items to stay or to-go, including their bagel sandwiches! On the other hand, the restaurant has a menu full of variety. The menu includes breakfast items such as eggs benny, French toast, breakfast poutine. and a frittata of the day. If you're in the mood for lunch, you can choose from items such as bagel boards, soups & salads, and grilled cheese. My friend ordered their Egg Cream Soda because it was the most interesting beverage on their menu. The soda consists of fizzy chocolate milk with homemade chocolate syrup. We would both describe it as a chocolate pop. She didn't like it at all and described it as a chocolate milky soda water. I didn't mind it and thought it was a weird and interesting taste that you probably had to get used to. I tried out one of their bagel boards because who can really resist salmon and house whipped cream cheese in a bagel? For bagel board options, you can either choose The Schmear (bagel, cream cheese, tomato + red onion + capers), The Mensch (same as The Schmear as well as your choice of Sgambaro's Atlantic smoked salmon, beetroot fennel cured gravlax, or lemon coriander cured gravlax), or The Rooster Platter which is great for sharing between 2 people (includes everything mentioned for The Mensch including all 3 types of salmon). I decided to go with The Mensch. I had it with a poppyseed bagel (bagel choices vary by day), lemon dill cream cheese (other choices are plain and scallion), and Sgambaro's Atlantic smoked salmon. Rooster Cafe uses Gryfe's bagels from Toronto. These bagels are pre-baked in Toronto, then freshly baked when they're ordered at the restaurant. These aren't your typical Timmy's bagels - Gryfe's bagels are light and fluffy. I turned my bagel into a bagel sandwich and ate it in 5 bites. It was probably one of the best bagels I've ever had! It was delicious, and I was sad that there wasn't anymore of it. I wouldn't say that this is super filling but it's enough to satisfy you. The cream cheese wasn't too heavy or creamy like others, and the smoked salmon tasted fresh! I wish that the bagel boards were accompanied by a small side, though, such as the breakfast potatoes I kept stealing from my friend's plate. My friend who is a huge eggs benny lover went with The Rooster Benny. The poached eggs laid on top of sliced bagel halves instead of English muffins. Irving's Farm back bacon was used to sandwich in between the bagel and poached egg. My friend normally doesn't like bacon but she thought this one tasted amazing. For veggie lovers, the bacon can be substituted by arugula and grilled tomato. The benny was topped off with brown butter hollandaise sauce, and came with breakfast potatoes and fresh fruit on the side. Ketchup wasn't needed with these potatoes because they were perfectly seasoned. She mentioned that she enjoyed the watermelon included in the fresh fruit because it was like a taste of summer in the winter! Everyone knows that brunch is the best meal of the week and it's even better when you can get it 7 days a week! I'd recommend stopping by here for one of their bagel boards because it was so so good (but not that filling so eat something else t00). I'll be back for another one! read more

I prefer supporting locally owned restaurants and had wanted to try Rooster for a while. There are usually pretty big crowds there on the weekend and since my usual brunch partner and I were both off on a weekday, we thought we'd take the opportunity to check it out. What a complete disappointment. We both decided to try the veggie benny since it's our go-to when having breakfast out. I wanted a side of avocado which ended up not being available since the restaurant didn't have any that were ripe. My companion ordered a side of turkey bacon which sadly, other than the watermelon garnish, was the best part of his meal. The veggies on the benny consisted of a slice of tomato and romaine lettuce. (Who on earth thinks that lettuce is okay on a benny???) The hollandaise sauce was sparse, which turned out to be fine since it was mostly flavourless, was broken, and barely edible. The potatoes were dark so appeared to be overcooked, but in actuality they were very much undercooked in the inside. The few I managed to eat seemed to just be old and reused from a previous day. The bagel that the eggs came on wasn't toasted or even warmed, and didn't even have a hint of butter on it, leaving it dry and not worth salvaging from this substandard meal. On top of it all, the entire meal was cold. Service from the kitchen was incredibly slow for a place that only had 3 tables with 7 other patrons seated within. The server did offer to return the meals to the kitchen to fix whatever was wrong, but we didn't bother since there was so much wrong with the meal that it wouldn't have made a difference. What all was said and done, I ate less than a quarter of what was on the plate, basically the eggs, tomatoes, and the slice of orange and watermelon used as garnish. There are so many great breakfast and brunch places in the Whyte Ave area with great food and a warm atmosphere. This is not one of them. It was maybe my 3rd time here and again, service was subpar and the restaurant was half empty. They don't train their staff to have any form of personality at all. Ordered the smoke salmon plate and got 3 slices of salmon on it. I'm not down with cheap restaurants that can't even serve you a decent meal. Take it off the menu, if you can't afford to put more than 3 slice of salmon on the smoked salmon plate. This turned me right off this restaurant and I doubt I'll go back after this. There's too many choices in Edmonton. I love supporting local, but you also have to earn that loyalty. read more

Fairly decent breakfast place, not much to say about the Rooster. Didn't blow my mind by any stretch of the imagination. The brisket is good with the Benny, other than that, the service, food, portion size, and the place in general is just average. Better than a Denny's is the best way to say it. Ha read more

Stumbled across Rooster on Yelp, and decided to give it a try! Really cute, cozy place. We had great service and conversation from Ash, and the food was great! Came out fresh and hot. Yummy drinks and a fun variety of mimosas to try. Really nice place to come for a quiet, relaxing brunch. Reasonably priced too! Will definitely be back :) thanks for the great experience! read more

My first time in, I e been wanting to try the place out for a while actually and I was exceptionally satisfied. I ordered the, I forgot what it was called, something like the patty sandwich. Well worth every penny. The service was great and they don't come up to you with your mouth full asking questions. Lol. For sure for sure I am coming back to try other dishes. read more

Avocado toast was offensive - maybe a teaspoon of store bought guacamole on white Texas toast when sourdough was advertised.. 3 stars however- my partners meal - the brisket skillet was quite good. read more
