Sweet and sour soup. An Chay - Edmonton, AB
Christina B.

Happy house here ! Last minute decision to pick up our NYE eats from An Chay. We were blown away with the Quality and presentation of our take out. Must orders: Bun Hue ~ Specify your Spice tolerance. The broth is full of flavour !! Sweet & Sour Soup - What everyone else has said. Nomnomnom. Papaya salad - Staple. I love this paired with Bun Hue. The papaya salad, cuts the heat in this wickedly spicy broth. Verdict: If you have not eaten or ordered from An Chay, DO IT NOW , You won't be disappointed !!

Returned this week and tried spring rolls (not at all greasy). Satay noodles were consistently excellent. Awesome veggie food in new restaurant w cool vibe. Easy background music - none of the big bass techno music. Recommend shredded tofu rolls - crunchy vegetables w tofu in rice wrapper. Green papaya salad is the best I've had - and pretentious moment here, I've been to Vietnam. Haha. I had the satay noodles w a broth that would satisfy a carnivore, it's so hearty. Dinner mate had spicy noodles that were also delicious. End your meal w burdock tea for your digestion and a healthy liver (according to traditional Asian lore). Definitely a place to return to again and again.

Nice balance of ingredients in the salad rolls

I've been wanting to try this place since they opened and I'm so happy to finally be able to. Their food is super fresh and the quality is great. I tried the curry tofu salad rolls (definitely taste the curry but it's not overpowering) and it comes with a peanut sauce to dip. $9.90 for 4 rolls. The 3 colour bowl for $16.50 has crispy spring rolls, shredded bean curd and what they call tempura, but is similar to a vegetarian sausage. Cones with "fish sauce". I really enjoyed everything and am looking forward to trying more from the menu.

Tried this place out about three times now, I have to say this place has legit good tasting vegetarian vietnamese food. I have to admit that I was pretty skeptical in the beginning because I could not picture vegetarian vietnamese food... but it is delicious here. An Chay translates directly to "eat vegetarian" in English. The flavors, the presentation and the blend of different items just works. It also does taste like the real dishes, but just vegetarian style. Since coming to this restaurant I tried the springrolls, green papaya sald, satay noodle soup and also the regular vietnamese noodle soup. The spring rolls were crispy and fried with fresh oil. The "meat" added a great flavour and texture to the overall dish. The "fish" sauce added a kick of spice. I felt content and happy with all of my choices so far since I have been here. This is the first vegetarian Vietnamese restaurant in YEG. I plan on trying some more of their appetizers next time and the vermicelli bowls, which look delicious. I think the only downside I see right now are the portions. We finished the dishes easily and still felt a bit hungry after. Could've gotten a XL pho at any other vietnamese restaurant for around $12 and be full off that. I guess that's the trade off for healthier options, but I do not regret it. I will definitely be coming back.

A vegan/vegetarian Vietnamese restaurant that's as good as it gets! Came here with a bunch of co-workers, most of whom are not actually vegetarian, but everyone enjoyed their meals. I had vietnamese rice paper rolls with some kind of marinated tofu instead of meat that was absolutely delicious, would not have known it wasn't pork if I hadn't assembled the rolls myself. The servings are generously sized - I could easily have shared my dish with another person, but it was delicious enough that I ate it all myself anyway. They also had an interesting burdock tea I hadn't tried before, which was very refreshing. It's convenient to the downtown area (right near the Structube on Jasper) but still far enough that parking in the evening wasn't a problem, even on a Friday. The only two negatives I can think of is that it closes unusually early at 8pm and isn't open on Tuesdays at all, so double check before you go. And they really don't have much selection in the way of dessert - on the day we went they had only one thing to offer (some kind of strawberry cake) and had run out of every other option. On the other hand, you'll probably be full enough from the main course you won't need dessert!

Back in town meant seeing my two favourite vegetarians for food. I'm always skeptical when it comes to pure Vietnamese vegetarian restaurants but we decided to give An Chay a go. It's right next door to Die Pie. We dropped in on a Wednesday evening (around 7:15pm). There was only three other tables occupied while we were there. The inside is very open and you can see straight into the restaurant from all angles. Staff were friendly, prompt and refilled waters frequently. The menu is surprisingly short and sweet. One page with 5 appetizers and 10 entrees. Beauty. We wanted to try the betel leaf wraps but they'd already ran out. - Vietnamese ice coffee ($4.00) - L's never had one before! Strong coffee flavour. - Goi cuon (A2) ($7.00 for four) - marinated curry tofu, vermicelli, cucumber, lettuce, mint leaf, pickled daikon and carrot. It came with a peanut sauce. Curry tofu was flavourful with a hint of heat. Peanut sauce was freshly made and well balanced. - Bun hue (B4) ($15.00) - round noodles, spiced lemongrass broth, fried tofu, lotus root, enoki mushroom and vegan sausage. Broth had good depth and flavour, especially when you consider it's purely vegetarian. Impressed with the aroma and prominence of the lemongrass. My favourite entree of the night. - Hu tieu satay (B7) ($13.00) - flat noodles, satay sauce, fried tofu, bean sprouts, enoki mushroom, cucumber, tomato, basil and roasted peanuts. Broth was good but it could have been even more peanuty. - Com tofu xao xa ot (B8) ($13.00) - marinated tofu, lemongrass, asparagus and brown rice. Tofu was lightly fried but flavourful. Asparagus was an interesting choice along with sliced carrots. Rice was a healthy but small scoop. It's a few dollars more than your typical Vietnamese restaurant but if you're a vegetarian, you'll be in pho heaven. My two vegetarian friends loved it and even I was impressed with the quality.

I actually have no idea how long An Chay has been sitting on this little corner of Jasper Ave and 112St and as a restaurant that advertises "Vegetarian Vietnamese Cuisine" it never really registered on my radar. However my partner, who is vegetarian, suggested it as a place to try one day and I am happy to say I was pleasantly surprised. An Chay isn't very big but has a lot of big windows so it provides a lot of natural lighting for a nice meal atmosphere and, as I already stated, it's on the corner of Jasper ave so it also provides a lively people watching experience. We were greeted promptly, despite there only being one server and our overall service experience was good. We ordered tofu salad rolls to share and then I order their satay soup and my partner got a lemongrass tofu I think. The salad rolls were fresh and came with a peanut sauce. My satay soup was good, not too spicy or too big. It was just what I needed that day to fill belly. I, initially, was a little weary around how the flavour would be seeing as there was no meat in the pho but it was quite tasty. My partner also really enjoyed his tofu dish, which came with "fish sauce" and rice. As someone who doesn't adhere or identify as a vegetarian, An Chay was a pleasant surprise and a place I would definitely revisit with my partner or a friend who wanted to go for Vietnamese cuisine. The food was flavorful and still captured the tastes of Vietnamese food and the atmosphere was very chill and relaxed. Plus their location is fairly ideal and there is street parking. I think my only side note would be that considering it is a vegetarian establishments, I thought prices were a little high - not drastically high or anything but enough for me to notice I suppose. Still worth a try for sure.

Second time here with friends and it never disappoints! An Chay is such a hidden gem for amazing delicious vegan/vegetarian food made with attention to detail and you never feel guilty after eating here. Service from Calvin is also friendly and attentive. Water glasses are filled throughout the meal. Get the vermicelli special and the papaya salad to start - both full or flavour and freshness and I'm already dreaming of my next visit back

Vietnamese is one of my favourite kinds of cuisine and being a non-pork and seafood eater, vegan works well for me. An Chay is spacious, bright, and has lots of comfortable seating. The menu features spring rolls, soups, and vermicelli bowls, with the twist of everything being plant-based. Tofu and soy is mostly used for the protein. I had a vegan pho and found the flavour profile of the broth to be excellent, with lots of noodles, soft tofu, lotus root, and different kinds of mushrooms. Service is very friendly and the bathrooms are sparkling. Highly recommended.

Spicy noodle soup

Ordered some takeout from here on a Thursday evening around 6pm and everything was ready within 5 minutes. We started with the fresh tofu rolls, which were very tasty -- the tofu they use is seasoned really wonderfully and the peanut sauce was great. I ordered the spicy noodle soup and my wife ordered the satay noodle soup, both of which were very tasty: lots of veggies, lots of noodles, generous portions, and amply spicy. We were certainly full. Bill came to about $43 after tax. Recommended place.

Coconut Curry - yummy!

I have been meaning to write a review for this restaurant for a while now. I absolutely loved it! We were greeted by the owner who was super friendly and made us feel at home. The menu has many delicious vegetarian Vietnamese dishes to choose from. My friend and I shared the Vermicelli Special and the Coconut Curry dish to share. Both were equally delicious! Lots of flavour, very filling and you can taste the 'homemade' comfort in love in each bite. I even enjoyed the 'fish' sauce which I normally dislike but I am assuming it was a take on fish sauce as this is a vegetarian restaurant. Not sure what the ingredients were but it alone had me convinced to come back ;-). All in all, if you like vegetarian and Vietnamese food, you should definitely check it out. It is worth your time and very reasonably priced. My only complaint is that they are not open past 8pm on the weekends which doesn't leave a lot of time for dinner if you like to eat later in the evening. I am looking forward to my next visit. Thank you for your hospitality!

An Chay restaurant is a fantastic Vietnamese vegetarian/vegan restaurant on Jasper Avenue. Definitely a "strong" five out of five!! I enjoyed the Green Papaya Salad, and the Satay Noodle soup (fried tofu, bean sprouts, mushroom, tomatoes, basil, peanuts) , which was peanutty, savoury, and entirely delicious! The coconut curry soup is wonderful!! Admittedly, the decor is absolutely underwhelming. Still, it's casual, the staff are enthusiastic and helpful, and the food is top notch! This is precisely the kind of restaurant we need to support and enjoy! Looking forward to more hot soup over Edmonton's frigid winter!

If you're looking for comforting soup, fresh vermicelli bowls, or maybe salad rolls then this is the place to go! I have come her a few times now and the food is always fresh and delicious. The service is very prompt and friendly and the food always seems to come out quite fast as well. I'm a big fan of the fresh tofu salad rolls with peanut sauce as the flavour combo between mint/peanut/curry-tofu is really outstanding. The vermicelli bowl is also very satisfying (and hearty!) and was full of fresh vegetables. I'm not usually a big fan of vegan 'ham' but it was very well executed in this dish. I'll definitely be coming back!

The smaller tables were in and out much faster so you shouldn't have a problem getting back to work after lunch if there's only 2-3 of you. They've been on quite a turbulent journey to say the least. Die Pie first opened their doors downtown on Jasper Ave in 2017. Then the pandemic hit and threw everything into question and they ended up moving to 97th in the Boyle Street area in 2020. Then, sadly, later in 2020 they announced that Die Pie would be closing it's doors for good. It seemed that everything had come to an unfortunate and heart breaking end. But there was some hope when the pizzas became available at their sister business Seitans in the 5th Street Food Hall in 2021. ...And then in 2023, rising from the ashes, Die Pie opened once again, this time on 105th Street in Queen Mary Park. Nothing short of a roller coaster, I'm not sure how they've done it. However, their legion of devoted fans certainly wants their plant-based pizza revolution to continue. VUE Weekly named Die Pie # 1 Pizza (Classic) 2018 and # 1 Best Pizza (Thin Crust) 2018. Yes, the pizza is meatless but this is a place that can compete with all of the rest. You need to try it for yourself to believe it! I was so pleased to visit for the first time on a Saturday evening and I would totally describe the restaurant and location as "industrial-chic." They've got plenty of space with a fun tropical vibe from the pink-sided bar area to the pink-and-green frond print on the chairs. The best decor item of all, without a question, is the huge original Jasper Ave restaurant sign that now hangs inside. What a testament to their resiliency. There's a little stage area that must be great for live music and other such performances. Speaking of music, the tunes at Die Pie are absolute perfection and I found myself dancing and singing in my seat for the majority of my visit - we must have very similar taste in music. Our server was helpful and friendly, happy to give us the time that we needed to make our way through the extensive menu. There's quite a lot more than just pizza! I'm not much of a pop-drinker but I do enjoy a soda with pizza from time to time. I really like that Die Pie doesn't serve the mainstream brands and instead opts for Jarritos (which I love), Wild Brewing Kombucha, and Phillips Soda Works from Victoria. We chose a Speed King Craft Cola ($5.00) and an Intergalactic Root Beer ($5.00), both from Phillips. The art on the can alone is worth it. I really like a craft cola made with cane sugar a lot. You've probably heard people talk about Mexican cola and how it's a far superior product - and the cane sugar is why. Using cane sugar makes the flavour so much better. Speed King is made with actual kola nut as well as cane sugar, has a rich flavour, and somehow isn't too sweet. The Intergalactic was interesting because it actually tasted like real root beer. The amber colour is not typically expected and the flavour of licorice root, cloves, and cane sugar creates a beverage that tastes much more authentic. They both paired wonderfully with the pizza. The food menu involves a lot! You'll find a whole host of starters, fried chickun (which I believe is Seitans main thing, now available at Die Pie), pasta, and burgers. And of course there is pizza. A lot of pizza. I was excited to start my meal with some Bites (there are four types) which I remember very well from my 5th Street Food Hall visits. This time I chose the Kimchi Bites (Sourdough bites stuffed with chedda, extra virgin olive oil, sunflower parmesan, and housemade kimchi - $16.00) because they sound so unique. However, the chedda, donair, and pickle versions are excellent options as well. These little tender and twirly dough balls are served with two dips of your choice and they've got twelve to select from! Gochujang Dip seemed like an obvious pick and we also got Garlic Aioli Dip for a more cooling option. If you love Die Pie's soft and fluffy pizza dough (and you do) this is just another way to get more of it. Pungent, acidic kimchi is wrapped within the dough like a soft blanket. These bites had some spicy kick! Dip them in the gochujang for an even bigger punch! These are fun and easy to eat. However, if you're also ordering pizza it does mean that your meal will contain a lot of dough (which is not necessarily a bad thing). The main event is absolutely the California style pizza and with 18 different pies you certainly won't be wanting for choice. Each one is made from scratch using their signature hand-tossed sourdough crust which they make with local flour. And let me tell you: IT'S THE CRUST. I'm the type of person who doesn't always eat my crust - in most cases I have no desire to eat additional plain, tough bread. But once in a while there's the odd case when the dough itself is something special. Die Pie makes a dough so pillowy that you will find it in your dreams. But that's not all. On Thursdays they do Detroit style pizza, they can make gluten-
