I am not a vegetarian, but I do like Vegetables. Padmandadi does this well. The place itself is relaxing, and I love the family photos around the restaurant and the enormous Buddah statue. It is a lovely atmosphere to catch up with friends. Our server was polite and well mannered. They have a great lunch deal as well. I went with the Spicy Eggplant with coconut rice - Chinese eggplant quartered and stir-fried in a sweet and savory chili sauce. My friend chose this as well. We also started with the Roti Canai -Grilled Indonesian flatbread served with a curry dipping sauce. This is my favourite dish on the menu. I usually order this. Both dishes were excellent and fresh. I love the flakey roti and the dipping sauce has the right amount of curry in it. The eggplant was tasty as well and perfectly cooked. My boyfriend and I came here to meet up with friends. I've only heard good things about this place through my boyfriend but after spending one dinner here, I can see why. We got a bunch of entrees, I honestly can't remember every single thing we got but it all tasted delicious. We ordered the Lemon Chicken Prawns, Crispy Chicken Strips, the Curry Chicken, Dendeng, and a noodle dish that I forgot the name of. I really liked how everything was served family style. Everything I tasted was a hit. I loved the crisp and texture of the Chicken Strips, as well as the Lemon Chicken Prawns. The Curry Chicken was flavorful, creamy, and had a little kick from the spice but it was great. The Dendeng was great too, loved the sauce that covered it. I'm also really impressed by the different veggie meats they used in all of the dishes, they all tasted good. Service was fast and all the servers were so thoughtful and accommodating. We also met the owner and he was so kind. We had a good time at the end getting to know each other. From our time here, we were met with very down to earth people here. Pre-booked a spot for "owners birthday" all-day buffet as I have looked at this menu and could not narrow down what I wanted to try. Buffet is the way to go! We needed to put a $10 deposit down when making the reservation which was fine for me as I knew I wasn't going to bail. I like that on the website there are parking instructions. Ended up parking on a residential street (2hr limit) just west of the restaurant which worked well as 1 buffet time slot is 90minutes. We arrived on-time but there was a line-up to get in (several people had reservations, 1 wanted to order takeout at the counter, 1 wanted to get buffet takeout) but ALSO a line up to pay. And the same guy had to do it all - check people in and get people's bill and pay (pay at the front counter not at the table). This was quite inefficient but the guy did super well and the line did move. I think it was because they only have 1 computer and need it to book people at tables but also to ring up the bills - if business is good I would love to see 2 lines/2 computers going. Anyway we were seated once we got the counter and buffet was up and going already Not too bad of a line to get to the buffet. ALSO you can just pay for a take-put container and join the buffet line and you fill the container as full as you can and as long as the lid closes you are good to go. Foods and ratings: White rice: 10/10, fresh, white, never ran out Spring rolls: 8/10, great crisp but not as full of filling as I would have liked Deep-fried shrimp: 5/10, too much doughy breading Corn Fritter: 8/10, in a cute heart shape! but tasted like cream corn out of a can "Beef" and veg stir fry: 9/10, was not labelled as spicy but it was HOT, "meat" was sooo tender and delicious but too hot for my taste. Self serve both but also a waitress came around twice in the 70minutes we were there and refilled our glasses. We did not use the full 90minutes as we couldn't eat another bite! They also mentioned every 100g leftover is $2-3 extra but that it is donated to charity. Loved this to prevent waste. I love the idea that most are meat labelled but my meat-loving, Alberta beef-eating, classic-flavors-only father would probably not like the textures or flavors. This is a lovely restaurant, with a beautiful decor of Buddah Status, wall colors, and photography art. The service is polite, and filled with a good energy. They are quick to bring water, and get the dirty dishes. Note, for the buffet night, we did have to book a reservation, with a fee of $5.00 per seat, on top of the food bill... but it was totally worth it. The buffet here has a decent selection of amazing full of flavor and great texture vegan cuisine. Everything was so good during this visit that everyone at the table went for seconds. At work, we won a sustainable lunch for collecting the most interesting trash on world clean up day. This place was chosen. So the group of 6 of us had a wide variety of things. For apitizers, I thought the deep fried tofu was the best tofu experience I have had. It had a nice crispy outside that had a good texture that was better than most tofu I had. For ma8n I have a veritable stir fry with rice. It was pretty good, but I thought a little bland. It could have used something to give it a bit more snap. All 6 of us enjoyed our lunch. Which I would have thought a long shot when paring up 6 guys I'm construction and a vegan restaurant. Speaking of vegan, they king of keep the fact it is a vegan place low key. Food is great but DO NOT PREPAY OR ATTEND BUFFETS. Took a coworker and his family here for a buffet to celebrate. I arrived early in express intent to pay for the full meal (minus reservation fees already paid on his card as he reserved seats), and was told that was fine. I had to correct the server that one of our 5 person party was a child under 6yo. I was still charged the 6-12 yo price for this guest. The total plus tip came to $119.19. My partner and I left early, getting a thumbs up and nod from the server we had paid with and who had sat us and understood this to mean "your table's bill is settled, you're all good to go". I should have stayed, double checked and triple checked with the manager, Angela or her husband Wandy (or maybe someone else entirely - the company is extremely disorganized and cannot communicate between locations without pointing blame or fingers at each other and the customer. Godspeed to the Calgary location, I only hope Kasim is there). What was supposed to be a celebration of my co-worker's accomplishments turned into a humiliating incident that made me look like I stuck him and his young family with a $100+ bill! They charged my guest $101.86 (incl tip) on his own thank you meal. An extra $101.86 ON TOP OF THE ALREADY SETTLED TAB. Wandy says they've never had this issue before. My coworker provided me the explanation he was given - that only the card that had made the reservation could pay the bill (and yet NO ONE made to stop me or the many others who were NOT the reserving cardholders pay in advance). When I called for a refund, the downtown location was closed. Understanding both locations in Edmonton to be run by the same family owners, I called the Southside to advise them of the situation and let them know I'd be visiting the Downtown location when they opened on Tuesday. Between the 3 people I spoke to from Padmanadi's, only the Southside location employee who took my regular call was polite. Wandy originally tried to tell me that a cash handover downtown was the best refund possibility. The next day, I got a curt email saying I shouldn't have left a review or tried reaching out as soon as I realized what had happened (Mon) and instead waited until the downtown location was open. Tuesday morning, I went to the downtown location expecting to meet Wandy and settle the refund. I met his wife, Angela, instead and she was dismissive, rude, and patronizing. She insisted I leave without any refund, told me her husband Wandy was busy with their kids, and would call me when he was ready for a visit at the Southside. Wandy instead called me before I had even left Padmanadi's downtown to reiterate I would only be refunded the extra charge (my bad for saying I could understand if they needed to keep my larger payment of $119 - this company makes bank but they'll still grab for your cash). He continued to state I was unreasonable for submitting a review before contacting anyone, but also said I was wrong for contacting the South location in the closure of the Downtown one... Which doesn't make sense. I've been frequenting this place for over a decade. I love their food and the OG owner. He introduced me to vegetarian food and was always so happy and friendly. With Kasim, Padmanadi's felt like family. Now, with Wandy and Angela, it feels like a place you're likely to get scammed and nickled and dimed at. As someone who enjoys meat sometimes I shy away from vegan restaurants mostly due to texture but after hearing glowing reviews we decided to stop by when we were in town. Luckily, they were doing a special buffet day that day showcasing many of their items. They weren't kidding about their curry "chicken" being a star item. This was such a great dinning experience. I'd never been to this location before. A friend told me about their buffet for Good Friday so we decided to check it out. They had so many delicious options for dinner and dessert! My favorite was the ginger beef and the yellow curry chicken. The desserts we're exellent I tried the chocolate moose which was light and very satisfying for every chocolate lover. It was nice to try the buffet because now when I go back I can order better. The service was great and the restaurant is clean and welcoming. The price is reasonable for the buffet however I'm not sure how often they do it. One of the staff said they also do buffet take out where you fill the container provided. Overall a delightful experience and I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for the next buffet night. read more

Went to Padmandi for a Christmas dinner with the family. My husband and I had never before and were a little skeptical (big meat eaters!). That being said, this restaurant is unbelievably delicious! Everything we ate tasted exactly as described. If you didn't know it wasn't real meat, you wouldn't know the difference. Padmanadi is a restaurant that you'll hear rave reviews about constantly, to the point where you'll just have to check it out for yourself. Open for many years and a fixture of Central McDougall, it's almost impossible that you haven't paid them a visit at least once. Padmanadi has even recently opened a second southside location, which only makes their delicious food more accessible. VUE Weekly named them #1 Best Vegetarian 2018 and #1 Best Vegan 2018, while Edmonton Journal called Padmanadi the Best Vegan/Vegetarian Restaurant 2020. This should come as no surprise because they have practically been dominating the vegan/vegetarian scene since the day that their doors first opened. So what's the deal at Padmanadi? What is the food all about? Owned and operated by Indonesian immigrants, they serve Indonesian, Chinese, Thai, and Indian plant-based dishes. Everything is vegan. But let me assure you that this food will completely change the way that you think about the vegan experience. As an omnivore myself, you will always hear me say "if all vegan food was this delicious, I would never eat meat again" when I visit Padmanadi. The original restaurant is not situated in the greatest area of the city, north east of downtown. But don't make the mistake of letting the location deter you - everything else more than makes up for it! The vibrant and bright restaurant lights up the street and welcomes you inside. I've always adored their beautiful and fresh space, and it's big too! Every aspect is well thought out and perfectly appropriate, combining the feelings of Southeast Asia and veganism to a tee. The gorgeous bamboo wood, pops of colour, and the centerpiece of the dining room; a massive Buddha statue adorned with flowers. The staff is extremely friendly and welcoming, making it quite apparent that this is the type of place that really cares about its' people - staff and customers alike. The menu is extensive and you almost have to remind yourself that none of the dishes contain animal products - especially when you find yourself face to face with the "vegetarian meat dishes" section. Confusing? Just keep reminding yourself that there is no actual meat within the restaurant and let them show you their wizardry. I have personally visited the restaurant many times in the past, in fact you'll find them listed in the Worldwide Faves section of this website. However, it had been many years since my last visit and I was very excited to revisit some of my favourite flavours. Seated at a comfortable table, I looked over the familiar menu and didn't notice too many changes. It was a relief! I ordered all of my old stand-bys and even tried something new. First, always, had to be the Crispy Chicken Strips (Veggie chicken fried to perfection & served with homemade hot sauce - $10.95). My absolute favourite thing on the menu. How I had missed these! An instant craving, you might never guess in a million years that you aren't eating real chicken. Except that it's better than chicken. Every piece is moist and impossibly tender on the inside. The outside is coated in the most wonderfully crispy, crunchy and salty batter. The sweet and spicy chili sauce has a great zing to it, an ideal accompaniment. There is only one word to describe these magic morsels: ADDICTIVE. You have to try these just so that you can be in on the amazingness. Next, our main courses arrived and I had to stick to more of my old favourites, starting with the Ginger Beef (Soy beef strips, sweet bell peppers and julienne carrots in a tangy ginger sauce. Our best seller - $15.95). We also grabbed an order of Coconut Rice ($2.75) to go along with everything because rice is life. I especially love the sweetness of coconut rice and was happy to see it as an option on the menu. It looks just like ginger beef... But it's not. The crispy pieces of not-beef are tossed in a thick glaze that actually tastes like real, fresh ginger. The vegetables are bright and full of flavour. And you'll find yourself wondering why you would ever bother ordering "real" ginger beef when you could just enjoy this instead (and feel less like trash afterwards). We also ordered the Curry Chicken (Our signature dish! Our famous homemade rich and delicious yellow curry coconut with veggie chicken, potatoes and vegetables - $16.95), which I truthfully don't think I'd ever tried before. I was glad to get something new into the mix and this seemed like the exact right dish to bring into the fold. This dish packs a spicy kick but boy is it delicious! The curry itself is velvety smooth, full of sweet and spicy flavour. The potatoes are incredibly tender. But it's the not-chicken that is the real star. Tried this restaurant awhile back with a friend as it was close to her class location and I've enjoyed trying things from the restaurant when at the Taste of Edmonton. Full disclosure - I'm a meat eater but I do eat & cook vegetarian because I care for my friend's and try to make it less stressful picking places to eat. So I'm not new to this food selection. The waitress attending to us was knowledgeable about the menu. From our discussion with her, we selected some smaller dishes that would be good to share. I really enjoyed the cauliflower bites as they were the right consistency between crispy outside and cooked inside of the cauliflower. There was a sauce that added the extra amount of flavour to the dish. The veggie chicken in the king pao chicken was interesting. I knew immediately I wasn't eating chicken because of the texture but the flavours of the dish worked nicely together. Enough that I could ignore the texture to eat the dish. If you're a texture person too, then don't select the chicken satay as I think it would be even more noticeable. The ginger (soy) beef I wasn't wild about. Even with the tasty side of rice we ordered, it didn't really do much palate wise. I was also surprised to see it lacked quantity of veggies. Even though the waitresses were awesome and refilled our large water glasses (4 times as we felt dehydrated), the food and the large amount of water didn't give me the happy full feeling. It's a confusing feeling to have after eating a sizeable meal. I was intrigued by some other parts of their menu and if I was to find myself here again, I most likely would enjoy a massive bowl of soup. As for the selection of 3 stars, I found that even though the restaurant is large, the layout is something that takes away from enjoying the food here. Seating people so close forces you to be part of other table's conversations. The wait staff can't properly reach the tables due to this layout during supper rush. We watched them struggle to serve as more people were seated. At one point the server had to come at a completely different direction (through the roped off ramp and pilar area) to even get to our table which meant she reached behind the table that was literally beside us. This situation made us feel uncomfortable. Also, I wouldn't advise bringing anyone here that struggles with hearing. It was too loud to have a proper discussion. These things made us feel like we should rush through our meal so we didn't have to be there anymore. Lastly, I struggled to find parking. I don't carry a lot of cash on me and therefore have even less change. So if deciding to park at this lot, remember to bring your coins. There are a few spots along the street, but consider yourself lucky if you're able to grab those. Honestly going a bit further north you can find free parking and better walking situation to the restaurant. Came here for their last buffet meal in February and was left seriously impressed! My coworker and I got here around 5pm and it was already bustling and full. We had to wait about 15 min for a table. Line up for the buffet reached almost the other end of the restaurant. Thankfully the wait was worth it as everything I tried from the buffet that day was excellent. I picked the satay skewers with peanut sauce, which I always get at Taste of Edmonton. You can check my pics, but my absolutely favourite was the Dendeng recommended by our server. You should definitely order it. All the sauces on the dishes here are so amazing. It's such a treat. For a table of 4 adults, and only 18 month old that has quite the appetite, our bill was $80 with leftovers. I was literally stuffed, and forgot we still had to get gelato. Loved this place and will be back. Allergies to eggs and nut? No problem. This delicious, tropical Asian fusion inspired restaurant serves vegan dishes. You won't believe that the "meat" dishes are actually soy based ingredients. So yummy. We started with an iced Lychee drink to go with an order of the Roti and the Crispy Chicken strips. The strips were soy based goodies fried with a light and crunchy coating, served with a medium spiced homemade hot sauce. I think it's a must try. The Roti was served with a curry. On its own, the Roti was ok. That said, given that it had no eggs (and the vast majority of Roti's I have had in order restaurant do have eggs - which is a hassle) - it was a great way to try Roti with no egg issue. The curry it was served with was savory, flavourful with a mild yellow spice, and plentiful. The Iced Lychee was so good too! For entrees we had the Ginger Beef and the Curry Chicken. The Ginger Beef - wow! Tastes like a great ginger beef from a higher end Chinese restaurant, minus a heavy grease feeling and not overwhelmed with spicy heat. It was so good - I was quite full and had to stop myself from eating it. Curry Chicken was ok. In comparison to the Ginger Beef, Crispy Chicken, and Roti - I'm sure there is another entree to be had at "that level." We also split a bowl of rice amongst three people. Desserts we split a Raspberry Lemonade Sorbet which was devoured, and a sweet and melt-in-your-mouth Chocolate Lava Cake. Super impressed with both. The restaurant is family owned and has a lot of soul. The owner personally thanked us for coming. Our server was friendly, attentive, intelligent, and hospitable.
