Update: I contacted them through ig and told them about this. Customer service was excellent and they were apologetic and said that batch was incorrectly made. ------------------------- The bangsilog was okay. So as the beef pares mami. The tapsilog however was very peppery and my mouth is still burning. I don't eat spicy and peppery food. The beef had TOO MUCH pepper. I only had three spoonfuls, can't eat anymore.

I've been a fan of Filistix for a long time But I've only ever eaten at their University location. I went to Filistix for downtown dining week this year And I was not disappointed. The sent meal for downtown dining week had three courses. There was also a pandesal Bread to start with served with a butter that taste better than just normal butter. They explained that they heat it to caramelize it. It was delicious. The first course was seared scallops in a sinigang broth. The scallops were done well and not over cooked at all. I shared the two entrée options with my dining companion. There was a grilled lobster tail on a creamy risotto and a steak in a kare kare peanut sauce Served with an Ube mash. both dishes were great. My favorite course was dessert. Dessert was Ube and mango crepes. This dessert was so good but I was so full from the other courses I had a very positive experience here service was great and the people that work there are very passionate about what they are doing which is great to see. Will definitely be coming again.

At home with my Christmas Noche Buena Feast for Two!

I'm very familiar with the quality Filipino food of Filistix. My work friends and I often enjoy their rice bowls for lunch. We usually go to the Filistix located in the Student's Union Building, on the University of Alberta campus. Today was my first time to try out some food from their downtown location. I was the super lucky winner of a Filistix Christmas Noche Buena (good night) feast for two. It was a contest Filistix had via Instagram. I was very excited to try out this special meal! I lined up outside the downtown location. The restaurant was closed for Christmas Eve but was open from 3-6pm for feast pick up. I had been instructed to come at 5:30pm to pick up my meal. When I arrived, I saw quite a few people in line. I waited in line for about 30 minutes. Only one person at a time could enter the restaurant due to social distancing/Covid precautions. When it was my turn, I was warmly greeted by Marc. I told him I had won the Instagram contest. I was given a bag with two feast meals inside. I was also given a card for a 10% discount on my next purchase. Marc was friendly and I loved how he was willing to pose while I took some pictures! When I arrived at home, I was able to see what I had won. The first meal was tender Beef Short Rib Calderetta (in tomato sauce with potatoes, carrots and fresh herbs) and the second meal was Pinakbet (vegetable stew with tomatoes, eggplant, long beans and bitter melon). I was also given sides dishes: Ube (purple yam) and truffle mashed potatoes, ginger scallion fried noodles, Atsara pickles (daikon, carrot, jicama, and red peppers) and green beans. Everything was D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S!! I happily devoured this meal. The flavours were so good!!! Filistix has fast, casual and yummy Filipino cuisine. If you're in the downtown area, I recommend trying out their food. I strongly advise supporting this local business!

Pork head and BBQ pork belly

Came here with some co-workers to check it out and we were not disappointed! It's a Filipino place which has a smaller lunch menu and then a larger sit-down dinner selection. We ordered 6 dishes to share: the chicken adobo, BBQ pork belly, a lemon chicken dish, "pork head", and two noodle dishes. The clear winner by far was the chicken adobo - delicious and we even finished up all the sauce poured over rice. Would definitely order this again. The other dishes were decent but the chicken adobo was really outstanding. For dessert I tried the pandan creme brulee and it was delicious - pandan is a leafy plant that gives the dessert a slightly nutty/floral flavour, fairly subtle, and it worked very well with the creme brulee custard. It wasn't too sweet but was definitely smooth and creamy. Co-worker who tried the banana spring rolls was also impressed. Overall good prices and tasty food, would definitely go back again. If it's your first time, you can't go wrong with the chicken adobo and some rice.

Tried the noche buena Christmas feast and there were some disappointments but a lot of highlights. Enjoyed the beef caldoretta because it is a rich beef stew with peppers. The sauce of the stew was full of flavour and seasoned perfectly. The atsara is a side dish of fresh pickled cabbage which was tangy and crunchy and would have perfectly accompanied the lechon roast pork belly. Unfortunately they were sold out of the lechon. The green beans side dish was cooked perfectly to keep the crisp texture of the beans. Nothing amazing but well executed. They sold out of a few other side options and replaced them with other options. The mashed potatoes with ube was interesting and purple but definitely didn't seem to have any truffle oil. Waiting outside in the cold for half an hour isn't ideal especially for take out which wasn't very hot and had to be warmed up once we got home. This is my first time eating here and there were some good flavours but I'll probably try their regular menu rather than the large set meals that cost $35-$45.

    Indonesian Kolak

This restaurant definitely is an Asian fusion restaurant not truly Southeast Asian food based. If you want to have an authentic Southeast Asian foods, this is not the place. Garlic Fried Rice was ok but it wasn't extraordinary. Very similar to regular Chinese fried rice. I tasted a better Filipino garlic fried rice in the past. Green Papaya Salad was too bland. They miss the sweet, slightly spicy, salty and sour balance that are the character tastes in most Green Papaya Salad in Southeast Asia. The Kolak dessert was terrible. By the look, it didn't look the normal kolak in Indonesia. The taste was like someone just dumped a can of evaporated milk and heated-up. Then mixed with slices of banana and raw sweet potatoes. Traditionally, kolak has the sweetness from coconut sugar, richness from coconut milk and fragrant aroma from pandan leaves. The server was trying to argue that coconut milk that was used for kolak. Meanwhile both of us came from 2 different countries that use lots coconut milk in the cooking. From the look and taste, we right away knew that evaporated milk was being used at that time. I know it's a fusion restaurant but giving a raw sweet potatoes in kolak was a disappointment. Will I go back? I might but I have to try different dishes before I decided not to go back.

    South Pacific Coconut Chicken

Friendly fast service during the lunch hour downtown. Ordered the South Pacific Chicken Coconut Curry which was hot and fresh. For $12, the chicken consisted of one palm-sized piece of chicken - so value-wise, would be nice if the portion was a bit larger. The chicken however was cooked to tenderness and the sauce was lovely. You order at the front, take a seat and grab your own utensils and water, etc. Space was bright and modern Also tried a slice of their banana bread as I can never resist it, but it was just okay - too sweet for my liking and slightly drier than anticipated.

The food is great and some of the works are nice except for the young lady that wanted to rise her voice and call my wife names in her language I don't think we will be back if your looking for a good hot pot place that doesn't make you tip. As a large group we were disappointed in this place. For a large group ordering is a mess. Bc there's just one sheet of paper and food is just plopped on the table and servers don't tell us what it is. The nine of us were really disappointed in this meal. As our sliced meats came almost an hour after our soups served. And veggies basically came 5 min before that. Half our meal was missing sliced meats and veggies. We ordered mussels clams and oysters and we never saw any of it despite complaining. We ended up getting the oysters very last about 1.5 hours into our meal. Requests to refill waters was ignored and for 9 of us only 7 water provided! It was really weird service and maybe bc it was a large group they didn't care bc they automatically add the tip to the bill. I'll avoid this place. Service and portions have gone significantly down and the entire experience was ruined based on how the food was served. There shouldn't be such a long wait in-between meat/veggies and seafood. Not at all worth the $45 we ended up paying each for our meal because of the automatic tip for the shittiest service I've had in chinatown. Avoid at all costs! Go elsewhere.

It is a lovely atmosphere to catch up with friends. Our server was polite and well mannered. They have a great lunch deal as well. I went with the Spicy Eggplant with coconut rice - Chinese eggplant quartered and stir-fried in a sweet and savory chili sauce. My friend chose this as well. We also started with the Roti Canai -Grilled Indonesian flatbread served with a curry dipping sauce. This is my favourite dish on the menu. I usually order this. Both dishes were excellent and fresh. I love the flakey roti and the dipping sauce has the right amount of curry in it. The eggplant was tasty as well and perfectly cooked. It came with rice (we chose coconut rice for an extra dollar) and a spring roll. The spring roll was crunchy and filled with veggies. All together a great meal.

The Curry Chicken was flavorful, creamy, and had a little kick from the spice but it was great. The Dendeng was great too, loved the sauce that covered it. It's wonderful to have so many options available and one of those is Kazoku Ramen in the west end area of Glenwood. The Edmonton Food Faves We Crave 2022 list named this restaurant as one of their Favourite Date Night spots and I was very excited to find out how they compare to the other big ramen shops in town. Visiting on a Monday evening, the restaurant was busy and bustling, indicative of it's popularity. Almost every table remained occupied for the duration of my visit. The location isn't exactly the greatest part of the city, however you'll find them in a strip mall directly next door to perennial favourite Bucas & Pastas (have you had the pasticcio??). Kazoku is immediately recognizable by their red awning and this theming remained excellent on the inside. Stepping through the door the aroma of broth tantalized my senses and I couldn't wait to taste the food. My eye was drawn to the incredible mural on the wall, which I absolutely loved!! It's of a city skyline with an adorable cartoonish Godzilla eating a naruto (a type of fish cake). The artwork is striking and looks amazing with the red lanterns hanging throughout the restaurant and dark wooden beams. They've done a wonderful job of creating an amazing atmosphere that you wouldn't necessarily expect from a strip mall! Kazoku means family in Japanese and this family business strives to only serve food that they would serve to their own family. The focus is on authentic ramen made with the freshest ingredients, creating delicious melodies of tastes and colours. Our server was prompt and efficient but I did find her to be quite curt and uninterested in answering many questions or offering recommendations. I was happy to order a Japanese Cream Soda (Melon flavour soda with a scoop of vanilla ice cream - $6.50) to drink, a beverage that I've seen on Japanese menus before and was happy to find here. The colour alone is a lot of fun and we enjoyed slurping on the deep green liquid. The soda tasted sort of citrusy to me and not as much like melon. But when you get the ice cream in the mix it's all very sweet and joyful. (An ideal treat for kids.) Next, we grabbed an order of Edamame (Soy beans sprinkled with coarse sea salt - $4.50) because you can't go wrong with some tasty beans. Bright green, well-cooked, and nicely salted. We happily popped these into our mouths and enjoyed the tender beans within. Edamame always feels like snacking, except in a healthy way. The menu features several types of appetizers and tempura but I zeroed in on the Takoyaki (Fried wheat balls with octopus in the center topped with tonkatsu sauce, mayo, nori, bonito - $13.00), a favourite of mine. Complete with dancing bonito on top, these takoyaki balls appeared to be entirely legit. I am certain that the restaurant is using a specialized takoyaki pan, which is what creates their perfectly spherical shape. Biting into the golden-crispy balls, these were almost identical to what I'd experienced on the streets of Osaka. Crisp on the outside but very soft on the inside with a piece of tender octopus hidden within. The sauces on top added a lot of flavour as did the shaved bonito. These were really good and one of the highlights of the meal for me. Ramen, of course, is Kazoku's specialty and with twelve types on the menu they've got a ramen for everyone. Heavy to lighter broths are offered and the menu does a good job of describing the type of broth to expect in each. I couldn't help but notice some stark similarities between the ramen at Kazoku and the ramen offered at Japanese ramen chain Santouka (my favourite ramen of all-time), including the appearance of shio ramen (my favourite!). They also have a chili goma which I usually love, full of spicy chili oil. However, for my first visit I felt that I should experience the Kazoku (Char siu, full soft-boiled egg, nori, bamboo shoots, corn, black fungus, bean sprouts, toasted sesame, green onion, naruto - $18.50), the restaurant's namesake bowl. Unexpectedly, the server asked if we wanted pork belly or shoulder for our char siu and I have never encountered this option before. Looking for some guidance on which to choose, the server offered little (none) information on the difference between the two. We chose pork belly as that seemed to be the cut of char siu that we were more familiar with. Made with a lighter pork broth, the depth of flavour was alright but I did find myself longing for something a bit more robust. I wasn't all that impressed with the char siu overall. As a BBQ pork, I found the slices incredibly thin (they should be quite thick!) and completely lacking in caramelized BBQ char. The meat was underdone and full of wet, uncooked fat. The noodles were great; nice and loose and tender. The ajitama (egg) was nicely prepared with an ideal jammy yolk, although a bit more marinaded seasoning would have been
