After a long day of travels, our family and friends decided to have our late lunch here. We had a party of nine and they were accommodating to our large group. As soon as we walked into the restaurant you could smell the food, and it smells so good so we were excited to eat. We ordered an assortment of fried rice, clay pot, baked, appetizers, and drinks. All of which were pretty tasty and came out quickly. The servers are really nice and understanding to help us get all of our orders in together. Additionally the food was priced pretty decently not too expensive in comparison to other restaurants we've had in the area. Would recommend if you're looking to try some Hong Kong or Cantonese food. Always hits the spot.

Price $-$$ Food - got 3 combos: pan fried chicken fillet with scallion ricw bowl (chose hong kong style soup, and vegetables), korean style grilled pork chop rice bowl (chose hk style imitated shark fin soup, and extraordinary stinky tofu), and chinese style pork sausage with chicken clay pot rice combo (comes traditonal chinese soup and vegetables). Ordered a cold milk tea for an extra $2. I wouldn't get the stinky tofu again - it wasn't at all lol, more like deep fried firm tofu. The cold milk tea was worth its price. It's quite a large drink. The rest of the food was good. It was large enough portions to feed 4 of us. Service - mediocre, they are quite a busy location so it takes a little more effort to ask them for things. I suggest asking for what you need when they bring you food/drinks. There are a lot of hong kong style food, but also has some fusion foods Ambiance - a small place with a lot of hong kong representation pieces. Instead of labelling the tables by number, it's by hong kong locations. Overall: 3.75/5 - we went back 2 days in a row haha. If you're in the area, try it out !

We are so happy to have found a great Chinese restaurant on the south side of Edmonton! They have quite a large menu, with a great variety of dishes! We thoroughly enjoyed everything we ordered. The staff were friendly and always came to top up our water and tea. The restaurant is bright and well setup, also got busy very quickly! We definitely plan to come back and try more!

I've heard so many great things about 852, but this was my first time trying it - and let me tell you, the hype is real. This Hong Kong cafe on the southside serves up soooo many delicious dishes in a newly renovated & modern dining room. Not being super familiar with HK food myself, we tried dishes I wouldn't usually order and we loved it! I'd say HK style food is similar to Chinese but slightly different. There is a western influence in some baked cheesy dishes, for example. The menu at 852 has everything from sandwiches to elaborate seafood feasts & fresh bbq - it's truly got something for every taste.

Everyone is pretty familiar with so-called Chinese food (which is a pretty broad term, to say the least). Which is why I was excited to try a restaurant that specializes in something a little bit more specific. Opening in 2012, 852 Hong Kong Café is a restaurant that serves cuisine from this small area of China (which they're technically still a part of, albeit with a large amount of autonomy). What's with the "852" in the restaurant's name? That's Hong Kong's country code. Voted Best Restaurant South of the Whitemud by CBC Edmonton's Best Restaurants 2019, I was excited (and somewhat clueless) to try this Steinhauer (south end) restaurant. I visited on a Saturday evening and recognized the building right away as one of the old Tropika locations. It's a large, stand-alone restaurant with plenty of parking. Inside, I was pleasantly greeted with quite a modern and bright space. The tables are made of light-coloured wood, the chairs are light grey, and there are cute accents of green apples around the space. It feels incredibly fresh and easy-going. I liked the authentic decor items a lot but overall the atmosphere feels more updated and less like a stereotype. Seated at a comfortable booth, we began to comb over the (slightly scary) menu. First of all, the menu is written entirely in Chinese with the English translations underneath. I love this. I also adored the anime-style characters on the menu which added a lot of fun. But also, there seems to be several menus. There's a physical menu which got handed to us, plus a specials menu, plus a menu online which seemed to contain different items. This felt like a lot and I was worried that I would order the "wrong things." It was a little bit confusing. We were also promptly delivered complimentary glasses of jasmine tea by a friendly server. Such a nice touch that I always appreciate. I also wanted to try the Hong Kong Style Milk Tea ($3.00) which can be ordered either hot or cold. This tea was quite strong and I liked adding a bit of sugar to take the edge off. Milk tea in Asia fills me with joy and this version brought back some nice memories. At this point I was double fisting beverages and ready to make some decisions. There are some things that surprised me on the menu and it's probably because my knowledge of Hong Kong-style cuisine is so limited. For example, the HK style borscht, which I assume has to do with China's proximity to Russia. But also the many spaghetti dishes on the menu. In the end, we ordered a bunch of different dishes and hoped for the best. There was a section of the online menu called "21st Century Hong Kong Dishes" and I found that most of the items that sounded the most interesting to me came from this section. Maybe these are considered more current versions of what the people in Hong Kong eat? From this section I found the Champagne Crispy Prawn Balls ($28.88). These sounded fancy and I liked seeing that the plating was done with style and care. Eight golden prawn balls were covered in an ultra sticky-sweet sauce. These were very easy to pop into my mouth and I found the crunch of the batter to be very satisfying. The prawn inside was large and meaty. I'm not really sure how "champagne" was incorporated into the dish but I loved the flavourful sticky sauce. This was one of my favourite dishes because it was enjoyable to eat and suited the restaurant's vibe really well. If there was one dish that I did know to order, it was the Pipa Duck ($21.00 for half) from the "Traditional HK BBQ" part of the menu. This is the dish that most people talk about when it comes to this restaurant. I also loved that they have a window to the kitchen in the restaurant where you can see all of the ducks hanging, much like a shop window in Chinatown. Served with the glistening, lacquered skin that this duck is so famous for, it's impossible not to want to devour every esthetically pleasing bite. However, one thing that I wanted to learn more about is the difference between Peking duck and Pipa duck. They seem pretty similar, although I did note the absence of the steamed soft pancakes that you get served with Peking duck. As it turns out, a pipa is a Chinese string instrument and Pipa duck is named for its resemblance to this instrument. Arguably crispier than Peking duck, Pipa duck is splayed open before being roasted which increases the bird's surface area and produces an extra crunchy exterior. Apparently only a handful of Chinese restaurants serve this specialized duck dish in Hong Kong, which makes it pretty remarkable that we can get it right here in Edmonton. Served with a thick hoisin dipping sauce, I began dunking my duck and marveling at the tender meat. The fat was rendered down wonderfully and of course the crispy skin was the star of the dish. Some of the pieces were difficult to eat if they contained bones or if the skin was just too hard. However, this duck seemed expertly prepared and I loved having the opportunity to try it. Visited this place after a very long period of time (Covid). To my surprise the menu has completely changed and it is really no longer a "Hong kong" cafe as I remember it. A lot of the nostalgic favourites have been removed in favour of a more trendy fare. Top of the list is clay pot. I'm not sure if I'm convinced that this trend is the best but I'm definitely convinced that the clay pot they serve is really yummy. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because I miss the good old favourites.

I've heard many good things about @852hkcafeyeg for years now, but this was my first time here. I've seen @yeg.baking posting about the lunch she had here a while back and it looked delicious! They have so many items to choose from on the main menu, but I opted for their lunch menu, $20 for a soup, a side and a main. I of course went with the Fish Fillet Claypot Rice with Hong Kong Borscht and a side of greens, sauteed with garlic. My buddy had the same thing, but went with the curry fish balls as the side. The fish was cooked perfectly and the sweet soy sauce had a hint of ginger in it, pour that over the fish and rice and just mix it all up and eat. I really enjoyed the crispy rice at the bottom of the bowl, and as the sauce work its way to the bottom of the bowl and the crispy rice soaking up the sauce, taking a bite of that crispy rice was so good! I've never had Hong Kong Borscht before, but it had chunks of beef with carrots and I believe potatoes in a tomato broth, so good! I'm going to try and make this at home soon. Nothing special about the greens sauteed with garlic, but I choose it because it was a healthier option. The greens was sauteed very well and still had a nice bite to it. Overall, I had an excellent meal, but I just wish it wasn't so far south of the city. Lol. Maybe I just don't know, but I'm sure there are other HK Café restaurants on the Northside side that serves up something similar?

Spicy deep fried tofu, extra spicy.

This is my favourite restaurant in Edmonton. I come here all the time. Real Chinese food. I just wish they were open for breakfast. My go to dishes: - Drink: Iced Ying Yang. Half coffee, half tea, sweetened with milk. Trust me. This is the most delicious iced caffeine fix. Better than a iced capp. - vegetarian dish: spicy deep fried tofu, extra spicy - rice dish: ying yang rice. Fried rice base. Half is covered in a shrimp cream sauce, the other half a tomato based sauce with chicken. - meat dish: Peking style pork chops. Saucy fried pork chops. - noodle dish: seafood chow mein. Noodles are part crispy, part softened by the sauce. - soup: beef brisket noodle soup. So tender here most of the time. I love it. So many other good things but I need to eat now. Try this place out.

I haven't been here for a while. Last night we came back here and surprisingly found they had updated their menu. We ordered the cod which is one of the new dishes on their menu. The fish was fresh and tasty! Not big portion though, but definitely enough for two people. The sauce of the fish fillet was little bit light, but it is good enough to emphasize the taste of fish. Can't wait to go back to try their other new dishes! Ps. the service was good. The waitress was patient and was able to answer my millions of questions. I would give $$ for the price if the range is $ to $$$$$.

Hong Kong style french toast. It has syrup on the side

Went here for a late lunch with my sister today. The front/parking area is underwhelming but don't let it fool you! I'll start off by saying that you definitely get more than what you pay for for the food here. As soon as we were seated, we were given glasses of hot tea, which was welcome in this cold weather. It wasn't busy when we came in so there was plenty of space. The wait staff was very attentive and nice, and managed to see when we needed refills on our water before we even realized it. I ordered two things: the Hong Kong style french toast and the mapo tofu with rice. The french toast was perfectly fluffy and delicious, especially with the syrup served on the side. It seems that they combined 2 pieces of bread and cooked it together, and the pocket it makes in the middle is perfect for the syrup to pool in. The mapo tofu with rice I asked for milder spice because my stomach was sensitive today. They accommodated my request no problem. The flavour was pretty good, and they were generous with their tofu and vegetables. The mapo tofu with rice actually had a pretty big serving so I managed to eat only a third of it and ended up bringing the rest home. So unless you have a big appetite, this dish is more to share between maybe two people than just have one person eat it. Would definitely recommend!

I've driven by Golden Rice Bowl thousands of times and somehow it has always been a restaurant that…read morehas eluded me. Well no more! I finally made my way to this iconic Calgary Trail North spot that is beloved for dim sum on a Saturday evening and was excited to sample all of their small plates! In fact, the Edmonton Journal named Golden Rice Bowl as the Best/Favourite Dim Sum Restaurant 2020, 2022, and 2023. It was high time that I experienced it for myself! You'll find Golden Rice Bowl in a strip mall-style plaza that is full of various businesses and yes, if you've been an Edmontonian for any amount of time, you've driven by regularly. The restaurant looks large from the outside with huge red lettering alerting passersby to the dim sum within. The inside is just as expansive, boasting a huge open dining area. I noticed that they have various partitions and the ability to section off parts of the room if needed - likely for private events. As with many Chinese restaurants, you are immediately greeted by a sizable (and very clean!) aquarium filled with beautiful tropical fish. However, I was even more impressed by the aquariums at the very back of the restaurant - these ones filled with live fish and seafood for the kitchen. It doesn't get much fresher than that! The room is ornate but not overdone. Bright red paint on the walls is accented by golden decor items such as gilded dragons with glowing eyes. The ceiling drips with crystal chandeliers and the space is filled with a sea of tables in various sizes. This is the type of place where large generational families come to gather, sitting around huge round tables with a signature lazy susan in the center of each one. Once seated we were served a pot of Chinese Tea ($1.50 each) and began to peruse the menu. (No, the tea was not included.) I liked that all of the dishware was matching, from the teapot to the bowls. Golden Rice Bowl is known for their dim sum but they also boast a complete and extensive menu of general Chinese food. There's a lot to choose from! However, on my visit the plan was to stick to the dim sum menu only, which is available all day long (even though it is traditionally eaten as brunch). Originating in the south of China, dim sum features a wide variety of small, bite-sized dishes typically served in steamer baskets or on small plates. It's pretty similar to the Spanish concept of tapas. Many dim sum restaurants use trolley carts to parade their offerings around, however a more modern practice is to provide guests with a checklist menu that you fill out and hand back to your server. Golden Rice Bowl does neither of these things and the server simply writes down your order in typical fashion. The dim sum menu is two pages long and offers over fifty items! Some of the dishes were larger, family-style plates which makes sense to round out the meal especially at dinnertime. The only issue is that there are no prices listed on the dim sum menu so you sort of just have to hope for the best? Our feast began with an order of Wor Wonton Soup ($29.95). At first we assumed the this would be served as single servings but the server pointed out that it would come as one big soup to share. Very glad that he clarified this! I was very impressed by our gracious and attentive server who portioned the bowls of soup for each of us at our table. Giant in size, this was much more than a basic wonton soup with a couple of dumplings floating around! This flavourful version was packed full with big pieces of chicken, pork, and shrimp. Plus tons of vegetables, and yes, of course wonton dumplings containing a meaty filling. Every ingredient was bright and fresh and I was glad to get some veggies into the meal because dim sum can be quite a "brown dinner." The other larger dish that we ordered was the Ginger Beef ($29.95), a dish invented in Calgary with an interesting history. Certainly not traditional, ginger beef is a quintessential Canadian Chinese dish that was invented in the 1970s. Deep fried strips of beef are coated in a dark, sweet sauce and it's quite delicious. The tanginess of the sauce is so addictive and the texture of the beef is satisfying. The version at GRB is quite good, however the best ginger beef that I've ever tasted was at Emerald Garden Restaurant in Calgary. Then it was time for the actual dim sum! Little plates incoming!! We really wanted to try the Pan Fried Taro Root with Pork Sausage but were unfortunately informed that they did not have any available. Our server suggested the Pan Fried Chinese Turnip with Pork Sausage ($7.95) instead, which did look somewhat similar. (The fact that the dim sum menu shows images of every item is very helpful!) Unfortunately, this turned out to be the least favourite dish of the night just because the texture was really challenging. These cakes were extremely soft and mushy. I actually did enjoy the flavour of the turnip and sausage but the mushiness was a bit too difficult to get around.

I went there after years. My friends suggested this restaurant for Dim Sum. We went there as early…read moreas they opened. The customer service was great and the place was big and nicely decorated. The food was fantastic and as amenities matter of fact, the best dim sum in Edmonton. We loved and enjoyed every single item that we ordered. The experience was fantastic and we will definitely go back there again. I highly recommend this restaurant!

Unfortunately, I can NOT give this establishment zero star…read more I went to place for dinner with my fam. I always dislike this resto for years. My fam loves this place. I have NO ideal why. We ordered salt and pepper crab. The server advise that the market price for crab was $48per/lbs. The server brought the 2.5lb crab live to show us. When the crab was brought out looked and said ain't NOWAY this crab is 2lbs. Maybe a little over 1lb. I asked to speak to the server or the manager in duty. I took the pic of coarse. Server said that the kitchen may have took the wrong crab . She would adjust the price afterward. When the bill arrived NO adjustment was made. When the bill arrived they never mention the adjustment, charged $97 for crab. We asked to speak to the manager, after more than 5mins and us paying the bill. The manager arrive, he was sorry that the bill wasn't adjusted. We accepted his apologies. I expressed my opinion of his establishment. I told him that it bad practice to do bait and switch of the crab. Overall its bad business to do this to customers first timer or regulars I'm for sure NEVER ever gonna dine at the establishment.
