Blue orchid has been a preferred restaurant of mine for a while. We've often ordered from them via SkipTheDishes, and have really enjoyed the food that we get. We usually go with the combination dinners which include wonton soup, spring rolls, chicken, fried rice, and two entrées. We went to eat in person this week, and the service was excellent. We went on a Thursday so the ambiance was quite quiet but it's a nice clean space with very friendly staff and the food is even better fresh from the kitchen. I'll definitely be coming back to try more of the authentic Chinese food. read more

I think this is the best Chinese food place around! It is located on Jasper Avenue with a parking lot behind and street parking. However, it can be a challenge to find a parking spot if people are attending church at the time you arrive. My family has been eating here for a few years and I even celebrated my 25th wedding anniversary here. Alex and the rest of the staff ensures all the customers are well taken care of. He had heart balloons and flowers for our table which made the occasion even more special. The food is fabulous, the peaches and shrimp dish is so good as well as the beef with Gai lan and the tofu assorted vegetable hot pot. Noodles and desserts are great as well! We have tried so many dishes here it is hard to name them all. This restaurant is also on SkipTheDishes and with my referral, my office has ordered on several occasions. This review is based on a one time delivery experience. It was the best food we've had in 2023. We ordered 3 dishes plus rice for 2 and it was dinner for two for 2 days. And just as good the second day. Mushuu pork, sweet and sour chicken, and shrimp chow mein, all delicious, sauced lightly and full flavourly. We take my mom here for lunch every second week. The staff are always friendly, cheerful, and very helpful with my mom, as she is in a wheelchair. To say that I am disappointed is a bit of an understatement. Blue Orchid does have a few decent dishes here and there but the majority is a letdown. Did I expect my mom's home cooking? No, but I was hoping for something a little more than the salty mess that awaited me. * Sweet and sour pork Exactly what you would expect from the typical sweet and sour pork. It was good, not too many vegetables and the sauce wasn't too sweet. *black pepper beef on hot plate Absolutely delicious. The tenderloin was perfectly cooked and the black pepper sauce had just the right amount of kick to it. Again, lots of meat and not too many vegetables. You get what you paid for. I would even say this is the best dish at Blue Orchid. *Twice cooked pork This was when things started to go downhill. The pork was incredibly salty and seemed to be cooked in the same sauce as the kung pao shrimp. It was saturated in saltiness but the flavour was pretty on point. If you can get past the salt, it's actually not too bad of a dish! *Kung pao shrimp Stay away! We counted the number of shrimps in the dish and we had only 12. It was mostly green peppers and onions. It was too salty and the kung pao spicy flavour simply wasn't there. The service was mediocre. We did have to get the waiters attention a few times for water refills but the staff were courteous. Nothing too special but was decent. There is free parking in the back and free wifi which is a bonus, especially since the restaurant is located on Jasper Ave. Overall, I would not come here again, it was overpriced for what you got (mostly vegetables, not enough meat) and the flavours just weren't on par. Ordered from Skipthedishes. Arrived pretty fast for a Saturday dinner. Ordered a dinner for 1 combo and pork dumplings. Dinner for 1 included chicken fried rice, spring roll, wanton soup and 2 choices of main dishes. Was surprised with the servings - really huge. Chicken on the fried rice seemed to be undercook but the fried rice was seasoned well, not too salty. Shanghai noodles tasted good too as well as the beef broccoli and spring roll. Soup was pretty good but wanton was a miss. It was bland. The dumplings are good however the fillings are not enough for the dough wrapper. It appears that all of the items are good for at least 2 people. If you want to try as much items as you can without spending a lot, try the dinner combo. It was a nice add too that they included fortune cookies and soya sauce. And that they properly packed the food so no spills or mess when you get it. read more

This is our second time ordering from them the delivery people are always amazing and so friendly. Alex the one person who works there was so helpful and friendly when helping get our order organized. The food is amazing I love how the liquid of the wonton soup is separate from the wontons and veggies and meat. Also the chicken Chop suey has so much chicken in it. The dry ribs were one of the best I have had and the chicken balls and spring rolls were nice and crispy like they just came out of the oven. Found this place during a vacation and thoroughly enjoyed it! Very authentic Cantonese food and parking is free behind the building after 6:00pm. Staff is extremely friendly and attentive, making the whole experience here even better. The restaurant is also near to many apartments and does delivery, making it very convenient! Each dish portion is also BIG making it really worth it. We ordered too much to list but all were equally delicious. Would definitely come back if I could! read more

I went to this place with my partner. The service was good at first, but the food was over priced and not exactly great, bourbon St. Is was way better by comparison. When we were ready to pay and leave the waiter asked how much money we wanted back and we obviously wanted the change back. He basically tipped himself and he had an attitude even after charging us for "dining in", who charges for dining in. He just wanted to charge us more, which makes sense because there was only us in there. Almost ruined our good evening. At least eating at Bourbon St. you trust the food will be good and there's no dumb hidden fees. I don't recommend this place. read more

This place is now in my top 5 ..!! We ordered delivery. I was impressed with the tight packaging and i knew i was on to something special when he handed it to me with an inner sense of pride, like he knew i was going to love it. I have been fortunate enough to have traveled to Hong Kong. So forgive me for not experimenting THIS time. We loved the beef chow mein / special fried rice and the pineapple CHICKEN BALLS that sassy sauce was served on the side and gave me the inner joy of being a kid again. Two visits in two days and was impressed by both my lunch and dinner. On a Saturday before 11:30AM, we were the first ones in the restaurant. The tables around the perimeter are for groups of 2 and 4 and there are larger tables in the middle. There are little details the make this a comfortable and lovely restaurant to visit. The place setting is lovely with the gold detailing but it would be difficult to keep them clean! The menus have laminated sheets and corner tabs to hold them in. The menus seemed cleaned and were presented nicely with the items written in Chinese, English, and the price clear. They also have the network and wifi code written at each table which is great. There are a few TVs in the bar area for those seated close by. The service is very attentive. For our lunch visit, the Manager, Alex, was friendly to chat with us and providing us with milk tea and hot and sour soup to try on the house. We ordered the beef brisket and vegetables with flat rice noodles, and the assorted meat and vegetable chow mein. Both arrive at the table hot and fresh and we didn't have to wait long for the food at all. The bowls seemed larger than the typical rice bowls so nice to fit more delicious noodles. Both dishes weren't oily even with the crispy chow mein noodles. There was a good variety of meats and vegetables. For the 3 of us, we weren't able to finish the noodles even though I would have loved to eat more! The bill came to $30+GST so quite reasonable for the amount of food. The next evening we had a family dinner and was seated by the bar. We ordered one of their set dinner for 10 with about 10 dishes. Some of the dishes were what we usually order but some were different and I liked their spin on some of our favourites. Many of the dishes were large and we all ended up taking a take out box home to enjoy the next day. The fried rice was a huge plate full and the peaches with mayo was battered and fried shrimp. They also offered 2 desserts; tapioca dessert and then also brought out a platter of mango, coconut, and a clear jelly. They also gave us ballots for a draw to win prizes so hopefully one of us is lucky enough to win. The service was attentive and there was not much wait in between each dish. Our dinner was over $300 but a great meal was enjoyed. The dinner rush was a little busier than the lunch time crowd and it seemed busy with a few delivery drivers coming in to pick up food. There's free parking in the lot south of the restaurant but it's shared with other businesses and the nearby church so it can be a challenge to find a parking spot. To be honest, I've always walked past this place and just dismissed it as another westernized Canadian Chinese food restaurant until someone took me there the other day. Surprisingly, the blue orchid caters both westernized and traditional Chinese food. We ordered several dishes off of the traditional menu, all of which were good. The restaurant, itself, was also quite clean and service was quick and enjoyable. I would definitely go back to Blue Orchid for a family dinner or order take out from here on a lazy night. Additional bonus is that it's located on Jasper and a little bit more centralized . Update: Been back quite regularly and the more I go, the more impressed I am with Blue Orchid. Went there on a Monday evening with a group of 5. The restaurant was a clean with an alright table arrangement- I really liked their chopsticks. They had little FOH staff, but our server was actually great at his job- he made great recommendations. One thing I was not pleased with was the poor drink selection and the fact that not only was there no free refills but the drinks were canned. We were also informed that "the bartender was off today" so they could not offer any cocktails on the drink menu. The dinner menu(s) however, had lots to choose from, and you would ask for specific proteins in certain sauces. I'd like to say they had all the classic chinese dishes you'd expect at a chinese restaurant. We ordered 10 items and shared them all; asian style pork dumping - loved green onion cake - loved vietnamese meat spring roll - didn't love these lemon chicken - very disappointed, was expecting a breaded chicken tossed in sauce. but the reality was similar to beer-battered fish, and lemon sauce (that wasn't all that sweet) on the side. 5. szechuan fried spicy chicken - pretty good, but extremely salty, however the server informed us that it's a dish from the northern part of China which is very cold and that is how the people there prepare their food. I'll take his word on it lol. 6. broccoli beef - decent 7. black bean beef - decent 8. salt & pepper pork - pretty good 9. shanghai noodle - great 10. house special fried rice - nothing out of this world. It was annoying that a lot of our dishes came one after another, as we wanted to eat the meat dishes with the rice and noddles. After clearing our plates they served us a nice infused water, and a plate of fresh fruit. It was my little sister's birthday, and we told them upon arrival so they brought out a beautiful plater of some sort of jello pudding that tasted like mango-coconut custard. For years, we have been searching for truly great, authentic Cantonese food here in Edmonton. Most places we have visited have been okay, and a few have been good, but none have been truly outstanding. I had just about given up my quest when Blue Orchid (formerly a Thai/Asian-fusion restaurant) reopened as a Chinese restaurant. I am so glad to find such good Chinese here in our fair city, and even more excited that it is in Oliver (just steps from my work and a few blocks from my home!). I have been to Blue Orchid for both lunch and dinner. For lunch, they offer lunch specials for $10. You can also order off the regular menus (they have both Western and traditional Chinese). Food is served quickly, so you can get back to work on time. And the quality is always very good. Often when I've come for dinner, the place has been very busy, so reservations might come in handy, especially if you are coming later that our dinner time of 5:30. The restaurant can accommodate large groups, and usually the big, round tables are filled with groups enjoying each other and the delicious food. Speaking of groups, we came here with my extended family and some friends on Christmas Eve. The staff was outstanding and we enjoyed all of the dishes we ordered. They also have a set group meals, but they recommend pre-ordering these so they have the fresh seafood on hand. Some of my favourite dishes here include the Szechuan eggplant (offered on both the western and traditional Chinese menus - both are yummy, but the traditional is some of the best ever), Mapo tofu, Szechuan green beans, Yu Choi in garlic sauce, and sliced fish in chili oil. And my 4-year-old really likes the ginger beef and fried rice. But nearly everything I have tried has been exceptional. I have been many times already, and I know I will continue to come again and again and again. read more

Short review; I'm down with this place. Not every dish is a winner, and I certainly prefer the Chinese menu to the Americanized menu, but they are damn friendly and always remember me, which is nice. Our food tonight was great! I really enjoy the fried rice and the sauces on the Sweet and Sour Pork and Ginger Beef. Both times we have ordered there has been lots of fresh crunchy vegetables which is always. Tonight we tried the Beef and Broccoli which was also very yummy. Also had the wonton soup, no complaints. We got to this restaurant at about 7 pm on a Friday night and it was quite busy inside. This was the first time I have been to this restaurant and to my surprise it was quite big and bright inside. We ordered their 6 person meal and a plate of their deep fried shrimp balls. The shrimp balls were huge and tasted very good. There was plenty of food for the 7 of us. I even had leftovers to take away. Their Chinese beef stew with radish was excellent and am looking forward to a return trip so I can eat this dish again. The service was quite good considering this is a Chinese restaurant and it was quiet busy inside. If you are looking for some good authentic Chinese cuisine, give this place a try, you won't be disappointed. I got the Sezchuan egg plant (all egg plant,nothing else), rice flat noodle (I got it with sea food of which there was plenty but would probably do beef in the future as it would go very well with the sauce), and green peas with mushroom (other veggies came in this too,it was the least impressive of the dishes). Well, my family and I spent over $400 at our table... but were told that we weren't eligible, which isn't what is being advertised here. This restaurant is not honest, my family and I will not be going back there again. For a happy milestone such as an 8th year anniversary, they're certainly not making the patrons happy. My family came for dinner to celebrate my moms birthday. We ordered the dinner for 4 people where you get to choose from a selection of dishes. We selected the braised beef/eggplant dish, tofu/fish skillet, Chinese style fried chicken and deep fried spicy garlic shrimp. The meal begins with a basic broth soup that was flavorful but...simple. The other dishes were a good size but flavor was rather mild. I've had these dishes at other restaurants and these ones did not match up in flavor. I just had lunch at this beautiful new Chinese restaurant. The restaurant is modern and beautiful. Free parking in the rear. I ordered a combo lunch for $15.00. We decided to order take out from here after checking the reviews and to thank my in laws for taking care of us for the week. We ordered Wor Wonton soup, special chop suey, ginger beef , special chow mein and sweet and sour pork. Soup is good, simple yet tasty broth, as well as the sweet and sour pork since it tastes fresh and newly cooked, As well as the chop suey with the cruncy veggies . But with the chow mein, the noodles are too dry and looks like a day old that was just reheated. Same with the ginger beef, the other half looked like it was reheated and served the next day, with the hard and chewy texture , and mixed with newly cooked ones, coz some are fine and soft . thus, the 2 stars.. I just hoped they won't do that, esp since it's too obvious.. hungry or not, I was disappointed because this is my first and most likely the last that I'm ordering here.. read more

As far as Chinese food goes, this place is better than some I've been to! The ginger beef is exactly what it should be: crispy and flavorful with lots of sauce. Also, the sweet and sour pork is on point! I ordered a "dinner for one" and the portion was gigantic. I ate as much as I could, and took the leftovers home. That fed me for another whole meal! Plus, you can't argue with the prices. A ton of food for less than $20 (this is with an extra side dish too!) So good. So filling, but so good! read more
