Oh my goodness, this is like the Edmonton Chinese food hidden gem! You absolutely must try it. While the restaurant itself is a classic Chinese eatery with a grassy floor and everywhere, the food is simply unforgettable. If you're unfamiliar with authentic Southern Chinese cuisine from Guangdong, Shenzhen or Hong Kong, this is the place to experience it. For just $24, they serve you a feast with incredibly generous portions. Two of us couldn't even finish our order of about 5-6 dishes. We only spent $85 including tips. The service was like "real western Chinese restaurant service" - no service, which is neither good nor bad. Just thought I'd mention it. Haha read more

Double Greeting was a few blocks from my hotel. Sadly the area it is located in is very rundown and off-putting. The good news is there is parking right outside the entrance. I ordered beef chow mein (deep fried noodles vs traditional pan-fried noodles) and salt & pepper pork chops. Cash only so be prepared. I enjoyed both entrees and had leftovers for breakfast. Note no rice given with pork chops and I had to ask for plasticware. read more

Okay, the location is bad, the ambience isn't great but if you know, you know. This is some of the best authentic Asian cuisine I've had in a while. Great prices, fresh ingredients and fast!! Bring cash, no cards accepted. read more

Really great place. No frills. Food is fresh. Not much to look at on the inside. Cash only They have a parking lot(ish) but with all the construction it is near impossible to get in. I think since COVID they are take out only. Service is fast. Today we tried the fried fish, the ginger beef, the vegatables in garlic sauce, Shanghai Noodles and Chicken Fried Rice. Everything was delcious. The fried fish was full of flavour, perfectly cooked so soft inside. Family loved the ginger beef. I liked how the sauce came seperate so it wasn't soggy in the styrofoam containder. Veggies were perfectly cooked and flavourful. The kids slurped up the Shanghai noodles and the rice was nicely seasoned and flavourful. I will have to try something more adventurous next time. Any suggestions? Feel free to message me. read more

Double Greeting has been such a staple in Chinatown for so many of us. They were a go-to for late night eats, they're budget friendly and food has always been consistent. It's the nostalgic Hong Kong/ Cantonese cafe vibes with the classic dishes that come out quick and hot. We recently revisited Double Greeting for dinner after the Animethon and were starving for some carbs. Now if you're a native to Edmonton, every family is always going to have 1 staple here that you'll always get. For us it's the brisket with rice or with the fried noodles. The brisket and the sauce is SO good. Tender meaty bites of beef with the savory beef gravy to spoon over your selected carbs. We opted for their Deep Fried Pork with special salt, Stir Fried Seafood over Crispy Noodles and Salted Fish Fried Rice. Each plate runs for about $15+ and between the 4 of us, we each had a small box of take out for a second dinner! If you haven't already and you're in need of a fix of some super yummy hong kong dishes, make your way over to Double Greeting. read more

My husband and I have been coming to this restaurant for a really long time and it is simply good food and good value. Not the greatest area of town, although they have been gentrifying the area so it is much more pleasant than it used to be. Singapore fried rice noodles are our favorite. When we are hungry and arent looking for any ambiance, we come here. read more

Love their food . Every time I go there. Wor wonton is fantastic.. ginger beef excellent

No frills chinese food. Cheap. Fast. Best wontons in the city. Authentic. Sketchy area but large restaurant. Lots of free downtown parking. First off parking sucks downtown. Theres always a place you have to pay. But in chinatown there is ample free parking if you know where to look. This is one of those spots. Lots of free parking in the front. Once inside the restaurant is old run down like any typical chinese restaurant that has not been renovated since it was built. Green booths. Mismatched chairs. Fixtures from the 70's. The ambiance is eat in only with no frills. Once inside you are quickly greeted by staff and seated promptly. This they do very well. Impressed. I happened to visit during the lunch hour on a weekday. And the place was packed almost full with lunch patrons. Mostly chinese folk. Which is a great sign of authenticity. They do however have a good mix of nationalities here you read more

For a place that features wonton in their name, they should be doing better. Maybe it's my Big Toronto city standards. Growing up, my mother loves HK wonton noodles so I've had my share. It took me awhile to finally honker down and try out this place! But boy was it a disappointment! I should have ordered the Beef tendon noodles (which was not on the menu but the lady claims they have) Since this place is called "wonton house" and I've been wanting to try their wontons for awhile everytime I'm in town, I decided to give it a shot. The noodles itself was fine, but the wonton seems def homemade but that's all I could the good things I could say about this place! The actual wonton itself lacked the shrimp my flavour, maybe it was a bad batch or maybe it was just not made for Chinese palette! It had more pork than shrimp, one tiny piece of shrimp when proper Chinese wontons should be the opposite. I would go back just to try other things but it's really disappointing when they are "wonton house" and they can't even get their wontons right. I'll be sticking with Pho Next time I come back to Edmonton. Service wise like all Chinese restaurant, but what surprised me was the condiments had to be on request maybe due to covid restrictions and all that. But Alberta was one of the firsts to lift everything so guess the restaurants don't wanna put out all the condiments so chilli oil and vinegar that's a staple with wonton noodles had to be requested! Upon getting the bill at the cashier counter (the noodles came up to $10) they didn't have change for a $20, and the lady made a big fuss about whether I had something smaller. She finally went into her own purse to get me change as she made some sort of excuse of the owner being away on her dinner break. Anyways again maybe it's my big city girl high standards but yeah this place was meh in my books. read more

We went to Double Greeting because we read that they have the most incredible Ginger Beef. IT was disappointing. This ancient place has been here forever and still serving the same food! It is located in a not so good area with limited parking currently as the street is closed but there is street parking and a few nearby lots. We like coming here as the prices are excellent as well as the quantity along with taste. They serve noodle soups, stir fried noodles, rice dishes, entrees such as sweet and sour pork, tofu choices and vegetables such as gai lan and snacks such as dumplings or something light. This place is popular and we always bump into someone we know. There are booths and a few tables and you can seat yourself. There is nothing fancy here, the water comes in plastic cups and you get Chinese tea. They give you a menu with an order form and pen so you write down your own order. The waitress will be around to collect your form or you can bring it up to the front. Considering how busy it usually is, the food comes out fast. Once you are done, you can ask for the bill or just walk up to the counter to pay like most customers. This restaurant also stays open late so if you are looking for a late night snack or dinner, they are there for you. No matter what time of day, the food and service is always great! read more

There's nothing bad I can say about this place as I've been going here for 30 years. Over that time it has turned itself from a super dive to a moderate dive. It used to be very dirty and run down and now it's just a bit acceptable. Regardless the food hasn't changed, still just as good as it was back then. Loads of msg and everything good. Don't go if you're super health conscious. Go if you really like authentic yummy food. Btw this place is CASH only. I recommend the beef brisket with wontons in noodles soup. Also the hoinan chicken rice. Best of all is the salt and pepper wings. If you have time order the ribs in rice hot pot. read more

It has been a number of years since I have been to Double Greeting Wonton House after moving to Texas and it still tasted as good as it did he first time we went 25+ years ago. Not only was the taste the same but so was our server! We have loved coming here for years with friends and family, it was such a treat to the same great service and food. The ginger beef never disappoints and no where else compares. Our other favorites are the garlic and black bean chicken chow mein, house fried rice, beef and broccoli and beef brisket won ton noodle soup. It was a killer meal and we finished everything in sight. Fingers crossed the next time I make my way back to Edmonton Double Greeting Wonton House is still standing. I am so happy this place is still open, I thought it had closed. I went here for the first time about 30 years ago and fell in love with #73 Shanghai noodles with pork. Tonight I went back for the first time in 20 years and the item was still on the menu ( with the same number) and was just as good as I remembered. We also had Bar-b-q pork and soya chicken. The pork was excellent. The chicken was moist and cooked perfectly. Portions were generous. We ended up bringing lots home. Staff was friendly and helpful. The only downside was they only take cash and we did not have any, there is a cash machine on the premises. read more

Great authentic Chinese noodle dishes at reasonable prices! Throughout the years the interior has been upgraded. You know you are at the right place when the place is full of Chinese families, police and civil servants from Canada Place. A very enjoyable lunch experience. I don't care what people think, this is a five-star place to me, simply because it's stood the test of time. For twenty years, my family has been going to DG or "Deej" as we call it on a regular basis. Though, some have defected to the supposedly similar/better/cleaner/whatever "All Happy" near 101 St, my loyalty is still with Double Greets. This is the place to go if you don't give a crap about ambiance (c'mon, the pastel isn't that bad), location (so what if it's by a now-demolished shady hotel?), and, um, service (brusque is possibly too polite)... but if you care about greasy, authentic, tasty Chinese food. Now, it suffers, like many Chinese restaurants, from "too many to choose" syndrome so I'ma break it down for you: start with the Wor Wonton (i mean it IS a "wonton house"), beef brisket chow mein (crisp noodles), #155 with the spicy tofu and pork on rice, and the spiced salt chicken wings. If you want to go inauthentic on me, their ginger beef is actually very good. Meaty with a crisp coating, unlike some offerings where it's all coating, no meat. The sauce is good. I also like their satay beef chow fan with gailan and shanghai noodle (also popularly called "you know, the one that looks like worms"). There are probably more, but those should be safe enough to test. Best of all, it's pretty cheap. :) read more

All I need to say is # 78. Beef Chow Fan. Y-U-M-M-Y. It's all I ever get for take-out here! I have been going here since my age was in the single digits. So give or take 18 years. I am not a crazy regular customer, but I will go here a handful of times within a year for the past several years at the very least. It's a greasy Chinese restaurant - what can I say? Don't expect more than you can chew! Pros: Food is yummy, prices are great, food comes out fast. Cons: Scary neighbourhood, Cash Only (although there is an ATM by the doors to get your cash!), bland old decor, some of the staff can't understand or speak English very well. I have rated it 5 stars ONLY for pickup, as that's all I do (the food is good, and they are quick), but sitting down - is where you should look at the cons I listed. There is a variety of Chinese/Asian dishes you can choose from, but to be honest I don't think I've ordered anything other than #78 Beef Chow Fan and Ginger Beef for most of my adult life (they're one of my faves and only specifically from this restaurant), so I have yet to come back like old times, sit down and try something else. Or to call and arrange a pick-up like I always do lol. Beef Chow Fan is my all-time favorite Chinese dish. And it's all thanks to Double Greeting. I even try to find this exact dish if I happen to end up in a different Chinese restaurant! But nothing has come close DGWH. I discovered this as a kid (as it was my parents' favourite dish as well), and haven't stopped loving it. It's super greasy, but the noodles are flat, thick and chewy all flavoured by the sauce that everything including meat is drenched in. The beef goes so well with the noodles. This dish is not even too salty. Oily yes, salty a little. Ginger beef is awesome. They come in great big moist strips. Not hardened, shrunken or overcooked like some places. My bf complains it's too "fatty" tasting however I prefer it like this. It's moist , not overly chewy, and "fatty" tasting but very filling. I love it. Just like others have reviewed, service is mediocre as best. However, it IS Chinese food: Quick, fast, greasy, guilty pleasure. You don't like the grease, don't come here. But once in awhile, it hits the spot. Give it a go, bring a friend. Don't forget - Cash only! read more

This is a gem. An old school Chinese restaurant with a massive menu of fresh, fast, beautifully prepared meals with no pretensions at a very reasonable price. Along with a nice list of mains (plenty of tofu and mushroom dishes), they have lots of noodles and soup, lo-mein, congee, veggie entrees and dishes on rice (for those who don't want to share.) I just had basics tonight -- wonton noodles and soup, steamed bbq pork buns and rice roll with long donut (I know, a bit low on vegetables.) The soup was crystal clear and flavourful, the noodles were perfectly done and the wontons -- oh man those wontons -- delicate and savoury -- just what you should expect from a wonton house. The pork buns were light and tasty and the donut crisp and chewy. Don't be fooled by the fact that as of this writing, the outside could use a lick of paint. Despite the slushy weather, the place is nice and clean with cozy booths and friendly staff. I might just go back tomorrow for some congee! read more

I've been coming to this restaurant since I was a kid and recently had a business lunch here and found the food to be the same, delicious! The décor isn't one to write home about, primarily greenish booths that can be a little tight for those with a belly. But I must say it looks better now than it did 25 years ago. The menu has lots of items; soup, noodles, rice, and entrees and most under $10. They give you a pen and paper to write down your order and we ordered 2 items using the menu number. The black bean rice noodles came with lots of sauce and vegetables. My colleague ordered the seafood with vegetables which had shrimp, fried squid, and squid. Both of the dishes were good, but I liked the noodles better. The prices are cheap, and our meal came to $20 with leftovers too! Come for the good food and don't expect much for service or atmosphere. Or you could also order take out if you don't want to eat it. They only take cash though but there's at ATM in the restaurant. read more

A number of my friends think Double Greeting Won Ton House is the best Chinese "greasy spoon" restaurant in the city. And greasy it is - from its no frills exterior to somewhat grungy looking interior, the place spells "cheap." So, it is no surprise that the menu is filled with lots of different rice and noodle options for under $10. I decided to begin with a green onion cake, because, well, I love green onion cakes. It was soft, flavourful, and satisfying. I opted for one of the menu's front page specials: tofu and mushrooms on steamed rice. This came with a glass of soy milk. I found this an interesting beverage choice, but fine since I like soy milk. Tea was also provided with my meal. I probably should not have also ordered a cold Hong Kong style coffee (like Vietnamese coffee, but it comes already stirred), but I had not yet had any coffee that day so I felt justified in my abundance of drinks. When my meal came, I stared in disbelief. The huge plate of rice, mushrooms, tofu, and vegetables could easily have filled two people. It tasted great and I loved the sauce, which penetrated into the rice. All of these foods and drinks came to a bill of around $15. Wow. That is indeed a good deal. Now, while I mentioned at the beginning that some of my friends rave about this place (and I can see why), others have warned me about it. In particular, they said that the restaurant would not meet my need for a high level of cleanliness. Personally, I didn't see anything that grossed me out in particular (admittedly, I did not visit the washrooms). However, without going into graphic detail, a little while after I ate I was not very happy. In fairness, it could have been something else I had eaten that day. It could have been the strong coffee. It could have been that I ate a little too much. Or, I could have just been having a bad day. Still, if I return to Double Greeting Won Ton House, I will do so cautiously, and possibly with others - this food is meant for sharing. read more

Nestled behind a corner off of 97 Street, I am shocked that I've never been to Double Greeting Wonton House at least once previously in my lifetime. They are slightly off the beaten path so it's understandable if you've never spotted DG before. We decided to check them out for lunch on a Saturday afternoon and the place was packed. Choose a table or booth and pick wisely from the extensive list of dishes. The interior is old, grungy and looks like it hasn't been renovated for as long as the Land Before Time (those films were legit back in my childhood). That might deter some people but me, the ghetto'er, the betta. Prices are super cheap ($5.75-12.25) and they have everything: noodle soup, noodles, hot pot, rice dishes, etc. There are only 357 items to choose from. Easy peasy right? "Today's Specials" on the very front page of the menu made me chuckle. The hours are legit. Open till midnight and 1:00am Friday and Saturday's! Lord, Edmonton needs more places like this. We were a group of 5 so I was put in charge of ordering - I decided to keep it pretty basic and technically, pretty non-Asian as we had a few people that couldn't eat pork/meat and whatnot. - Spring rolls ($5.95) - six pieces of deep fried vegetable spring rolls. They came out piping hot, fresh and not too greasy. Pretty standard fare but I will give them a thumbs up if that means anything to ya. - Shrimp fried rice (#161) ($9.75) - fried rice is another one of those typical dishes that people associate with Chinese food. Easy to make but difficult to master and get that elusive "wok hay". This one was tasty but could have used more shrimp in it. - Ginger beef (#201) ($10.75) - I don't think I've ever ordered ginger beef at a restaurant before but the group wanted it so I obliged. It's definitely not authentic but you already know that. The ginger beef was hot, tasty and satisfying. Crunchy, sweet goodness. - Seafood hot pot - hot pot is always a winner. This seafood hot pot came out in an oldddddddddd school pot but it was so freaking good. Lots of fish, squid and shrimp along with tofu, cabbage and some other veggies. We actually wanted to order one of their specialty hot pot but the wait was about 20-25 minutes and we were crunched for time. Oh well, this one more than hit the spot. - Chow fun with chicken and kai lan - chow fun is one of my favourite noodles. Kai lan (gai lan) is one of my favourite Chinese vegetable (Chinese broccoli if you haven't had it before). Combine the two should equal greatness right? Well, mostly. This one was decent but it was lacking - the sauce was pretty generic tasting and wasn't fully integrated with the noodles. Decent, but I've had much better elsewhere. Don't forget, CASH only! They have an ATM machine inside but that's going to cost you unnecessary dolla bills so plan ahead of time, ok sonny? Put this one on your list for late night Chinese eats - again, they're open till midnight/1 am! I will have to come back to try more of their authentic dishes, which one friend has told me about, such as their eggplant hotpot, wonton noodle soup, etc. Essentially, all of their old school Honger food. Next time! read more

First visit to the Double Wonton House so I'll mention right off the things that one would notice immediately. The lady who served us as soon as we walked in and helped us with our selections. Wow...was she ever nice. The place was comfortable. It had ambiance. Clean. Washrooms were spotless. The happy loud jabbering resonating from kitchen made us smile. (thanks....so nice to hear.) Cash only, so be prepared. We wanted Kung Pao Chicken and it's supposed to be spicy so the nice lady said to order #222 which was the "Diced Chicken And Cashews With Szechuan Sauce". So we did. It wasn't spicy and no big deal. We also ordered the "Egg Fried Rice". It was simple but great. The order came and here's why it stands out....the "Diced Chicken And Cashews With Szechuan Sauce" didn't come with rice or noodles...the order was solely focused on the main ingredients sans filler. Coming from Toronto, I am spoiled with the variety of Chinese food. This place is quite decent. Very Hong Kong style. The noodle bowls are always consistent and tasty. Rice dishes are good portion. Beef brisket and organs are always good with congee and Lo mein. That's what I would recommend. Restaurant is not in the greatest condition in terms of looks, but what do you expect from a late night joint in Chinatown. You can hear the woks and chefs hard at work, fire blazing. The only thing I would say that might make people feel slightly uncomfortable at times is when the chefs at the back start chatting away. Sounds like they arguing over who owes who money in mahjong. For drinks, always recommend the classic lemon iced tea. For light meals, all congee dishes. Will make you feel at home. All waitresses are super polite and kind, never an issue with service. One of my fondest memories of living in Edmonton in the 80's. I used to try to save money by booking off work and cooking at home, it would take me at least an hour and 15 minutes to do that. Then I found out that I could go to Double Greeting, order an amazing dish for $4.00 and be in and out of there in 20 minutes! Time is money in my profession so DG helped me to save money. And the food! So tasty, I always ordered Beef Brisket on rice, sometimes Shanghai noodles, Singapore Noodles, Amoy Noodles or Rice Rolls with onion or chicken, Steamed Chicken and Soya Chicken on Rice, I remember the first time I saw a server walking by with that plate I could not believe how good it looked coming from a small town on the northern coast, I had no idea how good food could be. Also the Gai Lan with oyster sauce was always perfectly cooked. And when I had the chili oil it cured the problem I had with cold fingers and toes in the Edmonton winters! I went there after it first opened and am so happy it is still just like I remember it. read more

Rarely would I say, "Hey, let's go out for Chinese food" for the reason that I would find them unauthentic or wrought with health code violations. However, I find myself more often visiting Chinese restaurants because it's a part of Asian culture. Despite knowing that the meat could have been left out or why the tea cups have crusties on them, it's about being with family and friends so I have realized that I need to get over it. And also avoid places that I get really bad bowel movements after. My girlfriend's family often eat at Double Greeting. We often take up an entire table or a few booths. Now past-Andrew would usually avoid this area due to the location and the uneasiness I get when parking my car here but over time, it's not really a big deal if a couple of unscrupulous looking patron walk on by. I don't look for trouble and they don't look for me. Upon sitting down, you'll notice the obvious stereotypes of Chinese restaurants that popped up from the 80's/90's: odd choices for décor. We've got white walls that have transformed to a custard yellow over the years, faux-brass chandeliers hanging above cafeteria style chairs and mauve fabric print booths. As a part of modernizing, you have a 40" LCD thrown in for good measure showing Chinese Variety shows or the news. But folks, lets all remind ouselves that if the restaurant poured all their money towards modernizing the look to keep up with...no one really is "modern" (Emperor's Palace or Cafe Tropika or even Urban China are probably your best "modern" looking places), that would probably mean their money isn't going towards the food which in the end defeats the whole purpose of you enjoying your meal. This is also under the assumption that these restauranters aren't letting it fly with the paper if you know what I mean. I've come to that realization and have simply focused on why I'm here. The food. I haven't experienced this type of aura at any other Asian restuarant yet. What I'm referring to is what I've recently learned translated to is "The Spirit of the Wok". Yes, food can be spiritual and deep and full of thought. What I want you to do is sit down, avoid the Choy and Beef or your typical Won Ton Soup. Get away from that. Those items are to please new customers who want to try familiarity. What I want you to do is sit down and order the thick rice noodles with beef (the noodles are pronouced Haw Fu-unh and the fried rice with shrimp, egg, and chinese sausage). What I'd like you to experience when eating is the tangible crackling of the food in your mouth. The infusion of the smoke and heat in the rice/noodle and I want you to envision the lifespan of this noodle/rice as it came to be in the wok. That is what Chinese people refer to as "Wok Hey" - "The Spirit of the Wok". I've grown to appreciate this art and have been convinced that sometimes, you gotta get your hands dirty to see some beauty. By the way - it's cash only. PS. Sorry, I'm not Chinese so I'm romanizing the phrases and dish names. I also can't read or label the other dishes I've experienced so this review is only limited to my favorite things here. read more

I read all the good reviews so went to try for myself. This place was terrible. The ginger beef is not crispy but soggy with chewing gum like meat. No ginger in sauce only the slightest bit of ginger in the mix veg which was soggy peppers a tiny bit and then a whole bunch of super soggy onions. Not crisp fresh onions, but soggy stew onions. So gross. Spring rolls were like the ones you get at Costco. I am sorry but nothing about this was fresh or good let alone delicious like so many said. The place is a dump, I dont mind that. Some really good Chinese places are. Prices were not cheap either. Normal prices I paid at much better places. Very much a let down. I am sad to say nothing redeeming about the experience. read more

Sketchy 100% but the Chinese food here cannot be beat even in larger cities such as Vancouver and Toronto with 10x Chinese populous. Very little MSG if any, and you don't feel like garbage after eating here - just full. I've been coming here for over 10 years, prices have gone up slightly with inflation but excellent 'bang for your buck' to this day. They do everything right as an authentic Chinese restaurant - smoky wok flavours, crispy vegetables, tenderized meats, thick and not overly salty sauces. #201 Ginger beef, and the beef brisket lo mein are always excellent choices as are the chicken wings, calamari, and wonton soup. Anything really. Portions are massive. 3 Items on average will come to $40 and between two people you will take enough home for two days of leftovers. Just sad they don't have peaches and shrimp.
