For the price, you get large portions and delicious authentic Chinese food with no frills. No added tack on prices for a instagram worthy wall. Just delicious Chinese food. I really love the peaches and cream shrimps and their authentic hot pots. But everything I had here is exceptionally delicious. There's a hotpot mushroom dish here that's delicious. I decided on a whim to come here for lunch and I was blown away by the lunch menu. It's basically their regular menu for $12-15!!!! It's such a fabulous deal, I'm gonna have to be a regular now. I ordered my go to beef and greens chowmein which was crispy authentic and fresh. I was happy to see there was a large portion of meat and greens which is much more generous than other places I've eaten at!!! There is lots of choose from but they are missing some of our favorites like shrimp with rice crepe or Chinese donuts in rice crepe (Jar Leung). We ordered har gow, siu mai, gai lan, beef balls, beef tripe, spare ribs on rice, fried shrimp dumplings, chicken feet. We found the portions slightly smaller than other places we've been to. But it was tasty. You can also order regular Chinese fare but we were just here for dim sum. You order off a dim sum sheet. Staff was very friendly. It wasn't very busy and we were the only customers for half of our meal. Restrooms were spacious and clean albeit single occupancy. When the bill came they gave us some chocolates and wished us Happy New Year. We probably will come back again.

Then later on in the meal I saw someone use the staff bathroomn instead of the ladies, which was lost in translation for me. Menu had a tonne of things in it and not all that I understood. I like this though, it is interesting to try something new. I decided on the beef brisket with veggies on rice and my husband tried a typical fried combo Chinese plate. We started with the soup dumplings on the dim sum menu. Things were generally a hit. The soup dumplings had a lot of meat and my hubby agreed with this, but I felt they lacked the soup and the flavour...but were still good. The wrappers were lovely. My beef brisket was fresh but the beef was fatty and I would say 3 mini half bok choys is not what I was expecting for veggies. My husband's combo which was chow mein, beef and veggies, chicken balls, and sweet and sour pork was the real winner. This is something I would normally not order but I wish I had in this case. So flavourful and plentiful and my husband had to take some home even after I pilfered his broccoli and onions, which barely happens. The sweet and sour pork was toothsome and tender. The chowmein was cooked well. I will come back here even if it is not the Pacolac and I will try one of the more western Chinese dishes.

Sam Wok is located in and older motel/motor court located on Calgary Trail S at 67 ave, and is as unassuming a restaurant as you could ask for. I love places like this for their lack of pretension and for their potential to be a hidden gem. I like family run restaurants and cafes that exude character that has not been purchased from a restaurant supply warehouse. The restaurant itself is far from fancy, and any semblance of "decor" seems rather haphazard. It is small, but cozy, rough around the edges, but clean. There are booths along one wall, and several tables with comfortable chairs around the main area. The booths are comfortable and roomy, which is increasingly rare in a world where so many cafes seem to take their seating strategy from budget airlines. The menu is vast and the choices appealing, but we went with the Wor Won Ton soup and the House Special Chow Mein, to share. Tea had landed within moments of sitting down, and our food arrived in very good time. We had considered ordering a third dish, but ended up glad we did not, as both of these portions were large, and by the time we were done, had left us comfortably full and happy. The soup was loaded with goodness, the Won Tons large and home made. There were also plump, juicy shrimp and delicious BBQ pork along with everything else you would expect. All the ingredients were fresh and delicious. The Chow Mein was also excellent, incorporating many of the same ingredients, on a bed of perfectly cooked noodles and ample delicious sauce. We were there for the long haul, as we wanted to catch up and chat, and we went through 3 pots of tea in the 2 hours we spent. We never felt rushed, and we were not the only table doing this. We were, however the only table of diners not of Asian extraction. This is always a good sign to me. If you want great Chinese food (or any other) go where folks of that culture go. When we finally settled up, our total bill was $27, less tip. Great food, Great value, nice people cooking and serving. These folks are proud of their food, and with good reason. If you are a fan of great Chinese food, and not afraid of a low rent location, you need to eat here. I will definitely be back.
