There are legendary restaurants in Edmonton and then there's The Lingnan. Open since 1947 (that's 78 years!!!) you would be hard pressed to find an Edmontonian that doesn't have some sort of relationship with this famed Chinese restaurant, its food, or the family who runs it. Speaking of the Quons, they have become celebrities in their own right especially after their family was featured in a season of the TV series The Family Restaurant in 2009 followed by The Quon Dynasty in 2011. The matriarch of the family, Amy Quon, is well known for her warm and friendly demeanor and the way that she takes time to visit with guests. The Lingnan was the first Chinese restaurant in Edmonton and most people would likely tell you that it remains the best. VUE Weekly named The Lingnan the #1 Best Chinese 2018. The Edmonton Journal has voted them Best/Favourite Chinese Restaurant 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. And EDify Magazine awarded them the Best Chinese Restaurant 2023 title. The list of accolades is long and with good reason. I have personally eaten at The Lingnan many times over the years and I have always appreciated their quality and consistency. I decided to pay them a visit on a recent Sunday evening to revisit this Chinese institution. Located in Central McDougall right behind Rogers Place, the restaurant's tall vertical signage and red and yellow paint cannot be mistaken. They've also got a really cool mural painted on the side of the building. The interior is impressive, expansive, and ornate. Entering the restaurant you'll first be greeted by a life-size bronze statue of a Chinese warrior. Next you'll marvel at their large (and very clean!) aquarium stocked with giant goldfish. The space will take your breath away and there is certainly no where else like it in the city. Every inch is beautifully decorated and the colours of red and gold create the palette. Intricate Chinese lanterns hang from the ceiling. The tiling, the art, and the gilded accents stretch as far as the eye can see. There are at least three different dining rooms and many of these areas can be sectioned off to create even more spaces. Each table is covered with a white table cloth and servers in traditional Chinese clothing hurry about the room. A reservation is highly recommended because even on a Sunday night every single table was occupied and there was a lineup of people waiting to be seated. The Lingnan's patrons are loyal, many of them having spent their entire lives eating meals at the restaurant. A feast for the eyes, simply dining at The Lingnan is an experience in itself. Once seated and settled it was difficult to ignore the flurry of activity all around. Happy customers enjoying their meals, the aroma of delicious plates of food passing by, and the gorgeous jade-coloured ceiling with a dragon in the center of it. Looking for a beverage to match the atmosphere, a warm cup of Chinese Jasmine Tea would've been a wonderful choice. However, I ventured to the cocktail menu for something a bit more special. The China Moon (Soho Lychee, Hipnotiq, Blue Curacao, pineapple - $10.00) caught my attention. A beautiful green-hued beverage to match the ceiling overhead! I appreciated the list of custom cocktails, created to suit the restaurant. Seemingly a modern addition, these drinks elevate the dining experience by complimenting the food and overall ambiance. I loved this sweet, easy-drinking beverage and the flavours of lychee and pineapple were a delight. It's very chic to be sitting with a China Moon in hand. Like any good Chinese restaurant, take-out is a major component of the business. However, another more recent update has been the addition of a buffet. For the exceedingly reasonable price of $31 (every day of the week) you can feast upon some of The Lingnan's most popular dishes. I have enjoyed the buffet on several occasions in the past but on this particular visit I was interested in sampling some of the restaurants more upscale and unique dishes. But first let's take a moment for the Dry Spicy Chicken. An entire blog could be written about this dish alone. In fact, this chicken used to have its own restaurant. A true staple Edmontonian dish and affectionately nicknamed "crack chicken," we all mourn the loss of Chicken for Lunch. Operating out of the Rice Howard Place food court (lunchtime on weekdays only) and run by Amy Quon herself, this place used to attract immense lineups. Why? I mean, they did sell a variety of items but everyone was there for the addictive Hot and Dry chicken. Amy always treated everyone like they were someone special and she still does. With Chicken for Lunch gone, all is not lost because this famous chicken is still on the menu at The Lingnan! The service is great. Nice dining room in the back for large groups. We asked for no MSG on our food, but there was tons! You could see how the green veggies were practically florescent. My husband gets very sick from it. The previously frozen shrimp was soggy. The meats were covered in the typical syrupy glaze. The green onion cakes were delicious, but mostly dough. We have been a loyal LINGNAN customer for 50 years and this is what I got today when I called LINGNAN to place the takeout dinner for 2. I don't eat chicken and wanted to sub out the chicken rice and chicken chow mein with mushroom. Was told it would be an additional charge of 5.50, I said no problem, but then the call taker noted they would only sub 1 item after i noted I don't eat chicken. The young lady said I would need to buy each item individually instead. It was not a problem in the past, as I noted to the lady but now it's a case of laziness to accommodate and overcharge customers for anything when it's an inconvenience for them. Delicious Chinese food for large groups. They have a decent sized buffet. Ice only come here with large groups and for good reason. The service is awesome for large groups and the food is quite good. It's more American style Chinese food so it's a tad heavy. But every morsel is delicious and will satisfy any persons appetite for Chinese food. I guarantee you will be stuffed if you come here. My parents moved to Edmonton in 1956, the first restaurant they took us to was Lingnan think it was at its current location . It was outstanding then outstanding now . When my family celebrates the best of our occasions we do it at Lingnan . When I order take out/delivery and recommend to anyone it's always Lingnan . I've enjoyed the opportunity to visit Chinese restaurants throughout Edmonton and across Canada. Must say Lingnan simply JUST THE BEST. Still the go to for a nice Chinese dinner out. Amy will always remember your face - it blows me mind how she can remember and recognize my kids when she hasn't seen them in a year! Favourites here will always be Amy's crack chicken (dry spicy chicken), their giant egg rolls, and seafood bird's nest. This year we also came for Chinese New Year and tried out their buffet. I don't eat a lot at once so the price for me is better to order a la carte and take food home but the kids and fam jam really enjoyed getting to try so many dishes. And of course Amy had lucky envelopes and treats for the kids and adults, alike! We will most definitely be back! I only wish Quon Dynasty was on the Food Network for an updated season :-) read more

I'm not sure how I've lived in Edmonton for so long and managed to miss out on the Lingnan but that won't be a problem going forward. While I've had takeout a few times, I recently learned that nothing beats the in-person experience. First off, the space is incredible. It's like stepping back in time to a fancy Chinese restaurant in the 70s. I love the decor and design choices. The menu is fairly extensive with lots of vegetarian options. I highly recommend the vegetarian mapo tofu if you're looking for something with a bit of kick. They also have a very reasonably priced drink menu and special pricing on their buffet on game days and weekends. Service is quick and friendly. Very disappointed. We hadn't been there for many years but decided to try it again as it used to be good and had good reviews. The decor is old and dated and it was so dark I had to use my phone to look at the menu. We decided on the buffet and were brought a very small bowl of won ton soup with 2 wontons. The buffet only had about 10 items and we had to wait for someone to bring some spring rolls, which were mushy inside. The desert was one small Chinese donut, which was probably the best thine we ate. The service was okay but I felt like we were being rushed to pay the bill and leave the minute we finished eating. Also I do not do well with MSG and found out the next day, after feeling very unwell that they use it on almost everything. We will definitely not be going back. read more

I placed an order bright and early, eager for a pick-up as soon as the doors creaked open. With a good half-hour drive ahead, The star of the show? I haven't been here for awhile (2018) and I am not sure why. This place is great. I really recommend if you are able to eat inside. The Lingnan is glamorous as in 1974 glamourous. It is nostolgic. The cocktails are from the 70s and I am sure the menu hasn't much either. But it is beautiful and fun. Service was a bit on the slow night, but our server was full of apologies. Menu is basic Westren style with most things being pretty familiar but more upscale. For the people who are undecided, there are set menus with a combination of different items. We decided not to thise becasue I had a few things in mind. So we chose the dishes - dry spicy chicken, Ginger Beef, Scallops with Peapods, Lingnan Chop Suey, and Lingnan Fried Rice. I had a Red Lotus cocktail, and my husband went with a Ceaser. Food came out promptly. Love that the put hot warming trays under the dishes to keep them warm. Everything was plentiful and good. The stand outs for my husband was the dry spicy chicken and the ginger beef. The dry spicy chicken had a light and flavourful batter, and was mostly chicken rather than many places that do the chicken balls that have 80% batter and 20% chicken. The chicken also had a kick to it. I also loved the Ginger Beef. It was flavourful and had an amazing sauce that was not too sweet. And I loved that the beef wasn't stringy and dry. The batter was rich. I don't usually even like this dish in general and I had three portions. My favourite was the Lingnan Chop Suey. They didn't skimp on the rich sauce and it was swimming with shrimp and bean sprouts. My other favourite was scallops with peapods. It was heavy on the peapods and light on the scallops, however, scallops were flavourful. The scallops were larger and not overcooked which can happen. And the peapods were bright. The sauce was great that it didn't overpower the delicated dish. The fried rice was fine, but didn't stand out in comparision to other places. What was really nice is that included a sweet Chinese donut that was sitting in the base of condensed milk with cinnamon. It was the perfect end to the evening. Price point is a little more than the average place, however I feel it is worth every penny. And also it is amazing to sit in a place of history. read more

Absolutely amazing! Lots of gluten free options as well. I first went a couple years ago in high school for Christmas Eve with my family, and it was a buffet night. I tried the lemon chicken, a soup (brought for me being gluten free, not the original soup), the Szechuan beef, lots of vegetable options (best broccoli ever), and great gluten free spring rolls. This was one of our family Chinese food adventures, we try to check out somewhere new on occasion with the family who quite enjoy Chinese food. Overall we all enjoyed it and there were definitely no leftovers. We ordered our usual seafood chow mein which everyone enjoyed here and we actually ended up ordering a second as it was the favoured dish of the night. We also tried the wor wonton soup which gave all 6 of us a good serving of it with plenty of vegetables and wontons. And of course we had to test out the crack chicken- super good! Next time we would interested to try the Kung pow chicken. Decor wise it was super unique, loved the ceilings. Parking was great there was plenty of street parking for all us and so nice not to have to pay for parking but that was because it was a Sunday. read more

I've been enjoying the food from this restaurant for over forty years, and it still is great today as it was 40 years ago. The majority of that time were orders placed over the phone and delivered, the fellow delivering Alan has been with her company for at least 40 years as well and is excellent prompt polite. When I spoil myself and enjoy going to the restaurant, I have to tell you the food always is delicious and the service beyond exceptional, a family own business I've met them all delightful, it becomes very obvious why they are so successful this family works exceptionally hard and I've never seen staff continually running to see that everybody has served promptly and with the best service possible this is an Edmonton staple I highly recommend if you're a fan of Chinese food, this restaurant will be you're number one choice I promise.ENJOY read more

I have heard about this but have never been until now. I really liked the decor and atmosphere. We ordered Crushed almond chicken and Shanghai noodles and an egg roll. Friends ordered egg foo young, a shrimp dish and Szechuan beef. The food was good, I loved the egg roll and the plum sauce for the egg roll was outstanding. So outstanding I ate it with the almond chicken as well. I have never had plum sauce before that did not come out of a little packet. The almond chicken was done very well although I thin it could use a sauce for flavour. The Shanghai noodles were good, not the best I have had, but very good. All dishes were very disable and we took lots of leftovers home. I also tried one piece of shrimp and one piece of beef that my friend ordered. I ordered the dry spicy chicken which we probably ate the whole box before we got home it was so good. The ginger beef was very unexciting and quite sweet for my liking. I've always wanted to try this restaurant since I heard about it when it was featured on the food network. A couple years ago I also had the pleasure of trying "chicken for lunch" at Scotia place and it was delicious so naturally I only expected lingnans to not disappoint! When I called to make a reservation, I was greeted by the very friendly owner of the restaurant who was courteous and very jovial on the phone. When my fiancee and I arrived to meet our family, we found lots of parking outside which was surprising since it's located adjacent to Roger's place. For all hockey fans, they seem to have a buffet special leading up to the games. The service was fantastic. Our servers were friendly and they even provided us with free dessert and a free Virgin Shirley Temple for my 4 year old niece. It was family friendly with a high chair for my 8 month year old niece as well. We ordered the lemon chicken, green onion cake, Shanghai noodles, shrimp and peaches with cream sauce and pork fried rice. The food was definitely more westernized Chinese food but it was all very fresh and tasty! Most importantly, the food came out super quick which was helpful for my starving little 4 year old niece. Being an Edmonton local, it was one of my life goals to try this place since they used to have a reality TV show about this restaurant. I've tried their mall food court extension downtown called "chicken for lunch" but this place is even better. Parking was surprisingly good considering We went on a game night at rogers place. They have a parking lot at the back, but also 2h angle parking in front of the building entrance. The exterior seems a little downtown sketchy, but once you are in, it's quite immersive in Chinese culture. The walls, the lanterns, the artwork, it's ornate and opulent. There appears to be 3 dining sections, we were seated near the buffet and bar area. High chairs are available, but no change table in the women's washroom, although it was very clean & modern in there. They take reservations, although there was plenty of seating throughout our time there. Service is friendly and Amy (I think is one of the owners) greets every table. The tableware screams retro which I don't mind, keeps the vibe eclectic along with the fish tank. We opted out of the $26 buffet & ordered 4 dishes plus appetizer for 4 adults, toddler and baby. Service speed for main dishes definitely falls towards the end of the 15 minute waiting average. However, it was all served at once & there were no leftovers, we were uncomfortably full after. Warning though, the food is Western style Chinese so expect a lot of fried dishes...still tasty though. My kid even got a free Shirley temple drink and Amy even hooked us up with a free dessert of Chinese donut bites covered in cinnamon sugar sauce! Mmm so good! I do feel like the food was good value for the money too. Overall, it was an original take on a Chinese dining experience with a comfortable family atmosphere. I can't believe that I hadn't written a review for The Lingnan! Five stars! Five stars! Every time I bring the family into this gem of a restaurant, we always come out with huge smiles and happy tummies. Every dish that I've ever tried from The Lingnan has been fabulous! My favorites are the egg rolls, their wonton soup and Amy's famous dry spicy chicken. (The trophy wife loves the seafood bird's nest!) They have recently started serving a wonderful buffet on Saturdays and also to correspond with Oilers' home games. As far as Chinese-Canadian cuisine goes, one would be hard-pressed to find a better place than The Lingnan. If you are fortunate enough to be greeted by Amy herself, then you will experience the warmest hospitality of any restaurant you've ever been to. All due to our last visit, my kids have decided that The Lingnan is now their favorite restaurant. I have to admit, they have impeccable taste. read more

This is probably one of my favourite Chinese places in the City. One reason I like it is that they can serve my other half a safe gluten free meal. This is a long running family business in Edmonton and the family are somewhat celebrities as well. They were stars of a reality TV show "The Quon Dynasty" (2011-2012), and also "Family Restaurant". It was a fun look into their family and the behind the scenes running of their family businesses. The family is really great and they get to know their customers. The restaurant is very decorated with pieces imported from China which gives the place a very unique ambience. It may be a plain cinder block building on the outside but once inside it is just the opposite. They also do take-out of course so we often do that. In the past parking hadn't been an issue but with all of the downtown construction I am not sure what that is like anymore. The food has always been good for us. One of their special items is their "Crack Chicken" which is listed as spicy dry chicken I believe. If you are into food trucks and you like chinese food then check theirs out. This is a tough one for me, because I think The Lingnan is one of the most beautiful restaurants in the city. It's immensely charming and the decor is absolutely gorgeous; bright colours and textures all over everything from the chairs to the ceiling. But the food is just okay. It's just okay, guys! And it's fairly expensive, for what it is. We had the buffet, which is nearly $30 and seems to be an exercise in breading over meat and blandness over flavor. I'm not sure why the menu is the way it is... maybe game day crowds just want dull Canadianized food? I don't know. But it's very pricey for what it is, and I can't see myself going back any time soon, not for the cardboard wontons or the pineapple 'chicken' balls or the stringy beef dishes. Visiting The Lingnan is like a quick trip back to 1989 for me. My parents would often take me to a place like this where we'd get sweet and sour pork , and the chicken that comes with those little deep fried colorful chips. Does this restaurant hold up today? Today in 2015, they still serve amazing lemon chicken, and feature drinks like Harvey Wallbangers, tequila sunrises and planters punch. Walking into The Lingnan, with their waiters in traditional Chinese outfits, is like walking into an amusement park called "Western Chinese Restaurant". I'm not going to write about the authentic quality of it's Chinese food (it's not) but instead I'll write about it's targeted clientele and feel of The Lingnan. The Lingnan obviously caters to one group. When I was there, the restaurant was half full and besides the servers, there were no Chinese people anywhere else. It was just me, and another couple who were at the birthday dinner we attended. The rest of the room had the type of demographics you would see on a cruise to the Panama canal with a 4pm Lunch buffet featuring the Golden Tones of Pat Boone and the Chickadees.
