Coming here was a dream come true. Lingnan was always been on my Edmonton bucket list. I'm glad I went... but I'll never go again.
The exterior, with its iconic sign and stunning, full -wall mural, are almost out of place in this nondescript section of downtown. It stands out in a good way - great way, in fact.
The interior exceeds the exterior in its beauty. From the majestic ceiling above to the golden highlights throughout, the dinning area is like all the awesome chinese restaurants you always wanted to visit in the movies. In this, Lingnan doesn't disappoint. The atmosphere is perfect and it truly is second to none in the city. It feels like the most (movie-stereotype) Chinese restaurant in Edmonton.
I wish I could end the review there. I wish I could have walked in and walked out as I would have been over the moon. Bucket list = Check!
However, no restaurant review is complete without a review of the food. The food, simply put, was disappointing. Having had Chicken for Lunch numerous times, I assumed that what I would have here would have been the same if not better then the offerings in a mall food court. Same owners, same food, right? How wrong I was. This was the blandest Chinese food I have had in some time. Especially for the price paid (~$20 per popular dish), you would expect much better.
As a large group, we ordered 8 dishes. My party was looking for traditional western Chinese so our list included won ton soup, Szechuan beef, Goo Lo sweet and sour pork, lemon chicken, chicken fried rice, Shanghai noodles, the "crack" chicken and beef with mixed greens. The Classics. From that list, nothing stood out save for the beef with mixed greens. It had some redeeming qualities such as freshness and crunch. As for the others... the noodles had a unappealing sour sauce and were somewhat dry overall. The lemon chicken was nondescript. The pork tasted off to me but no one else complained. The Szechuan beef was flavourless, missing the distinct flavour one might expect. There was no heat to it whatsoever. Speaking of heat, there was absolutely none on the hot and dry "crack" chicken. It was beyond dry and tasteless to the point where I didn't even recognize it. It was nothing like Amy's version. Wow. All I know is all of the meat dishes still had food left on the serving plate which is never a good sign. The first plate to empty? The beef with mixed greens.
You may wonder why we wouldn't say anything to the kitchen. Aside from the pork that I alone questioned, everything else is what you come to expect from western Chinese food. It wasn't that is was bad (the pork?), it just wasn't good. I can find this quality pretty much anywhere at substantially lower prices.
I know it's an Edmonton institution but, to be honest, I'm not sure why. If you come, soak in as much of the atmosphere as you can. Enjoy it as that is certainly worth the money - unlike the food. read more
