Legacy Post from 2019 I tried Hot Wok a few times. They have pretty good service and decent settings. In terms of food, it's decent Chinese food (probably one of the better ones if considering the location) so I'd give them 7/10 read more

My husband has been wanting to try this place out for a long time. Too bad we didn't come sooner. We've been missing out! The food was so good that we were making plans to come back before we even finished our meal! The Butter Chicken. Not to be confused with the Northern Indian dish. If you love crispy chicken this dish is for you. The crunchiness was so satisfying! I'm salivating just thinking about it. We ordered another serving before we even finished our first. It was that good. Salted Fish Chicken Fried Rice. Soft and fluffy rice with pieces of chicken. With just a subtle flavour of fish. Loved this. Long Green Beans. This was a great suggestion by one of the staff. The beans were crunchy and seasoned well. Even my baby enjoyed eating this! Corn soup. Not pictured. So good. We started our meal with this but I forgot to take a picture! My baby liked this too! Cantonese Chow Mein. Jam packed full of vegetables, shrimp and meat. Delicious and exactly what I was hoping for. Overall, my family was super impressed by the authentic Chinese food here. Some of the dishes were not on the English part (front part) of the menu. Prior to coming I had done some research on Yelp and online to find out what dishes were recommended. We enjoyed our meal and will be back again soon! I can't wait to try out more dishes! read more

The Glutinous Rice Stuffed Chicken Wing is the dish Hot Wok is known for and it is a signature dish. Each wing is $5 but it's a substantial dish and the amount of labour required justifies the price. The wing they use is a flat with the tip attached, it does not have the drumette. The two bones in the flat are removed and then it's stuffed with the glutinous rice. The whole thing is deep fried so that it's crispy and holds together. The butter chicken is my next favourite dish and it is not an Indian curry like the name suggests. It is chicken legs/drums that are chopped into smaller pieces then slightly battered and deep fried then tossed in butter, salt, and chilli flakes. I've eaten here four times and the most recent time we were sat near the crab tanks that are close to the bathroom hallway. There was a distinct sewage smell that had some powerful perfume trying to mask it. I discovered that it was coming from the bathroom when I went to wash my hands. I would strongly urge sitting near the front windows instead. The restaurant is definitely a hole in the wall so don't come here expecting any more. The fish tanks are mostly empty and dark, the dining room could use some deep cleaning, there's a stack of chairs in the corner, and the empty cans and bottles are out in the open. There are a few different menus that are offered depending on the type of customer you are. The English menu has dishes that westerners would recognize. The Chinese menu isn't even written in English and has the more adventurous items. The prices feel like they are pre-pandemic rates and it's quite affordable for a group to dine here and be full with leftovers. The location isn't horrible since it has free parking and it's near a main corridor but there can be some unsavoury characters in this hood. I think a lot of people choose to order take out instead of dining in and it you live close by that's completely reasonable. read more

We ordered in from Hot Wok last night and it was mediocre. The last time we brought food in from them, everything was really good and fresh. Last night the lemon chicken was on point, but the usual Chinese take out suspects - BBQ pork chow mein, sweet and sour pork, and ginger beef, were all soggy and bland, and tasted like they may have been sitting in a chafing dish for a few hours. I've heard good things about the rice stuffed chicken wings, and might recommend going in to eat instead of takeout. 3 stars because the lemon chicken was fresh and crispy and delicious. read more

This restaurant relocated a while ago and is much nicer than the old location but still in a sketchy area. It is next to a daycare but has parking in front of it or along the street. It is also easily assessable by bus. The tables are not crammed together and there are two large tv's should you enjoy some entertainment as you dine. Daily chef specials are posted on the wall and the menu offers a large variety of a la carte dishes. It was quiet on a week night but quite a few customers came for takeout. We enjoyed the bean curd hot pot which contained lots of meat and veggies. The plate of peaches and shrimp was on the small side but the shrimp were large. The lamb hot pot was also a bit small but it wasn't that expensive and the beef and gai lan was a good sized portion. This is a great place for families to enjoy authentic Chinese food at a good price! read more

The most recent take out order from here was outstanding. I feel like the actual owners were cooking and answering the phone (due to the realities of current COVID-19). In return, the portions were huge, freshly made and full of flavour! Our usual order includes "butter chicken" (amazing deep fried pieces of chicken with a spicy/sweet dry rub seasoning); salty fish chicken fried rice, special fried rice, stir fried beef rice noodles. I personally think Hot Wok is great value for your money. The dishes are large and are good quality. We mainly stick to the beef with vegetables, cashew chicken and peaches and prawns. The prawns are really big and are good. Okay atmosphere. Doesn't look like much from the outside but better inside. Again, head here if you're looking for good food and value. read more

I've never been a believer in serendipity but a lucky accident happened to us. The restaurant where we celebrated an important milestone in our lives for the past 30 years closed due to LRT construction so we were driving along Stony Plain Road in search of an alternative. I spotted Chinese characters on a side street and went to investigate. The Hot Wok appears to be another hole-in-the-wall restaurant except that the parking lot was full of classy automotive machinery, always a good sign. We decided to check out the place and were greeted by a sea of Asian families seated around tables for 8-10, another good sign for an Asian restaurant. Luckily, one of the two tables for four was free and we were seated right away. I note that one review complains about the treatment of the elderly. I can say that one of us has a cane and we were treated with the utmost courtesy while we were there. Hopefully, the situation that was described was simply a cultural cross-glitch. The servers showed us the utmost patience selecting items from the Chinese and English menus so we were patient in return with the staff's passable English and leisurely service. Actually, we prefer when the main courses arrive after we've had time to enjoy the soup. Speaking of which, the wonton soup was the only item that wasn't perfect. The wontons were great and there were slices of BBQ pork and veg but the base was tasteless. Super soup requires a chicken broth base. Otherwise, the Shanghai noodles and the dried fish hotpot were great. Two people can't sample the whole menu in one evening so we will return with friends and dig deeper into the Hot Wok's repertoire. read more

The food served up at Hot Wok is pretty good, my friends. It should satisfy most people who crave an authentic-ish Chinese dining experience. Staff there should refrain from rounding up or down any amounts of money to be paid by credit card or debit card, though. For electronic transactions, you don't do that and when I pointed that out to one of the staff members recently, she made a bit of a dramatic production about it all. That was unwelcome. Rounding is for cash transactions only. The penny still exists for electronic transactions. Recommended. read more

We walked in and there was lipstick on two of the cups. I saw the owner blow her nose without washing her hands and then serving food. This was last week before the conovirus shutdown. When I paid, she actually said that I didn't leave enough of a tip and that she has to pay her other server. I actually called her out in front of everyone inside the restaurant and said the dishes are dirty and she didn't wash her hands after blowing her nose and serving food and I am scared what the kitchen does and she was speechless. Don't let the neighborhood or exterior appearances deceive you, this oriental café is a real find. Clean and bright interior. Genuine welcome - with polite service from start to finish. A good indicator of a quality restaurant is the straight forward menu. Hot work does not have 100 items that usually all taste the same - focus on the prime dishes with attention to quality....We tried the dinner for 4 - and was pleasantly impressed with the flavours. The tasty dishes served piping hot and with pride. The sweet and sour pork chops are best in town! Clean washrooms. Pleasant service. We will be returning soon. read more

Two of us were there Nov. 16 shortly after they opened. We have been there several times to dine in, take out and Skip The Dishes. Every time the food is a nice hot temperature and very, very tasty. Have tried many different menu items and all were great. It's nice and quiet, soft music playing. Food portions are large. Meat items are meat, not some meat and mainly vegetables like a lot of places serve up. Service is fast and pleasant. read more

I picked up food here because they didn't have delivery. The food was nothing to write home about - it was edible, but the ginger beef was disappointing! Prior to getting my food (I called ahead), there was an elderly couple (the only customers) that had just sat down prior to me coming in. They realized where they were sitting was cold because of the door and they asked if they could sit further over. The woman (I assume owner) heard them and ignored them. The elderly couple got up (canes and all) and went to another table. She then got mad at them for moving and told them "when there's 2 people you sit on the other side not over here! At 6:00 we get busy with OTHER people!" (As if these 2 white elderly ppl were not important enough). The elderly gentleman said "we just eat quick, we always have the same thing as usual and we will be out of here by 6:00". The woman (owner) huffed and puffed while she wiped the table and the elderly gentleman tried to give her their order (without even looking at the menus). They ordered ginger beef, lemon chicken, chow Mein, and rice...and the owner walked away from them mid order. Clearly these two customers are regulars and she treated them like GARBAGE! I was so disgusted that I was ready to walk out but I had paid for my food already - before this disgusting rudeness started! I WILL NEVER GO HERE AGAIN! I HATE to bring race into this, but this Chinese lady was beyond rude and clearly was discriminating against these two white elderly people and if this was a Chinese person being treated this way, it would not be tolerated! I completely regret not having raised the roof for that elderly couple! The only reason I didn't is because the elderly man seemed to be handling the situation and taking care of his wife. went there for dinner. it was for a birthday so i had called in advance to ask if it was okay to bring cake (knowing that some restaurants charge). the lady on the phone said it was okay. when i got there they told me that that there would be a 15% charge. i told them that i was not told that over the phone when i called. 15% is very unreasonable considering the total of our bill. they said it was a misunderstanding which i expected them to take responsibility for but they were still going to charge us. there was a communication barrier because the lady on the phone did not speak english and just said "ok" to me over the phone. even though the food was good and the waiters were nice, that part was very disappointing. read more
