a cup of tea and a teapot

I'm not sure what it is about Edmonton but there's a lot of good pho here. It's better here than in most other cities in Canada (and I have tested this theory quite extensively). I have tried the best and most popular pho restaurants in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal... And my favourite bowl remains right here in Edmonton. The bar is high and so are my standards. Most people in Edmonton have "their place" for pho, as do I, and one of the spots that I tend to hear quite a lot about is Pho Hoan Pasteur. They've been around since 2005 and now have five locations in the Edmonton area (and four in Calgary). Lots of people adore this place; VUE Weekly named them #1 Best Vietnamese 2018 and #1 Best Bargain 2018. Avenue Magazine awarded them Best Multi-Location Restaurant 2019. For many people in Edmonton, Pho Hoan Pasteur is their place for pho. By now you know that I'm a sucker for the OGs, so I visited the original Prince Rupert location for my first visit. North of the core in a strip mall, this is kinda exactly the type of location where I like to feast on pho. They've got yellow signage with red lettering and they refer to themselves as a "fusion noodle house." Upon entering the restaurant I was met immediately by the delicious aromas of steeping broth, which I felt was a very good sign for my near future. The dining room is larger than you'd expect and quite simple in decor. The colours are muted and everything is clean and straight forward. Each table is adorned with the usual accoutrements; sauces and seasonings to enhance your experience. Seated in a booth, we were delivered a complimentary pot of tea, a typical practice. Our server was quiet and efficient, bringing our food in no time at all. The warm tea tasted like a green genmaicha type to me, and I greatly enjoyed sipping on it throughout the meal. If anything, I noticed that the teapot was too clean! (Which in fact, I did appreciate. It was a nice departure.) They also serve Vietnamese coffees, several types of blended drinks, and even bubble tea, however I was happy to stay with my nice little tea situation. The menu is fairly extensive and it starts with an appetizer section. We probably should have gone with something extra classic like the spring rolls or very Edmontonian like the onion cakes. But instead ordered the Gỏi Cuốn (Shrimp salad rolls - $6.25). A seemingly safe choice in its own right. The rolls appeared pretty standard and I liked the looks of the peanutty sate dipping sauce on the side. I grabbed a roll and took a bite and was sadly underwhelmed. My roll barely had any flavour and was filled with tasteless lettuce and rice noodles (two of the plainest things that you can think of) and nothing more. The roll did contain two shrimp. Thankfully the shrimp were alright. But the worst part was the rice paper wrapping, which had hardened quite a lot in some spots. I'm not sure if this meant that they weren't fresh but biting into something hard and difficult to chew is not what you want with a salad roll. The flavourful sauce couldn't save it. I was really hoping that the pho itself would redeem everything! I mean, that's what they're famous for. In addition to pho, Pho Hoan Pasteur has a large section of vermicelli bowls on the menu and many of them sound very good. But the beef noodle soup is what they're known for and that's what I was planning to eat. I was thrilled to find my favourite type; Phở Tái Chín (Steak & brisket - $14.00 for small). Garnished with white onions, scallions, cilantro and parsley, their pho is also served with a side plate of beansprouts, basil and lemon. There are three sizes of pho available; small, large and extra large. I normally find the small size to be plenty because it's also pretty large! The colours in the bowl looked beautiful and the deep broth tantalized me. Armed with chopsticks in one hand and a spoon in the other, I was ready to do some serious pho-king damage. My first issue was with the side plate of garnishes. I used a bit of everything provided, however I noted that there was no sawtooth coriander and no chili peppers. These are both normally offered at some of the best pho restaurants. After tasting the broth (always taste first before seasoning!) I added a bit of hoisin sauce and hot sauce to my preference level. These were both readily available on our table. I liked this pho! The meat was all very tender and served pink, continuing to cook in the hot soup. I liked that none of it was too fatty and the slices seemed to be of good quality. The noodles were nice and loose, not stuck together in a big ball. And the vegetables were fresh and crisp. But of course the most important component of pho is the broth. I look for a deep, serious depth of flavour and this one did not disappoint! I liked the robust flavour profile a lot, and it certainly wasn't thin and watered down like in some places. Many spices go into a pho broth and most restaurants have their own special recipes. I went to this place based on a suggestion that I read in tomato magazine... It was from an existing restauranteur who is Vietnamese, and he said for comfort food he likes to go to this place. So I thought definitely for sure to go check it out, and I wasn't disappointed. Definitely average to above average Vietnamese soup, I ordered my typical pho, salad rolls, and green onion cakes and all were pretty darn good. Nothing mind blowing here but definitely you can tell it's a busy place and they serve up a consistent product at pretty good prices. I will be back!

Pho Hoan Pasteur is a staple for when you want to eat quality, consistent Vietnamese food. A second location opened up in the north side last year (see my review here) to give Co Do Hue a run for their money. But that's beside the point - we're here to talk about Pho Hoan Pasteur original location. The OG. Located right on Kingsway Avenue, you can't miss it - just look for the massive Superstore in the same plaza. I've been to Hoan Pasteur a handful of times by now and seriously, you can't go wrong with any of their pho bowls. The bun bo hue, sour and spicy seafood and beef sate pho are a few of my favourites. They're always busy but I've never had to wait for a table. Service is lightning fast and they have the BEST tea. Seriously, heavenly. Bonus, they're one of the few places that come back and bring you new tea when you run out. The menu consists of three short pages. A couple appetizers, rice plates, vermicelli, beef pho and chicken pho. That's it folks. - Bun bo hue (#22) ($10.50 large) - the bun bo hue is delicious. So much flavour and depth, this is how BBH should be. You get a variety of meats (the beef balls are the best) and the onions add a little bit of sweetness to the broth. Nice level of heat without overpowering the main attraction. - Pho tai (#1) ($9.50 small) - O's staple whenever we go for pho (which seems all the time). The broth is excellent and look at the nice marbling on their beef. Even though it was a small bowl, she was easily stuffed. Pho Hoan Pasteur never fails to impress me. The food is delicious, constantly consistent and the prices are easy on the wallet. There's a reason it's always packed with customers. Go up to the till to pay when you're done. I think I'm due for a visit right about now.

Number 35: Grilled Pork Vermicelli with Spring Rolls! Love it!

Pho Hoan Pasteur is a must for anyone who enjoys Vietnamese comfort food. This busy diner is an absolute classic! Love it! After a long day of moving house, I ordered my go-to favorite: Grilled Pork Vermicelli with Spring Rolls!! Three words: Hits. The. Spot. I can't think of another Vietnamese diner that does the grilled pork so well!! Of course, the problem is that I rarely end up trying anything else on the menu, because I just can't resist my favorite dish! After spending much of the summer in the Southern United States, coming home to a place like Pho Hoan Pasteur reminds us of the truly Canadian experience. The restaurant is filled with young and old, men and women, students, professionals, and every color of the rainbow! All of us gathering to enjoy wonderful Vietnamese food!

#10 Beef Brisket and Meatball in Beef Broth Delicious!

I came late to the Pho Party, but I came hard... I had eaten Vietnamese food for years, but never grasped the big soup concept. I was from a European background where soup was not a meal, it came with the meal. To my narrow mind big soup was like filling up on breadsticks. There would be no room for the good stuff. I am better informed now, and these days Pho and Bun make up the bulk of my Vietnamese intake. Tonight I took in Pho Hoan Pasteur where I was tentatively to have met a friend. It was his suggestion, as we had been comparing Pho notes. We had not really confirmed, but as I was craving hot soup on a cold day, I stopped by anyway. First thing, I was lucky to get a table. This place is very popular, and was still rocking when I left an hour later. I was seated at a deuce by a friendly waitress who then set me up with a menu and a pot of tea in short order. I took a while with the menu, as this was my first visit, and I can see myself coming back here often to explore. I selected a small bowl of #10 Beef Brisket and Meatball in Beef Broth. The bean sprouts, mint leaves and a lemon wedge came in a couple of minutes, and the bowl hit the table in 5. I had a good taste of the broth before I went condiment happy, and it was wonderful. Smooth, clean and clear with a nice aftertaste. Once I introduced it to my friends Hoisin, Sriracha and Sambal Olek it became even better. All in all, this was a damn fine bowl of Pho. In all honesty, I have not found many BAD bowls of Pho, and I can easily think of 5 or 6 places in town that put up a worthy bowl. This was as good as any of them. I was impressed by the operation. I see a lot of small family noodle houses that do a good business, but this place is a machine. They must do a monster lunch trade, and the turnover is something. Even the name is ideal. Tellingly Vietnamese, but with an undertone of hygiene... These folks have several locations in Edmonton and a couple in Calgary, but my sources tell me this is the best location. Nice folks, clean restaurant, great food, great service. Four Stars from me because I never go all the way on a first visit.

Good pho, would recommend coming here not around lunch time as this pl pace is usually very packed. My mom ordered a vermicelli bowl and she said it was good, although she said it might be better if they could add 2 spring rolls instrad of 1 only. My aunt ordered a rice plate with pork chops, chicken ans she said it was pretty good although thr fish sauce was very sweet.

came in on a wednesday afternoon for lunch and it was quite busy. our server was an easy going young man who was super easy to talk to. for starters we ordered: vegetable spring rolls - i could taste that oil used to fry them was old or at least due for a change green onion cake - average, nothing out of this world then we later ordered: large #14 pho - delicious broth, perfect amount of aromatic, perfect vermicelli and great protein portion #35 vermicelli bowl - pork had such a great flavour all out dishes came out very quickly and were super hot! overall, the service here is very good and in terms of strictly pho i would 100% recommend this place. however, if looking for any other Vietnamese dishes.. i'd say look else where. i would come back though!

This is one of my favourite vietnamese places for soup and appetizers. The rice and vermicelli dishes are mediocre in comparison so make sure to order what they specialize in. If I come with a big group I like to order as many appetizers as possible as it's similar to vietnamese street foods like crepes, tapioca dumplings and deep fried goodies. All of it is authentic and delicious. My must orders here are the duck salad and soup combo. It's what I come here for as no other place in edmonton has it on the menu that I know of. And it's pretty darn delicious. If I don't get that. The bun bo hue is loaded with so many meats that I never can finish it! I can't wait to go back to this locally owned business run by a family. Little has changed on the interior, except for the addition of a large fish tank. The menu is very typical of Vietnamese noodle houses, featuring a good selection of pho noodle soup, vermicelli noodle bowls, and rice dishes. I opted for a bowl of pho with medium sliced beef and brisket. My soup was full of meat which was reasonably tender and lean, and came in a broth that was well-seasoned. Colleen, my co-Volunteer Coordinator, ordered a bowl of Thai spicy pho, and she ordered it without any meat. She was happy with the flavour of her soup and its abundance of noodles. I started with a green onion cake, finding the two large rings of fried dough and green onions to be large and not too greasy, as well as a bit cheaper than I've had elsewhere. I also decided to do something I rarely do when I order pho - even though I find the complimentary green tea and broth from the soup to be more than enough liquid intake for one meal, I decided to try one of the iced drinks. Being a dreary winter day I felt some extra vitamin C was in order, and opted for a glass of fresh-squeezed orange juice. It was incredibly fresh and full of pulp - I literally felt like I was drinking an orange in liquid form. Prices are in line, if not lower, than other Vietnamese restaurants in the area. Our entire meal, which also included a can of pop for Colleen, cost less than $25 before the tip. Service was fast and friendly and neither of us had any complaints about the food. Winter is the perfect time for a steaming bowl of pho, so consider heading to Viet Huong.

Certainly a point of pride in our city! From the best phở in the country (King Noodle), near-perfect bánh mì (Van Loc), delicious plant-based fare (An Chay), to innovative street food expressions that you've never tasted before (Mãi Mãi)... We've got it all. And it's the best of the best. XO Bistro + Bar throws their name into the ring with a more elevated and modern Vietnamese dining experience, demonstrating that there's a sophisticated side to Viet food that demands representation as well. VUE Weekly loved this restaurant and named them #1 Best Vietnamese, #1 Best Late Night/All Night, and #1 Best Happy Hour in 2018. First opened in 2017 and now with two locations, I visited the original Downtown spot on a Saturday evening, anxiously anticipating the symphony of flavours ahead. XO Bistro is in good company on Edmonton's famous boardwalk street which is lined with a collection of many popular restaurants. The parking is a nightmare and the small handful of street parking spots always seem to be taken. But you'll figure it out. With its proximity to the ICE District you can easily imagine that this restaurant has been able to take advantage of the pre-game dinner crowd and post-game spillover from the Moss Pit. The restaurant is larger than you might imagine, with its soaring second-storey ceiling and filled with dark moody finishes and an impressive bar completing the lounge vibe. However, the real show-stopper is the life-sized cherry blossom tree right in the entranceway, covered in pink blossoms. This tree serves as a major focal point and it's difficult to take your eyes off of it! The servers are cheerful and friendly, and although there were no window tables available we were seated comfortably. Priding themselves on their cocktail program, I knew that an XO Original was a must and soon I found the Good Morning Vietnam (Gin, Soho, hibiscus, lime juice, lychee puree - $15.00) in my hand. A cocktail to match the restaurant perfectly! I loved that this beverage was fresh and fruity and wasn't too strong. Pretty and drinkable, the sweet flavour of lychee took the lead while tart notes from the lime and hibiscus leveled the beverage out. Without a doubt, the correct drink to sip on under the blush-hued blooms! XO Bistro's goal is to serve food that isn't always traditional but is always authentic. Bold, balanced flavours inspired by the everyday energy of Ho Chi Minh, Hanoi, and Da Nang. The liveliness and fresh takes are apparent on the menu right away and I was excited to order some dishes that felt new. Starting with appetizers, the Double Trouble (Rice paper, shrimp, lettuce, vermicelli, tangy fish sauce. Choice of pork or veggie spring roll - $11.25) stood out as something fun to try. Can't choose between a spring roll or a fresh roll? Get both! I loved this playful version and especially enjoyed getting to eat two types of rolls instead of just one! We chose the pork spring roll for the inside and I loved the textural crunch and juicy pork that it provided. Meanwhile, the outside was wrapped in rice paper, acting as a window to the shrimp enveloped within. Dunking each bite into the zippy fish sauce added just the right acidity. Wonderfully tasty, so much fun to eat, and striking presentation to boot! Another item that really caught my eye was the Bone Marrow (Roasted bone marrow, panko crust, toasted baguette, pâté - $19.00). A dish that I love but only come across seldomly. Now this was a dish that I certainly did not expect. But boy did I love it! Roasting the marrow topped with a crust of seasoned panko was inspired - a genius way to add texture (and more flavour) to an otherwise fairly gelatinous ingredient. Bread is such a huge component to Vietnamese cuisine (think bánh mì) because of the French colonization in the 1800s. The Viet people then proceeded to transform this bread into a completely new, localized culinary staple. The baguette at XO Bistro was absolute fresh, housemade(?) perfection. Crusty on the outside and chewy on the inside. I loved slathering the bread with ample amounts of delicious pâté (another "gift" from the French) and then topping it all off with spoonfuls of rich bone marrow. Each bite exemplified decadence and I reveled in it. This might very well have been the best bone marrow preparation that I've ever had. Vietnamese food might be one of the earlier examples of fusion cuisine, and while colonization sucks the food admittedly does not. XO Bistro provides everything that you know and love in terms of main dishes; from bánh mì to phở (there's even a "phở challenge" where if you eat an obscenely-sized bowl in 45 minutes you get a prize) to bún. I visited quite early during happy hour at around 6pm. The place was entirely empty except for staff which was slightly disheartening. But I'm sure this place is bustling during the lunch hours. Wait staff were slow to greet me so I sat myself and grabbed my own menus. The menu Is vast. A huge range of thai and vietnamese foods. From soups, sandwiches, grilled meats and stews. Looking through the menu was overwhelming but at least there is something for everyone. We decided on trying the chicken satays with peanut sauce. These were a famous item popular during the taste of edmonton. They did not disappoint. They charred them so nicely I could hear the fire crackling in the dead of winter. But the best part was the peanut sauce. They don't provide this during the taste of edmonton. But it brings the dish to new heights. I would say...stick to the grilled meats here. They don't disappoint. I throughly enjoyed my bun bo hue. It was authentic and tasty. It made my list for top 5 in edmonton for sure. Portion was perfect and the ratio of meats and noodles were just right. Another great dish. My only vice was that it was happy hour...advertised from 3-7pm. But the staff would not allow discounted prices despite it only being 6pm. They had decent options like wine, beer or a customized cocktail for $4. The server states happy hour is over despite it clearly stating it is until 7pm on the menu. I point to the board and he says it's full price. Whatever. I don't like misrepresentation on menus. And discrepancys are misleading. For this I minused a star. Service was haphazard. I seated myself. Got my own condiments and even got my own drinks. I had to go to the counter to order my food and pay at the register. All the server did was put the food on my table and clean it up afterwards. The whole process downgraded the whole modern vibe to more of a cafeteria style establishment. I felt jipped tipping bc i basically served myself. So minus another star. Overall. The food was great. Slightly overpriced. But the atmosphere reflects the price in the heart of downtown. Service was okay but the whole happy hour misrepresentation was a huge turnoff. I won't ever be buying drinks here in the future. Bc hey...they don't follow the advertised prices on the menu. It's decent. I would revisit if I am in the area. But it definetly won't be a go to place that I would drive to if I was hungry.

I was walking by and didn't have lunch but saw the sign for half price combos from 2-4PM. It was a…read morelittle after 2 so I went in to check it out. Inside there was just one table occupied but there is a decent amount of seating for the lunch time crowd. It seemed cleaned. The combos they offer are a rice or noodle (pad thai that didn't look very appetizing) and then up to 3 or 4 items. The food was under heat lamps so I could see what the options were. I decided to get the fried rice and a few items. I choose a chicken first and looked at the other items before deciding on the vegetables with cashews. The woman serving me had the rectangle take out container about 2/3 full and she kept suggesting food such as the green beans and then the sweet and sour pork. Both didn't look very appetizing. I think she was hoping I would pay for as much food to get rid of since the lunch time crowd had passed but she wasn't generous with the quantity. I decided on the beef skewer and then was done. At half price I paid $7.35. I brought the food home and heated it up. I liked the beef skewer but the rest of the food wasn't very good. The food tasted greasy and I had to use my fingers to eat the chicken was it had lots of bones. I'm not sure if it's from this food, but I didn't feel well after. Definitely would not pay $14 for the food I had as lots of other great restaurants around. It would probably be better to go during the lunch hour when the food is hot and fresh but I'll pass next time I'm in the area.
