We haven't been here for awhile. It is an Edmonton staple. All the food is great, so whatever you are in the mood for will be tasty. Focuses on Vietmanese food. It has a large menu selection. Try the spring rolls. They are lovely. This time our kiddo tried the 5 colour vermicelli, I tried the pho with meatballs and hubby did a rice plate. We also had the calamari and salad rolls. Everything came out hot and delicous. The calamari was probably my favourite. So crispy and flavourful. Everyone was inviting to eat. Service was good. Just know that they close early (8 with a last call at 7 at least the day we were there. Restaurant is clean and average. Parking is a pain. But well worth the effort for the food. read more

Golden Bird Restaurant - Vietnamese Near Me - Edmonton, Alberta

20 years now I've been eating here. Still the BEST spring rolls and calamari I've ever had! Regulars for us here will always be the sunshine dish, #44 (beef and spring rolls bun), strawberry milkshake, Vietnamese iced coffee (made with beans grown and roasted in Vietnam), spring rolls, and calamari. Honourable mentions to hot and sour soup as well as won ton noodle soup! Mmm.. Mmm... love me some Golden Bird! read more

For whatever reason, it has been ages since I have been to Golden Bird. I had the chance to go there this weekend when I was in Chinatown for an event. I ordered a bowl of pho with medium-well beef and brisket, and green onion cakes. The onion cakes were cut into convenient pieces and piled high on a plate with a generous side of sweet-and-sour dipping sauce. The soup was also a generous portion, with lots of meat and a broth that was satisfying and aromatic. The soup was much better than I remembered it. While the restaurant is small, it was clean and bright, and service was quite friendly. My server told me the story behind the restaurant, which has been in this location since 1985 opening as a family business, and had another owner before returning to the original family by 1990. I found it somewhat concerning that despite it being Saturday and the heart of the noon hour, I was the only customer in there, save for someone coming to pick up a phoned-in order. Restaurants in Chinatown used to be bumping on the weekend, but the area has had a lot of problems of late. Please take the time to support great, local, family-owned businesses like this - they deserve it! read more

When our convention bus was rolling down 97 Street NW, one of our locals exclaimed- "Oh look -Golden Bird is one of our favorites". She went on to say that her family has been going there for years and the food and service were outstanding. Well that was enough of a recommendation for us, because we walked over for lunch a few days later and by the time we walked out (stuffed to the gills) we had agreed that her enthusiasm for Golden Bird was fully justified. The menu is extraordinary- pages and pages of Chinese and Vietnamese choices, all very reasonably priced. We went with two soups and two appetizers. A small wonton soup was $3.50, a medium sized hot and sour soup was $8.45, an order of spring rolls was $7.50 and an order of calamari ran $14.95. Wow, wow, wow... was our food terrific. The wonton soup was a pretty big cup, and it was loaded with wontons, and all sorts of goodies. My Hot and Sour Soup was amazing. It was a huge bowl, and it wasn't even the biggest size they sold. It was jam-packed with tofu and pork and chicken and all sorts of tender vegetables. It was peppery and spicy and flavorful and about as good as I have ever had. The spring rolls was a generous order of three beauties, each with two good sized shrimp. And on to the calamari. It was wonderful. Fried to a very crispy breaded finish with zero greasiness or oiliness. They were tremendous. So what can we say? We loved everything about Golden Bird- from the complimentary tea, to the friendly service, to the fair pricing, to the wonderful food. We ate like royalty for $36. I can't recommend it highly enough. read more

We arrived with a table for 14. (plus 2 babies) We were served well and quickly. The food is amazing. It was too spicy for my Mom, but everyone else enjoyed it. We had Spring rolls and calamari to start. We added chicken satay (my favorite and I don't even like chicken) Beef and broccoli, ginger beef, beef and greens, shrimp and veg, pork/shrimp vermicelli bowl, hot pho. Maybe there was something else but we devoured it all so quickly. everyone had a beer and it came to $36 per person including gratuity. read more

Best deep fried springs in the city, hands down. Unfortunately, that's where it ends for me.

Came here for lunch on Monday with the family while visiting the Royal Alberta Museum which is really close by. Decor is like any other Vietnamese restaurant but it's the food that sets it apart. Wasn't too busy and we were seated right away. I ordered a well done beef with beef balls noodle soup to share with my son. Good size for an adult and child. Great broth and lots of meat. I think I will go with rare beef next time. It was too well done. Son slurped up the noodles. Wife ordered rare beef with tendons noodle soup to share with our daughter. That was better and they finished everything. We also stared with spring rolls and it was one of the best we have ever had. Staff were friendly and nice to the kids. Kids got a lollipop at the end which they enjoyed. Will definitely be back next time I visit the museum. read more

I wonder how many years it has been since the first time I stepped foot in Golden Bird? Twenty? Twenty five? All I know is it's been a long while and I was a lot younger back then. Not much has changed here, just a simple basic "not too fancy" Vietnamese restaurant serving up meals that are as delicious as I remember them as a young man. Golden Bird is one of those great "old stand by" spots I find myself at about once a year and wondering why it isn't more often (the answer to that is twofold... I am rarely in this neck of the woods, and I tend to gravitate to 97 Hot Pot when I am). This past visit I had the 5 Stars Vermicelli Bowl (the crispy spring roll in the bowl is AMAZING) and started with an order of Kim Chi (I find there's a bit sweeter than most places Kim Chi. It's different and I like it a lot... not sure I prefer it but it's tasty). Everything was tasty... I've never had a bad meal here. Their Vietnamese Coffee is worth a try as well. I didn't opt for it this past visit but I have had it many times and always loved that sweet concoction. A true long standing Edmonton gem! read more

I came here for lunch and this place doesn't disappoint. I ordered the four colour vermicelli and fried chicken, as well as a spicy noodle soup to go. The spring rolls were very tasty, unlike most restaurants Golden bird spring rolls have a different rice wrapping for this spring rolls and it makes it extra crunchy and tasty. I also ordered a lemon soda drink, which is really refreshing. It was busy around noon time but worth the visit. The price ranges from $11-15 for the majority of dishes. read more

Looking for the best pho.. We came here because we are always in search for the best pho or satay soup. That's exactly what we did and we would rate it decently, although not in the top ten, but will go again. The owner talked to us which was enjoyable and his love and energy for his restaurant was a pleasure to listen to. We tried the spring rolls and the verdict is they were not bad. This restaurant eating area was very clean as were the bathrooms. read more

Golden Bird was one of the first Vietnamese restaurants I visited many long years ago, but I relocated, returned, found other purveyors of noodles, and failed to again darken their door. Odd, since I am a regular patron at Another Vietnamese Restaurant, which is a wonton's throw away... Another Vietnamese Restaurant was closing for a family/staff vacation, and I was whining on social media that I would have to make my own pho. People constantly said, "Golden Bird." So tonight a Pal and I went to Golden Bird to see what the fuss was about. I had done some research ahead of time, and read a few reviews, and I was interested that these folks were riffing on a few things. I have never seen a Vietnamese restaurant with Calamari on the menu, or moreover as a crowd favourite. Sadly, my Pal is one of those Save the Cephalopod types, squid was off the menu. We opted for the legendary spring rolls as a starter, and we each ordered a bowl of pho. I went for Medium Rare Beef and Brisket and Pal went for the Satay Beef with Noodle. Our server was quick and efficient through the whole meal, in spite of an oxygen tank in a pack on his back. Tea was magically refreshed exactly as needed. Spring rolls arrived withing a few minutes of being ordered. These were like no spring roll I have seen before. They are big, plump and deep fried, with a rough, crispy shell. all the ingredients are screaming fresh, and the dipping sauce sublime. Four to an order, and for one person, they would constitute a meal in themselves. The big steaming bowls of goodness arrived while we were still climbing mount spring roll, but the smells in that steam made me abandon my assault on the summit. One of the thing I love about pho is how you get to customise your meal. The blending of the sauces, the bean sprouts, the mint leaves. Hoisin souce? Or no... Sriracha? Hipster trash! Another beauty of pho is the subtle differences between each broth, and when you get into these old family restaurants, you get broth recipes that can be generations old. That's what this beef broth tasted like. Beautifully balanced, clean, clear and delicious. The noodles were perfect, the beef and vegetables fresh and bright. My pal very much enjoyed his Satay Beef soup, and I got a couple of tastes as well. Very different from most Satay Soups I have had, but not in a bad way. Just different. Wonderful taste and a wicked, sneaky heat. The decor is basic. It is clean, very well maintained with colorful art. The service was excellent and the value superb. The portions were large and the prices are as good as any in Chinatown. I would say this may be the best value around. I will certainly be back to try some other items. Update: 12/19/2017 Stopped in again with the Pal to try some different items. Tonight I tried the Sunshine Dish, which was Grilled Chicken, Salad Rolls, Grilled Shrimp and the Legendary Calamari served over Vermicelli. (also available with rice.) Everything was simply superb. The chicken and the shrimp were perfectly cooked. Tender, succulent and delicious. The salad rolls were just right. Not too big, but delightfully fresh and delicious with a wonderful dipping sauce. The Calamari was everything that people had promised... The same rugged delicious breading that is found on the amazing spring rolls, but with a nice hint of spice and peppers, with lovely tender squid inside. In truth this is "Calamari" only because it is squid, deep fried in batter... it is like nothing I have ever tasted, but a rose by any other name... I fully understand why this is a crowd favourite, and I know I will order it again and again and that I will return here often. Bumped to the last star. I am officially a Birdhead. read more

Holy heckfire was I pleasantly surprised by this hole in the wall. Edmonton is a beautiful city but this spot is in the not so beautiful section. Still, I think it's highly worth a trip just for the food. Our party of 3 entered to an empty restaurant and we weren't even quite sure if they were open. A pleasant older gentleman of asian descent ushered us in with a smile and sat us. He came and brought us tea while we perused the menu. As I was being taken on my Edmontonian food tour, I followed with advice of my guides and got 5 stars over vermicelli which had shrimp, beef, chicken, pork and a fried spring roll over beautiful noodles. We began with some light spring rolls that were filled with pork and had a peanut dipping sauce. A beautiful start to the meal. The interior was crunchy and fresh. When my dish came, I was a bit shocked. The portion was hefty but not overly so and there really were 5 things on top. I poured the small delicious cup of sauce (soy, vinegar, fish) over the and mixed it all together. I then proceeded to devour. The shrimp were grilled beautifully and nicely spiced. The beef and pork were also sliced thin, marinated and cooked to perfection. Each portion of this dish just rocked my tastebuds. I left happy and satisfied. I'm glad I had the chance to eat here because I would probably make it part of my weekend routine along with a trip to the asian market down the street for supplies. read more

Spring Rolls! Need I say more? Okay, I will. Golden Bird has the greatest Spring Rolls you have ever had in your life. If you don't care for them, you clearly have some sort of brain damage. Their vermicelli bowls are second to none. And they have the most amazing Hot & Sour soup that has ever melted your face off. I have frequented Golden Bird literally dozens of times and have yet to have a negative experience. The staff of this fine establishment treat you like family even if you are too much of a jerk to deserve it. I suggest to anybody who likes Vietnamese cuisine, in anyway shape or form, to try the delicacies at Golden Bird. If then, you still don't like it, you'll have to answer to me. read more

What do 4 people do to satisfy their hunger...they consult with each other in tryng to find out where to eat. We came to conclusion of trying the Golden Bird Restaurant...Vietnamese food...I love pho...pho pho pho! Lets start with the location, in Edmonton's Chinatown district. Parking is very tricky, lets just say the 4 of us went through an alley. Can we say this is starting so great... So we made it into this restaurant and we got seated. So we were craving a variety of things, the main dishes we shared was the salad rolls and the spring rolls. So pretty usual things to order from a Vietnamese restaurant. The server brought in the sauces and the spring rolls, your usual vinegar and fish sauce and sugar garnished with carrots followed by this faded light brown peanut sauce with peanut chunkies and a dallop of red hot sauce on top...let me tell you it did not look appetizing and plus the remarks we were saying about it being in a white porcelain bowl, you connect the 2 together...LOL. None the less we did recieve our appetizers. Tasting the peanut sauce was like tasting a really old peanut butter...it had that old taste, not fresh. Yah, lets move on. My lil sister ordered the Golden Bird Beef Bowl, what I ordered was apparently the smaller bowl version of that, it was 20 cents less, I didn't see a difference in size when it came out. The soup was good, hot, the meat seemed like it was pre cooked, usually i prefer the hot broth to cook the raw meat. So the meat was kinda chewy. Rikki ordered some sort of steak with eggs on rice...that looked really good and Roger ordered some 4 colored special, pretty much 4 different types of meat on a bed of rice noodles. Myself i dunno if I would go to this place again. There are other places that taste better and cheaper prices. Hehehe...plus better looking peanut sauces...Mwahahaha read more

I've been going here since my brother and his lovely wife introduced me to this gem about 6 years ago. Don't let the décor fool you (although they have updated), this is the best Vietnamese food I have had ... bar none.... every time. The family is a big plus too, very friendly and respectful. If they seem dismissive, it is only because they are very busy and somewhat shy, just talk to them and they are lovely! We had take out today, spring rolls and Hot and Sour soup, to remedy the flu that is going around. The soup is heavenly, the spring rolls awesome and the portions are more than you could ever need. Keep it up Golden Bird, I wish lived closer!! 6 stars out of 5!!! read more

Quiet place. We arrived at 8:0pm on Saturday.. Sooooo... that's normally not a good sign. The place is clean at first inspection. Nothing wow-ed is but it did have a very nice lemongrass aroma when we walked in. Very full menu of lots of options. You just need it invest a little time going through it. The spring rolls were a bit different because of the outer coat. They were nice. I did a noodle Bin 5 colours, there was a crispy beef inside the dish that was OMG this is good. Nothing great to say or nothing bad. I can say, I was just under-whelmed read more

Came here a few times with friends after being introduced to this restaurant during the Red Bull crushed ice event. Loved the food here and the prices WERE very competitive with other Vietnamese restaurants downtown. The portions are on the bigger side however the last time I came in (bottom of August), I noticed they had increased the price of their entire menu (new prices stuck over the old ones). Smaller items increased a buck or two though their variety bowls such as the 5 colour over vermicelli increased 3 or 4 bucks if I remember correctly. I will probably frequent golden bird less now but still a decent pho place with higher prices. read more

Came into get some Vietnamese food on a Saturday afternoon. It wasn't busy at all so the service was quick and friendly. By no means is this place fancy but it does the job. The meat on our dishes was fresh and perfectly grilled with just the right amount of crispness which is always appreciated. The portions were also fair. All in all, no complaints regarding food or service. I will say that the washroom seemed to be recently renovated. It was more updated than the restaurant itself and for an Asian place, pretty clean. read more

Golden Bird is just an alright restaurant. They serve Vietnamese food but it was just alright. The food didn't taste extremely fresh and the service was a bit slow. Some years ago my wife and I came by the Golden Bird via word of mouth. Everytime I visit the food is consistently excellent. We always order the four color or five star mix plate. Additionally we get extra spring rolls and Vietnamese coffee to finish our meal. Thier wonton soup is also the best I've ever tasted too. These spring rolls are widely known around Edmonton as the best in town. Period. It's a hole in the wall joint that can not be missed. We usually go twice a year for celebration events. read more

This is my favourite place to go for Vietnamese "comfort food" in Edmonton. Food is always hot and fresh. It's a little different than other places; they've got their own spin on things.. Their ginger beef is crispy - to the point where someone could mistake it for overcooked, but it's not; it's delicious if you like your food crispy. The bbq chicken makes me drool - I've never had chicken quite as good anywhere else. I've been coming here for 10 years (at least) and I always get the four stars on vermicelli noodles. It's amazing to go somewhere and know exactly what it's going to taste like every time. My father has dietary restrictions and they're always happy to accommodate him as needed. My boyfriend and I have put this place on our 'go-to' list when we can't decide what to eat. It's fast, friendly and always good. Try the spring rolls; they can't be beat. read more

Maybe I just came at the wrong time or on the wrong day. I had read on Yelp how great this restaurant was so I came downtown to try it out. i got a little lost looking for it but spotted it on 97th and found some parking about a block away. I went in the late afternoon and the place was empty. Two servers were on hand. I sat down and was handed a menu. I was in the mood for a vermicelli bowl and wanted to try the world famous salad rolls that everyone was raving about. More than I needed but if I was coming I was going to come and try it all. I knew I was in trouble when I could hear the kitchen staff leaving the kitchen on what appeared to be a break. My order was placed and my server went back to the kitchen and was there for several minutes. I could hear the microwave opening and closing, turning on, opening again. I cannot guarantee that my meal was what they were warming up over and over but I did not hear very much sizzling or anything else aside from the microwave. Coincidently when I stopped hearing the microwave is when my meal came out. It looked passable but rough around the edges. The peanut sauce was thicker than I'm used to. It was quite chunky giving it a slightly unappealing appearance. As I bit into the shrimp they were dry and stuck to the skewer. The meat was better but still dry. Nothing tasted fresh nor all that good. I tried the salad rolls and sadly they too were sub-par. As I was finishing my meal I could hear the kitchen staff returning. Really bad timing. I doubt I will be back. I can think of so many other places right in this area that I would prefer. I would consider trying it again only if I was with someone that wanted to go specifically to this restaurant. Even then... we'll see. read more

There's simply no restaurant I'd rather support than Golden Bird. It's not the "fancy-date-night-out" kind of place aiming to impress people with elegant decor or impeccably formal waitstaff - it's more like going to a relaxed family dinner at Mom's house (if your Mom happens to be a great cook!). It's a little table crowded, a little noisy when busy, very casual, very friendly (if you visit regularly, you'll indeed be welcomed like family) and VERY delicious. There's plenty of variety on the menu, and so far I've enjoyed everything. Just thinking about them has me craving their calamari and spring rolls - time for another visit! It makes me happy to eat there, and I can't think of a truer compliment to them. read more

By far the best place to go for vermicelli bowls. Been coming here for over a decade. 10/10 would recommend.

I've been meaning to try more restaurants in Chinatown, so I was looking forward to trying out Golden Bird after a coworker recommended the place for lunch. The restaurant was a quick walk from work, and even though we arrived before noon, there was plenty of seating available. I ordered the 4 Colors on Rice, which included grilled chicken, 4 skewered prawns, 1 Vietnamese spring roll, and crispy beef. The portions were good (I had leftovers) and the food was tasty. The crispy beef was a bit odd. It's deep fried to the point where you wonder whether they left it in for too long, but it adds an interesting texture to the dish, and after awhile I started to enjoy it. It probably isn't for everyone though, as I know other people who left all their ginger beef untouched. The fish sauce that accompanies the rice/vermicelli bowls is rather weak sauce though. ha-ha... But no seriously, it's significantly more watered down than what I'm used to. I think a stronger fish sauce flavor would have made the dish better. 8 of us were seated at the round table closest to the cashier. I was a bit skeptical because the table looked rather small, and although it was a big snug, we managed to squeeze in. I think they could have at least offered to put some tables together to make it comfortable. The owners were quite friendly and they both brought the food to our table and cleared dishes out. By the time we were paying our bills (about quarter to 1), I noticed the restaurant was nearly full. The menu is rather extensive and the restaurant appeared clean. One thing I didn't like about Golden Bird is how they use the green Palmolive soap in their washrooms as hand soap. It's rather gross, how hard would it be to buy a bulk bottle of hand soap at Costco? All in all I'd definitely come back to try more menu items. read more

By far the best Vietnamese restaurant in the city. The flavours are delicious and the ingredients are authentic, unlike a lot Vietnamese restaurants whose flavours resemble that of generic Asian food-court. I've tried 90% of the menu in the 19 years I've been going there. Their Calamari can't be beat. Their curry chicken is spectacular. Ditto with their satays and lemon-grass dishes (chicken or beef). And of course you can't leave without trying the Ginger Chicken (the kids call it candy chicken). Price is spot on for their portion sizes and quality of ingredients. My only complain would be timing. Sometimes in large groups, the table gets a little crowded with food coming all at one when you are sharing. But other might want it all at once so minor detail. read more
