Just visited here with a girlfriend before a play downtown. I love XO bistro because if you are downtown and want a nice dinner before a play or event, you won't be paying an arm and leg for it. Also, they are quick. So if you need to leave for a concert or something they have your back. It is modern inside and comfortable. And not completely dated like most of the Vietnamanese places that I frequent. Food there is still good, but this place invites you to stay for drinks and linger which most places do not Menu is fairly typical but with a few added bonus items like bone marrow. Mostly though it is the typical appetizers/pho/ vermicelli bowls. Our server was kind and prompt. We recieved our food in a timely manner. My friend decided on the vermicelli bowl. i went with the shrimp salad rolls and the tofu bun bo hue. My friend was really happy with her dish. I enjoyed mine especially since I could swap my regular noodles for zucchini one with an added fee. Pho was tasty and warm with the perfect amount of spice. The salad rolls were fresh enough but lacked flavour. They needed Thai basil or something. I also ordered a cocktail which was refreshing. Pretty trendy spot, giant ass fake blossom tree right in the middle but it still feels modern and cool. We started with green onion cakes and something there was no way I was getting outta there without trying Ox tail poutine. The cakes were tasty, I dunno if it was anything special but very tasty. The poutine was incredible, like an Asian riff on the Canadian delicacy. It was topped with a fried egg which was also amazing. Honestly if they didn't say it was ox tail in the gravy I never woulda known but exceptionally good. We both had the typical vermicelli bowls as one does, and they were just perfect. Amazing grilled pork and beef, full of flavour. The spring roll it came with...came from heaven. The innovative menu is simple and offers a wide range of authentic Vietnamese food with a modern twist. A unique offering that is a first in Edmonton's Vietnamese dining scene. Okay: I eat Vietnamese food all the time, like several times a week but the menu here is truly unrivaled. Many of the dishes are not made anywhere else in Edmonton. And i have only tried these labour intensive dishes when my friends parents made them at home. But now I can enjoy them anytime! A few dishes that stood out to me on the menu were exactly what I ordered. I was thrilled to see the viet crepe on the menu as I have had a hankering for months for them and I only have had them homemade for me. I have never ever seen them on a menu. And I have to say the dish is "da bomb". A tad simpler than I have had in the past but tasty to the last bite. The dish portions are large for the price. Each dish easily shareable for 2-3 people all for under $10. And that's unheard of in edmonton's downtown core. There is an assortment of grilled skewers which all were fabulously tasty. Pork cheeks, beef, chicken, shrimp or beta leaf skewers freshly charred. Despite the march muckiness outside I reminisced of summer barbacues in the sun. The pork cheeks and chicken skewers were my personal favourites. There is an extensive drink menu and they have daily specials. The apple soju was delicious and perfect with the meal. But another surprising thing on the menu that I have never seen before is the vietnamese egg coffee. Oh dear god...if you like vietnamese coffee then you will love this drink. It's not a typical vietnamese drip coffee. It has an egg mixed in which adds a creamy texture which tones the sweetness down. It was the best vietnamese coffee I have had in edmonton. Hands down. I truly love how they do the work and mix it up for you too. I swear I might just have to do a coffee run here during my lunch hour. Stopped by for happy hour one cold afternoon for some hot soup. The bun bo hue piqued my interest so we got that,wings and a dragon mojito and guava gimlet. The dragon mojito was alright, it was pretty light flavored and I couldn't tast much, however the guava drink was pretty tasty. The happy hour wings are super worth it, for 5 bucks its 6 wings. Super crispy outside with a couple sauce selections, we were happy with our peanut satay flavor. The BBH (bun bo hue) is kind of like pho with a slightly spicier broth with an udon like noodle. I visited here during their All You Can Eat Pho promo for their third anniversary recently. It was not too busy when we came around 6pm on a Friday night. Service was friendly and welcoming. For their promo, it was all you can eat pho for $18.99. We could order any type of regular pho and eat as much as we want. My partner and I ordered "The Works" pho which included a wide variety of meat inside rather than just one type. The pho was pretty good and I had no complaints. Broth is comparable to other pho places. I was full after two bowls so I only saved around $6 with the promo. I wouldn't say this is the best pho place in the city. There are better places that have bigger portions for a lower price in Edmonton. I love that it's connected to Gongcha so people can order bubble tea while enjoying their meal here too. read more

Came here initially with the plan to perhaps try the pho challenge, otherwise XO seemed too "white-washed" for my liking, especially with entering the space and seeing a huge picture of The Weeknd up on the wall. Anyway, my friend chickened out of the challange, and where's the fun in stuffing your face all by yourself? We each ordered a small bowl of pho. Tastes great, nice broth, nice fatty beef (my fave), pretty generous with the meat, although my friend's bowl seemed like they skimped a bit; my only caveat is that it's pretty pricey for a bowl of pho, but I guess that's what happens when you're right downtown. Menu is pretty expansive, not just pho and vermicelli. You can also have BBT from the bubble tea joint upstairs (your order is brought down into the restaurant via a pulley! Cool!) Not a fan of how non-descript the bubble tea menu is, and the fact that the staff aren't able to answer any questions about it either. Don't serve the product if you can't tell me what's in it. I guess if I'm in this part of of downtown and craving pho, I'd come here again, otherwise I'd probably hit up Chinatown for pho that's just as good and cheaper. read more

I've been here a half dozen times or so now in the last two years. XO Bistro + Bar is a great pit stop for dinner before an Oilers game or show at Rogers Place. There is no free parking here - FYI. The decor is modern and there is a bubble tea shoppe upstairs that you can order from and have delivered to you downstairs on a dumbwaiter. The signs in the washroom make me smile and giggle overtime we visit. They have happy hour and game night specials here. On our recent visits, the Oxtail poutine were on the specials and did not disappoint. The gravy, the gooey egg... Hmmm... drooling like Homer thinking of a donut, so good! And I think the last cocktail I had here was the Good Morning Vietnam - also a winner winner chicken dinner! The salad rolls here are also decent with a little crunch inside. The vermicelli bowls here are okay but I'm a total head over heels snob who only has eyes for Golden Bird when it comes to Vermicelli bowls. Hubs likes the Pho here and gave it two thumbs up. The bone marrow here is delicious and oh so good on a cold winter's night. The sizzling udon noodles with tofu were a pleasant surprise! We always enjoy udon noodles but this was a new variation for us(and I recommend you stir in some hot sauce). At night, this place turns into a bit of a club. It's kiddo friendly until about 10pm but I'd mostly have my littles out of here around 8pm or so. They have big screen televisions to watch the game here as well. Had a great visit to XO Bistro and Bar last night. The space is interesting. open and bright. Our server was friendly and prompt. The food was unique and the portions generous. The green onion cake was my favorite. Chewy and filling. The calamari pieces were huge and there were some onion and jalapeños battered as well. We had the fish sauce wings. Not as flavorful as I expected but very crispy which I liked. The papaya salad was also different. Not as hot, and included strips of beef jerky. I really liked that one. I've been reading the reviews of this place for a while so when a friend asked if I fancied going for lunch today, there was only one place on my mind. The layout is cool with a trendy vibe. During the day it's pretty relaxed but I heard this place is pretty happening at the weekend. They have daily drink specials and they were advertising a liquid tiramisu drink. My friend ordered that and let me try it. They combine egg, vanilla and condensed milk to make a frothy sugary topping for Vietnamese coffee. It's pretty special but takes time to make so expect your food to arrive before it. I went for the ordinary Vietnamese Coffee, because I can never resist that! We both ordered a Vermicelli Bowl, I went for chicken and tofu as recommended by the server (who was very sweet and attentive). The manager came over to check on us at one point too. Honestly, I couldn't fault it, lovely crispy tofu, fresh veggies, tasty chicken and super slurpy noodles. I thought the bowl was small at first but it's deep and full of all that goodness. It was the perfect amount of food, allowing me to save room for a bubble tea. XO shares the premises with Gong Cha, they are on the mezzanine upstairs. Don't worry, you don't need to walk up the stairs! You can order a bubble tea from your table and it will be placed in a basket and shimmied down. I've never been to Viet Nam, but the hunnybunny has, so this review is an amalgam of both our tastebuds and her stories :-) We visited the XO Bistro + Bar on the way to an event at near-by Rogers Place; this is an convenient and worthwhile destination. Don't short-change yourself by not leaving enough time; rushing is failure. There's a lot to love here. The XO Platter (a sampler) started out our taste travel, then a Viet Crepé, and a baked marrow plate. All good, all tasty, and satisfying. Then the calamari (which I'd resisted getting because, really, it's been done, everywhere). I was wrong. The calamari were crispy, flavorful, and not oily at all. I've heard a frequent stereotyping of Asian foods as slap-dash sub-gourmet rushed preparation affairs, perhaps because so much of it is delivered to-go, and not many foods can stand up to the rigors of being tossed into a small container, suffering condensation and cooling, and reheating. Each dish we had tonight had its own subtle flavorings, fresh herbs and treatments, and stood on it's own merits. WARNING: the spice on the Viet beef tataki is fiery -- if you don't like the burn of capsicum then steer far away! We tried a couple of cocktails, mango or peach comes to mind, and they were damn good. Better even were the Vietnamese Coffee, with sweetened condensed milk. Everything you could ever ask for...if you're a chronic "vermicelli bowl to go" gourmande like me. XO is just down the street from my office and gym, so often I order takeout through Skip The Dishes while I workout on my lunch hour. My meal is always ready by the time I get there, and by using STD (oooh, that's an awkward abbreviation...), I skip the hassle of paying for it in person. My meal is also always hot and fresh, and it never tastes as if it has been sitting there for a long time. That's just the convenience factor. Coming from the gym generally makes me more conscious of my food choices, and I was blown away to learn that XO makes vermicelli bowls with zucchini noodles...bringing a meal that easily hits 500+ calories to around 300+ calories, and higher protein count. I've tried both and the zucchini noodles are never mushy, and always seem freshly spiralized. They've now become my go-to! Along with the pickled carrot, the freshness XO delivers for a quick lunchtime meal is out of this world! Last but not least, I always avoid spring rolls because of gluten...but the last time I went in, the server informed that XO actually makes gluten-free spring rolls. With the inspiration of a classic dish called Bun Bo Hue, this was the start of a fantastic dining establishment. The menu has a Vietnamese style comfort food with a modern fusion twist. XO Bistro is more of a Tapas style bar but still has a full menu to accommodate the more hungrier customers. The lunch menu would feature more of the full size menu such as Pho, Vermicelli, and rice bowls. Today with the help of our wonderful server we decided on Vegan salad rolls and Oxtail fries to start. My sister ordered the Vegan Pho and I had the Vegan Vermicelli bowl. Our Good morning Vietnam cocktails arrived and it was pure eye candy. The deep red from the bottom to the white opaque top, finished with a pretty garnish of citrus, lychee, and mint. Once mixed we took a sip and it was an amazing! I think I found my favorite drink... It took a bit of will power to not guzzle the entire drink immediately. Our food came out hot and fast. The Oxtail fries had a generous rich beef taste and topped off with a fried egg (fried egg on any dish is good). The vegetarian salad rolls had eggs with a crunchy element that made the dish ever more delightful. My sister Loved her Vegan Pho and inhaled it instantly. My Vegan Vermicelli bowl was enormous! The fried tofu had a crispy seasoned coating which made the dish and the fresh vegetables with the vermicelli noodles were a wonderful compliment. Trying a few more cocktails we had the Guava Gimlet, Dragon Mojito, and Emperor Kaffir Mule. All were absolutely incredible! If you only came here for the drinks it would definitely Not disappoint. The Cocktails suited the Vibe of the atmosphere and Menu. We ended the meal with fried bananas and Vietnamese coffee ice cream. The fried bananas were delightfully crispy on the outside with a sweet soft banana oozy middle. The Vietnamese coffee ice cream was to die for... I have wanted to go to XO for a while. I finally was able to go for lunch and I loved it. The decor is modern and relaxing. The menu has great options to fit you craving for delicious Vietnamese cuisine. Our server was prompt and attentive which was appreciative. She had a good grasp of the menu and was able to give really good suggestions. I ordered a beef vermicelli bowl. It was plentiful and delicious. My friend ordered the pho. He raves about the flavour. The portions on each were generous. They have two types of spring rolls (pork or vegetable) with different options for the wrap (regular or rice paper). We ordered pork spring rolls with both regular and rice paper wrap. They were both crispy and very delicious. Overall, XO is a comfortable and modern take on classic Vietnamese dishes. Hunny and I came here having no idea what to expect. First of all, the location is perfect, especially if you are going to an event at Rogers Place. This is one of the best priced places in the area and the quality is spot on. I was really impressed by the flavors of their drinks and their food. The fact that their food used high quality fresh herbs made all the difference in the world. The subtle but powerful touches like adding mint to the crepe dish (which was by far my very favorite even though it was hard to hold) and putting a Vietnamese bill under the Moscow Mule drink, were creative and complete. My hunny went absolutely crazy over the coffee. He was on number 4 when I finally had to get one to understand what all the fuss was about. OMG. Seriously? I would main line this stuff. Wow. The staff are quite sweet and accomodating. My one suggestion was warning people about the spice of the peppers on the raw beef dish. It really shocked my tastebuds and did color the rest of the food. I would def come here again, especially on the way to a special event at Rogers Place. The atmosphere is classy and trendy. XO first stuck me as a club scene but really it's a cool laid back place to go have some great food. I ordered the papaya salad to start with ($9) and the beef stew with baguette ($13). My overall experience was a great one! My shrimp vermicelli bowl was absolutely delicious, filled with fresh veggies and seasoned shrimp. My favourite part of a vermicelli bowl is the bottom! You reach all the flavours at once and the sauce included in the bowl is so good I could just drink it! When I got their around lunch time it was very busy and I had to sit at the bar which was all good. Everything was very clean and kept. My one disapproval would be that while I stood at the front door waiting to be seated, the waitresses walked past without saying "hello" or "I'll be right with you" so I felt a tad ignored. read more

I'd never had Bone Marrow before and I'm soo glad I ordered it. It tastes like.. meaty butter?! SO good. The Pho was very flavourful and it did taste a little bit heartier than authentic pho, which was totally fine with me because I always prefer a more flavourful broth. I decided to check this place out for my monthly get together with my friend. I really liked that the menu included vegan options and a nice variety of options for everyone else. On the west side of the street it's easy to miss. There is definitely an opportunity to do something about the visability here. Once inside it was a cool and comfortable space. The tables and chairs were tall which isn't my favorite thing but these were comfortable. The windows are tinted to keep the place from being to bright. The waitress was reserved and polite. We received our menus and ordered our food. I had the vegan spring rolls and pho. I'm thrilled that this is the third place I've found that offers a vegan pho. The spring rolls were different than anything I've had before. The wrapping was thin and translucent and the filling was dense and savoury. They were piping hot and needed some time to cool. I really enjoyed this starter. My friend's green onion cakes looked amazing. The pho came and was perfect. It was savoury with delicious deep fried tofu. The manager came out to ask us how we heard about the place, what we liked and how our meal was going. This is a great spot for a business lunch, workday meal or drinks and appetizers. We got: 2 skewers - one beef, one chicken, extra spicy; papaya salad, and shake in beef with an egg. And wow...the skewers were flavorful (although a little pricey at 2.75$ each), the papaya salad was fresh and spicy, and the beef....it was served with potato pancakes, and like I said we added a fried egg. Honestly, I'm already dreaming of when I'll get to eat it again. They had vegan pho, and I didn't look closely, but I'm sure they have other vegan options that would be worth checking out. read more

Eating here with a large group gave us the opportunity to try many things on the menu! Calamari--lightly battered and tasted good with the spicy mayo dipping sauce that was provided The Oxtail Fries--a fried egg and oxtail gravy provided lots of flavor for these fries. Baked Marrow--this unique dish; baked marrow was flavored with sea salt, garlic and bread crumbs that you can spread on toasted bread. Viet Crepe--3 types available: shrimp, beef and chicken. We tried the shrimp and beef; the flavored fish sauce added great flavor. This was my favorite of everything I ate! Spring Rolls--3 types to choose from--pork, shrimp and veggie. We tried them all, in addition we tried the rice paper version and those were just as good. Skewers--we had chicken and beef skewers; they all had great flavor and dipping sauce Salad Rolls--there were 4 types to choose from; Chicken, Beef, Pork and Shrimp. I have never had meat spring rolls before, but with the meat having the right seasoning, these salad rolls are just as good Shake it Beef Cubes--nice flavor and tender beef cubes that come with potato pancakes After sampling everything, we were all so full that we did not have the opportunity to try the Pho or Vermicelli bowl. If you like dancing and Vietnamese noodle soup come to this spot. You might run into the Weeknd. This is a good example of what a "supper club" is.. supper during the day, club at night. XO is centrally located on 103rd street downtown just outside of City Centre mall and about a block away from Roger Place. The menu is very extensive and lends itself to a premium Vietnamese restaurant. This place isn't dirty. They have granite counter tops and pleather chairs. Mother fuckin' pleather chairs in an Asian restaurant. I mean, I think this is a place where the producers of "Crazy Rich Asians" would choose to film a stupid dinner or lunch scene. In addition to the furniture, you pay a premium to eat here. A bowl of loaded pho is $15 before tax and tip. But it's decent soup, not the best but it's full and rich of flavour. I don't know if you guys want me to talk more about the food, it's just regular Vietnamese food. The problem is, there's not a lot of competition around the area so if you have a hankering for some Asian persuasion, come here. But pick your times correctly so that you don't get Hennessy spilled in your soup. 4/5. read more

This restaurant is a hidden gem close to Rogers Place. We were there for Valentine's Day before The Cirque du Soleil event at Rogers Place and couldn't believe they weren't busier! The food was amazing and pricing was excellent, especially since we took advantage of their happy hour drink specials ($5 wine and beer) and daily $5 special too (Thursday is $5 Papaya Salad day). We ordered 5 different dishes to share between two big eaters and probably could have done with ordering only 4 to make a satisfying meal. Our favourites were the Papaya Salad which we had with beef and the Bahn Mi sub. The calamari was great and pho beef dip sandwich was good. The tacos we had were a bit greasy, but had a good flavour all the same. All of the food came out quickly and the service was excellent. The decor is modern and little cold feeling. Vietnamese is one of my favorites! We happened upon this place just looking for somewhere to have a late lunch. So glad we did! I had the beef vermicelli noodle bowl; which is what I always get at every Vietnamese restaurant. I can safely say this was one of the best ones I have had yet! The spring roll that came with the meal was most definitely the best I have had. Usually you get at least one piece of beef that is a little chewy, a little fatty; not this bowl!!!! Not one chewy piece! Fantastic! My boyfriend had the ox tail BBN soup. A little spicier than the regular Pho, but not overpowering at all. Flavor was great! Noodles were not "wormy" for large soup noodles. Meat was very flavorful. Very great dish. And so filling he had to bring half of it home! :D We also had the shrimp salad rolls. They were good, with an extra crispy thing right in the center. The extra crisp set them apart from the usual salad rolls. As well, the peanut sauce was super fantastic. Nice and thick, with bits of peanut on top. You could taste that it was actually made from ground up peanuts!!!! Best peanut sauce yet! An added bonus; there is a tea house on the upper level, that services the restaurant. I had the honey green tea, medium sweet. It was the perfect sweetness, and you still had a good strong green tea flavor (which I very much enjoy). Next time I will definitely try the bubble tea! Overall, you pay slightly (very slightly) more than you would at another restaurant, but it is well worth every penny! Highly recommend :) read more
