Loveeee this place! Wayyyy more than the overrated Pho tau Bay! Chatted with the owner, it's a husband and wife business! They make everything themselves and they specialize in duck congee duck pho etc. Will def try that next visit! There isn't too many good places where I'm staying when I'm in town. Vietnamese is always the best option! You can't go wrong with a big bowl of hot Pho! I got a slightly modified #22 rare beef with beef balls with added tendon. pho tai bay would never modify it! I love how this place has the classics as well as great bun options! Looking forward to coming back next time I'm in town already!!

Rare beef salad, tapioca dumplings and spring rolls

Came here during chinatown dining week. We got to try their tapioca dumplings (filled with shrimp+pork) which as chewy and delicious! Their homemade spring Rolls and their rare beef salad. It wasn't too tangy so it was a nice balance. The combo came with the rare beef pho which was a nice way to end the meal. The soup was a bit heavy on sodium but tea washed it down. The owner said he would extend the combos indefinitely!

This is a great spot directly in China Town, the food and service fantastic! The pho broth is really good, as it has a great balance of different aromatics all blending together in harmony, resulting in a complex light broth. The tapioca dumplings were also quite good, and one of the few places in the city that serves a really good wrapper for it.

    Seafood Noodle Soup with tea

Had a craving for Vietnamese soup while I was in Edmonton. Saw the Xu Hue Vietnamese Restaurant and decided to have some noodle soup. Took a chance on the seafood noodle soup and was disappointed. Their large size is a regular size portion and expensive for the portion ($14.95). I'm not too sure why it has a 'cheap' rating because it isn't. The broth was a little brand, the noodles were overcooked to the point where they are mushy when you bite into them. Comes with fish balls which is a surprise compared to other vietnamese noodle soup restaurants. Otherwise the 3 shrimp were ok and the calamari was fine. The green tea was light, not served individually with either the tea leaves or tea pouch, already comes steeped. It tasted a little bland as well. Not too sure about the other things on the menu but stay away from the overpriced, tasteless seafood noodle soup.

This is my second time here and I had soup twice as the soup is delicious and hot! I totally recommend their soups and pho here. Staff were friendly and welcoming, the place is clean and service is quick. I recommend going before lunch noon or after lunch as it tends to get super busy.

Update 7/29/15: Have been here a few more times but it seems like I'm always craving bun bo hue, so I have yet to try anything else from the extensive menu. I really like the meats in the bun bo hue - some peppercorn-spiked meatloaf slices, brisket-style beef, and also some cartilage-y pieces which I think might be pork hock. Also note that if the bun bo hue isn't spicy enough for you, they keep a jar of that spicy oil on each table. It is, in fact, the same stuff that the bowl comes out with (unlike at Trang Tien). ---- I wanted to try out this place after finding out that they have a duck and bamboo noodle soup (two things that I love), and also reading that they have a great bun bo hue. The husband and I went for a late lunch (probably 2pm) on a recent Saturday. The owner greeted us and attended to us promptly, though strangely, the service dropped after that - our orders took a while to come out, and one of them was wrong. Not a big deal since we weren't in a rush, but there was only one other couple there, so not sure why things were taking so long. Anyway, as a starter we got the deep-fried quails. Sorry no photo - they were so delicious that I totally forgot to take one. You get two quails, each cut up into quarters and deep fried. They were lightly seasoned with salt and I think that was it - simple, perfect. We were also given two dipping sauces: a sweet fish sauce (yum), and a savoury red spicy ginger sauce (also yum). I had the bamboo duck noodle soup, which had thin rice vermicelli, many slices of poached duck breast (bone-in), and slices of bamboo shoots. I think they were fresh bamboo shoots - they were tasty but with a very strong flavour - different from the canned stuff I've had. The broth was nice and light though I would have liked more broth and less noodles. Same for my husband's large bun bo hue - way too many noodles for the amount of broth. I tried a little bit of the broth and I quite liked it - the lemongrass flavour is prominent, which is the way I think it's supposed to be! I also liked that they had, among many other condiments on the table, a jar of the spicy chili oil that goes in bun bo hue. They do accept Visa which was nice. Price-wise, I thought it was a set at a reasonable price point. They have a very extensive menu, with what looked like traditional dishes as well as Vietnamese takes on Chinese classics, so I would definitely come back to try other stuff!

Being such a nice and genuinely awesome guy, I'm starting this review by looking out for you. How so? Well, if you were planning to, for example, go to Xu Hue on a Wednesday, you would be in for major disappointment (like a certain someone that tried to go during supper time). Yep, they are only open from 11am to 4pm so you've been warned! The following week, I went to Xu Hue on a Tuesday evening for dinner with three friends and this time, they were open for business. The place is your typical Asian restaurant - hard seats, white walls, TV (U.S. Open on - win!) and random Asian decorations. I'm pretty sure if the seats are hard and uncomfortable, you know the food will be good. Just a tip I've picked up over the years. A good Viet buddy of mine recommended Xu Hue as they are known for having several local/regional dishes that are hard to find in other Edmonton Vietnamese restaurants. So, with that, we decided to order a couple appetizers to share: - Green onion cakes ($4.50 for two) - these were surprisingly delicious. Add some of their chili hot sauce to it (which was also awesome - definitely had some good heat to it). We devoured these like they were going out of style. - Banh xeo ($6.95) - apparently these pan fried Vietnamese crepes are super hard to find in town. Comes with a side of lettuce and fresh basil. It was very crunchy and the inside consisted of bean sprouts, shrimp and sliced pork. Also came with a fish sauce to dip with. I was expecting the banh xeo to be delicious but we all concluded it was very average. Not bland but just very ordinary. - 2x Bun bo hue (spicy) ($9.95) - two friends ordered this and it looked/smelled delicious. They both were big fans. - Five colour vermicelli ($10.95) - spring rolls, pork, shrimp, beef and chicken. - Fish sauce noodle soup (spicy) ($9.95 large) - I ordered this dish. The broth was on the sweeter side compared to other pho places. As well, the broth tasted much more subtle, almost cleaner if that makes sense. I overheard the owner saying that there is no MSG in it, which I like. I also really liked the noodles - they were different from the normal rice noodles you get. Yum. Solid pho place in Chinatown with a lot of interesting/different dishes on their menu. To quote Tom Haverford, "Treat yo' self".

I can tell that the kids come here after school to do there homework as they watch there parents work at the restaurant. There is a corner with a table and a shelf of toys for the kids to hang out and play. The décor of this place is not the most attractive. It's tacky pin ups, old school Asian art and worn down fixtures and furniture brings a lazy feel. Which means I can come here and be laid back and feel like I'm eating at home. I enjoy an environment that feels like family together sharing food and Xu Hue represents just that. I've always admired that kind of closeness that the Vietnamese culture brings. Though I don't speak there language, but I can tell that these people work really hard to provide for there family. They are readily here to serve you and also to make substitutes if you need, so you would have an enjoyable meal. This is one of the ways they show kindness, even though you may not get the Western culture customer service. Xu Hue brings more of an authentic approach to Vietnamese food, because they are from Northern Vietnam. They bring out your food fast and it's cooked properly. I've tried several of there soups and it was very average. They have a good pork chop and rice plate that is worth trying. On the Menu, they have several rice dishes that is also worth trying. I do appreciate that the food is fresh when they bring it out to us and I'm glad they are more authentic Vietnamese.

Tried pho here for the first time... This place has the sweetest soup broth. It was delicious! Very modest restaurant in China town. Only thing I thought was gross was the jasmine tea. I think it was either old or steeped for too long, it tasted like Cherry cough syrup, Dimetap to be exact lol. If you're coming here just for pho then I give this place a thumbs up! Located in the heart of China town with parking in the back of the restaurant. There's a few spots and when I went which was later then dinner time, I had no problems with finding parking. The waitresses were very courteous and cute. We also ordered the bun lop (pork dumplings) here and it was AMAZING! Definitely coming back here again.

Little has changed on the interior, except for the addition of a large fish tank. The menu is very typical of Vietnamese noodle houses, featuring a good selection of pho noodle soup, vermicelli noodle bowls, and rice dishes. I opted for a bowl of pho with medium sliced beef and brisket. My soup was full of meat which was reasonably tender and lean, and came in a broth that was well-seasoned. Colleen, my co-Volunteer Coordinator, ordered a bowl of Thai spicy pho, and she ordered it without any meat. She was happy with the flavour of her soup and its abundance of noodles. I started with a green onion cake, finding the two large rings of fried dough and green onions to be large and not too greasy, as well as a bit cheaper than I've had elsewhere. I also decided to do something I rarely do when I order pho - even though I find the complimentary green tea and broth from the soup to be more than enough liquid intake for one meal, I decided to try one of the iced drinks. Being a dreary winter day I felt some extra vitamin C was in order, and opted for a glass of fresh-squeezed orange juice. It was incredibly fresh and full of pulp - I literally felt like I was drinking an orange in liquid form. Prices are in line, if not lower, than other Vietnamese restaurants in the area. Our entire meal, which also included a can of pop for Colleen, cost less than $25 before the tip. Service was fast and friendly and neither of us had any complaints about the food. Winter is the perfect time for a steaming bowl of pho, so consider heading to Viet Huong.

Service is fast, but minimal. Nobody came to check on us at all during the duration of our meal. I had the beef satay soup, which, unfortunately, is only available in the regular size. I normally don't find the regular size filling enough to last me until the next meal. The soup was good though; not overly spicy with a nice peanut flavor to it. Not a fan of how lean the beef was though; I prefer some fattiness to my meat. My brother and mom both ordered a large bowl of pho and they felt the broth was watered down and bland. My mom felt the large size just meant more broth and did not feel full at the end of her meal. My mom also did not like how lean/tough the beef in her pho was either. For 2 large bowls of pho, a regular size bowl of satay, a small bowl of noodle only and a side order of spring rolls came out to just over $56. The Groupon is a good deal, but I don't know if I'd make this place one of my go-tos for Vietnamese food as there is definitely better out there. Staff won't allow happy hour specials at discounted price despite being in happy hour time frame. Hoang long is a modern clean space with bamboo accents and a newly renovated area. There is a large patio out front for summer. But it being closed off made the entrance kinda blending in. I was looking for the entrance and walked right by it. Trying to figure out how you get in is a slight challenge. As the door blends in so well and it appears it's just the patio. But that's the entrance. I visited quite early during happy hour at around 6pm. The place was entirely empty except for staff which was slightly disheartening. But I'm sure this place is bustling during the lunch hours. Wait staff were slow to greet me so I sat myself and grabbed my own menus. The menu Is vast. A huge range of thai and vietnamese foods. From soups, sandwiches, grilled meats and stews. Looking through the menu was overwhelming but at least there is something for everyone. We decided on trying the chicken satays with peanut sauce. These were a famous item popular during the taste of edmonton. They did not disappoint. They charred them so nicely I could hear the fire crackling in the dead of winter. But the best part was the peanut sauce. They don't provide this during the taste of edmonton. But it brings the dish to new heights. I would say...stick to the grilled meats here. They don't disappoint. I throughly enjoyed my bun bo hue. It was authentic and tasty. It made my list for top 5 in edmonton for sure. Portion was perfect and the ratio of meats and noodles were just right. Another great dish. My only vice was that it was happy hour...advertised from 3-7pm. But the staff would not allow discounted prices despite it only being 6pm. They had decent options like wine, beer or a customized cocktail for $4. The server states happy hour is over despite it clearly stating it is until 7pm on the menu. I point to the board and he says it's full price. Whatever. I don't like misrepresentation on menus. And discrepancys are misleading. For this I minused a star. Service was haphazard. I seated myself. Got my own condiments and even got my own drinks. I had to go to the counter to order my food and pay at the register. All the server did was put the food on my table and clean it up afterwards. The whole process downgraded the whole modern vibe to more of a cafeteria style establishment. I felt jipped tipping bc i basically served myself. So minus another star. Overall. The food was great. Slightly overpriced. But the atmosphere reflects the price in the heart of downtown. Service was okay but the whole happy hour misrepresentation was a huge turnoff. I won't ever be buying drinks here in the future. Bc hey...they don't follow the advertised prices on the menu. It's decent. I would revisit if I am in the area. But it definetly won't be a go to place that I would drive to if I was hungry.

Inside there was just one table occupied but there is a decent amount of seating for the lunch time crowd. It seemed cleaned. The combos they offer are a rice or noodle (pad thai that didn't look very appetizing) and then up to 3 or 4 items. The food was under heat lamps so I could see what the options were. I decided to get the fried rice and a few items. I choose a chicken first and looked at the other items before deciding on the vegetables with cashews. The woman serving me had the rectangle take out container about 2/3 full and she kept suggesting food such as the green beans and then the sweet and sour pork. Both didn't look very appetizing. I think she was hoping I would pay for as much food to get rid of since the lunch time crowd had passed but she wasn't generous with the quantity. I decided on the beef skewer and then was done. At half price I paid $7.35. I brought the food home and heated it up. I liked the beef skewer but the rest of the food wasn't very good. The food tasted greasy and I had to use my fingers to eat the chicken was it had lots of bones. I'm not sure if it's from this food, but I didn't feel well after. Definitely would not pay $14 for the food I had as lots of other great restaurants around. It would probably be better to go during the lunch hour when the food is hot and fresh but I'll pass next time I'm in the area.
