When I'm doubt always get the XL! It was $13.33 for XL & $12.38 for a medium. Made the mistake of getting a medium! But I did order the che ba mau so was plentiful by the time I finished! They take cash or etransfer only! Thank goodness for etransfer!! The steak was not the usual thin sliced rare beef but actual thicker cut of beef! Tender was tender! Overall, a satisfying meal!!

Street parking. This place is cash only or e-transfer. Serve pho only, have desserts and drinks menu as well. The pho is good.

Best hole in the wall pho in Chinatown. You walk out without being weighed down by the taste of sodium in the pho. The tea they offer is distinctly different than any other place. The prices are still lower than most places around thw city as they keep their menu simple and focused on pho. Service is always fast and moving so you'll get what you need super fast!

Longing for a good broth of pho in Edmonton! Definitely this is my favourite place in town. I had been trying to dine in at this restaurant. Unfortunately, last July they were closed for holiday and ended me to eat a different SE Asian food which left me disappointment at that time. Broth's taste was actually similar to Indonesian bakso (meatball soup) broth. Clear and meaty taste of broth. Not sweet like the ones that I mostly tasted at pho restaurants in Edmonton which I found overly sweet. Pho Dac Biet is also my usual order. Extra beefballs on the side. Although it was snowing outside, I ordered iced salted plum and the waiter came back and questioned me "you did know salted plum right?" I said, "surely I do that is why I ordered it" Finally I found one pho restaurant that I enjoy after almost 3 years looking for one.

The busy hustle of carts moving frantically to clear tables so that the next table could be sat. Deservedly so as the line fills the front entrance. The aroma of the broth boiling for hours temp your tastebuds. After 15 years, being here, my childhood comes rushing back. Tau bay has always been and always will be a staple of the Chinatown I remember growing up. I take in my first spoonful of broth before I even think of adding anything and the depth and body of the broth caresses every tastebud as an orchestra of flavours fill my senses. It hasn't changed a bit, the old mantra stays true "if it ain't broke don't fix it" The noodles soak up the essence of the broth and yet it is just a simple bowl of rice noodles and cuts of beef. Then how is it a bowl so simple can transcend its basic common denominator. Pagolac was my go to pho restaurant but that has now been replaced with this place. I hope to come here often and more frequently, to be honest I don't remember why I ever forgot.

A SOLID 4.5 STARS! If you're looking for a good bowl of pho, Pho Tau Bay is for you! Pho Tau Bay ONLY specializes in pho noodle soup so don't expect a large menu filled with rice dishes or appetizers. THIS PLACE ONLY ACCEPTS CASH SO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SOME. I ordered the Pho Tai (rare steak) in a small bowl which was around $8. This is some of the best pho I've had, the broth is flavorful without being too salty or oily, the meat is tender, the noodles can be a little clumped together but its still good. The onions/greens that come in a bowl are a little limited but the bean sprouts/mint are abundant! The area is similar to a larger alleyway with other shops/restaurants nearby parking can be found on the curb alongside the restaurant. Overall a good, hearty meal that is very very affordable! Would recommend this place if you're in Calgary and looking for good pho. Don't forget the cash! :-)

Ah, Tau Bay, this visit is long overdue. It must be over two years since I've had a taste of your glorious pho. So much has changed since then and by so much, I mean that the istaubayopen.com website no longer exists (RIP buddy). I don't know a better way to have a cult following then to have a website dedicated solely to that! Someone please rekindle the magic? I've tried to go a few days and they always seem to be closed randomly. Plus, they have the most bizarre hours - we went on a Tuesday for dinner and they close at 6:30pm. WHAT? Even then, there were people piling in for last call. I guess when you're that popular and the price is right ($9.05 for an XL, $8.20 for a medium), you can do whatever you want. If you've never been before, shame on you. It's a staple in Edmonton for a reason. The place is bare Vietnamese minimalism but let's be serious, you're only there for one thing and one thing only. Just make sure to bring cash and you're golden. Service is friendly and fast, your bowl comes out in 5 minutes tops. - Dac biet (#1) ($9.05 extra large) - special combo with steak, flank, well-done tendon and tripe. Essentially, you're smorgasbord of meat - you get a bit of everything. Let's talk about the broth - fragrant, aromatic, and not oily, greasy or over salted. Just divine. It also has the perfect balance of sweetness to it that just puts the broth into over-the-top goodness. Dinomite. - Tai, nam, gau (#9) ($9.05 extra large) - my buddy had the steak, well-done tendon and brisket pho. Essentially the same but with slightly different types of meat in it. It was his first time trying Tau Bay's pho and he's a big fan. Great spot to grab a hot, tasty bowl of pho for an extremely reasonable price. You seriously can't go wrong, other than coming on a day/evening when they are closed. Roll the dice and hope you get lucky (or you could use that thing called a telephone to check beforehand).

If you're looking for a pho place that serves up consistently good pho, and quick - with no fanfare, then look no further. Pho Tau Bay has been ranked one of the best places for your pho fix for many years, and rightly so - their broth is delicious and their service quick. It will be busy if you venture out around the dining hours - but the change over in tables is quick enough that you shouldn't have to wait too long. The establishment is very basic. You mark down your order on the paper provided. The food comes before you can come back from washing your hands. Eat. Pay cash. Leave.

The boyfriend has told me about this Pho place that is only open during business hours. I don't know if that is the case, but this place is certainly busy. This has got to be the best Pho I've tried here in Edmonton so far, still doesn't compare to my Richmond standards, but pretty dang good. Service is fantastic and super quick. We were seated and served less than 2 minutes after our order was taken. This place only accepts cash, so make sure you have some on hand before you go in.

I'm biased. I run the "infamous" http://istaubayopen.com/ and have been patronizing this establishment for years. So, it's no surprise I give it 5 stars because it has yet to disappoint me. I've occasionally strayed to try other pho in the city, but I always feel like I'm cheating on a lover when I do. The grass isn't greener, people! When you have the best, you should stick around. The broth is very savory, unlike some places where there's a strange sweet aftertaste. Not here: piled high with noodles and generous servings of meat, the best part is that the experience is very consistent day after day. There's just something about that broth... Service is swift and nice. Not an upscale restaurant by any means, but stop being a snob already and visit this pho-only establishment.

    Best pho!

When I've got a hankering for a bowl of Vietnamese noodle soup Tau Bay is the spot that I head to first. My first visit was back in my junior high days when a girlfriend of mine introduced me to it, and memories of that meal still come back to me each time I visit. When you walk into the restaurant the first thing that hits you is the smell of the fragrant broth used in each bowl of their noodle soup. Tau Bay Restaurant serves only variations of pho noodle soup (and drinks) and nothing else - they've focused on their one specialty and execute it well every time. The pho here comes in twenty different variations, all different depending on combinations of meat in the bowl. Each bowl comes in a medium ($7.50) or large ($8.50) size garnished with cilantro, green onion and onion slices, served with a plate of bean sprouts, lime wedges, Thai basil and Thai red chilies. It's the standard fixins you get with your pho, and the pricing is on par with other Vietnamese restaurants in Chinatown. What I find sets Tau Bay apart from the rest is the broth. The broth is fragrant, has a meaty depth to it and has just the right amount of fat that makes it smooth but not overly oily. There is a delicate sweetness to the broth that I really enjoy and the combination of herbs they use just suits my palate. The rice noodles are cooked to a nice al dente consistency and every bite is great down to the very last drop of soup. The staff are friendly, and like many other restaurants, you don't get much service. But for a restaurant where I just want to stop by to warm up quick with a bowl of noodle soup, Tau Bay Restaurant fits the bill.

This is one of my favourite vietnamese places for soup and appetizers. The rice and vermicelli dishes are mediocre in comparison so make sure to order what they specialize in. If I come with a big group I like to order as many appetizers as possible as it's similar to vietnamese street foods like crepes, tapioca dumplings and deep fried goodies. Little has changed on the interior, except for the addition of a large fish tank. The menu is very typical of Vietnamese noodle houses, featuring a good selection of pho noodle soup, vermicelli noodle bowls, and rice dishes. I opted for a bowl of pho with medium sliced beef and brisket. My soup was full of meat which was reasonably tender and lean, and came in a broth that was well-seasoned. Colleen, my co-Volunteer Coordinator, ordered a bowl of Thai spicy pho, and she ordered it without any meat. She was happy with the flavour of her soup and its abundance of noodles. I started with a green onion cake, finding the two large rings of fried dough and green onions to be large and not too greasy, as well as a bit cheaper than I've had elsewhere. I also decided to do something I rarely do when I order pho - even though I find the complimentary green tea and broth from the soup to be more than enough liquid intake for one meal, I decided to try one of the iced drinks. Being a dreary winter day I felt some extra vitamin C was in order, and opted for a glass of fresh-squeezed orange juice. It was incredibly fresh and full of pulp - I literally felt like I was drinking an orange in liquid form. Prices are in line, if not lower, than other Vietnamese restaurants in the area. Our entire meal, which also included a can of pop for Colleen, cost less than $25 before the tip. Service was fast and friendly and neither of us had any complaints about the food. Winter is the perfect time for a steaming bowl of pho, so consider heading to Viet Huong.

Service is fast, but minimal. Nobody came to check on us at all during the duration of our meal. I had the beef satay soup, which, unfortunately, is only available in the regular size. I normally don't find the regular size filling enough to last me until the next meal. The soup was good though; not overly spicy with a nice peanut flavor to it. Not a fan of how lean the beef was though; I prefer some fattiness to my meat. My brother and mom both ordered a large bowl of pho and they felt the broth was watered down and bland. My mom felt the large size just meant more broth and did not feel full at the end of her meal. My mom also did not like how lean/tough the beef in her pho was either. For 2 large bowls of pho, a regular size bowl of satay, a small bowl of noodle only and a side order of spring rolls came out to just over $56. The Groupon is a good deal, but I don't know if I'd make this place one of my go-tos for Vietnamese food as there is definitely better out there. Staff won't allow happy hour specials at discounted price despite being in happy hour time frame. Hoang long is a modern clean space with bamboo accents and a newly renovated area. There is a large patio out front for summer. But it being closed off made the entrance kinda blending in. I was looking for the entrance and walked right by it. Trying to figure out how you get in is a slight challenge. As the door blends in so well and it appears it's just the patio. But that's the entrance. I visited quite early during happy hour at around 6pm. The place was entirely empty except for staff which was slightly disheartening. But I'm sure this place is bustling during the lunch hours. Wait staff were slow to greet me so I sat myself and grabbed my own menus. The menu Is vast. A huge range of thai and vietnamese foods. From soups, sandwiches, grilled meats and stews. Looking through the menu was overwhelming but at least there is something for everyone. We decided on trying the chicken satays with peanut sauce. These were a famous item popular during the taste of edmonton. They did not disappoint. They charred them so nicely I could hear the fire crackling in the dead of winter. But the best part was the peanut sauce. They don't provide this during the taste of edmonton. But it brings the dish to new heights. I would say...stick to the grilled meats here. They don't disappoint. I throughly enjoyed my bun bo hue. It was authentic and tasty. It made my list for top 5 in edmonton for sure. Portion was perfect and the ratio of meats and noodles were just right. Another great dish. My only vice was that it was happy hour...advertised from 3-7pm. But the staff would not allow discounted prices despite it only being 6pm. They had decent options like wine, beer or a customized cocktail for $4. The server states happy hour is over despite it clearly stating it is until 7pm on the menu. I point to the board and he says it's full price. Whatever. I don't like misrepresentation on menus. And discrepancys are misleading. For this I minused a star. Service was haphazard. I seated myself. Got my own condiments and even got my own drinks. I had to go to the counter to order my food and pay at the register. All the server did was put the food on my table and clean it up afterwards. The whole process downgraded the whole modern vibe to more of a cafeteria style establishment. I felt jipped tipping bc i basically served myself. So minus another star. Overall. The food was great. Slightly overpriced. But the atmosphere reflects the price in the heart of downtown. Service was okay but the whole happy hour misrepresentation was a huge turnoff. I won't ever be buying drinks here in the future. Bc hey...they don't follow the advertised prices on the menu. It's decent. I would revisit if I am in the area. I decided to get the fried rice and a few items. I choose a chicken first and looked at the other items before deciding on the vegetables with cashews. The woman serving me had the rectangle take out container about 2/3 full and she kept suggesting food such as the green beans and then the sweet and sour pork. Both didn't look very appetizing. I think she was hoping I would pay for as much food to get rid of since the lunch time crowd had passed but she wasn't generous with the quantity. I decided on the beef skewer and then was done. At half price I paid $7.35. I brought the food home and heated it up. I liked the beef skewer but the rest of the food wasn't very good. The food tasted greasy and I had to use my fingers to eat the chicken was it had lots of bones. I'm not sure if it's from this food, but I didn't feel well after. Definitely would not pay $14 for the food I had as lots of other great restaurants around. It would probably be better to go during the lunch hour when the food is hot and fresh but I'll pass next time I'm in the area.
