Halong Bay Noodle House, located at 16971-127 St NW in Edmonton (Newcastle shopping centre, across the street from Walmart), is the latest noodle house I have visited and eaten food from. I have ordered shrimp salad roll (available with pork, beef, chicken or shrimp, 2 or 4) with peanut sauce. This one never fails, wherever I have it !! At Halong Bay, the salad roll was excellent and delicious, and very fresh!! The peanut sauce was very tasty as well. My main course was a grilled chicken noodle dish served with vermicelli noodles, sliced grilled chicken, flavourful broth and a mix of sliced lettuce, cucumbers, carrots and bean sprouts. Their menu is a traditional Vietnamese menu, with appetizers (spring rolls, lettuce roll, chicken wings, green onion cakes, to name a few) vermicelli noodles, pho soups, and rice dishes. Pork, chicken, seafood, and beef are available for any dishes, so many dishes and flavours available for every taste. The restaurant interior is very nice, beautiful decoration, relaxing music in the background (so you don't have to talk loud if in the company of someone else). What a horrible experience. I haven't written a review for a while but for this I must. I was there a few weeks ago with my family. Normally we order pho dishes and they're not bad, but this time we've decided to try out their fried dishes, and this has to be one of the most disappointing experiences I've had in a while. We ordered 3 dishes: beef and vegetables, lemongrass chicken, and their special seafood on hot plate. All three dishes came out looking exactly the same. As a waiter or waitress, you have the responsibility to double check with your customer to see if this is what they want based on your knowledge of the dishes. When you order a beef or chicken dish at an Asian restaurant, typically you'd expect to get beef slices or chicken breast or chicken thigh slices. Not this place! They used the same beef and chicken that you'd get in your pho. They weren't even separated. They came out in chunks. Like who does that?? The sauce was disgusting. It was thickened using an incredible amount of corn starch, which made it look like thick glue. And this so called seafood dish for $27 had barely any seafood in it. When you're paying $27 for a dish, there's a certain level of expectation, and they dared to serve a hot plate of vegetables with a few scattered seafood hidden underneath. I eat here often. It's one of the best Vietnamese restaurants in Edmonton and on the north side of the city. The vermicelli bowls are excellent. The B6 is perfect for anybody wanting a full meal deal. The fresh rolls are to die for and I love the pork, chicken and shrimp ones. I love the coconut shrimp and the deep fried squid. Add to it a lemon soda. So traditional. Easy to find. Great parking. Great service. Very friendly. Clean interior. Nice and quiet for a friendly lunch or a date night. read more

I cannot believe I haven't rated this place. I've been here a few times and every time is is fantastic. The place is deceivingly large. Always clean and smells yummy when you walk in. I've learned a few things for this place: 1. You're greeted right away. 2. When you're ready to order close your menu and all menus on the table and someone will come over ASAP. 3. Try everything. 4. Kindest staff ever. I was hear on Saturday late late lunch. I tried the rate beef noodle soup, which comes in a few sizes I always order the small and can barely finish it. This broth is to die for!!!!!! My friend ordered the beef satay vermicelli bowl and gave me a taste it is my new favourite vermicelli bowl. In fact writing this review is making my mouth water. I ordered another beef satay vermicelli bowl to go so I could have it the next day (btw it was also delicious). When we went to pay for our food the server made a small mix up and charged me for my friends Diet Coke, she was so apologetic and genuinely upset about the error. That was the only hiccup. And really it's an honest mistake and I didn't have an issue with it. The food is amazing, I will come back for more and I love the friendly staff and cozy atmosphere on top of the great food. This was my first time ordering from this restaurant, and I'm basing my review only on the item that I ordered. What I will say is that the restaurant was very clean, service was great, and there were a few full tables with customers when I picked up my order. I ordered the chicken pad thai to go and while it was a large portion for $20, it was pretty bad. The fast food thai place has much better tasting pad thai. I knew ordering Pad Thai from a Vietnamese place would be questionable, but I didn't realize how bad it would be. By no means am I a pad thai expert, but I've had enough from Thai restaurants to know what it should look and taste like, and this didn't taste like pad thai at all. It was a strange combination of spices with some chopped peanuts and veggies thrown in. I had a few bites at home, but it went in the garbage. A waste of $20. If I try this place again, I'll stick with a vermicelli bowl or pho. read more

Have eaten in and taken out food from Halong Bay Noodle House since it opened in North Exmonton. Up until today we would have rated it five stars but today's food was very inferior in quantity and quality . It is also noted that the prices are considerably higher, in spite of the smaller quantity. Will not be eating from this restaurant ever again. read more

4 Big Thumbs up! The service is attentive. I don't think i've ever been eating a bowl of pho and been asked how my meal is... it was kind of a nice change. Prices are good, with most items ranging between 11 - 15 dollars. I started with a small order of spring rolls. They were good, but a little fishy. The soup, although a small, was quite large. I have definitely had broth elsewhere that was more flavourful, but this is a great option on the northside. They don't skimp on the meat, noodles, or any other fillings. read more

For starters, there are better options in Edmonton. We stopped by for lunch because of the Yelp reviews. However, the service was almost non existent. We were seated right away and menus were provided. Tea was dropped off but the tea pot was never refilled. Our server mistaken an order and we corrected her so one person was left waiting for his food while everyone else was eating. Food was okay. I ordered the vermicelli bowl with grilled beef and spring roll. The spring roll was made with the wheat wrapper. I always prefer the rice wrapper instead. The beef was grilled alright. There was a good amount of veggies. I tasted the pho broth and it had a strong star anise flavour. The broth was just okay. There was a good amount of meat and noodles. We never saw our server once food was dropped off until we got up to pay the bill. The restaurant only had a few tables of customers dining during lunch. They accept credit card payment which is always a plus. There is ample parking available on the plaza. read more

I came to Halong Bay Noodle House today with a coworker to celebrate her birthday. First off, they open at 10am on weekedays?!? Yes, please! Sooo, great to be in the door and served by 11am for an early workday lunch! Next, the layout is just GORGEOUS! From the huge wall photograph of what I presume to be Halong Bay to the beautiful entry way with bench and waterfall. Floor to ceiling windows and roll down shades that block just enough of the direct sun light but still let in natural light! The ladies' washroom was spacious, bright, and had a change table (I hope the men's does, too!). The staff greeted us with a warm smile and were attentive throughout our visit. Tea is automatically brough to your table - 2 thumbs up! We started off with a large order of grilled pork salad rolls - $7 for 4. They were okay but nothing to write home about. Basic rice paper, noodles, lettuce, and meat. These could easily be stepped up a notch with some basil and sliced carrots. The peanut dipping sauce was lovely and they gave us two bowls so we could each have one - very thoughtful! Next up, I had the Vermicelli bowl with all the options for $13! I quite liked the grilled pork, beef, chicken, shrimp, and spring roll. Next time, I'd pass on the shredded pork and meatball but it was great to try it all! Another awesome thing is that they seasoned their fish sauce! This is a pet peeve of mine when a Vietnamese restaurant gives me a bowl of plain fish sauce with no seasoning or love as I call it. The sauce here was quite good and pretty close to my favourite Vietnamese Spot (Golden Bird in Chinatown... But I digress...) I feel like this is a developing area, so there's lots of parking here. It wasn't busy on a weekday, so we were seated instantly upon entering. Decor is modern & a little dim inside, but there is a Vietnamese wall mural at the back wall which adds to the ambience. Space is moderately sized, so I'd say it's good for groups. There is a change table in the washroom & a high chair as well. Quite a few people came in for takeout which makes this restaurant seem promising. There's a lot on the menu, it makes it hard to choose. It was my first time there, so I thought I made a newbie mistake by ordering a Pad Thai in a Vietnamese restaurant, but it was a pleasant surprise. The flavour was deliciously authentic to Thai cuisine, but a bit more sour, (like a Thai-Vietnamese fusion) and thankfully not very spicy. Cost was $17 and I think that was a decent price but didn't have too much leftover. I was also feeling adventurous, so I got the lychee bubble milk. It tasted really good, but it was $6, and I feel like I can get better volume at lower cost at other bubble tea shops. Service was friendly and fairly quick. I also tried a mixed fried rice & lemongrass stir fry beef and they were equally delicious with different flavours and they were generous with the meat in each dish. A new Vietnamese place on the North side??? Why yes, we will be team players and try them out for a nice Wednesday lunch. Halong Bay Noodle House is the latest to arrive and if you didn't know, let me educate you about Halong Bay, one of the most amazing UNESCO World Heritage sites in the world. If you go to Northern Vietnam, it's a MUST. But quit distracting me, bro, let's get back to it. The interior is clean, bright and aesthetically pleasing to the eyes as they pay homage to the restaurant's name with an enormous mural of Halong Bay and it's jutting limestone islets. Super cool. Sorry, it's not pictured, you'll just have to go and see it for yourself. I like the open air counter, with a view of the kitchen to boot if you're interested in taking a peak. - Fresh salad rolls with tofu (V2) ($5.50 large) - 4 fresh salad rolls with tofu. I don't think I've ever ordered these with tofu in them but they were good. - Deep fried coconut shrimp (A3) ($12.50) - I was expecting succulent, large pieces of deep fried shrimp. Instead, we got 8 pieces of dinky little shrimplets. Sad face. Completely overpriced and not worth the steep $12.50 price tag. We couldn't taste any coconut in the shrimp and the shrimp's batter wasn't fried enough in the deep fryer. Skip it. - Halong special noodle soup (P1) ($10.00 large) - my buddy went with their special noodle soup. Always a reliable choice to determine how well their broth is made. I didn't have a taste but DBone devoured his bowl pretty quickly. He liked it but agreed that their broth is lacking. - Bun bo hue (H6) ($10.50) - Halong Bay's take on BBH - their description on their menu is Hue style vermicelli spicy soup with beef and pork. The pork mash meatballs (think hot pot style) were satisfying, delicious balls of goodness. I'd take a whole bowl full of these next time! As for the broth, it was lacking that fragrant, spicy (it was sadly too mild), depth in flavour that I associated with Cô Dô Hue. They are still North side champs in my books. - Chicken and mixed vegetables (D1) ($12.50) - our other buddy ordered a simple chicken and mixed vegetable rice dish. Pretty standard as you can get this at any Asian restaurant but hey, at least you're getting your daily veggie intake. Halong Bay is a decent spot if you're really far North side and looking for a quick, reasonable place to eat. I can't pinpoint exactly what they are doing to set themselves apart from the rest of the bajillion other Vietnamese restaurants in town but you'll have to go yourself to find out. read more

This is our go to noodle house. Consist, good value and great flavour. Have tried many items from the menu. We often order the salad wraps - always fresh made, a bun and a beef satay pho. They will even give you more vegetables and less noodles with the bun for no extra charge. So nice. read more

Jan 2020 update Food is still bland, even more expensive, 16 bucks for a single serve beef and noodle bowl and the service has gone from poor to terrible. In attentive and surly. They make a point of studiously avoiding eye contact or looking at u lest they need to bring u something. All three servers were cleaning tables then serving food without washing their hands. Went here a second time and things seem to have changed since my first visit. First, excellent service from the time we came in thru the door to our meal. Always checking to see how things were and re-filling our water. I decided to try the grilled pork chop, egg, shredded pork with rice (C5 on the menu). Pork was grilled very nicely and was a pretty filling meal. I also had the grilled pork salad roll with peanut sauce, this may become my new fave thing to always have when here. My friends had the deep fried shrimp, spring rolls and beef pho. They had no complaints and was actually too much for one, so she had plenty of leftover to take home. The only complaint from one of them was the Vietnamese iced coffee. She found it way too strong and had to ask for more condensed milk to lighten it up. It's nice to have this place close to my house for pho or salad roll fix. Will be back to try some other things off the menu. read more

This is the go to lunch spot for my fiancée and her work crew, had the pleasure of meeting her for lunch their today. I like this noodle house because it gives me an alternative to the well established Pho Hoan Pasteur in the northside. The Pho soup base is good, noodles aren't too soft or hard when the bowl gets to your table. Overall the Pho is pretty good although the portion size could be a little larger, I always have to order the largest size to feel full. What I don't enjoy as much is the vermicelli. The beef is tough. Like burnt tough. Only soaking it in fish sauce gives some relief. If you're looking for decent pho on the Northside you should consider trying this place. read more

I stumbled upon this place by complete accident and I'm glad I did! I was actually concerned with how modern it was that the food would be less than authentic, high ceilings, black wall to wall and a very open space. My fears were completely unfounded. I ordered the Tofu Vegetable Rice Noodle soup which was one of several veg options, yay choices! Now a lot of places dial in their vegetarian dishes but not so here! Piping hot flavourful clean broth with TONNES of vegetables not just your standard broccoli, carrot, onion and a few sad mushrooms. The service is simple but efficient, my order came in less than 10 minutes. The servers didn't check on me after my order arrived which is the only reason it's not a 5 star review, really it's a four and half because nothing else could be faulted. I also received free tea, something that's becoming rarer at some Pho places, and a side of beansprouts with that yummy aniseedy Thai fresh mint. My husband and I love Vietnamese food and we always try new places. This restaurant was open for a bit of time now but we didn't have time to try it out. Today we went with another friends and we were a bit nervous since one of our friends never had Vietnamese food before plus we were not sure how the food quality would be like. After looking at the menu, we saw some new stuff that other Vietnamese restaurants don't have but some are as usual. It shocked us after the first try of all the dishes, the food was so DELICOUS. This place hasn't been open for long, but I must say that we were impressed! It's within walking distance from our house, which is a huge bonus, but it also meant that we had the stroller with us when we showed up. This isn't always something an eatery appreciates, but they had no problem finding a place out of the way to park it. The also have really nice high chairs, another bonus. The decor is clean and simple, with the most notable feature being a huge mural that covers one entire wall. I really liked that it was understated, but still pretty. There are a fair few tables, but nothing feels cramped, even with the addition of the high chair. The menu is extensive. If you want soup, they have soup. Vermicelli? No problem. Rice bowls or stir fry? They have you covered. Satay? Check! Shawn had a pork vermicelli bowl, and I ordered a dish from the special menu, a sizzling satay platter (beef and onions). It had some heat to it! Shawn enjoyed his, but the pork came out a little cold, so we think they're still having some timing issues. It wasn't a big enough deal that it detracted from the experience at all. We also got an order of the green onion cakes. What can I say, we're a sucker for green onion cakes. They were huge, piping hot, and delicious! They even have the baby Finn stamp of approval, and he's getting pickier as he gets older. We will be back, especially seeing as they're so close by. Very clean and welcoming atmosphere. Our waiter was very attentive and hospitable, wore a smile all the time, and checked on us often. We were there for a small group for my son's birthday. They were very accommodating & placed my son's birthday cake in their fridge. Came here at the recommendation of friends and I probably won't return. Green onion cakes were decent, but the pho was subpar. I ordered a small with tripe, tendon, and rare steak. The tendon pieces were so small, the steak slices were dry, and I hardly had any tripe, instead I had a couple of very thin slices of brisket meat. The soup was salty and did not have any of the fragrant pho taste. There are much better Vietnamese restaurants within a 5 min drive away. read more
