Our simple vermicelli bowls that that we waited an hour and a half for. Cold when recieved.
    Joel L.

So, I have have been here before and had a really good experience. The dining room was clean and modern. Service was decent. Food was good. The vegan satay soup was really quite good. So a few weeks ago, we thought we would order take out from there. What a mistake. It took over an hour and a half to get our food and my husband had to pick up the food. And it was vermicelli bowls. How the heck to vermicelli bowls take an hour and a half to make? And no apologizes. No free spring rolls. Nothing taken off our bill. Not even a shrug of the shoulders to say "shit happens" The food was okay but cold by time my husband came home. We had to reheat it in the microwave. Not nice at all. Definately will be a few more years until I go there again.

I love trying new restaurants, especially ones that I've never even heard of before. Dang Good is such a place because I don't often venture to their Dovercourt location. However, I will literally travel to any corner of the city (and beyond) if the eating is good. CBC Edmonton's Best Restaurants 2019 said that Dang Good is the Best Restaurant North of the Core and that's plenty enough to get me through the door! You'll find them in a strip mall right by the traffic circle, and I have to admit that I did not realize that there was good food to be found in this area. I am so pleased to be proven wrong! While a strip mall is certainly not the height of luxury some of the best food is hiding within them - this I know for sure. The signage is bright and enticing. Honestly, who doesn't want to visit a place where the food is dang good? Inside, the restaurant is clean, nicely decorated, and fairly simple. I loved the Buddha statues that I spotted around the room. The dining area is a decent size with plenty of tables and our server was wonderfully friendly, referring to us as "family" for our entire visit. The cuisine on order at Dang Good is Vietnamese and their specialties are vermicelli noodle bowls and phở bowls. They also feature a very extensive vegan section on their menu. From the appetizer list I figured that the Chả Giò - Deep Fried Spring Rolls (Golden fried crispy imperial rolls wrapped with ground pork, carrot, tarro root, onion, and cellophane noodle. Served with Dang Good fish sauce - $7.95) would be a solid choice. I liked these because they came out quick and they were exactly what I wanted them to be. Piping hot, I enjoyed biting in and trying not to burn my mouth. Sometimes you just can't wait! Crispy and golden, the filling seemed a lot more homemade than the average spring roll. I could really taste the juicy pork and enjoyed the savoury flavours a lot. I especially loved the fish sauce and was sure to bathe each and every bite in sauce. These are a great example of a very common dish that satisfies every time. Next, there was only one item on my radar that I simply had to try; the Phở Bò Sả Tế - Pho Beef Saté (Our No. 1 seller. Spicy lemongrass peanut saté soup served with rice noodle, beef fillet, shredded cucumber & diced tomato. Topped with roasted peanuts, onion and cilantro - $13.95). This is the dish that everyone talks about and the reason that most people visit this restaurant. The huge bowl arrived in no time at all and I loved the mix of colours and promise of some serious heat. I jumped straight in, armed with chopsticks in one hand and a spoon in the other. Slurping is entirely expected and encouraged! The noodles themselves were great because they were nice and loose - not sticky. A giant sticky mass is never what you want. The pieces of thinly sliced rare beef on top were perfectly pink and beautifully tender. Once stirred into the broth they continued to cook and I really appreciated the nice quality of the meat. The texture and crunch from the peanuts was another very enjoyable element. The best for last is the broth, which is always the most key component in any style of phở. This one was delicious and seriously amped up with spices (just the right amount). The depth of flavour was there however, I did find myself looking for a bit more richness. I really enjoyed the cucumber and tomato within the broth which added beautiful and unexpected pops of juicy freshness. I was getting a lot of authenticity from the flavours. This soup is great and for anyone who considers themselves a lover of spice, it's certainly the one for you. I finished the whole dang bowl and felt incredibly satisfied. Dang Good is a great little spot. The food is very good and it's nice to see that they're bringing something delicious to an area of the city that doesn't have quite as many options. The prices are great and I'm always happy to find restaurants that don't shy away from using spice. Certainly worth the visit!

Some restaurants I don't understand. Dang Good is one of them. Even though I've only been here once, it's been crazy busy during both of my lunch visits. After a failed attempt to go for lunch at Shanghai 456 (they were randomly closed for 3 days), we decided to hit up nearby Dang Good. It still blows my mind how pricey their menu is compared to all the other Vietnamese joints in town. I complained about this last time but it still irks me. Service is friendly but slooooooow. Took awhile for them to take our orders and even longer to get our bowls. Another couple that came in after us got their bowls before we did. I'm guessing they were regulars. - Pho beef saté ($11.95) - spicy peanut saté soup with rice noodle, beef fillet, shredded cucumber, diced tomato, roasted peanuts, onion and cilantro. The broth was a little weak when I took a first sip but grew on me the more I ate. The addition of cucumber and tomato is different and adds a bit of sweetness to the broth. The spiciness is spot on. - Coconut seafood soup ($13.95) with noodles ($2.50) - coconut soup with prawns, scallops, mussels, squids, imitation crab meat and mixed vegetables. That's right, you have to pay an extra $2.50 for noodles! WTF. For a bowl that's already costing you $13.95, you'd think the noodles would be included. Nope. Aside from the price, the broth reminded me more of a Thai style soup than a Vietnamese one. Quite sweet and while the coconut is prominent, my mom wasn't loving her bowl. She was also disappointed with the fake crab being used rather than the real thing but let's be real, I can't think of a single place in town that uses real crab. - Pho seafood ($13.95) - chicken broth served with rice noodles, prawns, scallops, mussels, squid and imitation crab meat. They seem to skimp on the amount of seafood. My dad said it was decent but that he's had better. Not going to lie, the higher price point discourages me from coming back. DG is a decent spot but nowhere near my top choices in town when I want to eat Vietnamese food.

Yes... it's Damn Good!!! A nice cozy place with excellent food. From the Wok-Fried Dishes selection, I had the Ginger Beef on Rice. The beef was amazing!!! Very crispy but tender, perfection!!! The servers are very friendly with great service. Nice ambiance for a quite lunch or dinner. Definitely I'll come here again whenever I come to Edmonton :-)

I was pleasantly surprised by this restaurant. We were looking for a vegan place in the North end or even a place that had vegan options. The reviews were hit and miss on Yelp but once I saw the menu I wanted to give it a shot. I really appreciate the menu layout. It's so easy to know what is regular, gluten free, vegetarian and vegan. The menu is what got me in the door. We are central but depending on who we are visiting we can be in any part of the city and this is a great place for groups with most dietary needs. It's nestled away in the Circle Square strip mall by the groat road traffic circle. The entrance has a plastic palm tree with coconuts that I found amusing. The interior is peaceful, small and decorated in its own style. Wall art consists of large utensils and frying pans. Two large screens played a 3D aquarium. A waiter seated us and handed us two green menus. We ordered the tofu mango vegetable rolls with peanut dipping sauce, ginger "beef" (vegan so tofu) with rice and vegetables, vegan pho, Tsingtao beer from China and Saigon beer from Vietnam. The waiter suggested we try the vegetable rolls with the mango and he was right they were fantastic. The tofu was crispy on the outside and rolled in with rice noodles, lettuce and mango. Dipped in a thick peanut sauce it was the best light starter. My vegan pho was a new favorite. The fake beef was unlike anything I've had anywhere else. It had a great beef like look and texture and was sliced thin. The broth was the best vegan version I've had! This is my new pho location. Dean's ginger tofu dish was everything you'd expect from a ginger beef dish but with crispy tofu smothered in ginger sauce. Of the two beers I preferred the Tsingtao from China. It was a bit sweeter and had a medium taste. Saigon tasted good but in comparison was lighter in flavour. As the meal carried on I was disappointed in the wait staff. After we got our meal no one came by to offer another drink, dessert or the bill. We waited for 15 mins and finally decided to go up front to pay. The staff are hard working and the place was getting busier. A check up and the bill would have made it perfect. This place is extremely clean, in excellent condition, wonderful staff and excellent food. We left feeling full and not weighed down by excess salt and oil.

Went in for some won ton soup today, the munchies come in hard for it. The girlfriend found this little gem well searching new places to go. I got my soup and asked for noodles to be thrown in on top as well (thank you Tien Tuyen for getting me started on that). Almost finished my soup today and it was damn good and full! I could not finish my soup today, nor could the girlfriend finish her dish (vermicelli bowl) but really wanted to keep going. The service was really good as well. The interior was nice and calm. Easy to be fed and well medicated at this little gem. Stay medicated

A gem of a place. It's nestled in a strip mall in Northwest Edmonton with plenty of parking and a lovely Dutch Bakery next door. We've been a few times when we have a yen for Vietnamese soup. We went again today and wondered why we don't go more often. Delightful service, warm atmosphere and attention to details. The tea is very hot and the service is fast. It's obviously popular, in the hour we were there 8 people came in for take out. A steady stream of parties between 1 and 8 people flowed in and out. I suspect it's a neighbourhood favorite but even if you're not from this neck of the woods, make the trip, I'm pretty sure you won't be disappointed.

    Vegan Lemongrass soup

I am a total sucker for vegan Vietnamese food and will go ridiculous lengths to find the perfect bowl of soup. When I heard that one of the owners of Dang Good is(or was) vegan, and that they were able to make many of their options vegetarian, I was THERE. I first visited for Sunday lunch on a drizzly day. The owner was so sweet, and got very excited to hear we were vegan. I was between a few dishes so I asked his favourite. He highly recommended the Satay Soup, which veganized meant some delicious "beef" like protein, veggie broth, with absolutely no compromise in flavour. This soup, alongside an order of green onion cakes, was the perfect, most warming, coziest meal ever. When I raved and rambled to friends about my Satay soup, another pal piped up and told me I needed to try the Spicy Lemongrass soup next! So, after a swim the other night, my friend and I placed a takeout order for two of those, and of course another order of GOC, which we promptly devoured in the car. The soup, however, was devoured outside of Legislature on a chilly-ish night, like an impromptu picnic. GUYS, I don't know which soup I like best now! I love the Satay for its layers of warm, savoury flavour, and the Lemongrass soup for all the veggies and variety of proteins. In a perfect world I would just mix these soups together everytime so I could have both always. Will be back to Dang Good again and again. I am thinking this will be one of my favourites come winter. Now if only to bribe them to deliver the soup right to me omg.

This is one of my favourite vietnamese places for soup and appetizers. The rice and vermicelli dishes are mediocre in comparison so make sure to order what they specialize in. If I come with a big group I like to order as many appetizers as possible as it's similar to vietnamese street foods like crepes, tapioca dumplings and deep fried goodies. All of it is authentic and delicious. My must orders here are the duck salad and soup combo. It's what I come here for as no other place in edmonton has it on the menu that I know of. And it's pretty darn delicious. If I don't get that. The bun bo hue is loaded with so many meats that I never can finish it! I can't wait to go back to this locally owned business run by a family. Little has changed on the interior, except for the addition of a large fish tank. The menu is very typical of Vietnamese noodle houses, featuring a good selection of pho noodle soup, vermicelli noodle bowls, and rice dishes. I opted for a bowl of pho with medium sliced beef and brisket. My soup was full of meat which was reasonably tender and lean, and came in a broth that was well-seasoned. Colleen, my co-Volunteer Coordinator, ordered a bowl of Thai spicy pho, and she ordered it without any meat. She was happy with the flavour of her soup and its abundance of noodles. I started with a green onion cake, finding the two large rings of fried dough and green onions to be large and not too greasy, as well as a bit cheaper than I've had elsewhere. I also decided to do something I rarely do when I order pho - even though I find the complimentary green tea and broth from the soup to be more than enough liquid intake for one meal, I decided to try one of the iced drinks. Being a dreary winter day I felt some extra vitamin C was in order, and opted for a glass of fresh-squeezed orange juice. It was incredibly fresh and full of pulp - I literally felt like I was drinking an orange in liquid form. Prices are in line, if not lower, than other Vietnamese restaurants in the area. Our entire meal, which also included a can of pop for Colleen, cost less than $25 before the tip. Service was fast and friendly and neither of us had any complaints about the food. Winter is the perfect time for a steaming bowl of pho, so consider heading to Viet Huong.

I…read moredoubt that the Vietnamese population is greater here compared to in other cities but the culinary deliciousness and pure celebration of the cuisine that comes out of this community is second to none. Certainly a point of pride in our city! From the best phở in the country (King Noodle), near-perfect bánh mì (Van Loc), delicious plant-based fare (An Chay), to innovative street food expressions that you've never tasted before (Mãi Mãi)... We've got it all. And it's the best of the best. XO Bistro + Bar throws their name into the ring with a more elevated and modern Vietnamese dining experience, demonstrating that there's a sophisticated side to Viet food that demands representation as well. VUE Weekly loved this restaurant and named them #1 Best Vietnamese, #1 Best Late Night/All Night, and #1 Best Happy Hour in 2018. First opened in 2017 and now with two locations, I visited the original Downtown spot on a Saturday evening, anxiously anticipating the symphony of flavours ahead. XO Bistro is in good company on Edmonton's famous boardwalk street which is lined with a collection of many popular restaurants. The parking is a nightmare and the small handful of street parking spots always seem to be taken. But you'll figure it out. With its proximity to the ICE District you can easily imagine that this restaurant has been able to take advantage of the pre-game dinner crowd and post-game spillover from the Moss Pit. The restaurant is larger than you might imagine, with its soaring second-storey ceiling and filled with dark moody finishes and an impressive bar completing the lounge vibe. However, the real show-stopper is the life-sized cherry blossom tree right in the entranceway, covered in pink blossoms. This tree serves as a major focal point and it's difficult to take your eyes off of it! The servers are cheerful and friendly, and although there were no window tables available we were seated comfortably. Priding themselves on their cocktail program, I knew that an XO Original was a must and soon I found the Good Morning Vietnam (Gin, Soho, hibiscus, lime juice, lychee puree - $15.00) in my hand. A cocktail to match the restaurant perfectly! I loved that this beverage was fresh and fruity and wasn't too strong. Pretty and drinkable, the sweet flavour of lychee took the lead while tart notes from the lime and hibiscus leveled the beverage out. Without a doubt, the correct drink to sip on under the blush-hued blooms! XO Bistro's goal is to serve food that isn't always traditional but is always authentic. Bold, balanced flavours inspired by the everyday energy of Ho Chi Minh, Hanoi, and Da Nang. The liveliness and fresh takes are apparent on the menu right away and I was excited to order some dishes that felt new. Starting with appetizers, the Double Trouble (Rice paper, shrimp, lettuce, vermicelli, tangy fish sauce. Choice of pork or veggie spring roll - $11.25) stood out as something fun to try. Can't choose between a spring roll or a fresh roll? Get both! I loved this playful version and especially enjoyed getting to eat two types of rolls instead of just one! We chose the pork spring roll for the inside and I loved the textural crunch and juicy pork that it provided. Meanwhile, the outside was wrapped in rice paper, acting as a window to the shrimp enveloped within. Dunking each bite into the zippy fish sauce added just the right acidity. Wonderfully tasty, so much fun to eat, and striking presentation to boot! Another item that really caught my eye was the Bone Marrow (Roasted bone marrow, panko crust, toasted baguette, pâté - $19.00). A dish that I love but only come across seldomly. Now this was a dish that I certainly did not expect. But boy did I love it! Roasting the marrow topped with a crust of seasoned panko was inspired - a genius way to add texture (and more flavour) to an otherwise fairly gelatinous ingredient. Bread is such a huge component to Vietnamese cuisine (think bánh mì) because of the French colonization in the 1800s. The Viet people then proceeded to transform this bread into a completely new, localized culinary staple. The baguette at XO Bistro was absolute fresh, housemade(?) perfection. Crusty on the outside and chewy on the inside. I loved slathering the bread with ample amounts of delicious pâté (another "gift" from the French) and then topping it all off with spoonfuls of rich bone marrow. Each bite exemplified decadence and I reveled in it. This might very well have been the best bone marrow preparation that I've ever had. Vietnamese food might be one of the earlier examples of fusion cuisine, and while colonization sucks the food admittedly does not. XO Bistro provides everything that you know and love in terms of main dishes; from bánh mì to phở (there's even a "phở challenge" where if you eat an obscenely-sized bowl in 45 minutes you get a prize) to bún. Wait staff were slow to greet me so I sat myself and grabbed my own menus. The menu Is vast. A huge range of thai and vietnamese foods. From soups, sandwiches, grilled meats and stews. But the best part was the peanut sauce. They don't provide this during the taste of edmonton. But it brings the dish to new heights. I would say...stick to the grilled meats here. They don't disappoint. I throughly enjoyed my bun bo hue. It was authentic and tasty. It made my list for top 5 in edmonton for sure. Portion was perfect and the ratio of meats and noodles were just right. Another great dish. My only vice was that it was happy hour...advertised from 3-7pm. But the staff would not allow discounted prices despite it only being 6pm. They had decent options like wine, beer or a customized cocktail for $4. The server states happy hour is over despite it clearly stating it is until 7pm on the menu. I point to the board and he says it's full price. Whatever. I don't like misrepresentation on menus. And discrepancys are misleading. For this I minused a star. Service was haphazard. I seated myself. Got my own condiments and even got my own drinks. I had to go to the counter to order my food and pay at the register. All the server did was put the food on my table and clean it up afterwards. The whole process downgraded the whole modern vibe to more of a cafeteria style establishment. I felt jipped tipping bc i basically served myself. So minus another star. Overall. The food was great. Slightly overpriced. But the atmosphere reflects the price in the heart of downtown. Service was okay but the whole happy hour misrepresentation was a huge turnoff. I won't ever be buying drinks here in the future. Bc hey...they don't follow the advertised prices on the menu. It's decent. I would revisit if I am in the area. But it definetly won't be a go to place that I would drive to if I was hungry.

I was walking by and didn't have lunch but saw the sign for half price combos from 2-4PM. It was a…read morelittle after 2 so I went in to check it out. Inside there was just one table occupied but there is a decent amount of seating for the lunch time crowd. It seemed cleaned. The combos they offer are a rice or noodle (pad thai that didn't look very appetizing) and then up to 3 or 4 items. The food was under heat lamps so I could see what the options were. I decided to get the fried rice and a few items. I choose a chicken first and looked at the other items before deciding on the vegetables with cashews. The woman serving me had the rectangle take out container about 2/3 full and she kept suggesting food such as the green beans and then the sweet and sour pork. Both didn't look very appetizing. I think she was hoping I would pay for as much food to get rid of since the lunch time crowd had passed but she wasn't generous with the quantity. I decided on the beef skewer and then was done. At half price I paid $7.35. I brought the food home and heated it up. I liked the beef skewer but the rest of the food wasn't very good. The food tasted greasy and I had to use my fingers to eat the chicken was it had lots of bones. I'm not sure if it's from this food, but I didn't feel well after. Definitely would not pay $14 for the food I had as lots of other great restaurants around. It would probably be better to go during the lunch hour when the food is hot and fresh but I'll pass next time I'm in the area.
