Went to check out Syphay on Jasper on Saturday April 18. They showed up in my instagram feed and as I looked at reviews, I was encouraged. We ordered the meat spring rolls,the Lahp, the Seafood Pattaya and Pad Lad Nhaa. In some of the reviews that I read they talked about portions being small for the price you pay; our experience was quite the opposite. Large portion and appropriately priced. My partner couldn't finish his food, we ended up taking it home with us. The staff were friendly and attentive, always smiling and always pleasant. We got there shortly after they opened for dinner service and as we were leaving it was starting to get busy. We saw a lot of Skip drivers and rightfully so because their food was amazing! I enjoy coming to this location. My most recent visit was to enjoy a Chinatown Dining Week special but I've also been here to meet friends and just because I was craving delicious food. I kinda wish that their hours were a bit more expansive at times (mostly as I spent quite a while waiting in the cold recently to visit) but the wait is worth it. The food is SO tasty! I love their curries! Their Thai iced tea is probably my favourite. It is a hit when getting delivery and takeout too. So good. :) read more

CREDIT CARD FRAUD: On 2025DEC08 two quick charges for $3000 and $2750 were put on my credit card from Syphay. Called restaurant and they said call the police and hung up. Called 3 times to leave my number for the Manager Shauna to call me back, still hasn't. Reported fraud to Mastercard and police. Have since learned that several others have had fraudulent charges put on their credit cards in the last couple of days. Confirmed with Visa and Mastercard that once you have used your credit card with a business they are automatically pre-authorized to put through additional charges without your explicit authorization and the credit card companies do not consider this fraud because you have implicitly authorized them to make charges (Read the fine print on your credit card agreement). They will open an investigation but there is no guarantee that the charges will be reversed. We have been a long term Syphay customer and are devastate to learn that they are doing this. Syphay has its good points, but it should be better. It's a fine place to bring folks who are dipping their toes into spicy food, but not for Thai food enthusiasts. It's solid westernized Thai food (chocolate sauce on mango coconut rice, why) and there are definitely better Thai offerings in the area. Case in point is the Pad Siew, it should be so good, yet very average the last few times we had it. Same with the Pad Thai, very meh and uninspired, really missing the layers of flavour, the citrus and chilies. Mostly I taste tomato paste and sugar. More than a few times I've had clumpy undercooked noodles. There is also a limited selection of meats (mainly chicken, beef or tofu) and dishes relative to other local Thai places like Boualouang. What I wouldn't give for some duck, or more fish options. A person avoiding pork, however, would appreciate this menu. One dish that is consistently excellent is Lahp Sinn, I could eat that all day. The Tohm Yum Gai had a ton of chicken in it, very generous, but it's not as spicy and sour as I would like, or even as I would make myself. Customer service is lacking at times. The last time we ordered pickup during Chinatown Dining Week, the staff was very short on the phone, and I had to interrupt twice so I could continue my order without being hung up on. They also don't tend to ask about spice level, and honestly the choice is appreciated. When I've gone to the restaurant to pick up, however, everything is ready and perfectly packaged, and the service has been polite. BEWARE if you order online, you'll end up having to pick up from their Calgary Trail location. Best to call the downtown location directly if you plan to pick up. Average Thai food, all the way. Good luck to them in their Calgary Trail location. I hope they will maintain their downtown location and not let the quality slip. read more

History notes that, this Laotian family run business is reputable, and a choice for downtown east enders needing some complex and satisfying south asian flavours, albeit in a rather sparse area for eateries. Recently, I took a small group for a lunch and debrief of our busy summer running programs and activities for youth. I struggled for a long minute in deciding on where to go, but when I though of Syphay it was a no brainer... A pale and hardley noticable building (except the large "Syphay Restaurant" sign), next to the edge of what is really considered downtown, this table service dining spot is mainly about the quality and freshness of their south asian curries and noodles. They have a distinctive style, which I associate with their particular cultural roots, but the pad tai's, color named curries and rice choices are going to be pretty familiar to fans of asian cuisine. This is an authentic asian culinary restaurant. No mistaking that they stick to what they know and what they do best. Laos and Thai dishes. So, if you want to experience the real deal, this is a great choice. Lots of items and drinks on their menu, and they are pretty flexible on the amount of spiciness you want and will usually ask you where you prefer your heat levels in your meals. The prices are also very reasonable for what you get. It gets really really busy over lunch. You have to be aware that this is a go to spot for many working folks in the core, so brace (and time well) yourself, but know that it is well worth any wait to indulge in the sultry and deep profiles of south asian cuisine at its most refined and satisfying. read more

This is the only local place I will go for Thai food... and when I travel? We always say "it's not as good as Syphay". Maybe we will change our tune when we go to actual Thailand. We have never even once been disappointed with an experience here, whether dining in or taking out. It is always delicious, and they always deliver on the spice if you ask for it. My friend went for the panang curry which was deliciously creamy, fragrant, nutty, and with a delicious rainbow of crunch vegetables. I had the pineapple curry, and had asked for the highest level of spice. The server advised me that "Thai Spicy" was their highest, so this is what I ordered. Perfection. Combined with the sweetness of the pineapple, it was so good. Both dishes had a generous amount of chicken, and paired with coconut rice our meals just excellent. Syphay is a small place, cozy, and during the pandemic there is a lot of space between the tables. So, seating is limited. I'm not going to waste my time to review this restaurant as the service we received was incredibly horrible. Despite the good comments I heard from my colleagues, the food was meh, the restaurant was dirty and the service was wretched. I can't recall walking out of a restaurant after a meal, feeling so utterly angry. The restaurant was so cold inside that we wore our coats and I ate with gloves on. When asked to move to a table farther from the door the waiter said that table wasn't clean. So disappointed. There are way better Thai restaurants. Avoid this one. read more

Syphay is without doubt one of my favourite places in Edmonton, and I'm so happy they're staying open for take-away during the Covid-19 shut down. Everything I've tried there has been great, but my favourites are the Tohm Kha soup, and the green curry (Gang-Keauy) with shrimp and no bell peppers (cause I hate bell peppers). And coconut rice on the side, OF COURSE! While this sounds like just a starter and a main, honestly the helpings are huge and this is going to be enough for 3-4 meals unless you're absolutely ravenous. The tohm kha is DELICIOUS, a mildly spicy coconut based soup with mushrooms and your choice of meat or tofu. All their main dishes are great, but their green curries are truly outstanding - they also have a seafood one that is amazing if you particularly like seafood. And it's perfection with coconut rice. I've found their 'medium' spice level on the green curry is maybe a little higher than you might expect for a medium, so if you're a spice wimp definitely go for the mildest version. But as long as you're fine with spice, enjoy the medium or hot, you're in for a treat. Syphay are on Skip the Dishes, or you can also phone them direct and pick up, in which case you'll get 15% off your order. However, at busy times, you're going to have a very hard time getting through by phone, be warned! Skip the Dishes (either delivery or pick up) is faster for the impatient. Which is great, I think - because I hope it means they're getting lots of business and will still be around once the great coronavirus isolation is over. And don't forget to add a big tip for the restaurant either way! There's a parking lot out front, usually packed to bursting during normal times but currently mostly empty with plenty of room to park for pick up. Seating areas of the restaurant are currently cordoned off, leaving a spacious area to come in and pick up your order. Staff carefully sanitize the counter, containers, and bags with each order. Everything is carefully packed in watertight plastic bags inside styrofoam containers to keep it piping hot but without any risk of spillage in the car. I can't recommend the food here highly enough, this is definitely my comfort food for isolation and if you haven't tried it yet, do check it out! read more

Syphay is - in my opinion - one of the best Thai resturaunts in Edmonton! We ordered the pad Thai, tom yum soup and pad piew wan. The pad thai is sooooo delicious!! The noodles are chewy. There is a good balance of sweet and savoury. They don't cheap out on the meat and vegetables either! Tom yum soup was a bit salty. I felt like we might have gotten the end of the soup batch (not sure). But nevertheless, still good and worth a try! We just ate it with rice to help balance the saltiness. Pad piew wan is deep fried chicken with a sweet and sour sauce mixed in with vegetables! One of my favourite dishes here. Chicken is crispy. Sauce is well balanced and vegetables are not over cooked and still have the crispiness to them! Yum. If you've never tried Thai iced tea you should give hahah a try too! read more

We absolutely love this place. We have been many times now and have never left disappointed. We try to switch it up each visit and explore the menu... the different curries are all delicious and if you are a fan of spicy food as we are the "hot" level of spice will satisfy you. We ordered all our dishes this past visit as "hot" and we were dying at the end (good dying of course... the way we like it). A great spot on a cold night, Syphay is ALWAYS available on Groupon seemingly for those who would like to try it out on the cheap. So for Chinatown Dining Week, we decided to grab some food from Syphay. We decided to get a combo with beef phanag curry and tofu phanag curry. Both came with plain or coconut rice and either veggie or meat spring rolls and either a chicken or veggie Thom Yum soup. We both went with coconut rice and I chose the veggie spring rolls while my husband went with the meat ones. I idd the veggie Thom Yum soup while my husband went with the chicken. Also, becuase I was craving it we went with the shrimp pad Thai. We had to wait awhile because they were backlogged, but the food when it came was delicous. The Tohm Yum soup was spicy and bold. The coconut rice was fragrent and sweet. The curry had the right amount of spice for us and was creamy and full of veggies and either the meat or tofu that we ordered. The pad Thai was the perfect combination of hot and sour, full of shrimp and fresh veggies. The only disappointment was the spring rolls. They were crispy, but mine were pretty empty of veggies...they were full of air. My hubby wasn't that thrilled with his meat ones either. I would skip this dish next time. A table of two friends catching up ended up being a full out birthday cake celebration. There was a high nod of approval from a 5 year old on both vegetarian and meat spring rolls and most of his two scoops of rice were even consumed with little fuss and a comment of "it tastes sweet" (yep, coconut rice sure does and we had a good laugh!). As we had two more adults and a child join us, more dishes were ordered beyond what the two of us had requested. That's just how we roll when we see friends, invite them to join us at the table and that's how a good food sharing adventure starts. We were all happy with the 4 different dishes and of course the kid wasn't the only one enjoying spring rolls! I thought it was also really good of the restaurant to allow us to bring in the cake, let alone offer to light it up for us so we could sing happy birthday to our friend. What was a little off (and I do get adding people to our table after we just ordered can throw a waitress or apparently both of them off their game but we did ask if that would be ok) was the fact that we had to wait, then remind, ask again and then finally just grab plates and cutlery. Water was only refilled once and that was towards the end of the meal. The waitress taking the ongoing order seemed annoyed that our friends didn't magically have menus (again we asked but weren't given) and therefore didn't know what they wanted already. When menus were brought, it felt like the timing of her returning to get the order was really delayed. So when dropping the menus off or even taking the second order, it would have been a really good point to check with the table about using groupons before taking their order. We had already mentioned we had a groupon to use for the evening when we first sat down but the convo was never brought up again until we wanted to pay and we were told what we couldn't do. So be warned, only one groupon can be used per table even if there is two separate bills. As it was our friend's birthday, we let them use the groupon for their portion of the bill. I guess when I do go back to use my groupon (hopefully before it expires), I'll definitely make sure to remember that rule in case the off chance that scenario happens again. As many have already said, the food here is great. We came in with a Groupon which for this place is a smart way to get people in the door. There are a lot of Thai restaurants out there but not many this good. The green curry was excellent and the platting was gorgeous. We also had the Pad Thai which was very good. I plan to try something a little more adventurous next time. We will certainly return even without a Groupon. Groupons and similar discount marketing can be a double-edged sword especially when the product is this good. It usually means restaurants become really busy and service suffers. That was true for Syphay. Once seated, the service was fine but when we arrived there were over ten people waiting in the entrance designed to hold only four people yet tables for about 20 people were open and ready. All they needed was a greeter and an active busser to improve things. We all waited for no reason which takes away from the overall experience. The busboy was the slowest of the team which held up the entire operation. Many of the servers were busing tables to help move things along. They also had to seat everyone. Without the Groupon crowd maybe they are able to handle all of this. If they are wanting to maintain this volume of people, it's time for more staff. read more

I decide to try Syphay out because I saw a Groupon for the restaurant. The food we ordered was delicious and I appreciate that they let you pick the spicy level you want. In my opinion the management needs to work with staff on their customer service skills. Our server was not very friendly and didn't help us with the menu. I felt that I had to ask so many questions before she was willing to help. It's great that Syphay has a small parking lot, but it needs some work. It still boggles my mind how many good Thai places there are in town. Syphay, with two locations is doing quite well for themselves. I've been to the OG spot before and while that location may look like a shack from the outside, the food is legit. Well, having never been to the downtown location before, a Groupon popped up and what better way to try it than to save some moola at the same time. Located right beside Trang Tien, the inside is much more spacious and refined than their south side spot. We came on a Wednesday night and it wasn't busy at all. Think there were maybe two or three tables max the whole time we were there. Have no idea why they're not busy but must be because of the location? Well, don't let that deter you because there's two hidden gems right here. Plus you don't have to worry about waiting/making reservations unlike the south side location, which was packed the one time I went. The menus are faaaancy. The prices are along the lines of Boualouang and Thai Valley Grill, which I find pricier compared to a couple other spots in town. Service is excellent - our waitress was so friendly and genuine. You'll be in excellent hands. The menu is split into appetizers, soups (tohm yum/tohm kha) and salads to start. There's also a good variety of curries, stir fries (noodles, rice and seafood). - Thai iced tea and Thai iced coffee ($3.95 each) - three of us ordered a Thai iced tea while Mapledip went with an iced coffee. Good stuff but I found the iced tea a bit on the sweet side. Had a sip of my bud's iced coffee - awesome. And I don't even drink coffee! - Syphay platter ($12.95) - 4 meat spring rolls, 5 pineapple shrimp wraps and 8 garlic shrimp rolls. I'm never a big fan of ordering platters as they never seem to be worth the price tag but Mapledip loves them. Lightly deep fried and crunchy, it's decent enough but I would spend my money on another entrée over the platter. - Tohm yum with chicken ($11.95) - mushroom, lemongrass, galangal and kaffir lime leaves. The slightest bit of heat but good flavour. Everyone liked it. - Gang dang ($16.95) - red curry with coconut milk, bamboo shoots, green and red bell peppers, basil and kaffir lime leaves. So the waitress asked what spice level we wanted and we opted for SPICY. Like, she had to come back and ask us twice if we were sure we wanted spicy. I'm assuming the double confirmation was because two of them were not Asian? Well, we got our wish because it was SPICY (hence the capitals) but it was a tolerable heat. Well, that's assuming you can handle it because ironically enough, our other friend was struggling. Might have seen a few tears slip out. ;) - Gang keauy ($16.95) - green curry with coconut milk, green and red bell peppers, snap peas, broccoli, basil and kaffir lime leaves. This one was more mild in heat level but only a notch or so over the red curry. The way Syphay did it had me/us reminiscing about Thailand, it was that good. Both curries were thoroughly devoured. - Pad sieu ($16.95) - stir fry thick rice noodles in a light soy sauce, egg, bean sprouts, carrots, chives, peanuts and cilantro. This one was mild in heat compared to the curries but the pad sieu was probably my favourite dish of the night. Super flavourful and the noodle texture was spot on. - 2x Coconut rice ($4.00 each) - two orders was enough to fill the four of us. - Mango sticky rice ($5.95) - I've never really understood people's obsession with mango sticky rice. Don't get me wrong, it's tasty but it's not that unique, at least not to me. The mangoes were fresh with two generous scoops of vanilla ice cream and chocolate drizzle. - Coconut ice cream ($2.95) - really light and refreshing, you could taste and see coconut flakes in it. This was my favourite of the two desserts we ordered. Syphay is another excellent Thai restaurant in town. Add it to the ever growing list. Great hangout place with delicious eats. I strongly suggest making reservations before heading there because they get quite busy. I was happy with the attentive service that they have provided. We had a few people at our table who wanted a milder spice for their dishes and Syphay ensured that they would make it happen for us. Side of Coconut Rice is always a must, I feel like one order of good for 2 or 3 people. Took some photos in the beginning and then got too hungry but to lost off a few things that we had : Syphay Platter: this included a variety of shareable items, such as: 4 Meat Spring Rolls, 5 Pineapple Shrimp Wraps, and 8 Garlic Shrimp Rolls - a great way to try out a few deep fried goodies; I especially liked the garlic shrimp rolls , they were like a mini spring roll. Tum-Muk Hoong (Spicy): Shredded Green Papaya, Fresh Chili pepper, Carrots, Tomatoes, Spicy Lao Dressing, topped with Peanuts - omg to die for and I'm drooling thinking about it. It was a nice kick and spicy, the kind that makes you wanting more. Phanang Curry : Thai Phanang Curry, Coconut Milk, Green and Red Peppers, Broccoli, Snow Peas, Basil Leaves, Kaffir Lime Leaves - perfect blend of the red and green curry. A little bit spicy but good enough for those who can't handle their spice. Today was another dark and dreary winter day in Edmonton. The roads were miserable from yet another snow storm this morning. So, as per usual, in a bout of desperation and after thirty minutes of agonizing over Skip the Dishes' list of restaurants, I finally settled on a highly popular Thai restaurant that offered free delivery - Syphay Restaurant. Little did I know that some of my new YELP friends had already given this spot rave reviews. I was craving some Pad Thai and had grown weary of my usual haunt, Viphalay's. I just had to go with Syphay when I noticed the name. That's the poet in me. There's a witty pun here somewhere that I am just not seeing today. I went for the spring rolls and Pad Thai but a milder version of the dish as I can't handle spicy foods *she types with a literal sad face*. Ordering online through STD (nice acronym) was easy and completing the order took mere minutes. It is my latest addiction. Delivery times were expected to be a little longer given the condition of the roads. But what I like about using STD (heh) is that I can track the order much like Uber. The Pad Thai was worth it -- though could use a little more "zing". All in all my experience with this delivery was worthy of a 4 star rating despite the milder version of the Pad Thai being a little bland. The food arrived hot and the spring rolls hit the spot. This was my first experience with Thai food and it was pretty good! We ordered crispy shrimp, spicy basil chicken, pineapple fried rice, and ginger chicken. The shrimp was truly crispy and my personal favorite dish. My husband ordered the basil chicken extra spicy, and it seemed like all they did to make it "extra spicy" was add crushed pepper flakes. When we go back we will order the basil chicken regular instead. The pineapple rice was interesting! The chunks of pineapple were SO yummy!! Syphay has quickly become one of our favourite restaurants in the city to have consistently good quality Thai food! I've only come here twice but both times we really enjoyed the Green Curry with Beef (5/5), the chicken with cashew dish (5/5), the Penang Curry with Chicken (5/5) and of course coconut rice. A couple other dishes I've had but I likely won't order again is the "Syphay platter" which comes with three different deep-fried appetizers - the ingredients used inside the wrappers were sad and disappointing - think tiny shrimp. Also, the basil chicken was way too spicy for myself and most others at the table that it killed my palate at least- so unless you're a lover of super spicy food then best to avoid. As for seating, try and get here early if you can (they open at 5) because not only does it become difficult to get a table later, parking is also limited in the area and fills up fast since The Moth Care is located next door too. Also, try not to be seated at the table closest to the partition leading to the washrooms as you end up getting whiffs from the washroom which quickly becomes unpleasant while trying to eat. Other than that, service is always pleasant and food comes out fairly fast! Oh and i always order a Thai Iced Tea because it's so creamy but refreshing! Maybe ask for less ice though as like most Thai restaurants I've visited, the ice is jammed pack to the top of the glass so you don't end up getting much for tea in the end. I was craving Thai cuisine so decided to try this place out. OmG!!! It was amazing. Let me tell you all about it. Small restaurant located by a very very busy intersection so parking is not the best but somehow it works. It is suggested to call for reservations however my friend and i were to walk in and get a spot. It is a busy place and while in there people kept going in and out. Thai cuisine is by far my favourite type. If you're lactose intolerant like me, it's not something you have to worry about since they barely use milk, and if they do, it's usually coconut milk. Syphay off Jasper is just east of the Shaw Conference Centre, beside the Moth Cafe. Parking isn't the best in this location. Come with a big appetite because they have soo much to choose from! I was fortunate enough to go with a big group of friends. We chose to get the Salad rolls to start. The Basil salad rolls were our favourite. The peanut sauce that comes with it, is so delicious too! So we had a group of 6 people, and we decided to order a few entrees and eat family style. Totally recommend this! We ordered 1 dish from each section. Gang-Keauy Curry - decided this was the best dish. Just enough heat, and sooo much flavour! We also got the Pad Thai and the Pad Lao. If you had to choose - go for the Pad Lao. We found the Pad Thai didn't have as much flavour. We also ordered the Pad Bhaa which had some nice heat to it! We managed to have a variety of proteins. So we chose shrimp, chicken, beef and tofu among the selection of our items. Syphay did not disappoint. None of the dishes listed above come with rice. We normally frequent a Thai restaurant in Chinatown, so we decided to come try this place after purchasing a Groupon, and was pleasantly surprised. We ordered the Penang and pineapple curries, along with a side of coconut rice. The portion sizes are comparable to other restaurants. No complaints with the curry. Our only disappointment was the pad thai, but only because I prefer my pad thai to have that tamarind taste, whereas theirs tasted more ketchup-based. The place was pretty busy (most likely due to the Groupon), but even then, we got our order in fairly quickly, and our food arrived shortly after. Prices are comparable to other restaurants. The parking lot is small and fills quickly, but with Mirama gone now, we just parked in their empty parking lot. read more

Ordered Papaya salad, pineapple fried rice and Pad Kee Mao with beef. The salad is amazing, taste really good but a little bit spicy. Really liked the peanuts on top and the sauce. Pineapple fried rice is also really delicious, very large portion. Pad Kee Mao tastes ok, with lots of vegs and beef. Will definitely come again, and try something different. This was a "don't judge a book by it's cover" moment for me. A group of us came to celebrate a friend's birthday on a Saturday. At first I wasn't sure how to feel about Thai but I am SO glad they chose this place. The area may be a turn off to some. It's located at the beginning of Jasper ave. in a very rough looking section. As it's not in the hub of downtown it's not very busy and they have their own lot (although kind of awkward). The restaurant was fairly quiet for a Saturday night. Aside from our party, there were only 6 other people there. Our food was incredibly delicious! We ordered green curry with beef, pineapple curry chicken, coconut, sticky, and pineapple rice as well as a seafood dish. I can't say enough about how great it tasted especially the green and pineapple curry. We got everything mild which still had a spice to it. The food came out at a good pace. We heard lots of good things about Syphay, especially from the kind of Asian food nerds that you like to hear those sorts of things from. All good. The hunnybunny grabbed a Groupon as it floated by and we headed downtown a half-hour before the restaurant opened. There was a line. A line out the door. Before it opened. That's gotta be good, right? It was a mixed crowd; singles, families, like a hungry rainbow waiting to be fed. This anticipation was the last good moment of our Syphay visit. The entrance (and the area round the nearest tables) is clogged completely with those waiting to be seated; there's no way for people exiting to easily do so, and worst of all, the servers coming from the kitchen had to wearily navigate through the increasingly hangry crowd on each trip to and fro :-(. It took an hour-and-a-hard to actually get past the foyer, whereupon we saw a half-dozen tables sitting uncleared and unoccupied for at least another half-hour. WTF? Hey, there's a crowd of people who would kill to be seated at those tables! The hunnybunny wanted to clear the tables herself :-) So now we're two hours into waiting. Why didn't we leave? I have no idea. We descended into some sort of foodie 1000-yard stare, uncomprehending of our fate. In any normal situation I would have pulled the rip-cord and we'd be out of there. I still shake my head and can't figure out why we waited such a crazy time. Finally we're seated. Twenty minutes later we get **water** and it took almost an hour for our food to arrive after ordering. So we're almost 3.5 hours in before anything gets chewed. The bunny was almost delirious with hangry; I wasn't impressed. The Pad Keauy Talay and Pad Paa Phit and a side of coconut rice finally arrived. The bunny, who lived in both Laos and Thailand, judged the food authentic. It was beautifully presented. What I tasted was good, although the headache I now had put a damper on things. We'd ordered appetizer, but were told they were delayed and we'd have to wait. Yah, not so much. Cancelled. The portions were a good size, value for money perhaps a bit lacking. Would we try Syphay again, in any of their locations? Probably not, even if comped for the entire meal. The bitter taste in my mouth from that wait will probably last a while. Sorry. read more

This restaurant came HIGHLY recommended by hubby's co-workers so it was definitely on the list to try. We arrived shortly after it opened and we saw the restaurant begin to fill very quickly! The interior was cute and cozy, not at all what we were expecting. I ordered the Thai iced tea which was creamy and tasty and sort of reminiscent of a chai tea but was an alarming shade of orange! Don't let this deter you, it was delicious! We shared a 4 pc. order of meat spring rolls that came with a sweet chili dip. They were fresh, crispy and quite yummy. I had the Tohm Kha soup. It was creamy and fragrant, slightly spicy with lots of fresh mushrooms and really good sized shrimp. Next time I will order a side of rice noodles for $1 because I think soup needs noodles. But that's me... Hubby enjoyed the chicken Pad Thai sans soap (no cilantro) . I insisted he share a few bites and it was delicious! The portion size was huge so there was enough to take home. Syphay is a new-ish Thai place that opened up where an old Vietnamese restaurant used to be. We came here because it was across the street from someone's workplace who I was meeting for lunch during a weekday so it's a good location in the Quarters - an up and coming part of Edmonton's downtown. I enjoyed the food and some of the dishes were particularly good. The Goong Krateum (Crispy Garlic Shrimp) was the best dish that we ordered and I'd give it a 5/5. It's probably not the most healthy dish but tasted great. We also ordered a Pad Thai which was fairly standard and Coconut Rice. The service was friendly, and the food came out quickly. The portion sizes were huge - the Pad Thai and the Crispy Garlic Shrimp were too much for two people to finish. Add on the Coconut Rice and we had way too much food for two people. I'd definitely go back here again for Thai food (especially the Crispy Garlic Shrimp!). read more

Syphay Restaurant was on my list of Thai restaurants to visit and yesterday my friend suggested that we should go there! We didn't have troubles finding a parking spot so all good. As soon as we got to the restaurant we got directed to a table, nice set up, layout and decorations. We ordered two main dishes and a side of coconut rice, we decide to share and I think this is the better way to try a little bit of everything. We ordered a Pad Paa Phit, that is a crispy fish stir-fried in a chili sauce, coconut milk, red and green peppers, and basil, the basil gave it the perfect touch and a Pad Thai, that is stir-fry rice noodles in a chili tamarind sauce, topped with peanuts. Tohm yum, Garlic Shrimp Rolls, and Lunch Special (Sal's Best Lunch Special Award 2017) Long time customer, first time reviewer. I've had a lot of items from the menu but my faves are usually the tohm yum, pad thai, or lunch special. Tohm yum is a hot and sour soup consisting of mushrooms, lemongrass, galangal and kaffir lime leaves. I usually get it with chicken, but don't be scared to add in that basa fish. It's not pho but this soup is damn good. Garlic shrimp rolls were a good appetizer as well, usually for appetizers we get gai tod (deep fried curry chicken) which is bomb but we switched it up and it was still dope AF. The main and usual thing I order during lunch is the lunch special which is a choice of spring roll (meat or veg), curry (red, green, yellow), and rice (coconut or steamed). I'm all about that "meat spring roll, really spicy green curry and coconut rice" lifestyle. If you ain't with me, then go get the pad thai, cause that is also delicious here as well. I had a groupon so had to try out the place. Wow! Were we ever impressed! Generally I've found Thai food to have tiny portions, but everything that came out of the kitchen was a good size and looked delish! We ordered the tom yum soup, green curry and pad thai. It came to $57 and we were stuffed! The 4 year old came with us and ate undistracted the whole time! She had 3 bowls of tom yum! The decor is nice with live plants, thai sculptures and dividers to keep the dining areas intimate. The service was great, the food came quickly and the flavors were AH MAZE ING!
