    Thai beer on site
    Christine M.

The food here is spot-on and the flavours are delicious. I tried this first at a friend's house as take-out and liked it so much I decided to visit the Calgary Trail restaurant. This time, me and my dining partner ordered Phanang curry with beef (medium), Pad Bhaa with chicken (spicy) and pineapple rice. We'd had those dishes on a previous visit and they were great again. The spicy is not killer, just has a great warm kick and enhances the other flavours. There seemed to be a lot more chicken in the chicken dish than the beef in the beef dish, but both were heaping with fresh vegetables - onions, bell peppers, broccoli, snap peas, green beans, and Thai eggplant, which is such a treat. The pineapple rice had several large and perfectly cooked shrimp hiding inside, pieces of chicken, lots of egg, tons of cashews, and fresh chunks of pineapple. It's a delicious by itself and great next to those other saucy dishes. I docked a star because the menu said 6.95 for Thai beer, but they came as 8.00 each on the bill. I asked about it and the server said that prices went up and they hadn't updated their menus. But isn't the menu a kind of contract as far as prices go? Get your pen out and change it so we don't have to have that conversation.

I ordered a Phanang Curry with coconut rice and vegetable spring rolls lunch special for takeout. My order was ready when I arrived to pick it up, and the staff member helping me was friendly! My food was flavourful and full of vegetables, and the portion was large for the price. I will be returning soon!

It's a new year and it's time to get back into the swing of new restaurant reviews!! I am always excited for new Thai food experiences so checking out Syphay for their authentic Thai & Lao cuisine seemed like an excellent plan. This family-owned restaurant has been operating since 2004 and now have two locations in the city. You might remember them from the tiny house on Calgary Trail - that's where I first tried them many years ago. They have since closed the little house location and now have a new and modern spot in Empire Park. This is the restaurant that I visited on a recent Saturday evening. Edmonton Journal has named Syphay Best Thai Restaurant 2021 and Favourite Thai Restaurant 2022 and I was excited to try them out once again. I made a rookie mistake and did not make a reservation for our dinner. This is not advisable because I was faced with a 45 minute wait for a table. Syphay is popular! And busy! Be sure to make a reservation and don't do what I did. While the new space is very Thai-contemporary, it does feel a little bit vacant and soul-less to me. The tiny house might have been slightly dilapidated but it had character and personality for days. The new spot, further south on Calgary Trail, is nice but with the super high ceiling and white walls it almost feels like too much negative space. I did like the decor items around the room from Thailand and Laos but I wish that it felt warmer and cozier like the old location did. Our server was welcoming and friendly, happy to guide us through our food journey. When I eat Thai food I go straight for a Thai Iced Tea ($6.50) to drink. I drank these multiple times a day when I visited Thailand and I love being transported back to those memories. A perfect version, this mixture of black tea and condensed milk never disappoints. The delicious flavour is refreshing and comforting at the same time. One of my favourite drinks for sure! Moving to the appetizer round, I was really into the sounds of the Garlic Shrimp Rolls and the Pineapple Shrimp Wraps. So when I noticed the Syphay Platter (4 meat spring rolls, 5 pineapple shrimp wraps, 8 garlic shrimp rolls - $16.00) which includes both, this seemed like the correct thing to order! However, I was a bit deflated when the server informed us that they didn't have the garlic shrimp rolls available. This was a bummer because they were something that I really wanted to try. Instead, he told us that we could have the Vegetable Spring Rolls on our platter instead. There was a whole lot of brown on this plate! The meat spring rolls were mostly what you would expect; a crunchy tube with a savoury and juicy filling that tasted great dipped into the sweet chili sauce provided. I was more excited about the pineapple shrimp wraps (delectable triangle-shaped wraps with pineapple, mayo and shrimp filling) but found them to be a bit of a let-down. There just wasn't much filling inside of them at all and I barely got the flavours of pineapple, mayo or shrimp. Trace amounts. It was mostly just a crispy dough wrapper and not much else. The vegetable spring rolls were fine but the meat ones were better. I probably would have been happier with this plate if it had had the garlic shrimp rolls like it was supposed to. Next we went for a curry, of which there are seven types to choose from. They've got every colour (yellow, red, green) but I was most excited to see one of my favourites; Matsa-Man (Matsa-man curry, coconut milk, carrots, potatoes, kaffir lime leaves, peanuts - $21.00). I almost feel as if I have "graduated" out of the more basic curries and look for some of the more interesting/elusive ones these days. Matsa-man (or massaman) curry tends to be distinct in the fact that it is always served with beef and there are always potatoes in it (or at least that has been my experience). It's similar to a red curry but the spice profile is different, drawing on more Indian-style aromatics. The curries at Syphay are made to your chosen spice level (mild, medium, or spicy) and you can choose whatever protein you like (chicken, beef, tofu, shrimp, or basa fish). For my curry I picked a medium spice level and selected the beef since I've always seen massaman served with beef. I laid down a bed of rice and ladled the sweet and spicy curry on top. The curry itself was delicious. I could have used even a bit more spice but overall I loved the combination of coconut milk and expertly-combined herbs and spices. The beef was tender but didn't seem infused with the curry flavour as much as I would have liked. I noticed the same about the potatoes. I wanted deliciously stewy, tender potatoes, permeated by the bath of curry. However, these just tasted like bland boiled potatoes and if anything, they were slightly under cooked. I enjoyed the curry but there were definitely areas that could be improved. Speaking of the rice, I was happy to find Coconut Rice ($6.00) on the menu. It's not always on every menu, so when I find coconut rice on

This is a nice little establishment to get some very delicious Thai and Lao cuisine. For sitting in to eat, they were quick to get us to a seat, and the service was polite and courteous. The room has a minimal but spacious feel with a high ceiling; the features are subtle yet very defined; such as the pathos plants in the entrance, with little 2 inch silver snowflakes hanging below, each with a letter spelling "Syphay". The tables have a nice white and grey marble top, and there is a big restaurant logo on a feature wall. There were quiet a few options on the menu that were lactose free and gluten free which is a bonus for people with those doety constraints. During our visit, we ordered the Salad rolls (Shrimp, lettuce carrot, cucumber, Vermacelli noodles, served with peanut sauce with choice of fresh mint or basil) to start. These were a great appitizer! Coconut rice which was just how rice should be, sticky and steamy. The Pineapple curry with Shrimp was a wonderful topping for the rice. The fact that they utilize coconut milk for the curry made it so good; wonderful texture and flavor. Then there was the Pad Piew Wan (Sweet and sour chicken); it was served with green peppers and pineapple, with a fresh and crispy, but not crunchy texture. All the food we tried during this visit was amazing. Perfectly cooked to perfection. If i have one peice of advice when visiting: Ask for a seat deeper into the restaurant. The entrace is not double door, so everytime the door opens... you get a cold breeze for over half the year in Edmonton... and they seem busy with door dash and skip the dishes coming in and out a lot. would It was very busy,

If you're looking for really delicious Thai food please check this place out!! I can't believe I've never been here before the food was so tasty. I wish I could have tried everything on the menu but I guess I'll just have to come back again . I couldn't say I had a favorite dish everything was so good. I really enjoyed the sweet and sour chicken and I love putting the curry over the coconut rice. The shrimp and chicken were perfectly cooked and I left there feeling very satisfied. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. I didn't order any drinks that night so I can't report on the cocktails. The restaurant was very bright and open concept. I apologize in advance for my mispronunciation of probably everything on the menu. Another reason to come back and work on language. This meal definitely inspired conversations of Thailand getaways and culinary classes to come.

Great portion size, fresh, quality ingredients. Located in a busy plaza, so you may have to park further down. They're also usually quite busy with limited seating and a constant stream of pick up orders, delivery drivers, etc. Be patient, be kind They're super nice and they're moving as fast as they can.

We found this particularly helpful for choosing what meat/protein to put in our meals, and we all agreed that they knew what was best. As for the food, it was the most absolutely wonderful and authentic Thai I have ever had. Every dish was flavourful, fairly priced, and came in a huge portion! We have never gotten a single bad thing there (and we experiment often), and we have never left without takeout containers full to the brim. The leftovers are always amazing, too. I could go on and on about how much I love this restaurant, truly. What a lovely place to dine in St Albert that I wish I had discovered so much sooner! If you're interested in what to try, my favourites are the Pad Thai with chicken, or the Pad See Eiw with chicken or tofu. I'm not a beef lover, but they make it quite well there I will say. The curries are quite good but some of them get fairly spicy, at least for me. The peanut curry is definitely my favourite! As for appetizers, they have these excellent deep-fried crab and cream cheese dumplings that I can never get enough of! Be aware though, there are lots of peanuts used in recipes, so be careful if you have an allergy.

Seating arrangements are ok but can definitely could use a deep clean/upgrade - old time hole in the wall look, feel & vibe. During our latest visit, the restaurant opened up a few minutes late as owners were running a bit late. Service was slower as there was only one person attending 6+ tables that came in about the same time. The food tasted great but again was inconsistent with portions & plating. We both ordered the same Pad Thai Tom yum at the same time & one plate completely was missing mushrooms & lacked bean sprouts while the other had an abundance. The rice curry dishes are good but could use a much bigger portion of rice.
