Bua Thai Restaurant - two plates of food on a table - Thai Near Me - Edmonton, Alberta

Food can be very good. We have been there twice in the past year. The first time the food was great. The second it was just ok. We have eaten at this restaurant off and on for 20+ years. It needs some TLC, the interior and bathrooms are showing their age. It also wouldn't hurt to have some background music. Hopefully some changes will be made. It can be a great spot for Thai. read more

I used to frequent this place when I was younger and lived closer. I feel like I made this place better in my head, than it ever was. Perhaps they are just jaded, or over being open. The last time I went it was mediocre and the service, dry. There was no music and it was oddly quiet and hallow feeling. I have fond memories of this restaurant and perhaps I just went on an off day however I don't think I'll be back. I'd rather cling to my memories than be disappointed again. read more

this conveniently located restaurant is a place satisfy some a Thai craving for one day. Unfortunately it is a bit lack luster. The food is decent but not consistent with the prices. The service is good but that does not make up for the cost of the meal. Overall, give this place a try and then move on. read more

I used to come here more frequently, but visited here for the first time in years last night and was rather happy that the food quality remained rather good. The Coconut rice was fabulous and I really loved the curry sauce. The cashew chicken was pretty good as was the Thai iced tea. All in all a good meal served in pretty dishes with a good friend and relatively good quick service. The staff were attentive but not always there which was good. This restaurant is rather small by the way, so if you have a larger group a reservation might be helpful. read more

This review is based on my first time to Bua Thai. I went this past Thursday, and I have to say, even though all the surrounding restaurants (i.e,. Joe's, Sicilian Pasta Kitchen, etc.) where busy, for some reason Bua Thai was completely deserted inside - and just to add, this was prime time around 7pm. Now I'm not one to judge a restaurant just based on this, but it does leave an impression. Either way, I went in and had a seat, and decided to order a drink while I waited for a friend. Sure enough, the service was great (it was empty after all, so I would have been pretty surprised if the service was bad at this point). I ordered a Tiger, nice and chilled. Very refreshing. The waiter was more then helpful, and very attentive, and even tried to make small talk, which was nice. My friend arrived, and we took a look at the menu (which I have posted some pictures). Reiterating what other reviewers have said, the prices are high here - no doubt about it, but we didn't realize how high until the end. We ordered only two dishes, with some rice. A cashew chicken, and a curry chicken. Both arrived in moderate sized bowls, which with rice, could be a filling portion, but yet I found even after we finished I was a bit hungry. My friend ordered a coke with his meal, and that was that. After some chitchat, we asked for the bill, and sure enough it was around $70 for two dishes, a beer, and a coke (not including tip yet). We at first though it was someone else's bill, but no, it was definitely ours. Either way, while the food was indeed delicious and the service was good, in the end, the quiet ambiance, the not up-to-date decorations, the smaller portions, and the simple presentation just don't justify the high cost. read more

My dad took me out to Bua Thai recently, at his own suggestion - a miracle in itself, as he tends to be an Arby's/A&W/Wendy's kind of guy. It's another of those neighborhood places I've walked by countless times - after all, it's on my way practically everywhere - and had never even thought of entering, but thank you, Dad! Bua Thai was really, really good: a vast menu showcased tons of veggie and non-veggie offerings available at this somewhat finer-dining spot. The coconut rice is soft, fragrant and intensely flavourful, and was a perfect complement to the crisp vegetables and spongy tofu I ordered. Next time (and there will be a next time), though, I'd probably make a reservation as we were lucky to get a table as walk-ins. read more

Bua Thai Restaurant - the front of the restaurant - Thai Near Me - Edmonton, Alberta

This is one of the better Thai places I have tried in Edmonton. It does get slammed for lunch so plan accordingly. Dinner fares better but I would calling ahead instead of dropping by. I was recommended the cashew chicken here by a friend and it kinda became my go to dish here. Other dishes are acceptable. The problem is that even though I asked extra hot sometime the food didn't have the kick one craves once in a while. 3.5 Stars. read more

This is another of those places where the locale hurts what should be a standout. The decor is very nice, food is usually very good. But every time, someone suggests we go there for lunch, I weigh in my mind whether I really want the hassle of finding a parking spots. So do go for dinner when parking is a little easier, and do make a reservation as it is a tiny place. And try the green curry. read more

Great Thai food on Jasper Avenue I was working next door to Bua Thai so decided to try it for lunch today. I've been spoiled so badly by my absolute favorite Thai restaurant in Burnaby, BC (http://www.yelp.ca/biz/lhy-thai-restaurant-burnaby). I'm always a bit nervous about Thai restaurants. The food at Bua Thai was great. Tasty, reasonable size portions. I ordered their lunch curry special, red curry chicken with rice and two spring rolls. I was not disappointed. When I walked into the door, I was waved to a table by the man behind the counter. From that point on, I felt like I was not particularly welcome. The servers seemed to avoid me. The restaurant was not full, there was really no reason I could see for the inattention. Because of the less than stellar service, I can't bring myself to give them four stars. read more

My boyfriend and I had our reservations about Bua Thai when we first saw it (after finally finding it). The exterior is kind of shabby and easy to miss, so we initially thought it was closed. However our worries were unfounded - the meal we shared there was quite satisfying. We started with the spicy shrimp tom yum soup, and had the beef with lime leaves and a chicken curry for the main. Everything was tasty, but our favourite was definitely the beef. It was fragrant and tender, and perfect with their coconut rice. My boyfriend also really liked their rice and the chicken curry we got, but I found both to be a tad too sweet for my taste. I will be hesitant to return, as although the food was good, the ambiance was terrible. The restaurant was dead silent, and although our waiter was helpful and prompt, he was not particularly friendly. It made for an unwelcoming experience. When going, keep in mind that they do not have a debit machine. read more

I used to come here regularly for the past 15 years or so but it's been awhile now. This past weekend I decided to order takeout from here and my guests as I remember it being pretty good, Wow! Have they ever jacked up their prices! For $120 I ordered 2 Pad Thai, 2 Cashew Chicken, 1 Green Curry and 2 large coconut rice. As far as I'm concerned, the prices are extortion. The portion of green curry, which was almost $18 dollars, filled a small plastic container. The Pad Thai's only contained three shrimp each (for $19 each). The cashew chicken at $20 each was super oily. And the coconut rice (which was $7 each for the large). Unreal! Note that the curry dishes do NOT come with complimentary rice, which at that price point, really should. Overall, disappointed in the price vs. serving sizes. You'd be much better off getting Thai from almost any other restaurant as their prices and portions seem way more reasonable than this overpriced joint. read more

I've found myself at Bua Thai twice in this last month. I'll mention my second food venture first, because I found that one a lot tastier than the first one! My second Bua Thai experience starred the vegetable and rice dish with pineapples and cashews. This was a great dish! I was there with about 12 friends, and I decided the dish was too good not to share (or maybe I'm just too good a friend?) and everyone said they really liked it. The pineapples were so good and sweet! There were many different dishes being passed and shared around our table; calamari, chicken, and shrimp (oh my!) and everybody was enjoying it all. One of my friends said, "I don't know what they did to that (jalapeno peppered) steak, but they did it right." We did make lunch reservations for all of us, and they were able to accommodate us all (a little squishy, but kind of cozy) and our waters were constantly being refilled. In my first experience I had a basic vegetable dish. I found it extremely "alright." There were no bells, whistle, or horns; just cauliflower, broccoli and carrots. I was hoping for more spice and flavour, but there was none in this dish, but that's not always a bad thing, since some people want to try new and different things but are a little intimidated to take it to the next flavourful level. All in all it's a nice, tasty Thai experience. I'd totally go back again and try something new, though it would be hard not to get me some of that pineapple again! read more

Hadn't been to Bua Thai in years and for the life of me I can't figure out why. Friendly staff, nice patio with good afternoon sun, and quick service. My gal had the seafood with rice noodles and I had the chile beef with peppers and lime leaves. Hers was fabulous with lots of different seafoods and a delish sauce that was nice and mild for her tastes. I asked for mine to b nuclear spicy as I needed a good sweat cleanse and I love spicy Thai. Well they didn't disappoint! My nose was running, my eyes were leaking, I got a good case of the spicy hiccups and I loved every minute of it. The waitress and the chef were stunned at my resolve to inflict such significant pain on myself, but honestly I was "in my glory". Nothing a couple ice cold Chang brews couldn't solve. All in all a great meal and great service. Highly recommend, will b back soon. Andy read more

I've tried yellow curry tons of times and since moving to the downtown area I've been craving for yellow curry. We ordered a handful of things and the only thing I could say I actually enjoyed out of our $64 bill was the $4.99 coconut rice. I have to say we threw out more then 3/4 of the food. It tasted like something was really off. I've had the worst stomach since about half hour after eating and still feel awful. Can't say I will ever be back. read more

My first introduction to Thai food was here years ago and I haven't found anywhere better in Edmonton or Calgary. This hole in the wall will fool you from the outside, and there isn't a whole lot of room so make a reservation, but the food is AMAZING. Hands down the best Pad Thai and coconut rice there is. Large portions so you definitely will have leftovers to enjoy later. read more

I will admit I am a regular. They know my order the minute I walk in. What can I say? The place is great. Thai food that is second to none - especially the Panang Curry, Spicy Basil Beef, and Cashew Chicken. My only complaint is that is too small. Not a place you walk into on a Friday noon. You need reservations. read more

Oh, Bua Thai. This place calls to me. The fact that it is just blocks from my home and blocks from my work makes this restaurant a top pick for us in Edmonton. It's so easy to get take-out and head home for a delicious meal. Every vegetarian dish I've had here has been outstanding. And the service has always been exceptionally good. My two complaints are: (1) no vegetarian option on lunch menu, and (2) it's a little on the pricey side, though it's worth paying a little more for food this good. read more

Cashew chicken excellent , very similar to what u would find in Thailand. The spicy beef was very fishy. Coconut rice fantastic. Pad Thai very good. Spring rolls typical. Very pricey. Three people 90.00 including 2 beer, a tea and a coke. Bathroom not clean. Hope the kitchen was. read more

I guess there might not be that many Thai places in town or maybe people only eat Thai food as a special treat. Because this place, has the we are the most authentic Thai place ever!!!!! and we try really hard to keep it that way look. It's the kind of place people come to have an experience that feels authentic and cultured I had the pad Thai. It was not like the pad Thai's I had before. There was an abundance of soy sauce and just this weird tangy sauce that tasted like not pad Thai all over my pad Thai!!!!! The dish alleged to be pad Thai, did taste pretty good, and I was super hungry, so it worked. Not sure if I want to comeback here, unless I really want people to think I'm into 'exotic cuisine' and in touch with 'Asian culture' and oh so worldly. I read more

I was last here in the summer and I decided to come in again just a couple of nights ago. This place is really small some would say its just cozy. The service is very good we never had to wait to long to sit down and have our order taken. There was just the two of us and we ordered too much, so we had some for the next day.We ordered the cashew chicken and a beef dish with veggies, coconut rice. It was very good. The only complaint I have here is when it gets busy and full, I feel like a squashed sardine. All the tables are so close together. But I guess you gotta expect that when the restaraunt is so small. read more

Came for supper here and oh my goodness what a wonderfully fabulous place great service and great food can't say enough good things about it will definitely come back read more

a bit pricey for what you get and i have had better thai food. But all in all it was good enough

Food was great but service was HORRIBLE The expectations you have about the service from the sentence above, lower them a little more, keep going, yes the service here was that bad. Really bad. The food on the other hand made up for it. We got 3 types of shrimp Spicy, Penang, and another. They were all good Tom yum soup was ok, nothing special for me. Others at our table loved it. The shrimp fried rice was also delicious. Overall loved the food. Hated the service. 1 out of 10 for service 9 out of 10 for food read more

Love the food so much, but it is astonishing how expensive it has become. The cashew chicken is now a $19.99 dish. Heartbreaking.

2.5 stars: I am very hesitant to give this low rating; it is predominantly on the basis of price. TO GO: (therefore cannot comment on service at table) Host: Very courteous. Only 1 seated table, early dinner service. ORDERED: Fresh Thai Spring Rolls, Sticky Rice and Pineapple Curry Shrimp. Food was prepared quickly, hot and tasted fresh. Greater than 40.00 CDN. The food here is consistently above standard, with outstanding flavours. Unfortunately, there is no reason for this cost all things being equal. Given this, I find it difficult to re-visit this restaurant. read more

Amazing that food! All the food is cooked perfectly for amazing textures and flavor. I recommend coconut rice and anything with yellow curry! read more

Bua Thai Restaurant - Amazing food! - Thai Near Me - Edmonton, Alberta

Love Bua Thai! Fun-bordering-on-kitschy decor, great location right off Jasper, and the BEST shrimp tom-yum soup I've had, hands-down, ever. For us Oliver-inos, it's a great take-away spot with a pretty fast turnaround, but we've also always enjoyed the dining room, with its friendly servers and warm, comfortable ambiance. Portions are huge-- and considering it'll run you about the same as other Thai restaurants in Edmonton, that's a big plus. Street noodles are a hit out-the-park, and the papaya salad, as well as massaman and yellow curries are delicious for sure. I'd skip the satay if choosing among other delicious starters. read more

Don't be fooled by the outside of this place. It looks abandoned, but once you head inside you are pleasantly surprised by how nice it is. Like a secret hidden gem. I tried four different vegetarian dishes and they were all really good. Maybe I've lived here too long, but I think that this place is really good, not just good for Edmonton. I can't wait to go back. read more

Our favourite Thai restaurant in Edmonton. My husband is typically not a fan of SE Asian cuisine but he jumps at the chance to eat here. The whole menu is fabulous, but we usually stick with the tofu green curry, the drunken shrimp and number 46. The pad Thai is awesome too. read more

I have been going to Bua Thai for about 5 years now. The service is good, and the food is very tasty...well work the visit. The only downfall is that you have to order selectively if you want to eat 'healthy'. We usually order things like cashew chicken, and 'spicy beef', and although the flovors are wonderful, there is a lot of oil used in their preparation, and it often leaves me feeling unwell, unlike Thai Valley Grill & King & I. read more

This place would get 5 stars from me if the service was better. Despite that my wife and I frequently dine here and always order red Thai curry and the sizzling beef..easily some of the best Thai cuisine in the city, I have recommended to a lot of people and everyone has more then enjoyed there food. read more

Luv Luv Luv the food here! Atmosphere is not spectacular but not bad either. The food more than makes up for it. Cashew chicken and coconut rice is so yummy! Red curry chicken and basil beef is also GREAT! You need to get there early to get a seat as it's a small restaurant. read more

The taste is alright, but not matching the price in my opinion. $17 for an average quality chicken fried rice is a bit too steep. Not much room between tables. read more

My go-to Thai place. I've probably ordered half the menu by now and everything has been delicious.

AMAZING Thai food! I don't think I've ever eaten more flavourful food than the dishes served here. I am obsessed with the coconut rice, basil beef (so spicy and delicious), cashew chicken and red curry chicken. The price range isn't what I would call cheap, but the food is certainly not "cheap," so it's well worth what you pay for. If you're ordering as a group, that's helpful in terms of cost. If you're planning on eating in at a high-volume time, especially if you have a fairly large group, I would definitely recommend making a reservation as the restaurant is not big. They do do take-out though, and they even deliver! Certainly not common for a place like this. Good service too. I would highly recommend Bua Thai. read more
