Lunch menu

Numchok Wilai is one of my favourite Thai places in the city. I've been there at least half a dozen times by now, both for lunch and dinner, and have always had an excellent meal. You know it's going to be good when half the people you invite aren't even aware of it's location. Never judge a restaurant by it's exterior. Or in my books, the shabbier looking, the better. I think part of it's charm is that not many people know how amazing it really is. Numchok has a killer lunch deal ($12.95) which includes your choice of a dish, two veggie spring rolls, a small bowl of lemongrass soup and rice. There are 21 items to choose from (nine are vegetarian, couple curries, pad thai, etc.). There was a recent hike in price of $1.00 but what can you do? 'errbody needs to make a living. The staff are always friendly and service is both fast and efficient. On our most recent trip, we ordered and received our food in less than 10 minutes. Ridiculous. *** Very important (hence the asterisks) - if you want spicy, make sure you ask for it (three options: 2 (spicy), 3 (hot) and 4 (very hot)). First time, we forgot to tell them so while all the food was very flavourful, it lacked in the heat department. We could probably just blame this on Bbop with his pale, white skin and the staff taking pity on him and having no faith in his eating abilities. Second time around, we ditched him and made sure to get the 4 star experience. The staff didn't believe we could handle the heat because they checked with us twice to make sure we wanted very hot. If you like spicy, do it. It's actually not that hot - you can still taste all the flavours but you'll get lingering bit of heat with each bite. Still nowhere near as hot as what I've had in Thailand. - Veggie spring rolls and lemongrass soup - a nice little appetizer to start our meal off. The lemongrass soup is delicious - you can really taste the lemongrass flavour, just don't eat the lemongrass piece that they usually leave in it. - Thai hot basil beef (#8) - stir fried beef with garlic, chili, mushroom, carrot, green pepper, red pepper and basil leaves. The beef was tender and moist, soaking up all the juiciness from the sauce. - Stir fried eggplant (#20) - stir fried eggplant with garlic, carrot, red pepper, basil leaves and vegetarian sauce. Eggplant is one of my favourite vegetables so I decided to try out Numchok's take on it for the first time. Really tasty and the eggplant along with all the other vegetables were cooked perfectly. - Coconut rice ($1.00 extra) - nice presentation. The coconut rice was light, fluffy and fragrant. You'll eat this up easy. On a previous lunch, we had the pad thai tofu (#18) and green curry chicken (#3) which is easily one of their best dishes. The pad thai is well balanced and not overly sweet, which I am not a fan of when that happens. The green curry is a staple and seriously, you can never go wrong with ordering it. Overall, Numchok Wilai continues to deliver and is one of my favourite spots in the city to grab Thai food. If you haven't been yet, goooooooooooooo.

I always used to want to try Numchok Wilai but wasn't often nearby. Now that I work across the street I've been three times and have been happy each time! The restaurant is spacious and very clean. I love the way it is decorated simply, yet elegantly at the same time, with golden statues and wall hangings. Twice I've had the absolute cutest waitress - so polite and always smiling, asking if everything is alright and filling up water. All of the staff are friendly and happy, but she is just the best. I've had the Pa-Nang Shrimp ($13.95), Green Curry Chicken ($11.95) and Stir Fried Lemongrass with beef ($11.95), as well as bites of Cashew Chicken, and the veggie spring rolls. Rice costs extra - $1.50 for steamed rice, $1.95 for coconut rice. Everything always tastes fresh and comes out hot. The flavours are nice and the portions are perfect. The leftovers are really good the next day, too. One of the best things about this restaurant is the daily lunch special. A limited selection of items from the dinner menu all priced lower at $9.95, plus a small bowl of lemongrass soup, two spring rolls and rice! An amazing deal for sure.

Shrimp Pad Thai and coconut rice

I first was recommend to eat their food from their food truck at the Folk Festival. Delicious. Had me dreaming about the wonderful flavors so I just knew I had to visit their restaurant. Easy to find on 124 St. I had family in town and we went for a later dinner. Only 4 other groups when we arrived so lots of space. Service was efficient and they answered my questions. Again, I was very happy with my meal. The special was Panang Chicken which everyone loved. We had the shrimp Pad Thai which was also very yummy but I think I'll go vegetarian next time for the added crunch. We added some coconut rice and fresh spring rolls. To stuffed for dessert. This will be a family

Some of the best Thai food in Edmonton. The green curry and coconut rice is simply scrumptious. I cannot say enough good things about it!

The tofu green curry with coconut rice for the lunch special is the tastiest in Edmonton. Simply fabulous. I went for lunch and found the specials to be really reasonable: $13.95 including spring rolls and a delicious sweet and sour soup. I stumbled across this place and it was just so I took that as a good sign. I was so surprised I hadn't heard of it before because it was delicious. I had the tofu green curry with coconut rice and I can't wait to go back.

It's also generally quiet enough to have a nice conversation, if you're a talker like me. The service was quick and friendly, and they were very good at reccomending dishes! We found this particularly helpful for choosing what meat/protein to put in our meals, and we all agreed that they knew what was best. As for the food, it was the most absolutely wonderful and authentic Thai I have ever had. Every dish was flavourful, fairly priced, and came in a huge portion! We have never gotten a single bad thing there (and we experiment often), and we have never left without takeout containers full to the brim. The leftovers are always amazing, too. I could go on and on about how much I love this restaurant, truly. What a lovely place to dine in St Albert that I wish I had discovered so much sooner! If you're interested in what to try, my favourites are the Pad Thai with chicken, or the Pad See Eiw with chicken or tofu. I'm not a beef lover, but they make it quite well there I will say. The curries are quite good but some of them get fairly spicy, at least for me. The peanut curry is definitely my favourite! As for appetizers, they have these excellent deep-fried crab and cream cheese dumplings that I can never get enough of! Be aware though, there are lots of peanuts used in recipes, so be careful if you have an allergy.

Tried this place twice about a month apart, the food is great but there's inconsistent portions and service can a bit slow as it's a mom & pop restaurant. Seating arrangements are ok but can definitely could use a deep clean/upgrade - old time hole in the wall look, feel & vibe. During our latest visit, the restaurant opened up a few minutes late as owners were running a bit late. Service was slower as there was only one person attending 6+ tables that came in about the same time. The food tasted great but again was inconsistent with portions & plating. We both ordered the same Pad Thai Tom yum at the same time & one plate completely was missing mushrooms & lacked bean sprouts while the other had an abundance. The rice curry dishes are good but could use a much bigger portion of rice.

Service was great, very attentive crew. The restaurant is tastefully decorated, no gaudy or cheesy decor. Small , quaint restaurant (I think seating for about 40-ish). We got there shortly before 2pm, was seated right away. It looks like they close at 230 (Sunday) and then reopen at 4 for dinner service. The server did come around before 2pm to ask if there's anything else that we want to order before they shut the kitchen. We appreciated that. Highly recommend them. We will definitely come back and I'll try the salmon Penang curry next time!

I think I'll order a whole cake of this next time I attend a special event. I'll definitely be back to try more items in the future. But there it was, this bright green little gem. Their broth was good too - we tried the satay & tom yum and both were flavourful. They've been open under the same management for 11+ years! Covid has been tough - they closed completely when dine in was shut down and are just starting to rebuild business (I don't think they do take out but I'm not 100%). It was completely dead when we were there, minus one other table - and they still kept filling the food with fresh items. They kind of fall under the radar, maybe because they're not as flashy as other places? But they are yummy with super nice people - if you're considering hotpot, it's worth checking out! A few things to note: it's one of the cheaper AYCE hotpots in the city (I think it was $26 + $2 for broth - other places are $35-40). AYCE only. No late night or lunch special, the price is the price all day. Cash or debit only.
