I was excited to try this place due to the great Yelp reviews, but I have to say: was underwhelmed. I was concerned that the wait times were almost non-existent -- almost like fast food. That made me uneasy. What of the quality of the food? Just okay at best. It wasn't bad in the least, but I suppose it wasn't what I expected. The green chicken curry I ordered was a lot "soupier" than I am used to, and it looked -- dare I say? -- bland with just bamboo shoots and barely there other veggies. In other Thai places in the city, the green curry is much thicker and brimming with a variety of veggies including mushrooms, giant bell pepper slices and exotic eggplant. This seemed relatively anemic in comparison. I did enjoy the stir fried pork with the garlic pieces, and that was the highlight of my meal. My husband, a giant Tom Yum fan, was gravely disappointed in his bowl. I tasted it, and it was fine to me, but I agree -- it wasn't our favourite, either. Still, the food WAS tasty, just not worth four or five stars, in my opinion. Interior is clean and pretty, service is fast and friendly, but no one came by to ask how our meal was or to top off our water. Don't think I'll be rushing to get back. read more

I had such high hopes for this restaurant based on the amazing reviews. Don't get me wrong, my meal was good, but I'm not sure I could give it 5 stars or say it's the best Thai food in Edmonton. The restaurant itself is pretty nondescript from the outside. It's on a great street, though! There is parking behind the restaurant off the alley, with a back entrance which is convenient and much appreciated as the temperature drops (and drops and drops). Inside, the decor is your typical Canadian-Asian style. The tables are nicely spread apart so you are able to enjoy your meal and conversation without your neighbour too close. I had the Penang curry, which really was good. However, it's no better than most places I've been, and doesn't rank #1 for me in Edmonton. My dining partner had a fried chicken dish, which he described as bland. It was probably just a poor choice in a restaurant with such a wide variety of curries and rice dishes. I can't complain about the service or the prices. Overall, the meal was good, but not great. I'd go back because it's close to home and there are many more dishes to try. Perhaps my fellow Yelpers just set my expectations too high! read more

Finally I got to go to this little place, I was looking forward to it. I will say first and foremost the staff are incredibely awesome :) The food was tasty and I loved the lunch specials! However I thought it would be spicy and it was not at all. I had to order some hot sauce (red sauce, sriracha), as it was not even a tad bit spicy. Came here based on the reviews. Sorry to say I was disappointed. Spring roll was soggy inside, lacked flavor and the included sauce didn't help. Lemongrass soup was good - albeit only contains mushroom. Thai iced tea was too sweet. Red curry chicken was sweet rather than hot. Something didn't taste right with that (it's curry). Pad Thai was soggy and didn't taste like regular Pad Thai. Lastly the mango with black sticky rice. Sticky rice was too sweet - they had incorporated the condensed milk into it so there's no way to adjust the sweetness. Then the mango itself was sour - not ripe enough. read more

Question for all those who recommended this restaurant... why? Why did you like this place? Was it the burnt oil used to mix the stir fry? The chewy, unpleasant chunks of mystery seafood? Or perhaps the stale dry rice? I will never understand why anyone likes this place. I joked about it being unsafe to eat chicken out of a stir fry with raw mushrooms and onions. Just cause the vegetables are raw doesn't mean the meat would be undercooked, right? Wrong! Three hours later and I cannot be more than a few feet from a washroom. I will never go back. This was my experience here: We sat down. We ordered our food. Our food arrived. Naturally we started to dish it out onto our plates. As we were eating the server came along, said one of our plates was the wrong dish and removed it from our table. The dish that was removed was still pretty full and didn't really look 'touched.' I saw her walk into the kitchen with it and less than 30 seconds later walk back out to drop an identical dish onto another table. Now, maybe that was enough time to throw our plate away and pick up another one? Or maybe it was enough time to throw some garnish onto our place and take it back out to another? I am not sure and will never know. Every dish we had was terrible. The seafood in the noodles was very chewy and tasted old. The rice was not fresh. The stir fry was unevenly cooked. The only edible dish we were served was the tom yum soup. This was by far the absolute worst Thai food I have eaten in my life. I have never been to Thailand but, I have eaten at dozens of places across the Canada and this was nothing short of awful. read more

This is my fave spot for Thai in Edmonton. Don't let the old school decor deter you. It's completely outdated, but the green Thai curry over coconut rice completely makes up for it. Totally reasonable prices too. Last year, if you visited them at Taste of Edmonton, this was not their finest work. Try the pad Thai again at the restaurant. So much better! You'll forgive them for the sad ToE attempt. As for busy or dead, it's a crapshoot. I've seen both. Maybe worth a reso...? Parking on 124th street in front. If that's full, take a right (east) at the Popeyes and then another right into the alley. There is parking out back. read more

Had a great lunch here today! I had the Red Tofu Curry and my brother had the Green Curry with Beef and Eggplant. Both were very fresh tasting and nicely spiced. Lunch special included 2 spring rolls and small cup of soup plus rice and the curry for under $14. I would definitely eat here again! 4.5 stars read more

After falling in love with local food while on vacation in Thailand, husband and I have been on a hunt for good authentic Thai restaurants in Edmonton. Numchok Wilai may just be the place. I wouldn't call the food mind-blowing but it is definitely tasty and authentic. We have tried spring rolls, tom yum, pa-nang shrimp and pad khing (with chicken). Everything was good: tasty and flavorful. Shrimp in pa-nang and chicken in pad khing were in abundance. Tom yum could have been better though. I felt that it lacked something - I can't quite put a finger on it. I could locate all usual ingredients that go into this magnificent soup: kaffir leaves, lemongrass, galangal...and yet, it lacked certain oomph. Tom yum served in Thailand spoiled me for life, I guess:) The hunt for perfect tom yum in Edmonton continues... I'll be back to Numchok Wilai to try more menu items, though. For sure! A great place to grab some quick Thai in Edmonton. It's definitely in my top 3. In regards to their food: their yellow curry is so amazing. It isn't too thick and has the right amount of spice. This is a fantastic place for Thai food in Edmonton. We are so glad we found it! It is a very nondescript restaurant on 124 street, but don't let that fool you. The interior is nothing fancy, but the food is so darn good. "E" is an expert when it comes to Pad Thai. She has been lucky to eat it on many continents and places this particular version near the top of her list. "D" had fried chicken, which was wonderful. It was very moist, cooked just right, and the portion was very large. I could not eat it all, and my plate cleaner "E" could not finish it off! The prices were very fair. The food is very well presented and prepared, as well as being fresh. Service was excellent. It was not packed, but there was a fairly steady stream of people coming in to dine, leaving, and being replaced with some new customers. We will certainly be back. We have eaten at a lot of Thai places in Edmonton and this one has to be the best to date. read more

Ok, having been to Thailand I am always in search of that authentic tasting Thai Food! THIS IS IT! I love this little gem! The food is fresh and simply amazing! The pad thai is soooo good! It's decently priced as well! It appears to be family owned! The service is speedy and friendly as well, especially if you get talking about Thailand with them. They have a great selection on the menu. I would recommend for dinner or lunch as the price and food are consistent! If it were closer to my condo I would eat there everyday! My cousin and I found this place underwhelming at best. We ordered some deep fried porky wonton appetizers, a pad thai and a pad sieu. The sauce that came with the wonton appy was too watery to adhere to the dumplings- I think a thicker sauce would have worked better. The pad thai and pad sieu was severely under flavoured- I think the pad thai needs something that makes it taste more distinctly tamarind and the pad sieu was quite dry and not very saucy. I found it peculiar that the restaurant was so packed... I liked Syphay and Boualouang much better even though they are in sketchier Chinatown. I highly recommend making the trip for more flavourful food. read more

I was looking for something new in town. Something tasty and reasonable in a normal price range 20.00 or so per person. Voila, SEE magazine had a review of this restaurant. I was surprised to hear that it had also been selected for the Where to Eat in Canada review guide. The food is remarkable, of course the satay is delicious, the two soups we ordered, one a coconut, the other a seafood hot and sour were also very spicy and full of complex flavours, The green curry was superb as was the mango salad. Just thinking back on the meal makes me want to run over and pick up something to snack on. Mmmmm I went there my second time yesterday. I ordered spicy seefood basil noodle, the amount of seafood was pretty surprising and I was happy with the flavor. My friend ordered a stir fry veggie plate with tofo and bean sprouts. Honestly, for that amount and the materials, it was way overpriced. We also ordered deep fried shrimps, which I really like. But still, I felt that it was overpriced (8 shrimps for $10). Anyhow, I wasn't as satisfied as the first time I was there. Hope they can make more exceptional dishes in the future. read more

Amazing Thai restaurant - probably the best we've had so far. Nice thing about this particular place is that they don't make every single dish on the menu sweet, like most Thai restaurants. Loved the coconut rice - if you're not sure whether to get regular rice or coconut rice, don't think too much; go for the latter :) Numchok is probably the place we miss most in Edmonton. When we find time next, we're planning to visit the city just to give ourselves an excuse to go here again! If this place is too far off for you, find the time to go. I have never had Thai food before and really wanted to try it and this place had good reviews so I tried and my god was it ever delicious!!! The portions are perfect, staff is very friendly they treat you like your a regular. I will definitely come back and highly recommend this place!! I LOVE their Pad Thai it's delicious and I often crave it. If they were closer to my place I'd be there all the time. The service is good, the quality is good. The only thing I didn't like here was a sticky or gluey rice, something like that. It was served in a unique container but the rice itself was super dense and not really to my liking. The lunch special at Numchok is a deal! $10.95 gets you a bowl of tasty lemongrass and mushroom soup, two spring rolls with a sweet dipping sauce, rice and one of about 15 entrees to choose from. We had the green curry beef, pad Thai, and sweet and sour pork. The green curry is perfect- not to spicy, a little sweet, with lots of eggplant. The pad Thai could use a touch more chicken or shrimp but the sauce is so yummy that it makes up for it. The sweet and sour pork was served with refreshing cucumbers. The food came out quickly, and was hot and tasty. Yum! The dutchess bake shop is only a few blocks away if you have time for dessert but you don't need it because you will leave nomchuck with a full belly. read more

We've been searching for a good Thai restaurant in Edmonton since we left the Bay Area (California). Even though we tried all the ones our friends recommended (Syphay, Bua Thai, Viphalay, Boualouang, King and I), Numchok Wilai is the best. Just when I was loosing hope that we would ever find a good one. The seafood soup was really flavourful, not just spicy. The mango salad was delicious, reminded me of how a Thai friend use to make it. The curry and pad tai were also really good. I usually use the pad tai as my benchmark at every Thai restaurant. All the other restaurants make it too sweet and saucy, which may appeal to some folks, but is not really authentic. This place makes it with tamarind flavour...as it should be. So if you like the pad tai at the other restaurants I listed above you may not like this place, but this is the real deal. read more

This place is a gem. As a native Calgarian who has recently moved to Edmonton, I was on a hunt to find authentic Thai food. What I found, iis that not only is this better than any Thai restaurant in Calgary, but it's the most authentic Thai food I have had outside of Thailand, where I have traveled to on several occasions. My significant other and I LOVE Numchok Wilai, and have taken several of our friends here, who have resoundingly agreed with our assessment. Their green mango salad is a perfect balance of sweet, sour and spice. Their Pla Ra Plik (fried whole pomfret) takes me back to seafood restaurants in Phuket. The Thai basil with seafood has a generous helping of seafood, and although not truly a Thai dish, the stuffed chicken wings are delicious. As an extra bonus, their prices are extremely reasonable for their portion sizes. Thai food tends to be served in relatively small serving dishes for customers to share in a family-style manner. Numchok Wiliai's serving dishes, though small, are at least almost double the size of Viphalay (a very popular Thai restaurant in Edmonton), and their prices lower as well! To top it off, the owners are extremely sweet and polite. Service is efficient and fast without being overbearing. I'm not sure why this place is not teeming with people each night. Perhaps the odd name turns people off, but truly it is a gem. read more
