This is a great place for newbies to go for hotpot. It is clean, and the staff are really good at explaining on how the menu works and what the protocal is for hot pot. They also kept checking on us and seeing that our water glasses are full. The other thing that I like about this place is that each person gets individaul pots so there is no need to argue with your spouse on which one to try. Basically you pick a broth (some are plain Jane and some are super spicy) and then you pick which things you would like to cook in your broth. Keep in mind it is not all you can eat, so these prices can sneak up if you get greedy and order a bunch of things. I find myself, that 2 meats, one dumpling or tofu and one veggie is enough. For my hubby it would 5 meats. There is also a great sauce bar where you can try combinations of things to dip your food in. I myself love the fresh garlic/ginger/soya sauce with a bit of hot sauce. It is a fun date night or girls night or family night. Very interactive. Kids can't be on their phones if they are cooking their meat

Full disclosure: My experience with hot pot has been minimal up to this point. I've been a handful of times but somehow never felt as if I'd really gotten into it. So when I decided to visit 97 Hot Pot I was feeling admittedly intimidated and as if I would surely be "doing it wrong." But how else can we learn if we don't try? Hot pot is of Chinese origins where a literal "hot pot" of flavourful broth is brought to a boil and left simmering for the duration of the meal. Raw ingredients, such as meat and vegetables, are placed into the simmering broth and cooked. It's actually very similar to the Swiss concept of fondue. When 97 Hot Pot appeared on the Edmonton Food Faves We Crave 2022 list as a Favourite Comfort Food, I knew that it was time for me to finally dig into this beloved cuisine. 97 Hot Pot is located on 97th Street in Chinatown (the name is not a coincidence) in McCauley. It's hard to miss the distinctive signage with red stripes and yellow lettering right on the corner. Inside, the large open dining room is filled with rows and rows of tables - the dining capacity is huge. The most notable aspect of the space is that each and every table is outfitted with a heating element at every seat. These special tables facilitate the entire hot pot experience. The walls are mint green and there are some cute Chinese decorations here and there. The menu is extensive and can feel overwhelming, with many different sections of food and seemingly one hundred options. To add to this, there is also a piece of paper and a pen on each table which is to be used to mark down your selections. This part is actually quite fun! The food is considered all-you-can-eat and for $32.95 you are free to feast until your heart is content for a maximum of two hours. The appetizer section (which isn't hot pot) is also included in this price - if you want to order 12 spring rolls, you can. I feel that this is actually quite an amazing deal given the absolute multitude of options. However, to avoid food wastage you will be charged extra if you order a ton of food that you don't intend to eat. The first thing to figure out is your soup base. This decision is key because the broth is the most important part of the entire meal. Each person gets to pick their own, because again, each person has their very own element right in front of them. There are at least 15 types to choose from, from Chinese herbal, to thousand egg and tofu, to aweto blossom. (I didn't know what half of these were either.) I decided to go for the Tom Yum Kung ($2.00 extra) because I enjoy a bit of spice. Although the Szechuan Spicy Chicken was a near second. It took no time at all before the bubbling pots of broth arrived and were placed on the elements before us. The pots are sunken into the table which makes it easier to avoid touching hot surfaces. Each person also has a small control panel to manage the heat in their pot - turning it up to 5 results in a hard rolling boil, while a 2 or 3 seemed to maintain a nice amount of simmer. I liked that each person gets to choose their own broth and it's not a sharing situation for everyone at the table - not everyone has the same tastes! On the other hand, the entire experience felt extremely communal and sharing a meal like this with others seemed to play a major role in the overall feast. It didn't take me long to notice that the menu has marked some of the items as "chef's recommendations." As someone who didn't exactly know what I was doing, I used this as a helpful guide. My general rule of thumb is to order at least one item from each section. The menu includes; meat & poultry, fresh meat and seafood mash, seafood, tofu & noodles, meatballs, and vegetables. As I mentioned earlier, there are cold plates, appetizers, and dessert as well but I personally didn't see how I would have any extra room to eat any of those things. We went though the entire menu (which took some time!) and checked off each of the items that appealed to us on our piece of paper. We ordered at least 25 different items. Our server took our paper away and the chorus of food items began to arrive in no time at all. A trolley cart was placed at the end of our table to house the extra plates that there wasn't any room for. Another aspect of note is that there is a sauce bar at the back of the room that must be visited. Here, you are able to fill little trays with various sauces and toppings which you can use with the rest of your meal. I loaded up on chopped peanuts, OX sauce, sesame sauce, and sriracha. Where to begin??! Well. It all begins and ends with the broth. As with all Asian broth-based soups, the broth is king. The broth is where the magic happens. I'm not sure why I would have expected any less, but the Tom Yum Kung broth was an absolute dream. Big, bold depth of flavour with the perfect amount of heat. I was pretty blown away by the clear attention to detail in creating this stunning broth. The soup wasn't only liquid either, each one

This is one of my go to spots for hot pot! I love that they are individual pots, not the communal styles like at other places. Central location makes it easy to meet at if people are coming from different parts of town. I have only been here for the lunch special, but it's always been great service and clean inside. The disclaimer, if you don't like the food, it's sort of your fault since you cook it yourself. Lol lots of options for sauce. Been here many times and they are pretty consistent.

Sauces from sauce station-so many yummy options and great to make your own combinations

I tried hot pot years ago and this was our first time trying it again! I appreciated how helpful and kind the servers were. Excellent explanations and help as we needed it! The restaurant is clean and comfortable. I love that each seat has their own hot pot station. We brought my son and his bestie. We tried a number of things and that was so fun. I like ordering a bit at a time. Reading previous reviews we were cautious in amounts we ordered but for us, we could have ordered more initially. However you can always get more so no big deal! We came in on a Friday night so it was busy!! Everyone was working hard but we did have to wait for a lot of things and it seemed like there was a mix up with broths and who had what at tables. So please be patient and it will be worth it!

I've been here multiple times for lunch and leave satisfied everytime. Their lunch menu is reasonably priced at $15.95 for 6 items. They are comparable to the other hot pot competitors and their prices are on the lower end. Food is what is expected at a typical hot pot restaurant. A good selection of broths and items to choose from. I would recommend to order at least some of these items if you've never tried hot pot before: sliced lamb, sliced beef, sliced pork belly, baby bok choy and fish mash. They wont disappoint. If you want a lot of veggies, pick the assorted veggie item. It gives you a gigantic amount of veggies. Even though their selection of sauces are less compared to some other hot pot restaurants, they still have the main selection of sauces you'll find at typcial hot pot place. If you never have tried XO sauce before, I highly recommend you try it. It's a seafood sauce that goes really well with the food! Place was clean and service was friendly and quick.

Very clear labelling - 2 thumbs up!

Decided to try out 97 Hot Pot to celebrate my 9 year old niece's birthday this past weekend thanks to the lovely recommendations of fellow Yelpers! This was my second go at Hot Pot and most definitely a success! The staff here were friendly, helpful, and totally patient with us. Glad we made our rather large group reservation for 5pm because by 6pm the restaurant was packed! It really was delicious and everyone in the family found items they loved and all agreed they would most definitely come back again. Highlights for me include the squid (cook it less than a minute or it will be rubbery), pork wontons (with chili oil and garlic), and the mussels! Next time, I'm totally going to try some of the mashems but we were STUFFED. Kids loved the long plain donuts that are good to then dip in sugar. The sauce bar had tons of options though I would like crushed peanuts or a fairly plain peanut sauce as an option. I love the sides available on the dinner menu - the kim chi, the pickled veggies (to die for - carrots and a white veg), seaweed salad, Hmm... I could go for a big bowl right now! Price wise - Ouch. + $100 for 2 adults, 2 kids (9 & 6 yrs). We could eat at the Keg for less than that or enjoy a dinner at Corso 32 or Rostizado's and for a place where I'm cooking my own food, $100 felt steep.

Tom yung soup, rice cake, beef ball, chinese donut, hand pressed cucumber (SO GOOD), sliced porkbelly and rice

Very good food. Good price. Clean. What else to say. Attentive employees, they were checking in frequently to see if we wanted more water/ to buy drinks/ if the food was good.

Ohmygawd! This place is amazing! We had a group of 6 and got there just before it got busy. I recommend getting there before the rush! We arrived at 6. I had the Szechwan pot and it was sooo spicy. The bok choy, onion cakes, marble and sirloin steak were so good! Hello! There's a sauce bar and it is what dreams are made of! There was some parking in the back. Great place for groups!!

Lunch hot pot ($11.95) - Chinese lai fun noodles

97 Hot Pot is easy to spot. Just look for the red and yellow bright sign. I've only been once previously for dinner ($26.95/person) but enjoyed it thoroughly. The fam jam wanted something different to eat so I suggested we go for hot pot. Best of all, it's only $11.95/person for lunch! The interior is clean with white on white on white (walls/flooring) and super soft chairs for you to eat in comfort. The place was really busy for a Sunday afternoon and there was even a small lineup throughout our meal. Guess the lunch deal is just too good to miss. The menu is straightforward. Front page is hot pot and back page is pho/other noodle soups (WHAAAAAT?) How it works. Pick your soup base (5 options), entrees/dishes (25 options) which include a variety of sliced meat, handmade mashes, balls, dumplings and noodles and lastly, you get a nice mixed bowl of vegetables. I had no clue 97 Hot Pot had pho and BBH but several people were ordering them. Now I'm curious how they stack up? I'll never know though. Why come to a hot pot place for anything other than hot pot? Step 1. Pick soup broth. I went with the tom yum kung, which was slightly spicy. My sis's looked spicier (Szechuan spicy chicken). Step 2. Pick 5 dishes. I went with sliced chicken, Korean squid tentacles, pork wontons and sliced pork. I also picked Chinese lai fun noodles but my sis's glass noodles looked better. Oh well, there's always next time. Step 3. Mixed vegetable bowl. A nice variety of brocolli, enoki mushroom, corn, tomato, carrot, green cabbage and some other Asian greens. Nice. Step 4. Eat. We were stuffed by the time we finished all of our food. This is how hot pot should be. Five items is the perfect amount to fill you up without over stuffing yourself (a la AYCE dinner style). Lunch hot pot is the only way to go now that I've discovered it. Might be my new fav hot pot place in town.

We decided to try this place on a cold Saturday evening. We came around 6, as I always like to beat the rush. It was surprisingly slow at that time. Even at 730 when we left, it was still fairly empty. My guess, Liuyishou down the street. This is an AYCE hot pot, so make sure to bring your appetite! We tried half/half broth. I had the curry/chicken, and my husband had mushroom/chicken. I found the mushroom broth to be the best. The meat and veggie selections were great, but we didn't get everything we ordered and had to get it with the next order. For me, I found the sauce station to be lacking. I'm a fan of peanut sauce, which they didn't have. The staff were friendly and attentive. This is a good place for AYCE if you are ever in Chinatown.

This is my go to place to detox from a night of drinking. The place is definitely more social for my friends and I. Their lunch special at $14.95 is the best deal! Choosing 5 items to have so just enough. I normally get the Szechuan spicy chicken soup base. It does come with 3 chilli peppers, so if you don't like spicy food I'd recommend taking at least 2 peppers out. I steer towards the seafood selection they have. If you're ever sick... this is the place to go! Cleans up your sinuses just right. Best advice I've ever received for any hot pot, is to wear not so nice clothes. The ones you don't mind getting smelly. Just think about it... a room where there's so much aroma from different soups cooking. It really sticks to your clothes. Going in the winter? Don't bring your jacket in. Ladies - just bring your card or cash. Don't want to risk your purse smelling like food either.

    Cooking at the table!

I visited 97 Hot Pot earlier this week with a mild hangover in tow. A friend and I had hoped to go to another place in Chinatown for lunch, but it was closed, so no grease for us. Neither of us had tried 97 Hot Pot before, and we admitted to each other we'd been avoiding it somewhat because we thought it would just be soup. Oh, how wrong we were! We needed a bit of hand holding, this being our first time at a hot pot restaurant, but we quickly got the swing of things. First, you pick a soup base (friend got regular chicken, and I got the nice and spicy Sichuan chicken). Second, you pick five items to add to it (this is at lunch; at dinner, it's all you can eat, with a ton more offerings and a heftier price tag). You simply fill out your sheet of paper with your choices and give it to the server. While you're waiting for them to assemble your order in the back, you hop up and get condiments from a well-stocked sauce bar (mutual favourites were the chive sauce, the sesame sauce, and the ginger sauce). Since you do the cooking at the table, everything is brought out raw (and in some cases, frozen). And boy, was it quick. My soup base had real spices and chilies floating in it, and I would have happily eaten it on its own because it was so delicious. I also got sliced chicken, meat and cabbage dumplings, pork wontons, shrimp, and udon noodles--and veggies like enoki and button mushrooms, broccoli, and cabbage come without you even having to order them. I had a blast cooking everything right at the table, and when you run low on cooking liquid, a staff member with a pitcher will top you off with some more! By the time I left, I was stuffed to the gills and had completely forgotten I was hungover. Before lunch, I was sure I would go back to bed for a nap, but I felt so great I went on a walk and a bike ride afterwards. So will 97 Hot Pot cure a hangover? More data are needed, but I'm more than willing to give it a try again.

And we also came with a very large group. Honestly they had all the reason to kick us out, but the staff took care of us regardless. Since we were late we just picked the soup broth and 5 add-on's. I got the Herb and Lamb broth. It was delicious, savory, and hearty. And for the add-on's, I picked the sliced Beef Sirloin, Enoki Mushroom, Napa Cabbage, Fried Tofu and Flat Rice Noodles. They didn't have Fried Tofu so I asked to substitute for Fried Bean Curd instead. Looking back at this now, I'm glad (and I'm sure the kitchen was too) that we only picked 5 things. I guess if you only want hot water it's free? But who would do that?? They also have additional items you can add for a cost but we stuck to the AYCE menu. $3.25 for unlimited refills of canned pop or $8.95 for 1 pitcher of their fresh beverages. We ordered a half non-spicy pork bone broth and half house special butter spicy. You can adjust the spice level and although we asked for medium spicy, there was definitely heat to it! Once we put in our order, we went to the small sauce station to make our sauces. Not as many options as other places in town, but did the job. The broth pot came out first - a communal pot for the table, so be aware. Topped with a grill plate over top for your BBQ. The spicy butter was indeed spicy and heavy on the grease. I don't think I'd order it again. The pork was better, but although both had lots of aromatics in them, we both found them to be rather bland. The hot food options were ok. You get 1 order of enoki beef rolls per table, already cooked, and they were tasty. Didn't love the crispy pork. As for the rest, our favourites were the shrimp paste, the hot pot beef, hot pot lamb and quail eggs (already cooked and peeled). Service was incredibly attentive and friendly. The moment we had an empty plate, it was whisked away. No complaints there. Overall, it was about $90 for 2 people before tip and drinking pop. Definitely not a cheap meal. That said, service was great and the ventilation was good where it wasn't stuck to our clothes & hair (often we leave these restaurants smelling like hot pot forever). The novelty is fun with both hot pot & BBQ, but I didn't find the BBQ great. Would be better going to an actual BBQ restaurant for BBQ. For the price, the options are limited compared to other places.

It's not as modern as other places, but the food was fresh and topped up on the buffet + even though not as big as others, there were still a few items I hadn't seen anywhere else. Their broth was good too - we tried the satay & tom yum and both were flavourful. They've been open under the same management for 11+ years! Covid has been tough - they closed completely when dine in was shut down and are just starting to rebuild business (I don't think they do take out but I'm not 100%). It was completely dead when we were there, minus one other table - and they still kept filling the food with fresh items. They kind of fall under the radar, maybe because they're not as flashy as other places? But they are yummy with super nice people - if you're considering hotpot, it's worth checking out! A few things to note: it's one of the cheaper AYCE hotpots in the city (I think it was $26 + $2 for broth - other places are $35-40). AYCE only. No late night or lunch special, the price is the price all day. Cash or debit only.

My favourite restaurant for hot pot! Definitely a gem in the city. I love the satay broth and all…read morethe many options of fish balls and an excellent variety of fresh meats and veggies. In the sauce department the xo and peanut butter sauce is amazing and the chopped chillies in a vinegar like sauce is soo delicious and brings such great flavour to anything that accompanies it. I absolutely love it here, it really has a nice welcoming environment and the manager is very nice as well. I always look forward to my next visit.

This was our first-ever hot pot experience, and Shoo Loong Kan absolutely nailed it…read more We ordered three soup bases -- Tom Yum, pork bone broth, and sukiyaki -- along with a vegetable plate, beef short, and prime ribeye. For drinks, we tried the strawberry coconut milk tea and the dirty brown sugar milk tea, and both were delicious. The food was amazing. I would highly recommend the pork bone broth for first-timers -- it was hands down my favorite. The sukiyaki was also a standout (perfect if you enjoy saltier flavors). The Tom Yum was great if you like spice, but it's more of a specific taste and probably not one I'd personally reorder. The decor is beautiful with subtle cultural touches, and I loved how modern and easy the experience was. They have an online ordering system you can use right from your phone, which made everything super convenient. Bonus: they offer a happy hour deal on the beef short until 3 PM, where it's $2.99 instead of the regular $6 -- such a steal. The service was incredible. The staff brought the food out quickly, and our server took the time to explain everything, which made our first hot pot experience stress-free and enjoyable. Overall, this is an experience you must try. We'll definitely be back!

Wanted to try this place with my girlfriend for her birthday because she never had hot pot before,…read moreK looked up online reviews for this place and heard it's pretty good food wise but at the same time it's expensive for good reason. The place looks really fancy with its atmosphere (aside from the gender neutral bathroom). Mainly writing this review to express the disappointment in service me and my girlfriend had to deal with, we got seated right away with a female server (name Idk of) and this male server named "Jay" (looks Russian) said he was our server today and said to look through the menu and he'll be right back and when we're ready he'll take our orders, dude literally ignores us for like 30mins all the while he's helping the tables near us with simple tasks, this guy has the nerves to look me right in the eyes while I tried waving him down (not once but a couple times) to take our orders and he just continues to either help those other tables or walk away entirely to go talk with his co workers, my girlfriend said lets wait for another couple minutes and I reluctantly agree but only for 10 more minutes. Server "Jay" continues to purposely ignore me and my girlfriend (mind you on her birthday which I wanted to make a special time with) so I take her hand and make us walk out with utter disregard for the place or server "Jay". Service sucks unless you're working class white individuals or Asians. Wrote this specifically so the establishment can make server "Jay" can work on his behaviour for racial equality and avoid anymore embarrassment for their name.
