Seasonal, plant-based food is only getting more popular these days and with good reason. My old favourite restaurant to enjoy this type of dining used to be Noorish Conscious Eatery but since their closing there wasn't anything that quite compared... Until I discovered The Moth. Owned by the same people behind vegetarian mainstay Cafe Mosaics, The Moth opened in The Quarters area of Boyle Street in late 2017. EDify Magazine named them Best Vegan Restaurant 2023 and it was high time for me to experience everything that this beautiful restaurant has to offer. Did I mention that the restaurant is beautiful? Because this place might be the most gorgeous restaurant in all of Edmonton. The dusty rose coloured façade is only the beginning and you'll soon notice the vine-covered patio. Inside, you will not believe your eyes. The exposed wooden ceiling beams are positively draped with pothos vines and the space is exploding with greenery. There are beautiful macramé wall hangings, gorgeous pendant lighting and tile work, plus a feature wall of sage green wall paper with copper metallic birch trees on it. (I love this wall paper - I used the exact same wall paper to decorate my son's bedroom when he was a baby.) The space is light and bright and breezy. It's an urban hippy's paradise. I don't know about you, but this room is entirely my esthetic. You have to see it for yourself. I find it really special that a restaurant of this beauty exists in an area of Edmonton that is often viewed as "less desirable." There are gems to be found in every corner of this city if you are willing to find them. Our upbeat and friendly server took us to a bright table by a window and I was excited to begin exploring the menu. There is an entire page dedicated to beverages that range from coffee, tea lattes, medicinal tea, cold drinks, and alcohol. It all sounds wonderful and I'd really like to buy some of their teas to take home, if possible. All of the mushroom-based drinks sound like magic and of course they've got kombucha on tap. I was happy to find Dieu du Ciel! beer on the menu, my favourite craft brewery in Montreal. In the end I decided to try the Iced Cashew Chai (Chai, cashew, ice blend - $8.00) because it seemed ideal for a hot and sunny day. Decadent and rich, yet cool and refreshing, I loved everything about this drink! Not only did it taste like an amazing chai but the creaminess from the cashew really took the enjoyment to the next level. The topping with bits of rose petal was an excellent touch. Almost too good to not be considered dessert, this drink could easily become a not-so-guilty pleasure. The food menu features all-day breakfast and an entire section dedicated to broth. Broth (especially bone broth) is really hot right now and The Moth is going to capitalize! Except that all of the broths at The Moth are vegan, of course. Every dish on the menu is plant-based and does not contain dairy, eggs, or animal products. There's also a decidedly Asian feeling to much of the menu which I always welcome. I thought that the Banh Mi + Broth was especially cute - the perfect vegan version of soup and a sandwich. I decided to try the Coconut Lime Laksa (Mildly spicy, coconut, almond-based galangal broth with seasonal veggies, vermicelli, and lime - $22.00) because I'm a huge fan of laksa, a spicy noodle soup from Singapore. Admittedly different than the laksas I've had in the past, this one had it's own special story to tell. Delicate and skillfully prepared, the broth was creamy with coconut and packed a big, clean flavour. The vegetables were bright and crisp - I loved the use of brussels sprouts. I especially formed a love affair with the shiitake mushrooms within the broth. They were so flavourful and meaty and they became a big highlight. I almost found the vermicelli noodles unnecessary, as they added little value or flavour to the dish. Overall, this take on laksa was quite lovely and unexpectedly big on aromatic flavours. I couldn't leave without trying some dessert and the PB Chocolate Cupcake ($6.00) was speaking my language. It seemed that many of the desserts were already sold out so I was very happy to hear that this one was still available. Chocolate and peanut butter? Two of my most favourite all-time flavour combos! I really liked the fluffy peanut butter topping with a hardened chocolate drizzle a lot. The chocolate cupcake itself was decent but I did find the edges a bit dry. At the end of the day, I'm never going to be mad about a peanut butter and chocolate anything. The Moth has a really cool waste-reducing program where they will only let you do take-out (or take home leftovers from your meal) if you bring your own reusable containers (BYORe). I think that this is an excellent idea because all of those to-go containers create so much garbage. The Moth is a supremely beautiful space and worth visiting for the atmosphere alone, however the food is very good and the drinks are even more special. I'm an

Got the Coconut Chai Soma tea latte to go. Super excited but I didn't like it. Just my preference as my boyfriend thought it was fine. Glad someone drank it - $7.50!

Oh. My. God. Who knew eating PLANTS could be this satisfying!? I went to check out @themothcafe on Jasper Ave the other day- and holy smokes. Swipe to see the INCREDIBLE decor and atmosphere. It didn't feel like Edmonton. I like to dabble in plant-based meals from time to time, because I think it's just a good thing to do. This chickpea curry was a SHOW STOPPER. If you've followed me for a while, you know spicy food is my jam, but I NEVER trust a menu when it calls something spicy. This was PERFECTION in a bowl. The mix between fruity and spicy was incredible. The heat level was perfect (for me). The server said there had been complaints that it was too hot and they had to take it down a notch. I literally need to go back and try more things on their menu after that curry. My lunch date had Chips n' Shrooms, a vegan take on fish and chips, but with shiitake mushrooms. She also found her meal (brand new to the menu) delicious!!! It's a 5 out of 5 from me... I have another work lunch date coming up in a week and I will definitely be suggesting this spot!

I have been going to The Moth to eat or enjoy a cup of coffee for a couple years, but since new staff started working this summer, I have not had a pleasant experience going their. I feel like they treat me like I am a child and it is belittling. Sometimes I play a little music to myself at a table and it bothers other customers. I get that, but staff is belligerent towards me and I don't feel comfortable giving them any money, nevermind the generous tips I've given in the past. I am through going there. Shout out to Eva and Marissa who I don't include in my dislike of this establishment. I hope changes are in store before they go out of business.

I went here a couple months ago, and WOW! I'm super very impressed by this place. The vegetarian options are GODLY. Absolutely loved the textures and garnishing they used. I'm seriously obsessed. I can't wait until my next visit. They really put attention to detail, and I would like to give special props to the decoration and the atmosphere. It's absolutely perfect! My pictures are a bit horrid but you can see that it's quite nice. If you are thinking about giving the Moth Cafe a visit, then I would urge you to try it out. It's AMAZING!

The Moth Cafe - Vegan Cafe. . 1) Breakfast Burrito (17$) & 2) Mushroom Mocha (6$) . What a lovely cafe. The decor and concept are all amazing. The burrito was delicious and huge. The rest of the food we saw looked unreal as well. Also, they are completely contactless and covid friendly, for anyone wondering. . Food - loveee and would go back. Looks pricy, but big portions and great quality. Mocha- didn't love this and quite pricy. Vibe - 10/10 love. Super cute and unique. . Note: their chai concentrate is amazing also. . Great date spot or gift for your fave vegan/ healthy food lover.

This cafe is beautiful inside! Its decorations are modern and the space is airy and very welcoming. Our food was delicious! I ordered the Pad Thai and my partner had the Not Chicken Burger. I also had the Carrot Cupcake which was to die for! We ordered our food online on our phones and it was brought to our tables. We had the option to pay online or in-store after our meal. Service was great and so was the food. Highly recommend if you're down for vegan food!

I'm back home for the holidays and have been using the time to explore some spots in Edmonton that I haven't tried yet. The Moth was such a pleasant surprise! My bestie and her husband recommended it to me (with my other bestie adding "It's soooo cute!") since I am vegetarian, and the veggie life in Edmonton can be a bit of a challenge. They still wanted to hang with me despite my awful cold, and I used that opportunity to order every healing elixir on the menu! Okay, not quite, but I did order the Lemongrass broth and some time of immunity tea. The Lemongrass broth was like a pho dish, and actually reminded me a lot of the lemongrass soup at Freshii. It was really good and the quantity was huge. Vermicelli noodles, various mystery vegetables, mushrooms, and a touch of faux meat. Not usually a fan of faux meat but this was really well done ... not too much and not pretending too hard to be something it's not. The broth was deliciously spicy but not overwhelming and sure helped cleared my nostrils! My friends ordered a curry dish and a sandwich. Both loved their meals and felt that they were really flavourful and filling. We all got take away boxed, and my soup came in a reusable jar! My tea was meant to be some type of healing tea ... it smelled and tasted like hay but that was fine with me. It was earthy! And I did wake up feeling better the next day so maybe it worked? Overall, The Moth is a great visit on a downtown Edmonton food crawl and the decor was super cute too! Will definitely be back!

Very shocked and disappointed they sent out a burnt bun with their burger. Considering a bun would not cost much at all, I would expect them to have replace it if it was burnt as badly as it was. I reached out to them directly with this issue (before posting this public review) and recieved no response. Will not be dining here again, nor will I recommend it.

So, I've been vegan for a while, previously vegetarian. I've gotten more so into cooking since I've become vegan so I find myself looking for the best vegan restaurants and critiquing them like I'm Gordon Ramsey or something. I started my meal with the bulletproof, which is espresso blended with coconut oil. Personally, I don't have much experience with coconut oil as I don't purchase it because of it's high price, and because there are alternatives. However, I loved this coffee but I felt compelled to get the macadamia milk and maple syrup for some reason which just ruined it. I ended up spending $6.50 on the drink which I ruined after two sips. Lesson learned! One thing about me is that I find it extremely difficult to choose what I want to eat when the menu has so many options and a benefit to becoming vegetarian (and later on vegan) was that it made choices much easier when eating at different establishments with few vegetarian/vegan options. A year ago my girlfriend also went vegan and as such we eat out almost only at vegan restaurants. Thankfully she has an eye for what she wants and so I leaned on her for help. Since our last few visits to the US she discovered real Mexican food and just fell in love, but since then nothing has come close to the taste that she experienced down there. It's become harder to find that taste even among most Mexican vegan food. I figured, however, to give the enchiladas a try so that she can also experience it also while she ordered the tofu scramble. Safe to say if it's not Mexican people making it then it's not going to taste very Mexican either. (The jury is still out on whether Mexicans can make good Mexican vegan.) My enchilada went cold super fast, my bread was way too thick and the contents didn't really have much flavour. I could say I was very disappointed but I'm not super picky. I was full with what I had eaten, although I must say I couldn't get enough of the salad. It was super simple with just a seasoning of salt and pepper but it did the trick. With regards to my partners breakfast (tofu scramble with a side of hollandaise) the hollandaise took a couple of tastes but it grew on us. The bowl itself was just okay; there was really nothing special about it. The rice was a surprise, buried under everything else, so it made the dish seem bipolar. The first part was mainly a tofu dish and the second half was a rice dish. The vegan sausage was sliced and scarce in the dish so you couldn't really get a taste for it. Would she recommend it? No. To compliment our breakfast we ordered a side of spicy potato hash which, overall, was probably the best dish. The corn was a nice addition to the hash but the skins of the kernels would wedge themselves between our teeth. The overall experience was as good as any other place we've been to in the city. The cafe is gorgeous, being so open and airy, and I would surely come back for a coffee and dessert to see what the experience is like later in the day. However, I wouldn't necessarily say this place is better or worse than any other vegan spots in Edmonton. By the end I was full, so was my girlfriend. I hope more vegan spots come to Edmonton as the benefits of veganism continue to become more prominent in the mainstream of Canadian food habits. This will surely push restaurants to focus more on the food which is ultimately what I'm looking at. Stop by Moth on a sunny day; you'll be glad you did.

This place is lovely. Tucked away just off 97 st, this is an all vegan restaurant. I have been a few times but this time I was inspired to actually leave a review. The food is always delicious. But I have to say that the big moth burger was the best of the bunch. In addition to the food they also have a large array of alternative lattes and medicinal to use and elixirs. There's also beer, wine and gin. The service is polite although a little sparse. The cool thing is that they enter your order on an iPad so as soon as you order it is sent to the kitchen. I really love how much the servers know about the food. It's not like other cafés where are you ask questions and I can't answer them. Obviously at vegan restaurants it's important to be able to answer questions about the food. You also have to save room for dessert. There's a wide selection of vegan desserts that are to die for. We had the banana cream pie made with coconut cream.

Mojito Mint Kombucha by Tru Buch

Little sister to my long time love Cafe Mosaics, I had high hopes for this little cafe just East of downtown on Jasper Ave. We were in the area on a sunny Sunday and decided to stop for brunch. My fiance and I appreciated the well curated menu with many different options than other vegan or plant based restaurants we have visited. The interior was beautifully designed they have a gorgeous (albeit small) patio out front if you're lucky enough to snag a seat. If not - not to worry, the cafe is filled with lots of natural light and the windows are opened wide on warm days. Service was prompt and the wait staff all looked like they enjoyed their jobs - unlike many restaurants in the city. We ordered the Jackfruit Crab Cakes and Tofu Breakfast Bowl and thoroughly enjoyed both! The jackfruit was so tender and well seasoned. We washed it down with the Mojito Mint Kombucha on tap by Tru Buch which was crisp and refreshing. My partner said we would be back for dinner and when I inquired when, he said tonight. ;) The only downside for us was parking with a truck was a little difficult as the lot is quite small and often full as it shares with Syphay.

It is a lovely atmosphere to catch up with friends. Our server was polite and well mannered. They have a great lunch deal as well. I went with the Spicy Eggplant with coconut rice - Chinese eggplant quartered and stir-fried in a sweet and savory chili sauce. My friend chose this as well. We also started with the Roti Canai -Grilled Indonesian flatbread served with a curry dipping sauce. This is my favourite dish on the menu. I usually order this. Both dishes were excellent and fresh. I love the flakey roti and the dipping sauce has the right amount of curry in it. The eggplant was tasty as well and perfectly cooked. It came with rice (we chose coconut rice for an extra dollar) and a spring roll. The spring roll was crunchy and filled with veggies. All together a great meal.

Everything I tasted was a hit. I loved the crisp and texture of the Chicken Strips, as well as the Lemon Chicken Prawns. The Curry Chicken was flavorful, creamy, and had a little kick from the spice but it was great. The Dendeng was great too, loved the sauce that covered it. I'm also really impressed by the different veggie meats they used in all of the dishes, they all tasted good. Service was fast and all the servers were so thoughtful and accommodating. We also met the owner and he was so kind. We had a good time at the end getting to know each other. From our time here, we were met with very down to earth people here. They've been on quite a turbulent journey to say the least. Die Pie first opened their doors downtown on Jasper Ave in 2017. Then the pandemic hit and threw everything into question and they ended up moving to 97th in the Boyle Street area in 2020. Then, sadly, later in 2020 they announced that Die Pie would be closing it's doors for good. It seemed that everything had come to an unfortunate and heart breaking end. But there was some hope when the pizzas became available at their sister business Seitans in the 5th Street Food Hall in 2021. ...And then in 2023, rising from the ashes, Die Pie opened once again, this time on 105th Street in Queen Mary Park. Nothing short of a roller coaster, I'm not sure how they've done it. However, their legion of devoted fans certainly wants their plant-based pizza revolution to continue. VUE Weekly named Die Pie # 1 Pizza (Classic) 2018 and # 1 Best Pizza (Thin Crust) 2018. Yes, the pizza is meatless but this is a place that can compete with all of the rest. You need to try it for yourself to believe it! I was so pleased to visit for the first time on a Saturday evening and I would totally describe the restaurant and location as "industrial-chic." They've got plenty of space with a fun tropical vibe from the pink-sided bar area to the pink-and-green frond print on the chairs. The best decor item of all, without a question, is the huge original Jasper Ave restaurant sign that now hangs inside. What a testament to their resiliency. There's a little stage area that must be great for live music and other such performances. Speaking of music, the tunes at Die Pie are absolute perfection and I found myself dancing and singing in my seat for the majority of my visit - we must have very similar taste in music. Our server was helpful and friendly, happy to give us the time that we needed to make our way through the extensive menu. There's quite a lot more than just pizza! I'm not much of a pop-drinker but I do enjoy a soda with pizza from time to time. I really like that Die Pie doesn't serve the mainstream brands and instead opts for Jarritos (which I love), Wild Brewing Kombucha, and Phillips Soda Works from Victoria. We chose a Speed King Craft Cola ($5.00) and an Intergalactic Root Beer ($5.00), both from Phillips. The art on the can alone is worth it. I really like a craft cola made with cane sugar a lot. You've probably heard people talk about Mexican cola and how it's a far superior product - and the cane sugar is why. Using cane sugar makes the flavour so much better. Speed King is made with actual kola nut as well as cane sugar, has a rich flavour, and somehow isn't too sweet. The Intergalactic was interesting because it actually tasted like real root beer. The amber colour is not typically expected and the flavour of licorice root, cloves, and cane sugar creates a beverage that tastes much more authentic. They both paired wonderfully with the pizza. The food menu involves a lot! You'll find a whole host of starters, fried chickun (which I believe is Seitans main thing, now available at Die Pie), pasta, and burgers. And of course there is pizza. A lot of pizza. I was excited to start my meal with some Bites (there are four types) which I remember very well from my 5th Street Food Hall visits. This time I chose the Kimchi Bites (Sourdough bites stuffed with chedda, extra virgin olive oil, sunflower parmesan, and housemade kimchi - $16.00) because they sound so unique. However, the chedda, donair, and pickle versions are excellent options as well. These little tender and twirly dough balls are served with two dips of your choice and they've got twelve to select from! Gochujang Dip seemed like an obvious pick and we also got Garlic Aioli Dip for a more cooling option. If you love Die Pie's soft and fluffy pizza dough (and you do) this is just another way to get more of it. Pungent, acidic kimchi is wrapped within the dough like a soft blanket. These bites had some spicy kick! Dip them in the gochujang for an even bigger punch! These are fun and easy to eat. However, if you're also ordering pizza it does mean that your meal will contain a lot of dough (which is not necessarily a bad thing). The main event is absolutely the California style pizza and with 18 different pies you certainly won't be wanting for choice. Each one is made from scratch using their signature hand-tossed sourdough crust which they make with local flour. And let me tell you: IT'S THE CRUST. I'm the type of person who doesn't always eat my crust - in most cases I have no desire to eat additional plain, tough bread. But once in a while there's the odd case when the dough itself is something special. Die Pie makes a dough so pillowy that you will find it in your dreams. But that's not all. On Thursdays they do Detroit style pizza, they can make gluten-

When you think about "vegetarian fare" this will inevitably conjure images of hippy restaurants that serve one type of food (a bowl of vegetables?). Maybe this was once the case but it certainly isn't anymore. I loved the pendant lighting adorning the ceiling that look a bit like lanterns. Some of the tables have very cozy chairs that beckon you to really settle in. I was seated at such a table and enjoyed the casual cafe vibe of it all. Our server was incredibly friendly, delivering plates of food to our table in hardly any time at all. For a beverage I went straight for the Burdock Tea ($2.00) which seemed like the most unique thing to order on the menu apart from the Vietnamese iced coffee. I enjoyed how different this was! This tea was not the typical green-jasmine situation that is normally found at Asian restaurants. I could see the pieces of burdock root steeping in the pot, an ingredient known for its antioxidant properties. The nice earthy flavour was something all its own and very pleasant to drink. The food menu is somewhat concise with only five appetizers and ten entrees to choose from. There is no need for more! I would much prefer that a restaurant does a smaller number of dishes really well, instead of offering way too many without being able to maintain quality. Spring rolls and fresh rolls make key appearances on the appetizer menu, as does a green onion cake (it's the Edmonton way). But I was most excited about the Green Papaya Salad (Green papaya, soy jerky, basil, sriracha sauce, roasted peanuts and fried onions. Served with house soy sauce - $14.00) otherwise known as Goi Du Du. I love a zesty green papaya salad that is full of spice! It would be easy to serve a green papaya salad as a plant-based dish - that's already what it is! But I really liked seeing that An Chay is taking this dish to the next level by using ingredients like soy jerky. I appreciated seeing that they are leaning into what it is that makes their food unique and special. This salad was so fresh and had excellent texture. We poured the house soy sauce over top to kick the flavours up even more. Sweet, savoury, and a hint of spice. I loved the soy jerky most of all because of the wonderful pork floss-like texture. Choosing an entree was easy because the dish that I wanted to try seemed so obvious. It had to be the Vermicelli Special (Vermicelli, tempura, shredded beancurd, spring rolls, shredded lettuce, cucumber, mint leaf, pickled daikon & carrots, red cabbage, roasted peanuts, fried onions. Served with vinaigrette sauce - $17.00) otherwise known as Bun 3 Mau. However, An Chay does offer their own take on pho and their coconut curry sounds wonderful. Plated with an artistic hand, the beauty of this dish with its stunning rainbow of colours was a sight to behold. You eat with your eyes first and this dish couldn't have been more appealing. I poured the tangy vinaigrette over the entire bowl and reveled in the symphony of flavours. I loved the pops of cool freshness from the mint, acidity from the daikon and carrots, and crunch from the peanuts and fried onions. I noticed a delightful coconut flavour that I think was mixed in with the shredded beancurd. One perplexing ingredient was the tempura. I think that "tempura" refers to the pan fried item that looked a bit like SPAM (only it wasn't). I'm not sure what this ingredient was but I loved it (if someone had told me that it was meat I would have believed them). I also absolutely adored the spring rolls (cha gio) because again An Chay took an item that I've had a million times but made it their own. Filled with bean thread noodles, fried beancurd, taro, yam, and mung bean; the ultra crispy exterior almost reminded me of a frie
