Simpang Asia is a classic for my family. The food is fairly authentic with my personal issues with the chicken satay and the rendang but still the food is delicious. This place is now expanded by taking over the next door area and has plenty of room with modern sensibilities in the decor. The service is pretty average with the food taking a bit of time and even more on busy days which come often with how popular it is. As for the food, since this type is home to me, it's hard to describe. Fried rice is authentic and delicious, nice savory taste. I would say that the spice levels are quite insane, even for a spice-lover like me. I would never go past medium since it just drowns out the taste. Festival rice is a perfect starting point with many of the different dishes in Indonesia being on the plate. It comes with rendang, a savory coconut milk stewed meat, chicken satay, yellow (tumeric) rice, crunchy nuts, balado egg (hardboiled egg covered in sambal), and shredded egg. The shredded egg is the weakest followed by balado egg with the rest scrumptious. Nasi bunkus (package rice) comes with white rice, rendang, stewed chicken leg, balado egg, and veggies akin to collard greens. The stewed chicken leg has never been my favorite even at other restaurants, and the veggies are good enough. All in all, if I had to recommend something for a first visit it would be the festival rice. read more

Simpang opened a second location in Venice and it's beautiful! Open, airy and modern looking with plenty of seating and a gorgeous bar. Parking was much more manageable at this location because they've got parking in both the front and the back. Service was superb as always and they got our food to us super quickly. AYAM GORENG KUNING: The most amazing tumeric chicken with a delicious spicy-sweet sauce!! Plated up with a heaping side of white rice. I loved this dish!! Glad to have tried this spot but it was not my favorite! I think this is a good option for Indonesian food on the westside but I can think of quite a few that I liked a lot more in the LA area. Came with some friends and we all shared the festival rice, mie tek tek, and roti paratha. Nothing was bad, but I found all the dishes to be quite standard. I thought the roti could have been flakier and the dipping sauce a hint sweeter. The mie tek tek was fine and the festival rice was good but I didn't feel like all the components had the contrast of flavors as I've had elsewhere. This was my first time at an Indonesian restaurant. I was pleasantly surprised at all the unique flavors. We ordered the mie tek tek, nasi goreng, kwetiang goreng, roti, and chicken wings. The roti was one of my favorite dishes; it was a simple dish but delivered good flavor and texture. Chicken wings were crispy and moist, very similar to Korean fried chicken. That being said, it wasn't super unique. The nasi goreng was sweeter than I expected, and it felt similar to fried rice you can find at a Chinese restaurant (in terms of flavor profile). We also got the chicken sausage with the nasi goreng; the cumin on the sausage was a bit too overpowering for me. My favorite dish was the mie tek tek - because of the strong wok hei, there was a great smoky and charred flavor. The kwetiang goreng used wide rice noodle; the flavor was good and similar to a drunken noodle. Overall, I really enjoyed the food and would definitely come here again. Although the waitstaff was friendly and courteous, it did seem that they were somewhat understaffed. In terms of value, I'd say 3.5/5 because the portions could be larger (but they weren't tiny). The parking is limited in the lot, so you'll have to find street parking. read more

Placed a take-out order for: - Ayam Penyet (chicken breast/wing on bone) w/ garlic sauce and eggplant (loved this dish, sauce has HEAT so we got on the side) - Bihun Goreng - (Thin Rice noodles) - Not our favorite. Cute interior! It has more of a cafe-vibe than restaurant, which was pleasantly unexpected. Not a lot of space for big groups though. All the workers were very nice and prompt with their service. My friends and I shared the following: Roti Paratha (3/5) - the roti was good, but the curry dip was way too salty; serving was enough to share between 3 people Mie Tek Tek (2.5/5) - too salty and it feels like they added too much soy sauce to this. We had this in mild spicy, so perhaps I'll like it better if it's more spicy? My friends thought that the spice level was good enough for this but they agreed that it was still too salty + sweet. Nasi Goreng Jawa (4/5) - I liked this one the most out of the 3 items we got; the flavoring was just right. I thought that I wouldn't like rice and noodle mixed together, but the combo of mie + nasi goreng is not bad at all since the egg noodle is the thin kind. Personally thought that this wasn't spicy (unless I ate the thai chili), but my friend confirmed that my taste bud is broken - the noodle itself has spice too. We Went there last night with our chilean friend that we were introducing to Indo food but was very disappointed. This is a place we go to on regular bases. Like 2 a month basically. Took lots of friends there jn the past and everyone loved it. Last night, we were surprised that the best thing in their menu that we always order wasnt there anymore. Talked to the waiter and asked them abt that menu changes and he said they changed it about 2 wks ago. We were introduced to food that basically isnt jst indonesian. They have pad thai now and other stuff. It felt like its not as authentic indonesian food like it used to be. They expanded the place abt a year ago but we didnt like the fact that they also took the best part off their menu. The festival rice is gone so as the crocket. That was our main thing whenever we go there. So whoever decided to change the menu and make it more like an "over all asian cuisine instead of just indonesian" made a wrong mistake. What he could have done is add more to the menu and kept the old ones. Why would u take something really good in ur menu! And why would u add some thai food when u can find thai food in every corner literally??!!! That's the crazy thing!! Anyways, definitely not going to recommend this place anymore. Simpang was a choice on a whim - we were on our way to Venice Beach and were hungry, a quick search of the area showed me Simpang and I chose it for its uniqueness. I have had excellent authentic Indonesian food, so my expectations were super high. Simpang Asia surpassed them ALL!!! We ordered the chicken sate and Roti Paratha as appetizers. It was lovely to find out that the chicken sate sauce was not made of peanut butter and cloyingly sweet. It was made of crushed peanuts, full of umami richness and was absolutely delicious! The roti Paratha was soft and buttery, with the curry having a rich chicken flavor, and pleasantly salty (absolutely not overwhelming) making you want to dip over and over again. Both were finished way before we were seated because the appetizers were delicious. Now my expectations were even more heightened. Simpang Asia definitely came through on them all! We also ordered the Nasi Lemak and the Shrimp Nasi Goreng as entrees and the Nasi Goreng was quite possibly the absolute BEST fried rice I've ever had! The Nasi Lemak seemed simple to look at. But one bite of that chicken coated in that luscious curry sauce mixed with the fried crispy anchovies and peanuts and the sambal all mixed together are an EXPLOSION of flavors and textures in the mouth. Absolutely delicious! Beautiful ambience, the hospitality is unmatched. Fresh coconut to accompany the fiery spices and the deep flavors, the only thing I was upset about is that I just did not have enough space for dessert. This was our second visit to this location, although we've been to the National Blvd. location many times. This place is much more of a restaurant experience because the other is rather rustic outdoor seating only. Here, it is a lovely space, with attractive tables and painted walls. We also prefer the menu here, and they serve beer and wine. The food is really delicious and very authentic. We particularly enjoy the papaya salad, the lumpia, and the mie tek tek. Probably my favorite part of LA is being able to find good food from anywhere at reasonable prices. This cute little southeast Asian place totally fits the bill in that way. An extensive menu with good vegetarian options. We had a noodle dish, some roti, and a mushroom gravy type deal. All were delicious, but the mushroom stands out to me as I write this review a few weeks later. Creamy and flavorful and very good. The place is small but nice inside. It feels a bit unfinished but in a cute, trendy way. That said, I was pleasantly surprised by the price points. I suggest try is restaurant every time my partner asks if I want take out. The food is so delicious and the value for money is also good. We love the Roti appetizer and our favorite dish is the vegetarian Rames!!!! The staff are always lovely and sweet and they remember us which is always nice for a neighborhood gem. The Venice location is really nice inside and much newer than the one in Culver City, and I have no complaints with the service. What I recommend: - Nasi Bungkus: This is a meal wrapped in bamboo. It's so comforting, meaty, saucy, but not heavy. There's also a ton of really soft-cooked veggies which soaked up the sauce really well. - Festival Rice (Nasi Kuning): Really good as well! You get to try out so many different flavors. It's a great dish to get if you're not really sharing with others and are indecisive on the menu options. - Roti Paratha: Please do get this! With all that said I would like to take the time to give you a warning about the spiciness of the Nasi Goreng Jagger. It's a tasty dish but very very spicy. How spicy is it exactly, we'll it might be a 9.5-11 at a Thai place. You might start wondering if what you're eating is a meal or if you're practicing an exercise of atonement through suffering for the sins of man. I'm leaning towards the latter. I felt clear headed and felt a real sense of calmness a few minutes after eating it. So in summary, it's so spicy it temporarily gave me a sense of inner peace. You have been warned. read more

I hold restaurants to a Manhattan quality after living there for years and this place would be successful in New York or any major city. I ordered the laksa which was pretty large with some good pieces of seafood but it needed a little more salt. My cousin ordered the grilled fish which was really good. The grilled spinach was really tasty and fresh. The gado Gado salad was a salad my cousin thought tasted weird. To me it was a warm stir fry they called a salad. I enjoyed it. Simpang Asia is located on Lincoln Bl in Venice. It offers southeast Asian and Asian fusion food and is a small new business to the area, which I wanted to support during these covid challenged times. This is a branch of the original Simpang Asia located on National Bl in the Palms WLA area, which I never had a chance to visit. This restaurant is in a small strip mall, with limited parking. Last week I happened to be in this area and decided to try. There were a handful or posted reviews on yelp. Their website encourage you to download their app to place orders for pick up and takeout ONLY is allowed, and that's what I did. The menu offered a melange of asian fusion foods including influences of; chinese, indian malaysian and singaporean but I was particularly interested in more unique flavors from Singapore, which is their specialty, so I ordered the Coconut Beef stew, the Grilled whole fish, Laksa seafood curry noodle soup, coconut rice, braised green beans and veggie spring rolls. There was no option to instruct the cook to prepare my food spicy, and my guess is that any spicy condiment would be mild. Pick up order was contactless and easy. The staff greeted me from a distance and thank me. I purchased a handful of fresh serrano chili peppers and tomatoes from my local Beverly Hills market, sliced the peppers and added it to these dishes. The coconut beef stew with potatoes was rich, delicious and my added chili peppers with the coconut rice made it taste phenomenal. The grilled whole tilapia fish was good after I added their thick sweet soy glaze. Not a fan of tilapia, these were farmed and it had that taste. Usually prefer wild salmon which has a better taste. The Laksa seafood and veggie curry soup was also delicious and deep with flavor.The veggie spring rolls were crunchy and the filling was tasty. All the dishes tasted fresh and just so very good and almost as good as the same dishes I had during my adventurous trip to Singapore years ago. My review is for the food only, I didn't dine inside and cannot comment on service and ambiance, which is probably good, as I would prefer dining in an area and surroundings I feel more comfortable in, my place in 90210. We did a takeout order and it was ready within 15 minutes of ordering which was great. The food was still hot when we got home and was very obviously fresh.
