First off, I didn't know of this restaurant. While attending a screening at the Hammer Museum, a friend suggested this place during the dinner break. I didn't know that there was such a tasty restaurant so close to the UCLA screenings. We ordered so many variations on dumplings and each one was terrific. Shrimp wontons with chili oil. I was in LA visiting some friends about two weeks ago. We were craving dim sum and this spot was nearby! We got a variety of dim sum and shared, but my personal favorites were the XLB and the spicy chili oil wontons. However, our dining experience was just not great. We ordered our food and while we were waiting, a lady who I'm assuming was the owner/manager had some of the employees moving the umbrellas around. I don't know why they didn't wait until there were no customers, but they almost hit us multiple times and it kinda ruined our meal even though we were really excited to eat!! Even the girl bringing the food had to duck while she was serving us. The lady was rudely directing the employees for the entire time we were eating, and it was incredibly off putting and distracting overall. Funnily enough, on our way back, we walked past the restaurant a bit later and she was still there yelling at employees so I can't imagine how many more customers had their meals ruined! I actually really like this because you can see pictures of the food and take your time ordering. Since it was our first time here we took a long time to decide what we wanted. Actually so bomblicious. I have heard such great things about this dim sum place and was not disappointed. My friend and I ordered the pork and shrimp siu mai, shrimp wonton, char siu steamed baos, and the pork soup noodles. Was a little pricey, but I would say pretty standard for a dim sum place. If I could give this place more than 5 stars, I would My husband and I ate here after a walk around Westwood. We were hesitant at first because we were planning to have dinner elsewhere, but am so glad we decided to eat at ixlb instead! When you enter, there are about 4-5 kiosks to place your order. We went through the menu and decided on the wonton shrimp dumpling (fried), pan fried chicken dumpling, xiao long bao, street noodle special and sesame balls. Since we ordered for dine in, our order was brought out to us with complimentary water, chopsticks and soy sauce packets. And BOY were we more than satisfied! For me, the STAR of the show was the wonton shrimp dumplings, which were perfectly deep fried, bursting with quality shrimp, and dressed in the perfect dollop of chili oil. If you're a shrimp lover and in the mood for a slightly spicy and crispy dumpling, I would definitely recommend ordering this! My next favorite was the chicken dumplings which were juicy, flavorful and probably the heartiest chicken dumplings I have ever had - 10/10. And to round out my order, sesame balls for dessert! They we're HUGE and came out warm! And to my surprise, variety sesame balls with red bean and mooncake filings, which I thought was really cool since I don't get mixed sesame balls often. My husband ordered the noodles and xlb. I wasn't a fan of the xlb but the noodles were okay. I ordered the Taiwanese cabbage, the vegetarian baos, and the steamed seafood pearls, and omg the food is so fresh. The steamed seafood pearls are the best: juicy and bouncy. The taste is beyond. The cabbage and the baos need a little dressing up with the sauce, but overall super fresh and healthy. I ordered to go and Jenny at the front was really nice in explaining the menu to me. Will definitely come back to try the fried dumplings and different baos. A++ recommend. One note: they do use a lot of plastic. I'm aware that a lot of the food is steamed and comes out super hot. I enjoy coming here and it is always a vibe. It is so difficult to be selective when you are hungry, so I ordered a large selection to make sure that I would take home different choices. I ended up getting the Xiao Long Bao, Cha Siu Bao, Chicken Siu Mai, and a side of rice. The Xiao Long Bao consisted of 5 pieces of juicy pork dumplings where each had ground pork, ginger, garlic, scallion, and cabbage. There were 3 pieces for the Cha Siu Bao, which was a chopped BBQ honey roast pork bao. I also got the usual Chicken Siu Mai, which had 4 pieces filled with chicken ginger, and sweet corn covered by an egg wrap. Finally, dim sum in Westwood is not a fantasy. At the same time, I want to keep your expectation in check. It's a traditional dim sum experience, with freshly prepared dishes on carts that offer instant gratification for the diners. At Ixlb, you order the dishes ahead, most likely from a kiosk, and wait 10-15 minutes for them to be delivered in togo containers at an outdoor dining area. I get it, this workflow streamlines the process of food delivery and payment, and it cuts down staff time and ordering errors. Nevertheless, being responsible for so many plastic containers does make me feel guilty. The foods themselves are good. They weren't the best, but I wasn't expecting getting the best dim sum in Westwood either. Each dish tasted authentic and traditional. The shrimp chive dumplings were flavorful and fresh, and the daikon cakes were crispy and fragrant. They came with small packs of soy sauce and chili oil, but I wish the house special sauce would be supplied without extra cost. I brought my dog with me and we sat in the corner. My favorites were the pan fried turnip, sticky rice ball, and french cha siu bao. I think I accidentally read the cucumber dish as "spicy cucumber" instead of "pickled cucumber." I'm not a huge fan of pickled foods, but it was a good balance of both spicy and pickled. The veggie bao was good but just not my preferred type of bao between that and the cha siu bao.
